Looking for silent HDD for Macbook Pro 208 Penryn

Hi,
i'm looking for a really silent HDD for my MB Pro. The HDD in my stock base MB Pro is a FUJITSU MHY2200BH. It makes a permanent "fan-like" background noise. Can someone recommend a silent 200-250GB HDD? (doesn't matter whether 5400rpm or 7200rpm).

These models are to be considered (Samsung, Western Digital and Toshiba)

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.

Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

  • What is the largest hard drive I can upgrade to for MacBook Pro A1278 Early '11

What is the largest hard drive I can upgrade to for macbook pro A1278 Early 2011?  I have seen 750GB on some websites, but I would like a 1TB  I am looking for SATA 6.0GB, 1TB 7200.  Is this dependant on the physical size of the hard drive? I have seen a height of 15mm and 9.5 mm.  How do I know what will fit??

I have not seen any 7200 rpm 1 TB HDDs.  They all are 5400 rpm.  I would say that this HDD comes closest to your requirements.  Tomorrow, there may be others.

  • What are the parallels memory requirements for MacBook Pro?

I am looking to buy a new MacBook Pro - either 13 or 15 inch model.  I will be running Parallels with Win 8 and MS Office Pro.  The 13 inch MBP only comes with 8 GB - the 15 inch with 16 GB, but it is expensive.
Can I get by with 8GB and an i7 processor on the 13 Retina?

Currently Windows in Parallels works fine with 8GB, but now that the RAM limit gloves are off with 64bit processors and operating systems Apple and others are bloating their operating systems and associated programs (like web browsers etc) as to keep the likes of Google's Chrome browser from being turned into a platform.
So in simple terms the 16GB and the better performance of the 15" is going to save you money in the long run as you will have to buy a newer machine less often, also it has a dedicated graphics processor so 3D games and other more intensive graphics can be used. Even for normal use the 15" runs cooler than the 13" as the two heat sources are separate on the logicboard.
The 15" also has a larger screen, so it's easier to use, also it will run more than one operating system a lot better than the 13" will.
Also the 15" will be able to handle more OS X upgrades than the 13" as Apple releases a new one every year or two.

    toshiba 1.tb and 7200 RPM ?
Those are same as use by Apple in the non-retina macbook Pro, Ive got piles of them, only a Hitachi is better.
Toshiba HD are a hair noisy even by Toshiba own admission, but no big deal.
I would NEVER buy from OWC merely for the reasons that their prices are miserable.
    Here you go,   $65

  • Should i go for macbook pro 13" or air 13"

hey guys, now that i've been new macbook pro has come out light, thinner and with extra 4GB RAM, i just do not know if i should get macbook air or pro.
I am a college student where power ports are readily available in my campus. so battery life of 7~8 hours and up are totally fine.
    Pros for macbook pro are:
    BEAUTIFUL screen
better CPU & GPU (even though there may only be slight difference)
    Good palm rest
    Pros for macbook air are:
    LIGHT AND THIN
    EXTREMELY GOOD battery life
I have seen many reviews where they said difference in size and weight is  negligible for a person with healthy body (lol) but also CPU and GPU difference are also negligible since it doesn't differ very much in terms of performance.
I do not know if those are true, but regardless, i wanted to get some advices from people who owns pro, air or even both.
    Thanks in advance guys !
ps. i heard apple might come up with RETINA displace macbook air in late 2014 or early 2015. is it trust able?

Yes, you should be able to dual boot Windows 7 and above using a built-in utility called 'Bootcamp'. I personally has boot camped Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Installing Windows only took about 10 minutes (lightning fast) and all the drivers installed correctly. Windows has never looked better =D
However, I will report one issue. In OS X Mavericks, you can use multi-touch gestures to interact with the system, for example two-finger scrolling, or pinch-to-zoom. In Windows, these multitouch gestures do not work on the trackpad at all. For me it was frustrating, and I ended up deleting Windows simply because of the fact that multi-touch is not supported by Windows. However, basic trackpad functions work, for example tracking, right-clicking, and dragging windows.
All other drivers are fully functional. If you need any assistance with Bootcamp, visit the Apple Support website, or just post in this same forum and I will be glad to help you.

  • What's the maximum memory ram for Macbook Pro?

    Hello,
May I know what's the maximum memory ram capacity for Macbook Pro?
I am having Macbook Pro - 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Thank you!
    Alvin

Hate to resurrect a dead horse but....I was looking in the instructions for memory upgrades and the instructions specified that the computer will only recognize 3 gigs. Will that still be in effect if I upgrade to Snow Leopard when it becomes available? Or do I need to save my pennies for a Mac Pro? What I am getting at is: is the reason for the RAM cap due to software issues, 64 bit not being native, different version of leopard used on notebooks, or is it due to hardware issues.

  • ZeroShock sleeve case for MacBook Pro is available...

In case anyone is looking for one, the ZeroShock sleeve case fitted for MacBook Pro is available at:
    http://shinza.com/productinfo.php?productsid=57
Although the manufacturer is Japanese, the product is apparently in inventory and shipped from their California warehouse.
I have ordered, but not yet received.
    Enjoy.

Ya the Biolithic is perfect for that application. I got one while my MBP was in for repairs so it's never been used. It comes with a screen protector, laptop bag, and peripherals bag. I can do $35 ($7 cheaper than if you bought from Biolithic) shipped, let me know if you're interested.
    Thanks,

  • SSD for Macbook Pro 2012

What is the most compatible SSD 256 GB for Macbook Pro Mid-2012 originally installed with a 750-5600rpm hdd?

That is just nonsense. PC Centric vendors carry the same SSDs that work in all computers, Mac-Win PC-Linux PC.
No new drive made to be put inside a computer come specifically for Mac or Windows or Linux for that matter. They are RAW drives and need to be partitioned and formatted for the type of computer they are being install into and the OS that hardware will be running.
So to the OP buy whatever floats your boat from any computer parts reseller you choose to deal with. Without worry if it will work in your Mac computer, it will. Some are better than other, some are faster than others and some are much mopre expensive that other for no good reason.
As to Firmware updates Mr Galt has it right that some SSD manufacturers don't have Mac OS X specific update software. But that is not a problem if you own a PC or know someone that does own a PC. The firmware can be updated using a PC and then put back in your Mac. If you buy a model that has been on the market for a period of time the Firmware is more then likely already at it most current level.
    John Galt wrote:
Purchase one from OWC / MacSales. Avoid PC-centric vendors.
Many SSDs will require firmware for Mavericks compatibility and not all vendors offer an installer that will work on a Mac.

If you want a standard word or word processing, I like the "look" of Pages but the reason I first bought my first Mac (1989) still use Word, though its support on Mac may not be up to its PC cousin.
