Looking into macs a few question

Hey everyone, i'm looking in to buying a mac laptop and i had a few quesitons.
1. Im an active web designer and i do a lot of graphic designs, so which mac would be best?
2. are you able to install different web browsers, such as opera, firefox, etc.. because i like to test all of my site in serval browsers.

With either the MacBook or the MacBook Pro you can use an external monitor. The external monitor on the MacBook can go up to 1920x1200 resolution, but the MacBook Pro can go up to 2560x1600 dual-link DVI, so if you wanted to use the 30-inch widescreen monitors you would need the Pro.
With Remote Desktop from Microsoft you can open a remote control session to a PC, so you can also test out your web sites on that platform using the Mac as a console:

  • Considering a Mac Pro - Few Question

I am disappointed with my Intel iMac due to lack of USB ports (hubs don't work with some of my usb hardware) and the ridiculous audio/optical combo port. So I think I may go Mac Pro when Leopard is released. A few questions need to be answered if you would be so kind. A few caveats first...
    A) Mac Pros are expensive for me, so I need to save money where I am able.
    B) The Mac Pro will double as a media player for my Home Theater system. I have a connection for DVI and Toslink
    OK, now the questions...
    1. Does the Mac Pro come with the trays for the extra hard drives? I would like to purchase more drives separately. Can I do this, and what type of drives are used, SATA?
    2. RAM from Apple is expensive. Is there a less costly alternative? It must be a dependable brand. Please include part number if available. Thanks!
    3. Will reduction from 2.66 to 2.0 ghz make that much difference? I like grinding MP2 videos to H.264. Really, will it be worth the additional $264?
    4. I can use both DVI or HDMI to go to my Home Theater system. Currently, starting the Home Theater changes the resolution on my iMac. I would like to avoid this. Should I get another NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, or will the dual port on the one card be able to be set to a different resolution output? I would like to be able to still work on my Mac while the kids are watching something in the theater.
    5. As for audio, will I be able to run headphones, external speakers and optical out all at the same time? I am assuming yes, but just want to make sure.
    6. I am also assuming the Mac Pros are quiet. Noise is one of my biggest enemies since I do quite a bit of audio work. I have not heard a single complaint regarding noise from Mac Pros. Are they that quiet?
    Thanks in advance everyone!

    4. I can use both DVI or HDMI to go to my Home
Theater system. Currently, starting the Home Theater
changes the resolution on my iMac.
You should be able to run different resolutions on the built-in display and external display if Mirroring is turned off in "Displays" System Preference.
    I would like to
avoid this. Should I get another NVIDIA GeForce 7300
GT, or will the dual port on the one card be able to
be set to a different resolution output? I would like
to be able to still work on my Mac while the kids are
    watching something in the theater.
The two DVI ports can run at different resolutions.
    5. As for audio, will I be able to run headphones,
external speakers and optical out all at the same
time? I am assuming yes, but just want to make sure.
The optical out uses the same socket al the audio out, so you can't use both at once. You could add an iMic <http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/> to get an additional audio output. There are also other PCI-Express, FireWire, or USB audio interfaces available.
You can also use an AirPort Express for audio output. It is designed for iTunes, but Airfoil <http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/> will send any audio to it.
You may need Audio Hijack Pro <http://rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/> for different applications to send audio to different, or multiple, outputs simultaneously.
You may also want to consider the Apple TV <http://www.apple.com/appletv/> for audio and video connections to your home theater.

  • How to look into all fields (beginner question)

    Hello,
I have a table which contains a series of columns like
    'GRPREF00', 'GRPREF01', 'GRPREF02', ... 'GRPREF19'.
If I want to know whether the number 34 is in one of these columns, I use the following command:
    Select * from <table_name> where 34 in ('GRPREF00', 'GRPREF01', 'GRPREF02', ... 'GRPREF19');
Obviously I cannot use the "..." and I am writing all the time the whole series of columns.
In order to shorten this command, I have already tried teh following command:
    Select * from <table_name> where 34 in (*);
    but this didn't work.
Does anybody know whether/how it is possible to define a range of columns to look in or whether/how it is possible to search through all the columns of a table?
    Thanks
    Dominique

