Looking for software

I wasn't really sure which forum to put this in, so if this is the wrong place... my apologies in advance.
This is a bit of a "general purpose" inquiry regarding a specific piece of software that may or may not exist.
I'm looking for a piece of "specialty" software for writing/composing drum notation that will run on OS X -- However, I'm not even sure that such software exists.
I have used various applications in the past (ie: CakeWalk, Finale Notepad, etc.). All of these support traditional notation for most instrumentation, but none of these support traditional drum score notation (or drum tab).
I'm looking for an OS X application that would allow for composing sheet music for individual percussion instruments (i.e. Concert Snare, Congas/Bongos, etc.) as well as drum kit.
Furthermore, I'm looking for software that properly notates (displays) rolls (i.e. 5-stroke, 7-stroke, 11-stroke, etc.) and other rudiment notation (i.e. stick bounces (Flams/Ruff), Accent Marks, Cymbal Chokes, Open Palm/Cupped Palm for hand drumming, etc.).
And of course, it should also support traditional notation markup for other musical elements such as "staccato", "forte", "allegro", etc.
Support for MIDI would also be a bonus.
If ANYONE knows of such sophisticated drumming software, please... let me know... thanks.

I don't know that it supports it, but GVox Encore is very popular for notation.

  • Looking for software or a service with which I can create a personalized photo calendar

I am looking for software or a service with which I can create a personalized photo calendar. Any recommendations?
    Jerry

    Thanks for the reply.
iPhoto, unfortunately, has some real problems in my opinion. Control over image placement and size is limited. This is compounded by the fact that Apple has not made the job any easier by refusing to publish information such as recommended aspect ratios and pixel sizes of images used to create a calendar. Obviously, these both change as the page layouts change. But, I don't think it is too much to ask that Apple supply image aspect ratios for each frame size, 2:3, 3:4, 1:1, or something else. What pixel sizes are required for each frame size/aspect? It is impossible to place 2 photos (or 1 photo and a name) on one date should 2 birthdays fall on one day.
Further, there is no recommendation for color space to be used by the printer.
I am tired of trying out a photo in the calendar only to find it looks bad at the pixel size and aspect I chose, then have to go back to the original, re-crop, resize, and wrestle with bringing it back to iPhoto. (I use Aperture to organize my images.)
I must also add that I had a very bad experience with an iPhoto book earlier this year. Don't know if Apple has fixed the problems as I refuse to invest another 20 hours of time and more then $150.00 to find out.
I am seriously looking for something to replace iPhoto (unless changes are made) to do the 10 or 15 calendars for my family again this year (and possibly redo my book).

  • Satellite A100: looking for software to control the fan speed

    Hi,
I'm looking for software to control/read out the fan speed of my laptop, because Power Saver does not seem to do anything. It does not seem to matter if i set the 'Cooling Method' to 'Battery Optimized' or 'Maximum Performance', or even the fixed CPU processing speed. I've (de)installed the Common Module & Power Saver a couple of times to no avail.
Also SpeedFan & NHC do not work.

    Hi
Sorry but I do not agree with your opinion about Power saver utility. Do you really believe that Toshiba create tool like this for nothing? Just for info: power saver utility is not available with Vista OS and on this forum you can find topics where people really missing this nice and useful utility.
Anyway it is well known that many tools you can find on the internet have no much influence on notebook cooling fan speed. To be honest, something like that can be very dangerous because most users want to have silent notebooks and overheating issues are totally underestimated.
Can you please be a little bit more specific about your problem? Is your notebook too loud for you or is battery running time to short? Why you are not satisfied with this tool?

  • I don't use Photoshop - looking for software with similar functionality to Photoshop's Pixelbender / Oil Painting.  Any suggestions?

I don't use Photoshop, I'm an Aperture guy.
I'm looking for software with similar functionality to Photoshop's Pixelbender / Oil Painting.
I'm especially interested in the bending of the pixels, along the lines of impressionist paintings - think van Gogh.
    Any suggestions?

If you are interested in computer simulated drawing and painting effects, have a look at the "ToonIt!" plug-in for Aperture. This will do some of the basic work for you, but you will have to do quite a lot of editing afterwards, to turn the image into a piece of art.
It might be easier, to do most of the drwing and painting yourself in the first place - ArtRage Deluxe is very versatile, if you have a large trackpad and pen.
For example: Applying a light ToonIt! effect "Impressionist2": The diagonal
cross-pattern is due to "Demo" mode - I have not yet bought the plug-in - it is rather expensive:

I am looking for software to store photos with.  I am not a fancy photographer, and really am just looking for the digital version of a photo album. iPhoto is not cutting it, mainly because it does not back up and restore easily on an external HD.

