Looking for Recommendations for Lion Server + Workstations

I am looking to move my small business from a pc based system to a Mac Mini w/Lion Server plus a mix of new iMacs and 2 pc's running Windows 7.  Does anyone have experience with the successful implementation?  Would you do it again? or is the mixture more of a problem than going all Mac products?
The new server would be the hub and the mix of iMacs and pc's would be used as workstations.  Email administration is a big question.  We need to be able to migrate our '@companyname' to the server and not use Groupwise any more.  We also need to be able to push to a mix of iPhone and Android phones.
Any success stories and reassurance that this is the right direction to lead the business would be appreciated.
Thanks...T

I can recommend Macminicolo as a good choice for a co-located Mac mini server. Good people, good service.

  • Is there a manual for Lion Server?

Where can I find detailed documentation for Lion Server?

Piggy-backing but the lack of official documentation amazes me and can be seen as a sign of immature product roll-out.  My similar question is below, but unless something has changed I will be looking at 3d party books (yes, in paper).
What is the best overall documentation and guide for using OS X Lion Server?  I am using a Mac Mini (2.3/8GB/500GB) and learning the server in preparation for a small office server.  I am just using it at home now but going to try multiple user config for iCal, document sharing, remote access, VPN server, print server, mail server, and back-up.  I am suprised not only by the presence of so much adverse comment but even more by the apparent lack of solid and readily available documentation from apple--maybe it is there and I have just missed it.  I downloaded from apple.com the .pdf

    Upgrading and
    Migrating
For Mac OS X v10.7 Lion Server.
Not much there for getting started from scratch.  I viewed www.apple.com/macosx/server/  which is more marketing than help.  I also went to https://discussions.apple.com/community/servers_enterprise_software/mac_os_x_lio n_server and ended up back here.  Is there a good old fashioned paper book that I can sit in the sun with a cup of tea and start to both skim and study?

  • System keeps looking for a 'server' that does not exist. Is says the old name of my Airport Extreme. Clicking it away (4x) it gets through.

System keeps looking for a 'server' that does not exist. Is says the old name of my Airport Extreme. Clicking it away (4x) finally  gets through.

Other weirdness to report: my neighbor upstairs appears to have a Linksys router network on channel 6. My AEBS is on channel 1 so there shouldn't be interference... but according to iStumbler sometimes the signal leaps to 64000 (keep in mind my own Airport never tops 60)! Is that potentially the problem?
Might it be possible that your neighbor just acquired a 802.11n (pre-N) wireless router recently?
802.11n effectively increases capacity by doubling the number of Wi-Fi radios and increasing the number of antennas used to push signals out of those radios. 802.11n splits a data frame into multiple pieces. It then transmits these pieces in parallel using multiple radios that are attached to multiple antennas. These antennas blast out signals from virtually the same vantage point – scattering the signals everywhere.
You may find the following ZDNet article interesting: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=247
Even if he did not, and you are on good terms, you might want to ask if he can temporarily turn off his wireless, or, at least, reduce the signal strength to see if that will help in your situation.

  • Server crashed. How do I reset iPads so they stop looking for the server?

I was using the OSX Server app on an old Mac Mini when it crashed. A cart of iPads had been set up to use Profile Manager with the Device Enrollment Program part of Apple Mobile Deployment. I have deleted the server from the Device Enrollment Program, but my iPads are stuck in set up looking for the server. I am willing to put them back in Configurator at this point, but Configurator will not recognize them. Help!

Yes, MaxAuthTries is involved here as a limit, but -vvv should tell you more of what's going on...
Warning: Permanently added '[FQDN]:2336' (RSA) to the list of known hosts.
is normal for a new ssh connection.
Too many authentication failures for USER
usually means the password is wrong, or the ssh certificate is not accepted or not acceptable.   Or that you might possibly have tried a large number of different logins, and bumped into MaxAuthTries.
Try an ssh from the client into the target box with the -vvv switch (and the proper target port, if you're not using 22 here), and see if you can duplicate the error.  The -vvv turns on gonzo logging.  Depending on what's going on, you might also have to turn on logging in sshd.  That's usually a configuration file option within the context of the daemon.
For grins, I'd also check DNS services on both the client and the server; use sudo changeip -checkhostname on the server, and dig +short www.example.com (substitute the FQDN of the server) on the client.

