Looking for Word equivalent

Hello. I'm just making the switch to mac. What is the mac equivalent to MS Word? Also MS Office, Publisher, Excel, and Paint? I'm sick and tired of viruses and crashing on windows, so I really don't want to put windows programs on my macs. Thanks, Mike

The Mac Business Unit at Microsoft have written numerous version of Office for Mac (Apple Store - $399). These are actually pretty good (better than the Windows versions IMHO) although Mac users only get Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage (our version of Outlook) (No Publisher, Visio, Paint, Access). These aren't windows programmes but full blown Mac programmes. If you regularly work with people who use Office on PCs this may be your best bet. Don't buy the Pro version - this only adds the PC Emulator VirtualPC and as a MacBook owner BootCamp is the better option if you ever come over all funny again and feel the need to go back to the dark side.
As Thomas states NeoOffice is a free version that is largely compatible with Office files but it is a little rough around the edges (but at free versus $400)you may wish to tolerate that.
AppleWorks (From the Apple Store Online $79) is an excellent programme that used to be bundled with (mostly consumer) Macs it included Drawing, Painting, Word Processor, Database, Spreadsheet and Presentation components and was very useful although it used odd file formats so converting to send to PC users (or even other Mac users) was more of a challenge. iWorks is a more modern suite and is Universal (Apple Works is PowerPC chip only so will work in emulation on your MacBook - shouldn't be a problem though. iWorks (From Apple Online $79)only includes Pages (Word Processing) and Keynote (Presentation). So if you're after a whole package you're out of luck with Apple branded software.

Looking for chmod equivalent for Windows

A little back story, I've managed to cobble together an After Effects psuedo plugin installer for one of my upcoming scripts. One hiccup was dealing with file permissions, to properly install the plugin. After many searches, trial & errors, and finally help from Lloyd Alvarez I managed to get a proper working piece of code for updating file permissions on Mac. there's a lot more to the code, but this is the primary permissions update snippit.

Now I am in the process of finding a Windows equivalent to this. I found info on CACLS ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490872.aspx ), but have been seeing tons of "it doesn't work...", "not compatible with newer os..." and such around the interwebs. Not sure if anyone here can expand upon those claims. I ideally would like to use something that is as universal as possible with Windows 7, XP, Vista. Worse case scenario, I would just provide instructions so the user can manually change the permissions, but I am trying to simplify the process by keeping the user from having to dig into files on their system. Would love to hear any thoughts. Thanks.

IRR, looking for an equivalent to the XIRR in Excel.

Hi,
when working with irregular dates in cash-flows I used XIRR and XNPV in excel.
Could not find an equivalent in Numbers 08-09 so have to create dailies what for 10 year projects is a bit cumbersome and prone to errors when converting daily interest to annuals.
Anyone found a shortcut (equivalent to the Excel functions) for this in Numbers?

I have not used the financial functions so bear with me if I'm way off base. XIRR is not available so you seem to be forced into using daily data, the vast majority of which will be zeros. One of your concerns is errors due to the large table of data you'll need. So here is my idea on how to eliminate the errors by having it create the "dailies" for you from your much shorter list of cash flow data:
1. Create a new sheet with a new table. Column B of this table will be dates; one row for every day for the entire period (yes, about 3600 rows for 10 years). The easy way to create this long table is to make it a two row table at first, put a date in the header cell B1, enter the formula =B1+1 in B2, then you can drag down the handle at the bottom left corner of the table to make it 3600 rows long with the formula in each row (do the dragging after the next step).
2. Use the SUMIF function in column C to automatically fill in the dollar figures from your much shorter original table. As an example, let's say your cash flow data is in Table 1 on Sheet 1. The dates are in cells B2-F2 and the dollars are in cells B3-F3. The formula would be:
cell C2 =SUMIF(Sheet 1 :: Table 1 :: $B$2:$F$2,B2,Sheet 1 :: Table 1 :: $B$3:$F$3)
This will copy the dollars for that date from your original table to this new one.
Now do the drag down to make a 3600 row table
3. Use the IRR function on column C of this new table.
This was actually harder to write up than to do. I hope I made it clear enough to understand.

Thanks, I do not understand how to create a page break from code using the code from the link you supplied.
If I was reading a file and adding lines to the text control.
When I get to a certain point, I want to create a page break and then finish writing the rest of the lines.
TX TextControl will do that, but it does not support java.

What is the equivalent of the Notepad on the Macbook Air?

I am supposing you are looking for a text editor, and NOT a word processor.
I was one looking for an equivalent, and found some difficulty in finding one. IMHO, Apple devastated TextEdit with the advent of Lion. They added "features" which removed its ability to act as a simple text editor. For a while, I simply installed a copy of the Snow Leopard version, but was on the lookout for a super-simple editor for editing txt files, and not adding any formatting, paragragh styles and other features which can ruin batch and text files. I also did not want anything which littered the disk with "versions".
If you are truly looking for the closest equivalent to "Notepad", I have found an app in the Mac App Store, curiously called "Notepad", a simple TXT Editor By Kupon.BG Ltd. It is even better than Apple's old editor.
Just do a search within the app store for "notepad", and select the first entry...the one by Kupon. Or use this link.

