Looking for still image content

I'm currently in the process of making a spec or pre-vis for a music video. It's highly conceptual, so getting the right visuals to match the lyric content is very important.
I'm off to a decent start finding things through google images, but if anyone has every used google images, it's AWFUL! A simple search like "americana" or even "american indians" constantly get horrible results. Maybe one good image out of 12 pages and there are so many non-related images it's ridiculous.
Does anyone know of other image searching sites or stock photos? Since this is the pre-vis, we dont have a budget yet, so professional stock photos are out. But in order to sell it, we need good, dramatic, related photos. Any ideas?
Thanks everyone

Hi there,
You might find iStockphoto.com a better/less expensive way to find quality images.
http://istockphoto.com/index.php?refnum=JonasEriksson
You can download free comping images, albeit slightly small and watermarked - but still quite good, especially for SD productions. Just remember to buy the images if you release commercially - they are still very cheap compared to Getty & Co.
Good luck and maybe we will see you final result somewhere - keep us posted!

iam looking for a image convertor for raw (raf) files so i can edit them in aperture can any one help please

Ah, gotchya. Your Fuji camera must not then be on this list here?  http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html  You could presumably use the sw that came with the camera and create jpegs or tiffs with them and keep them in aperture along side the unsupported raws, in stacks.

  • Poor rendering quality for still images

I have opened a new project with PAL DSLR settings (1080p, 25fps).
I have added a full res (about 4000px x 3000px) still image to the timeline and added a pan effect to it. When I view the preview in PE it looks fine. However, when I render the clip the quality is very poor in the preview.
I have tried exporting the clip to a file and this plays fine, but the preview does not look good.
Any ideas why the rendering should have this effect?

I have a few things for you to consider and tryout if interested.
    First, you are taking a 4000 x 3000 4:3 still into a 1920 x 1080 16:9 project (you say project preset = PAL/DSLR/1080p/DSLR 1080p25).
Your problem is confined to the preview of the pan and zoom result using the Pan and Zoom Tool (I am assuming the you are using Premiere Elements 10 or 11 or 12...I do not recall that you said which one).
Edit Menu/Preferences/General includes the preference "Default Scale to Frame Size" and it does just that. It is typically found ON. So, when your 4000 x 3000 pixels still is imported, the program tries to fit it as best possible into the 1920 x 1080 16:9 space set up in the Edit Mode monitor (Magnification = Fit) by the project preset. In your case, you would expect to see the following with black borders:
Is that what you are taking into the Pan and Zoom workspace? Or are you scaling what is seen there so that the image just fills the 1920 x 1080 space? Does it look like the following after scaling, if you do scale to fit?
And important point to remember is that whatever the case, the Pan and Zoom workspace is not referencing what is seen on the Timeline, but is instead referencing back to the original at the hard drive save location.
An alternative to all of this includes
Bringing you image into the project with the Default Scale to Frame Size disabled in preference. Then the 4000 x 3000 will overflow the space in the 1920 x 1080 monitor. You would then ignore what you see in the Premiere Elements workspace, select the Pan and Zoom Tool to open the Pan and Zoom workspace, and do your pans and zooms on the image that you see there. Click Done when finished. Back in the Premiere Elements workspace render the Timeline and  scale what you see in the Edit Mode monitor as needed.
You also might want to look at beforehand cropping your 4000 x 3000 4:3 to 2200 x 1238 pixels 16:9 and using that as your source media with or without the Default Scale to Frame Size enabled.
Please view to see if the previews look any better and/or there are improvements in the export.
    Thanks.

  • Can't select "Variable Speed" for Still Image Motion

I am using FCP 5.1 to add motion to still images. I've placed my still images on the timeline and added the appropriate keyframes in the Motion tab of the Viewer to Scale, Rotate, and move the stills on screen to my liking. But the speed is locked to "Constant," and I want to change that.
Specifically, am rolling a still image on-screen, freezing it in the middle of the screen a few seconds, and then rolling it off-screen. Doing this is easy: I just add a keyframe and type in the off-screen coordinates, then add another keyframe and type in coordinates somewhere on screen. But I want to vary the speed that the image rolls on-screen, so it moves on-screen quickly but then gradually slows down until it finally stops (freezes) in the middle of the screen.
Unfortunately, the "Setting" popup menu under "Time Remap" in the Motion tab of the viewer is grayed out and locked to "Constant Speed" (and yes, my still image clip is indeed selected and being displayed in the view). I cannot figure out how to unlock that popup so I can select variable speed.
I can choose Variable or Constant speed just fine for any imported "video" clips -- only still images are locked to Constant for some reason. Is this just a feature limitation of FCP 5? Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Many thanks.

