Looking for suggestions to sync external drives over internet

I have a iMac connected to an external hard drive at my house. I would like to sync this external drive to a another external drive connected to a Mac Mini at my parents house. I would like this sync to happen automatically at night and also be free.
Anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I checked out the rsync stuff but I think its a little over my head. If I had the time or patience I could create a customized solution like that but it seems more trouble than its worth. I am looking more for an application that does the work for you like Crash Plan.
I tested out CrashPlan last night. I installed it on both machines and it was able to backup the files I need very quickly. It supports the ability to set times for the backup which is a big bonus.
The only problem I run into is that it does not make a 1:1 copy of the data. It backs it up to the destination drive in some weird file format that you can not just access the data. If I experienced a failure I would have to use their restore utility to recover the files.
What I would like is that if the drive at my house fails I can run over to my parents, grab that drive, plug it in and be working exactly as before. Crash Plan is so close to being what I want but I just do not want to have to take the time, and trust that their utility will restore the data when I need.

  • Accessing External Drive Over Internet

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and have recently purchased a 1TB external hard drive which I have connected to it by USB. I can access the added disk fine when using my home nework.
I also have a MobileMe account so I would also like to access the drive from anywhere with an internet connection. However, despite it being a documented feature of the base station, I can't actually find any clear instructions or a step by step guide to doing so. Does it mean turning on the 'Back To My Mac' feature? What else needs to be configured?
Any help would be much apprreciated.

    Thanks for your reply.
I followed your instructions but I although I can see the drive as shared in the Finder (http://idisk.me.com/brogan/Public/Pictures/Skitch/Applications-20100910-092842.p ng), I am unable to connect to it.
When trying to connect, I get the following:

I notice that the following is also displayed in my 'Back To My Mac' tab under MobileMe preferences.

I am trying to access from my Work Network (it was fine from home) and can currently access my iDisk with no problems. Any ideas?

I AM LOOKING FOR ADVANTEST R3271 LABVIEW6.1 DRIVER(GPIB),PLEASE HELP ME. THANKS.

    Hi,
I am not sure what the R3271 is, but we have a driver for the R3272 (Spectrum Analyzer with GSM option). Normally API's do not change significantly and so it is very likely that you will be able to use this driver for your application. You can get it by going to www.ni.com/idnet. The easiest way to get the the page is just to seach by vendor.
    Hope this helps out.

  • Looking for a script which gives Drive,Diskspacefree,Databasename,Filename,Filetype,Filesize,Spaceused, spacefree, free(%),MaxsizeMB,autogrowthsize,Filegroup

    Hi All,
I need a T-script  for sql 2005 and 2008 which should give output as:
Looking for a script which gives Drive,Diskspacefree,Databasename,Filename,Filetype,Filesize,Spaceused, spacefree, free(%),MaxsizeMB,autogrowthsize,Filegroup

In the list below, everything that is in bold face is available in sys.master_files:
    Drive
    Diskspacefree,
    Databasename
    Filename
    Filetype
    Filesize
    Spaceused,
    spacefree,
    free(%),
    MaxsizeMB
    autogrowthsize
    Filegroup
Everything in bold face is in sys.master_files. Diskspacefree is also fairly simple; you can get it with xp_fixeddrives.
Filegroup requires you sys.filegroups in every database, although you can hardcode "PRIMARY" for the file_id = 1.
To get space used per file, it appears that you need to need to visit every database and run fileproperty(filename, 'SpaceUsed') to get the data.
You need to revisit the topics for the views and function I have listed here. xp_fixeddrives is undocumented, but the output is very simple to grasp.

If you no longer have the computer(s) you want to deauthorise,
Log in to iTunes,  go to "view your account info" on the itunes store,  deauthorise all five, (Please Note: this can only be done Once every 12 months)  and then re-authorize your current Computer(s) one at a time.