Looking for a calendar

I want to be able to make a list of tasks for the day without assigning them to a specific time slot, but that's not an option on my BB calendar. First, can I add an app for a different calendar---seems like I read that the calendars are tied to your BB email address??? And can someone recommend a calendar that might suit my needs? Keep it simple, please. I am technologically challenged
On a side note, I had a Droid and am SO happy to be back to a BB, even if others (like my husband)call me crazy!

Well, let's not wait for the future. Here it is: On Firefox you can download a video helper and install it. That enables you to go any site on the internet with video. If you want to download a video to your desktop, let's say, you look for the swirling rainbow color balls, and next to it is a symbol that when you click on it reveals the video playing. You click the video title, and it is downloaded to your desktop if you so choose that location. Can I do that with Safari? Can I go on the internet and look for the equivalent download helper for mac? I don't want to always download videos using Firefox, though it's very easy....Thanks

Looking for media picker ANE

Does anyone know of a Media Picker native extension for iOS and Android?
On iOS the extension would allow me to bring up an MPMediaPickerController, select a song from the user's library (iPod), and somehow give me a way to load and play that song in AIR. Also looking for the equivalent functionality on Android. Do you think either of these exist somewhere?

Equivalent for Word's Format Painter?

I've bought iWork 09 to use on my MBA as a substitute for Word. One of the feature I used most in Word is the format painter, where you copy complete formatting from one area to another with one click.
Is there any equivalent to this in Pages?

You don't have to.
The way styles work in Pages they are just like the Format Painter in that you pick at what you like, except you give it a name and get to reuse it. Pages styles always work from samples of text.
Pages also has three styles: character, paragraphs and lists, with possibly the way outlines works making that a 4th style. So you can certainly take whatever you want and use it however you want.
Copy and pasting styles which is similar, is a very poor way of doing it because it doesn't maintain consistency and when you later change your mind on how the subheads or body text should look, you would have to go back and manually reapply it everywhere.
With Pages' styles you modify the look of a sample of say the subhead and then Redefine the style from that. So again it is pretty much the way you have been working, only easier.

I blog on TypePad using Word 2007 and documents freeze when I'm looking at them in Windows explorer; why do I get the error message that Mozilla is looking for a script?

I have now had two error messages - the first one looked for this script: Script: resource://gre/modules/XPCOMUtils.jsm:258. The second one (today) looked for Script: resource://gre/components/nsPrompter.js:68.
I have reset my word template, also reset word registry for data and options (as per Microsoft's help pages) for both those 'fixes' there was an initial improvement, but the problem happened again after I reposted on my blog today and then went to Windows explorer to view my files. It seems to 'seize' as I select a file, so that the preview does not appear (for up to 15-20mins).
I see on the internet using the second script as a search just now that one other has had a similar problem and one also since Mozilla 4 upgrade. My problems have also been pretty much since I upgraded.
It happens (apart from my fixes) every time I go to look at a word document via Windows explorer. Excel files are less affected.
One web suggestion is to clear the cache, but I am hesitant to lose all my passwords unless I have to.

I still have the problem although I uninstalled Mozilla (clearing the cache didn't work and neither did Word diagnostics), so have ended up thinking it could be Norton (the manual update worked x1) or Windows. Today I found an answer: disable the preview pane in Windows Explorer - there's a history of problems with this view.

Need an app to edit and sign word documents (sign with stylus)! Notability let's me sign but doesn't pull up letter head, quickofficepro let's me edit but not sign. Looking for an app that does both

I am looking for an app where I can edit word documents as well as sign them. I am a physical therapist whose looking to cut down on paper work. Someone types my evaluations and then we print them out for me to edit by hand and then they go back and make the corrections on the computer then w print them and sign them to send off. Recently I have begun using apps where I can pull up the document and edit it thru quickofficepro or through cloudon, but I cannot sign them using a stylus pen. I also have notability which I can use to sign the documents, but it doesn't save the document as a doc, it's either a PDF or rtf. Also, in notability, it doesn't pull up the letter head for our company which is a template with our logo on it. So I need an app where I can both edit and sign my documents by hand using a stylus. If someone could provide me with any relevant information I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time.

I am looking for a word processing app

I am looking for a word processing app that I can use for sending .doc and .docx format papers via email or uploading them to websites directly from my ipad 2 without having to export them to or sync them with my actual computer. Does the Pages app allow users to do this? I need to make a purchase of such an app soon. If this app is incapable of these actions, can anyone suggest an app or design an app for me that does them?

Pages can export documents in MS Word format. When I last did this (with Pages '09, the Mac version), the result was a .doc file.
Note that this is a translation, and like most translations, it's not always a perfect one. Some features of Pages are not supported in MS Word, and some Word features are not supported in Pages.