That's how Time Machine and iPhoto now work.  Restore the library to one of the external HDs, check it for the photos you want, export them to the boot drive and delete the restored library.
If you know the file name of the photo you're looking for you can search for them in the TM backup using Find Any File.
My workflow allows me to do that:
1 - upload new photos to a folder on the Desktop.
2 - name the folder to represent the contents and date: 01/03/10-Toads Bday
3 - use a file renaming app to sequentially rename the photos in the folder to: 2010-01-03-Toads Bday-001.JPG,  -002,JPG, -003.JPG,  etc.
4 - import the folder into iPhoto creating an Event with the same title as the folder.
Now I can search for those file by file name with any app of my choosing.

  • Looking for software that allows CMS integration with InDesign.

Looking for catalog production people who have already found a solution to this problem.
We have a content management system that serves as our data warehouse for our catalog and product information. This data includes information from Marketing, Accounting, and Engineering and is used with our on line catalog and data extracts for customers. Our goal is to extend the use of this system to include an interface to the printed catalog process.
Immediate goal would be to provide keyed access by product key into InDesign for pricing and technical specifications. Design staff needs to have keyed access to additional catalog information used in the catalog sections, headings, and product descriptions including bullets and paragraph information.
We are looking for software that can act as a "bridge" between InDesign and our CMS. We need a software company that can provide training and support for the InDesign users and documentation allowing IT to support new processes including the possible use of apple scripting and automator scripts.
Our IT staff has the database skills to manage and change the CMS database as needed by this project including custom tables and views. Our CMS is available using a MySql server running on Lunix. This is a dynamic copy of our primary CMS from a DB2/400 server.
We have looked at a variety of software packages, but I have found you learn so much more when you actually USE the software. I would like to avoid any more expensive dead ends.
    Thanks for any input.

  • I'm looking for software for my iMac to use to copy old VHS movies onto DVD and old records (digital turn table) in CDs.  Recommendations please?

I'm looking for software for my iMAC to use to copy old VHS movies from a VCR into DVDs and records from my digital turn table into CDs.  Any recommendations?

For the VHS movies, try googling Elgato - they make a number of USB devices that are supposed to be able to do this, but check what formatting options they offer : you will want a device that converts directly into .MOV files (to play in QuickTime), or into H.264 for iTunes / iPods, etc.
As for the vinyl records - first you need a device that will convert the analogue output (phono) into a digital form and will connect via FireWire or USB. The Griffin iMic is one such USB device (if still available?). From there you can use the free Audacity download to read in the signal and convert to a suitable format, e.g. MP3. (You will need to use SysPrefs / Sound to switch to an external audio device, instead of your Mac's built-in mic.)
(Wait - you said "digital turntable" - software already on your Mac? How do you use a virtual turntable to play vinyl?? Unless what you really mean is an analogue turntable that has a CD writer in it, or a USB connection to connect the turntable's DAC output to a computer?? In which case, either use your turntable to burn  CDs, or connect via USB and the free Audacity software to convert the signal to music tracks and output as MP3.

  • Looking for Software - any ideas?

    Hi,
I am looking for software that will take a snapshot of a computer screen at a regular timed interval (every hour or so) and then either ftp or email the resulting screenshot. I am sure that I have come across such a program in the past, but I can't find it. Can anyone please suggest anything - thanks.

You could actually do this with 2 shell commands directly in Cronnix:
    http://abstracture.de/projects-en/cronnix
Which would be set to run every hour. The first command would take a screenshot and the second upload to a server.
The first would look like this:
    screencapture -SC ~/SomeScreenshot.png
The second line I don't know because I don't know what server you are using.

  • Looking for software that mirrors Streets and Trips

    Hi Everyone,
For years I've used Microsoft Streets & Trips to plan hiking trips and travel across the world.  I recenty made the switch to Apple and, of course, do not regret one aspect.  Except, that is, that I cannot seem to find any software packages or applications that mirror Microsoft's Streets & Trips.  Does anyone know of a program that may be similar and worth a try.  It's difficult to explain all of the capabilities of S&T so here is a link to the software for comparison.
    I truly appreciate any help!

If you're looking for some options other than Streets and Trips now that is has been discontinued, I suggest visiting http://mappoint-alternative.com/ - I found some great replacements for Streets and Trips there!

This may be a stupid suggestion... Why not just use Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. All those applications are avaliable for the Mac.
You can visit the OFFICE FOR MAC 2011 product page by clicking on the following link...
         http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products
... And if you are looking for something similar, but with a more Mac-feel, try iWork. You can find more info. by clicking on the following link...

... And if you're on a budget and can't afford to spend any money, there is great FREE productivity suite that does most of what you are looking for.
It's called OpenOffice, and you can download it for FREE, by clicking on the following link...