  • Looking for a well-mannered external FW drive

I've ordered Leopard and have decided to add a new external 500MB FW drive to take advantage Time Machine. Is there a reasonably quiet one that will play nicely with both Time Machine and my G4 Mini? Do I need to order a powered hub since I boot from a partition on my Maxtor or can I daisy-chain without getting an ugly performance hit?

I tend to buy enclosures and bare drives but at work we are currently selling Western Digital My Book drives and Buffalo drives. I grabbed a 500GB My Drive for my wife and we've been happy with it. Whatever you drive, be sure to format it, nearly all external drives come formatted for Windows today.
Generally, daisy chaining two to three drives is no problem, beyond that it is a crap shoot in my experience. That's when I look at a hub.

  • Looking for help to improve Airport performance over LAN (WAN is fine)

Ok, I've read through several threads on this forum that address problems people are having with slow performance with Airport. I've also checked out all of the Apple KBs that address Airport, recommended settings. Unfortunately my issue isn't addressed by anything I've read to date.
The bottom line is that both download and upload performance between any of my devices and the internet is fine, no problems. I am paying for 30MBps download from Verizon FIOS, I routinely get 20, and I'm guessing that the delta is Verizon's problem, not my network's. However, streaming from my media server to another device on the wireless LAN is a different story entirely. I get somewhere between 1 and 2 MBps, tops, and this poses big problems for streaming music and movies.
My network is comprised of 3 Airport Expresses. One of them is a MC414LL/A model. This one is connected to my Verizon FIOS Actiontec MI424WR router (which I have set to bridge-mode according to the instructions provided at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r17679150-Howto-make-ActionTec-MI424WR-a-network -bridge) via CAT5 ethernet. This Airport Express is set to "create a network" network mode, "802.11 only (5GHz) - 802.11b/g/n" radio mode (although I have also tried "802.11 only (5GHz) - 802.11/n only (2.4 GHz)" radio mode, and this didn't solve the problem). Finally, I have chosen 2.4 and 5GHz channels that have little interference (2 and 161 respectively). My other two Airport Expresses are MB321LL/A models and are set to "Extend a wireless network" network mode, with the 5GHz network chosen as the network that they extend. (I have tried switching over to having them extend the 2.4GHz network, and performance gets worse, not better.)
I am using a late 2009 Mac Mini as a media server. It is connected to the 5GHz network (though I've tried the 2.4GHz network), and it runs XBMC and JRiver media servers (not simultaneously, either one or the other.) I have a PS3 and a Sony Blu Ray player, each plugged into one of the MB321LL/A Airport Expresses via CAT5 ethernet, and I stream media to each of these devices via one or the other media server (both devices are DNLA-enabled). My Mac Mini has a 3TB external hard drive connected via FireWire 800, which is where all of my media resides. In addition to streaming media over the network, I have a TV plugged directly into the Mac Mini. When I play media to this TV, performance is outstanding, so I'm confident my poor performance to the PS3 and Sony BDP is a network issue, not an issue with the external drive.
Although my building has several other wireless networks, only one of them is 5 GHz, and it isn't using channel 161. The 2.4 GHz band is crowded with several networks, although channel 2 is usually in the clear. I have tried switching let Airport choose a channel automatically, and I haven't noticed a difference. It has occurred to me that the problem could be with how I bridged the Verizon Actiontec router and not with any of the Airports, but I don't get any errors (e.g. double NAT errors, which some people who have bridged improperly get), and I am pleased with my download and upload speeds to the internet. The issue is only on my LAN. Finally, yes, all of my firmware is up to date, version 7.6.3 on all three Airport Expresses.
Can anyone offer me suggestions for how I can get better performance streaming media from my server to the two playback devices? Since all 3 Airport Expresses support 5GHz, I'd have thought I'd be able to take advantage of 802.11n speeds when streaming between them. (MB321LL/A  supports "Draft N", but does this matter?) With the settings that I'm currently using, I can't stream faster than 2MBps (and that's on a good day), which is below what I ought to be able to get rom 802.11g. This is especially problematic when I try to stream hi res (96 MHz / 24 bit or higher)  music files, whether uncompressed or compressed. I hear awful pulsing sounds through my speakers. If I pause the track and let my streaming device buffer, I might get 10 or 15 seconds of clean playback, but then it starts the pulsing again as soon as the buffered music is finished playing. On occasion when I stream music from my iPhone via Airplay to one of the Airport Expresses, I get clean playback most of the time, but on occasion the music cuts out. (It's my understanding the Airplay requires ~800 Kbps, which seems consistent with my LAN speed usually being between 1 and 2 Mbps but sometimes dropping).
I have iStubler and I've used the Apple network diagnostics -- these are the tools that led me to choose channels 2 and 161 for 2.4 and 5GHz respectively. I'm sure I could be using these tools to learn more about my network's performance, but I'm sure what to look for.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