  • Offline installer for Lion Server? Can it be done?

    Hi guys,
    /rant
Before I get to the topic of this post let me state, the claimed download size for Lion Server is WAAAAAY off the +14MB they say it is. I have reinstalled it few times now and this time around I monitored the download and it came in at the +200MB mark!!! Sure, maybe the initial installer is only 14MB but it pulls down another +200MB when setting it up. Why is this not mentioned on the App Store page? Surely we should be told about such a large additional download.
    /end rant
Can anyone tell me if its possible to make an offline installer for Lion Server, in the same way that it can be done for the Lion client?
I have been tinkering with it a lot and have had to reinstall a few times and would prefer to not have to download 200MB everytime I screw something up, if it can be avoided.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi defecta,
i have the same problem. I had to install a new server with lion at the cusomers site in a heavy military bunker below earth and no internet around. I was allowed to bring the server up to surface and give it internet with a myfi. As you can imagine it took some hours to download on a bad mobile connection out in the woods. I do know i have to install that server from scratch after it has been tested.
Have you or anyone else been able to capture the download? Is there a place to get an offline install package, a DVD or Stick. Sadly its to late now to image that server after fresh install.

  • Since lion upgrade iMac keeps looking for old server

    Hi,
I have a NAS prior to Lion upgrade which was working perfectly. Now with the Lion upgrade the NAS (Sitecom) ther were some issues. I have reinstalled the NAs and had given it a new name. I can find the NAs now so thats not a problem.
But almost every hour I get 2 warning that he can not find the "old NAS", it really start annoying me and I've looked everywhere and I don't even find any link (Finder) towards it so I don't know what to do to get rid of this message, receiving it every hour twice really start getting on my nerves.
    Sorry for th Dutch, but the message translates;
A problem has occured with connecting to the server 'VanBeeckNAS'
The server doesn't exist or is currently not available. Check the servername or the IP-address of the server, ...
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Peter

Same problem since lion. Not only can I not back up to the server it keeps looking for it several times on start up. Real annoying.

  • Looking for Lion compatible All-in-One printer

Looking for MacBook Pro Lion compatible All-in-One color printer for my Mom who is 77 and on a limited income when it comes to purchasing ink. Preferred options include wi-fi, auto duplex, memory card slots, easy to operate. I was leaning toward a Kodak printer but majority of reviews indicate when any one of the ink cartridges is empty no more print jobs will process until the empty cartridge is replaced. In addition, folks indicate even though ink is less expensive, replacemnet is more frequent indicating that perhaps the cartridge capacity is smaller in size. Both are deal breakers. Canon PIXMA MX892 Wireless and the HP Envy series both appear impressive but I am confused regarding compatibility with Lion. Appreciate experienced recommendations, Thanks

    ChrisPbass,
I would suggest contacting HP Home & Home Office. They will be able to narrow down the field to what would be best for your particular use. There number is below.

  • Can I create a bootable usb for Lion SERVER?

I've installed Lion OS. Then downloaded Lion SERVER.
Creating a bootable USB for the ordinary OS was simple enough (stop install, show contents, restore partition etc). However, with Lion Server, install package does not appear in applications and there does not seem to be any obvious was way to stop the installation before the install package self destructs. Download from app store shows in Launchpad. Icon then changes to 'installing'. Install process is very quick and it won't stop
Has anyone else had this "problem"? Thanks!

If you have a Mac mini Server with Lion server pre-installed you can do this fairly easily using the method outlined here http://www.hotblack.co.nz/article.lsd?i=lionserver
But I have a stock iMac with Lion pre-installed and got the Lion Server on top. I too have been looking at this "problem". Even after you've installed Lion Server and try the method they suggest you do not get a Lion Server InstallESD.dmg file.
    My solution is this:
Using your existing Lion Server, copy "Install Mac OS X Lion" to your applications folder. Then when you use the installer with a BLANK volume as your target you will see an Options button on the bottom left side of the Installer pane. Clicking this allows you to install Server components. Your target can be a 16GB USB stick. Interestingly when this stick reboots you actually get the Server Assistant up which can configure your server.
So essentially you have a Lion Server USB stick - again don't forget to add "Install Mac OS X Lion" to the Applications folder.
You can also snag the Server components for copying onto target volumes by shutting down before the install reboot.