    Hello
That was really the gist of the original question. It was to find out if any columns contain 34 rather than any columns named 34. Just as a side note, your query would return 0 rows unless the column name was surrounded by double quotes when it was created:
    CREATE TABLE dt_test_col (34 varchar2(10))
    CREATE TABLE dt_test_col ("34" varchar2(10))
    SELECT COUNT(1) counter
    FROM user_tab_columns
    WHERE column_name='34'
AND table_name= 'DT_TEST_COL' ;Another option, which is similar to one of the methods the OP tried is:
    WITH test_data AS
    (     SELECT
              CAST(NULL AS VARCHAR2(2)) AS col1,
              CAST(NULL AS VARCHAR2(2)) AS col2,
              CAST(NULL AS VARCHAR2(2)) AS col3,
              CAST(NULL AS VARCHAR2(2)) AS col4,
              CAST(NULL AS VARCHAR2(2)) AS col5,
              '34' AS col6,
              CAST(NULL AS VARCHAR2(2)) AS col7,
              CAST(NULL AS VARCHAR2(2)) AS col8,
              CAST(NULL AS VARCHAR2(2)) AS col9,
              CAST(NULL AS VARCHAR2(2)) AS col10
         FROM
              dual
    SELECT
    FROM
         test_data
    WHERE
         '34' IN (col1,col2,col3,col4,col5,col6,col7,col8,col9,col10)
This does mean that you have to list all of the columns you want to check in the in statement, but the tradeoff is that you don't end up having to write dynamic sql.
The IN statement will likely be transformed by the optimizer into:
Predicate Information (identified by operation id):
       3 - filter("TEST_DATA"."COL1"='34' OR "TEST_DATA"."COL2"='34' OR
                  "TEST_DATA"."COL3"='34' OR "TEST_DATA"."COL4"='34' OR "TEST_DATA"."COL5"='34' OR
                  "TEST_DATA"."COL6"='34' OR "TEST_DATA"."COL7"='34' OR "TEST_DATA"."COL8"='34' OR
"TEST_DATA"."COL9"='34' OR "TEST_DATA"."COL10"='34')Which saves you even more typing! :-)

  • PC to Mac - A few questions ?

    Hi Everyone;
I currenty have a PC and I'm really sick and tired of Windows. I've been considering for quite sometime now about switching to a Mac - specfically a Powerbook.
I've heard that there are issues acessing internet sites using Safari, Problems opening Emails from PC's on Macs etc.. Do I/Will I have any issues or are these simply anti mac/pro windows speak ?
    Thanks.

Switching is a good idea. I used PCs for many years - OSX is waaaaay superior.
Safari - works fine for me.Great thing about the mac is that because each app runs in it's "own space" - it's easy to run more than one, so you can run Safari most of the time, Firefox, Opera or one of the others if you want to - you can have one window open in Safari, another in Opera and another in Firefox or whatever browser you like. Compatibility wise, I haven't had any problems - it's true a few years ago some websites were difficult to open, but not now.
Mail - Works fine for me. If you prefer Microsoft product you can get Entourage -which is part os Office 2004 for the mac and works like Outlook.
Honestly, unless you have a pressing need to be on a PC - particular pc app not available on the mac, I'd say go for it - you'll enjoy using it.
    BUT....
When you get the machine, take some time, post here and make sure you understand how it works and how things are arranged - it will save you getting frustrated by unfamiliarity and habits and will enable you to appreciate how elegantly the OS is structured and how easily it works.
    Good luck.

  • Can you use a Mac Mini to share documents between several devices? iPhones, MacBooks, iPads, etc...? We are a home based business with several locations across the state and are having Google Drive issues, looking into Mac Mini options.

We are having Google Drive issues (some files won't sync) and it's causing us trouble with our business communication. Is there any way to use a Mac Mini to share documents between two people in different areas similar to google drive? Would this just be done through iCloud?

If you use Numbers, Pages and KeyNote it si very easy to sync those document among all the Apple devices. You need montain Lion on the Mac  and at least iOS 5 on the mobile devices.
I show those document on my Mac, iPad 4 and iPhone 4S

  • Finally switching from pc to mac..few questions.

I got a macbook pro, slowly gearing up to migrate everything over. I'm going to use Detto to do the migration. They assured me my entire itunes library and playlist would transfer. I have iphone, and 3 ipods. My itunes library on computer is much larger than any of the ipods. Is this gonna fly? Or do I need to buy another third party software to transfer everything? My iphone works great with outlook, switching to entourage, I'm going to make sure that my contacts/calendar transfer before even thinking about the iphone. Is it going to be plug and play? Anything I should watch out for? I am a total mac rook, love of iphone got me to switch to the mac...
    Thanks, mike

http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/ will get you started with switching.