Ok, cool. I'm really glad that the issue has been isolated. Thanks a ton for your insight!
Hopefully I can find a spot where the signal strength of the hub is noticably better but that isn't too inconvenient for an ethernet run. My Sony BDP, which is the device connected to the problem basestation, has wifi capability, so I could always ditch the ethernet cable if the best spot for the basestation doesn't permit a cable run. But I'm aware that ethernet usually offers faster transfer speeds than wifi. Moreover, I'm not sure that the Sony BDP supports 5GHz. It might be a 2.4GHz-only device, in which case I'll have new interference issues to contend with, since like I said in my original post, there are several other 2.4GHz networks in my building.
Anyhow, now that I understand the problem, I can figure out a solution. Thanks again.

  • What to look for when purchasing iPhone external battery?

Next month I’ll be taking a 5 day trip to NYC and I’ll be using my built-in iPhone 4 Google Maps GPS a lot, so I’m in the market to buy an external battery. So with that said, what should I look for when purchasing one? I’ve noticed a lot of these advertise the mAh (milliampere-hour), and then some will also advertise the amperes themselves (i.e. 5200 mAh (2 amps)). What’s the difference when they advertise both?

DVI support is a must and most LCDs in the size that you are looking for are going to have it.
Your MB can drive a display with a resolution of up to 1920 x 1200 which just happens to be the resolution of the 23" Apple Cinema HD Display. I didn't want to pay Apple prices for a display, so I went looking at Dell. I picked up a 20" 2007WFP display from them for about $360 shipped and it works like a charm with the Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter.
I prefer displays that use a S-IPS panel over the more common and cheaper TN panels. S-IPS is much better for color reproduction and that is why Apple uses them in their Cinema Displays. Dell uses the same panel is some of their 20" models - I got one - but some buyers are very upset that they got a TN panel instead of the S-IPS panel. I was lucky I guess.

  • Dual identity for MPB: Leopard on  External Drive

I will be getting a new MBP at work, and am wandering if theres a way to have it serve a second purpose as my personal computer at home.
As the work computer it will come loaded with all the work stuff on internal drive, and be configured and updated as such whenever the IT dept decides to run updates on the company network, etc.
My plan is to have an external drive that would basically serve as the "personal computer", completely independent from the work computer. I would like to have Leopard loaded on an USB drive, to boot and run off this drive, and hold all my personal software (CS3, Logic, etc) and documents (music, photos, etc). So basically the external drive would hold the entire 2nd identity for this MBP.
    My questions are:
    1) Is this possible - will Leopard boot from an external drive?
    2) If this is possible, how will performance be affected by running the OS and Apps, docs all from one external drive (primary concern is OS and Apps).
    3) Does USB vs. Firewire matter (other than transfer rate)? I would like the drive to be bus-powered to maintain mobility. Is this possible with firewire?
    4) Is there a External drive of choice for this task? I am looking at the LaCie Rugged 200G 7200RPM USB drive for the small size and rubber case (and appears to be bus-powered, but does this include Firewire?)
    5) What am I missing in this plan? Is there a better option to do this (other than buy my own MBP
    Thanks for all your help.
    t