Why so much sarcasm in this FCP forum, Studio X?
Yes, it was in the manual, which by the way is quite large. And I didn't say how long it took me to spot that in the manual either -- a long time. I didn't spot it the first time I had read through that section (yes, I had read it before). And the fact is, you didn't know it either, otherwise you may have cared to point it out (for not only myself, but for others reading this forum too).
I participate in numerous other forums on other sites. Many times, people ask questions that are very simplistic to me -- I know the answers and I know those people putting forth the questions could easily have looked up the answer. Nevertheless, I take time to be helpful to others. For truly, some day I may be in their shoes, lacking time to read every part of every manual out there.
I am therefore thankful to those who likewise respond in a tactful manner to my queries, with the productive aim of helping others rather than condemning them. Thank you, David Harbsmeier, for being consistently positive and very helpful in this forum!

  • Format for still images

I recently made a slideshow in FCE, some of the images appeared stretched on my widescreen TV. What format should I use in the easy set up. A couple months ago I made a slide show and the still images looked fine on widescreen, but forgot how I did this. Thanks

Your widescreen TV should have an aspect control which you can set for 4:3 presentations.

  • Pixel dimensions for still images

    Hello all,
I have just ran into a problem that seems to be a sizing problem with Final Cut Express HD. I used to crop my still pics to 1366 px - 768 px (for landscape) and then import them to FCE and export as a quicktime movie. When I brought the quicktime movie into iDVD and created the DVD it seemed to play great on my 46" Samsung tv -- full screen.
I just recently bought a Samsung 60" and when I create the same type of movies, I am getting a huge black border around the whole image (not just top and bottom but sides too). I tried creating a new movie and made all my still images 1920px x 1080 px, and it still comes out the same way.
I can stretch my tv so that they go full screen, but I think there should be a way to create the movie without having to stretch it....just have the tv set for 16:9, and I feel that it should work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks.
    Norm

When you create a DVD, no matter what the pixel dimensions of your original material, it become 720x480 Standard Definition. This is what a DVD is. If you are creating a DVD that has material that is 16x9, then it creates a DVD that is 720x480 but plays back anamorphic, stretching to create the 16x9 screen.
If you play one of your older DVDs that played correctly on your previous TV, does it play correctly or does it also exhibit the black bars?
If it plays correctly then something has changed in the way you are creating your project in FCE.and encoding and burning the DVD.
If the older DVDs also exhibit the same playback problem, then I believe there is a menu setting on your new TV that will tell it how to display Standard Definition material from your DVD player, and you need to adjust that. (There are also settings in the set-top DVD player that tells it what kind of signal to send based on the what kind of display it is hooked up to.)

  • What PS file settings are used for still images for FCE?

I have images to use/create for the titles and transitions in my first FCE4 project. Using Photoshop CS6, the preset for File > New > Film & Video has the prest size and pixel aspect ratio selections.  I thought to use this with HDV 1080p/29.97 and HDV1080/DVCPRO HD 720 (1.33) for any images I need for the project.
Most discussions I see only refer to the pixel size reference for HD image sizes, but nothing addressing the pixel aspect ratio setting for the image.  Are these settings ignored in PS and handled in FCE only? Or does it make better quality images to get this "right" in PS when creating the still image?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm not quite sure I understand your question. In an ideal world, the graphic material you build in PS should match the sequence settings you intend to edit them into - so, if for no other reason, it reduces the amount of reformatting FCE has to do when rendering them.
But frequently you want to build graphics larger than the frame size of the sequence so that you can re-size and reposition the graphic within FCE without losing quality.
The apparent pixel aspect ratio of your graphic can be controlled with FCE by editing the graphic to the timeline, double clicking on the clip in the timeline, and when that timeline clip opens in the viewer, click on the motion tab and adjust the Aspect Ratio Paddle (this is the correction for a 1920 x1080 square pixel clip being placed into an HDV 1440 x 1080 timeline):
In Photoshop, you can change the way your work is displayed by going to the menu View > Pixel Aspect Ratio:
    Does any of this help?

  • Looking for an Image FTP server...

We need to be able to do the following.
    1. Upload multiple files at once.
    2. Administrator can create password protected folders with either read/write or just read access.
    3. View thumbnails of images.
    4. The client must interface using a browser with no extensions installed.
    5. At least 20Gb of data space required.
I've spent about a day looking for something with the above specs but as of yet, I havn't been able to find a service with exactly the same features above.
    Any ideas?