  • Revoking push certificate for lion server does not work

After reinstalling my Lion Server - based on a Mac Mini Server - I generated also a new Push Certificate since I changed a lot of names/config. Now I found that an older Push Certificate is shown as active althoug I allready revoked it. When I hit the Revoke Button besides that Certificate (that is shown as valid and active until 9-12) I get an error - allready revoked!? Does this harm my configuration and can I do anything to solve this problem?
    Thanks for any help/suggestions.
    Best,
    Torsten

The truth is, I shouldn't have posted this. Sorry. Late. Frustrated. I really just want it to work. I got Lion in hopes of learning how it worked. Now that I know it doesn't, I know not to recommend to my clients.
Apple should give up trying to "make believe" you can manage an Enterprise Network Server using a GUI. They have successfully proven it over and over. Lion is their coup d' gras of "Don't try this at home".
Now, I will search the forum for the answer, sure to discover that after a long, long, session in Terminal, using cryptic unix commands, I'll solve my problem.
That's all. It will be doubly frustrating, as I'll have to turn off the Server so I can even see the internet, to find answers, create pdf's of web pages, turn the server back on, and try to fix.
It is simply unacceptable. That's all.

  • Best Setup for Lion Server Time Machine Backup with Drobo?

I've been thinking about this a lot, yet I don't feel I have a good solution for this, so I'm going to throw it out to the community.
I have a home server setup using a Mac Mini running Lion Server 10.7.2 with a Firewire 800 Drobo attached.  The Drobo is used for both Time Machine backups and files.  I also have a Powerbook G4 running Leopard and a MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with Lion 10.7.2 which connect to the Server and the Drobo wirelessly thorugh an Airport Extreme.
I want to use Time Machine to have all of my computers back up to the server & Drobo, but realize there are several ways to go, each with their pluses and minuses:
    Server Time Machine Backup:
+ Centralizes backup process, rules, and other elements
+ Currently Mac Mini is backing up to the Drobo correctly using this process
+ Have setup size limit on Server backup so that it does not eat up file space
    - Would combine laptop backups with server backup into one sparse image: this would lead to the computer with the largest backup needs taking up too much space
    Client-Driven Time Machine Backup:
+ Allows for customization of backup processes by computer
+ Can setup specific space requirements for each computer
+ Backups are separate from each other
    - Wireless backup from laptops to Drobo is not functioning currently
Any thoughts or experiences on how best to set this up?  I tend to do most of my work on the MacBook, hence I am concerned about it having it's backup space eaten up by the server, but that may be more of a theoretical issue than a real one.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Well I'm not sure if I am following you but I will explain how I set mine up. When I got the Drobo I inserted 2 drives and selected the highest available volume I could (16TB). My drives are 4 TB each and I knew I would soon add 2 more. Then Drobo did its thing and prepared these drives. The Drobo shows up on my mini desktop as an external drive. When I log into my server from my other computer I can see the mini server volume and the Drobo volume. I can access each no problem. They act as regular volumes. Soon after I added the second two drives and everything stayed the same meaning I could still see and access the Drobo on the desktop of my mini. So it sounds like you used the Drobo dashboard to partition yours for two volumes? Are they both showing on the desktop?
"Maybe the Drobo needs to be mounted on the desktop to be considered AFP feature enabled." I could be wrong and hopefully someone will correct me but I think the Drobo (or volumes) have to be mounted on the desktop to work with AFP.

  • IDVD is looking for a server that no longer exists...

When I try to start iDVD it goes out to look for media on a shared drive that no longer exists... How can I make iDVD forget about that drive?

    Hi
I would start with - trashing the iDVD Preference file
    iDVD pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named. com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.

  • Looking for Print Server for HP Photosmart C4483 All-in-One Printer

I am looking for Print Servers that I can use with 'HP Photosmart C4483 All-in-One Printer' for both 'Printing and Scanning'. I'm not sure if this Printer is Network Ready or Network Capable, kindly advice.

    Hello Merole
As I understand it you can print color everywhere but from MS Word 2013? If this is the case try the steps I have outlined below to see if they resolve your issue:
On the View tab, in the Color/Grayscale group, click Black and White.
On the Black and White tab, in the Change Selected Object group, click the settings that you want.
I hope this helps resolve your printing issue. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!