  • Switching from windows xp to i mac maybe got a few questions?

I am considering purchasing an i mac. I do a little gaming which i already know the games i play are supported by mac. My question is i know purchasing an i mac everything is self contained in the monitor. What happens when new games/expansions come out for the games i play? Such as if they require like direct x 8 or 9 say the new game needs direct x 10 is that even a concern or will video be all screwy. I am not a major gamer. I do play a few though my passion lies in the photo an movie an audio part of the i mac. I am just not completely convinced if i should purchase an i mac. I am looking at the new pentium based i mac as well not sure if that will mean anything. I jus don't want to invest almost 2k into a system that i will be disappointed in a year with. I am not made of money so I want to make the right decision. I won't have this kinda money again. Thank You all in advance for your replys if anyone can answer these questions. Help me with whats the best way to go because i am sick of windows an all the problems that come with windows systems.
    David

Personally, I faced the same situation as you. I'd rather use my home computer for photos, movies, and audio tinkering... points where Macintoshes just do wonders out of the box. Other than that general program use (word processing, web browsing, etc.) of course functions equally well. Beyond that, sure, I'd like it to play some games.
The only game I regularly play right now is World of Warcraft. Knowing this runs on a Mac and the specifications of the new iMac's... I went ahead and bought one. Since getting my iMac, World of Warcraft plays very well under Rosetta. With the Universal binary expected soon, the performance should increase drastically.
I had a similar concern with regard to game performance on a Mac. Previously, if you wanted a high end graphics card, you had to invest in a PowerMac (tower case). Although the graphics cards built into the laptops, iMacs, and mini functioned... they were typically lower models that may not perform up to snuff. Throw in the fact that bus interface suffered when compared to similarly configured Windows systems and games perform, just not as great.
Apple (maybe because of Intel's hardware configurations) got it right with the new iMac... fast graphics card with good memory configurations (128 or 256 megabytes) coupled with fast bus interface speeds.
With regard to Macs and quantity of games, I haven't used a Macintosh since OS 8. Games came out for the Mac back then, but not in abundance. After I purchased my iMac I visited an Apple store to get a cable to hook up an external monitor. While there I perused the games section and was genuinely surprised. There are more titles out than I thought.
As far as DirectX goes ... Macs use OpenGL for rendering most 3D games. You may have seen OpenGL as an alternative option to DirectX in some Windows games. It's just the way Macs do things ... different.

  • A few questions before I buy a new iMac/Mac mini and sign up for Creative Cloud.

    Hello Everyone,
I am looking to purchase a new Apple computer and sign up for Creative Cloud within the next week and I have a few questions that should be answered before I proceed.
My wife and I own a business and we will be using the CS6 apps to create brochures, Constant Contact mailings, product package inserts, edit product photography for print and web use, and short HD how-to videos. We are not graphics professionals or power users and wont be doing anything too complicated.
Any help and answers will be greatly appreciated.
I will start with the hardware questions first:
I am trying to decide between the iMac and the Mac mini.
The iMac is a 2.7Ghz Quad-core Intel core i5 and comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 16GB, which I will do for sure. It comes with a Radeon HD 6770M graphics card with 512MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 1TB HDD that runs at 7200RPM. This unit meets the specs required.
The 2.5Ghz Mac Mini comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 8GB, I will also do this. It has a Radeon HD 6630M graphics card with 256MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 500GB HDD that runs at 5400RPM. This unit meets all the spec(I think) except for the speed of the HDD.
Question: Will the mini run the software without too much of an issue considering the speed of the HDD?
Question: Will the iMac run the software significantly better to justify the price difference?
I already have 1 mini(purchased 4 months ago, with the same specs listed above) and will be purchasing a second computer for my wifes desk. If the mini will run CS6 fine, that is great and we can save a few bucks. If my mini will not run CS6 well, I will get the iMac for her desk as she will be doing the bulk of the work in that regard anyway.
Now a couple of software questions.
After reading hundreds of reviews and forum posts over the last few days I have seen many people having this or that issue. It seems to me that most of the issues are because of upgrades from Lion to Mountian Lion after installing CS6 first or trying to open CS3,4,5 files in CS6.
If you want to know what issues have me concerned take a look at just this one forum:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2012/07/adobe-cs-apps-mountain-lion-no-known-issues.html
Similar issues are discussed in the Apple forums as well as many other places around the web.
I am not a computer professional but I know enough to maintain my systems and keep them running smoothly.
We do not have any Adobe software installed on my mini and will not be opening any files from previous versions of Adobe product in the new CS6 software. These will be a clean installs on pristine systems running fully updated Mountian Lion OS's on both machines and creating new files from scratch.
Question: Should I be expecting any issues like the ones I have read in the forums and blogs or are these just the normal things that happen when upgrading to new software with multiple hardware configurations?
My feeling is that we will not be having too much of a problem due to the clean installs and no files from previous versions.
Next up, the Creative Cloud(CC) FAQ states that you can install on 2 machines but can't open stuff at the same time.
Question: Does this mean we can't be using any CS6 apps at the same time or just not using the same app at the same time?
Example: PS and PS on both machines at same time = No, PS on one and Dreamweaver on the other at the same time=Yes?
The CC FAQ page says Adobe will add Lightroom 4 later in 2012 while the main CC page lists it as available now.
    Question: Which is true?
My mini is registered to me, with my name, iTunes account, Apple ID etc.
Question: Do I need to do the initial set-up of the new machine with all my information to ensure the CS6 suite works on both machines? Do the computers need to be registered(as far as Apple configuration is concerned) to same person for them to work on one CC account or can I install CS6 on any 2 machines regardless of how they were initially set-up?
This may seem like a silly question but I want to avoid any problems before they happen.
Well, those are all of my questions at the moment. To anyone who made it this far in my looooong post, Thank You so much for your time. I appreciate your expertise and knowledge and hope that you can help me make this decision.
    Cheers,
    Alex Bogdan