    1) Yes, but I recommend a FireWire HD—it's faster.
    2) You shouldn't notice any difference because everything you run is loaded into RAM
    3) Yes—see 1)
    4) If you're going to be using it at home, why is mobility an issue? Personally, I like Seagate FW/USB combos; others are satisfied with LaCies
    5) I suggest just putting a bootable backup/clone of what the company provides onto the ext HD, then you can install your own software onto that. When the company updates the machine, you can do an incremental backup onto the ext HD which will leave all unique stuff there in place.

  • Using iTunes library from an external drive over wifi

    Hello Community Peeps!
I'm looking for some advice and hope someone has the same setup that I'm hoping to make.
I currently have an iMac and recently had to replace the screen. As the machine is now out of warranty I'm thinking to sell it on before I get any further problems. I Currently have all my work and entire iTunes library stored on an external drive connected via usb to the iMac.
As a graphic designer i need to be fairly mobile and am thinking about changing my setup to this, so that when i'm in one location I can use a bigger screen and when I need to be out and mobile I can just take my MBP out with me and get by designing on that screen.
    I am thinking of getting purchasing;
    • The most powerful 15" MBP latest I can afford (probably with 2GB graphics).
    • Separate 27" display to connect the MBP to when I am in one location.
    • Airport base station (not time capsule) to connect my external drive to via USB to make it a wifi drive.
I already have Apple TV but have been told that in order to have my Apple TV access my iTunes library (on the external hard drive connected to the base station) over wifi I will need the MBP switched on and iTunes open. Thats no problem as long as I can do it over wifi.
I will be using the latest OSX and latest iTunes.
I have no since been told by a friend that iTunes has glitches in it and will be unreiable inaccessing my library on the hard drive over wifi.
So my question is, does anyone else have this kind of setup and what is their experience on itunes accessing it's library stored on what is effectively a wifi drive.
    And advice gratefully received!
    Thanks

That won't get your your "library".  Your library, in essence, is (was?) a file called library.itl in your iTunes folder.  This is a database with a listing of which media files you have and where they are, long with playlists, ratings, and a bunch of other things (which artwork goes with which album).  If all you have on the external drive are the media files then when your old computer died it took the library.itl file with it.

If you want your full library listing back then you will have to recover it from your bakup drive (which is why you have it).  Alternatively you can create a brand new library file, add the media to it, and start new.

  • Looking for a replacement m2010us hard drive adapter

    Hello all,
I have a mostly intact Compaq m2010us, sans HDD caddy/adapter. I searched a little online, and found a few different adapters being described as the proper one. Is there still a way to purchase one through HP or equivelent source? Just trying to fix and polish this up and donate it to a student in need.
    Thank you,
    -J

Seagate is recommended due to the 5 year warranty, though other manufacturer's are good and work well and usually offers 3 year warranties. As was said above, any SATA drive will work, whether it's 150 or 300, though the laptop only will run at 150 speed.
I recommend getting a 7200rpm drive with as much cache as possible. A lot of newer drives are offering 16MB caches which show a strong lead in performance over other 7200rpm drives.
    For instance:
    * The Seagate ST9200420AS (200GB, 7200 rpm, 16MB, SATA 300, 5 yr warranty)
    * The Hitachi Travelstar 7k200 (200GM, 7200 rpm, 16MB, SATA 150, 3 yr warranty)
The difference between these two is the SATA version, with the Seagate running a faster version of SATA which will not be taken advantage of by the MacBook, however future models or purchases by you may in fact use SATA 300 so it may be a good purchase if you plan to swap it during future upgrades. Further the 5 year warranty over 3 years is nice.
The recommendations above are if you're looking for a lot of storage with maximum performance. If you simply want a large drive with average or stock performance consider the HITACHI Travelstar 5K250 (250GB).