Well, I left it vague because I didn't know if there was a solution like this that we could host on our own server or if this is only found on a "file hosting server."
I'm open to a professional hosting solution...I just don't know of any.
On the other hand, I suspect that there's a solution (Joomla?) that might have this functionality but I just haven't experimented with these open source solutions enough to know.
    FTP is not required.
Our clients need to be able to access about 20GB worth of images. We have servers we can put these images on but we don't have the snappy web interface that would allow the client to view and download. Of course we'd need to then enforce rules for different clients in a variety of folders.
The clients may need only 1 or all of the images.
So far we've been giving our clients access to our ftp but that's rather messy and if they aren't comfortable installing or using an ftp client, they run into problems. They usually try to download things using windows explorer but using this is inconsistent and if they have no technical savy, they get confused and call our Sales Department. Sales then calls me and asks why I can't make it easier.
In other words, they want the client to be able to view thumbnails of images that are available (something like Flickr).
They want to be able to download large versions of those images.
They want the interface to be web-based with no install
I would be looking for a solution that offers multiple file uploads/downloads...
Some of our clients need to upload so I would need to give some users write access (web-based) to unique folders/user.
While other clients just need to get images; these wouldn't need write access.
I've spent a day and a half looking on the web for a solution and can't seem to find exactly what I want. Any help on this is welcome.

  • Changing rate of zoom motion for still image?

    Hey everyone,
I'm working on a short documentary and have a large still image I am zooming out of with the motion tab, setting 2 key frames for zoom and center point at beginning and end.
The rate of the zoom goes slow at first and then speeds up more and more as it goes along, and it's going so fast by the end that you can't see the whole image. So I'm wondering how I can give it an even rate of zoom out, or at least slowing it down at the end.
I tried adding another zoom key frame, but couldn't find where the center point key frame was supposed to be, so it wound up changing it's directory a bit at that point.
There's got to be a way to do this. Thanks again!

Yeah, FC doesn't handle this real well. Using the Ease in sometimes works, but I've found that instead of easing in, it sort of adjusts (subtly) the position of the photo.
What I've done in the past is adjust the speed of the photo "clip" to run longer, so the zoom is slower.
I've also thought the original file size of the photo made a difference, a larger file seems to not have this problem as bad, though I have NOT tested this. For me, this seemed to happen when using smaller files. My PS files are around 30MB each! Yes, lots of rendering when doing anything to them, but that does work.

  • Adjusting time for still images

Is there an easy way to import a series of still images into the timeline and make them all display for the same duration? OR does the time need to be adjusted on each individually?
    Thanks.

Changing the default still duration only changes the duration of the master clips that imported to the project. You would have to re-import all the still after changing the default duration for this to work.
However, if you drop a bazillion stills into a timeline, you can select them all and choose a new duration, it will be applied to all of them, provided they all start out at the same duration.
    Hope this helps -

  • Looking for Java Image Format converter

    hi,
I am looking for an open-source site or so, which has Java code on converting different Image types eg. gif/jpeg etc. to PNG. I am building an application which needs to display images. It would be great to have a tool which takes the image and converts it to the PNG format.
    Can anyone help me out?
    cheers :)
    cleoppatra

hi cleo. there is no tool you can patch into your source. there are two posibilities that i know of.
    1. take a look at the algorith for gif and jepg and chang it to png.
    2. send the link to a server, which you have to program, as a servlet, which will get the html page just as the midp would do, have a normal converter jpg -> png or gif -> png, see if what type of image it is, choose the right converter and convert the pic. format the text the way you want and then send it to the mobile phone. this will make most of the work be much faster since the mobile phone is very slow, and wont be very evectif on converting stuff.
    think about it.

  • Image size for still images

I've got a bunch of 300DPI 8x10 inch images I want to put into iMovie.
Do I need to reduce file size or will iMovie reduce the size automaticlly?
What is the smallest DPI I can use and still have a good image on a 9foot by 12 foot screen.
    Thanks.

  • Flash and XML, looking for new images

When I make changes to the XML file and haven't cleared my
browsers cache, it still displays the old information (FF and IE).
Our banner changes each week so I am constantly adding new stuff. I
also change a single graphic once a week, but the image name
doesn't change... So flash doesn't even load a new graphic when I
    just replace an old one...
I am sure I am missing something easy...
Here is what the Flash looks like:
    http://www.gracebrethren.org.
Is there any way to make Flash check for changes and updates each
time someone refreshes the page (say like an updated XML file
different than what's in cache, or an updated graphic)?
Let me know if you need any more information.

    Thank you for your help.

Ahhhhhh, ok. Figured this one out after digging more.
Here's the answer from another post. Hope it helps someone!
If you need to set an absolute folder url, or you are pulling the content from a server that does not host the content, you can manually update the <projectname>_edge.js file to specify the directory:
    (function($, Edge, compId){
    //images folder
    var im='<SERVER/FOLDER>/images/';
Just beware that if you re-publish the files, you'll need to redo any custom modifications.  I do this for off-server projects and it works very well so long as you make all the changes in each JS file where you need to specify the exact path.