    Alex,
I'll try and answer your questions as best I can.
    Qn 1 Which Mac.
Ans:- As I understand it both units will run Adobe CS6.
Which one really depends on what you wand from CS6. If you are looking for high end demand and performance, then I would go for the IMac
Your Specs for the Imac are right. However if you buy your IMac straight from Apple there are even higher specs.
              You can get:-
3.4 GHz i7 processor rather than the i5
2GB video card as opposed to a 1Gb video card.
Of course such a model will cost you more.
In the end it is needs compared with money to spend. That is only a decision you cam make.
Q2:- Will the higher cost for the Imac justify copst.
Ans:- Again it depends on what demands you intend to make on the hardware and software.
But I note you have a business and if that businees expects to high demand and high speedy performance then I suspect the Imac would be more able to provide your needs.
Again only you will know the answer to that.
    Q3:- Questions about CS6 reliability
Ans:- I have been with Adobe for way over 10 years.
Speaking, only for myself, it is the most reliable software on the market.
It is true that if you look down this form, like any other and I am thinking about the Apple discussions forum, you will find numerous instances of problems.
Again this is only my opinion, but although all these problems are real for the individuals:-
First it is not clear why they have the problem e.g. what have they done or not done.
Second, they are in the minority of the total users using the hardware / software.
The only problem I am aware of with CS6 is Acrobat X. I understand it has been sorted Adobe, however it cost me so much work I have removed it from my system and reverted to Acrobat 9
So what I am saying is that there are only two comapnies I rely 100% on: They are Adobe and Apple.
So if you are happy with my opinion I would not worry about Adobe CS6
    Qn 4:- CS6 0n 2 machines.
Ans:- Yes you will not be able to run the same program similtaneosly.
I believe, if it is important that you do run the same program together, that you can acquire a further licience from Adobe to do that.
You would need to contact Adobe about that.
    Qn 5:- Lightroom 4
Ans:- Lightroom is now available as part of Creative Cloud.
Qn 6:- Set up for individual machines
Ans:- I do not believe you do. Once you have set up your Creative Cloud account you go to the apps site and download the apps for each machine.
Each machine downloads the apps and your machine and the apps are registered by Adobe.
Here is something that you may want to know:-
Because I was so unhappy loosing all the Acrobat data with Acrobat X I ended up deleting Acrobat X
However as far as Creative Cloud is concered Acrobat X is still on my machine.
It is not a problem for me because I am happy with Acrobat 9, it fullfils my needs and has not crashed and lost me all my bookmarks.
              However here is the point:-
Adobe, when there was a problem with Acrobat X requested that no-one deletes the application.
Though I do not know for certain I believe registration of the apps you have with Creative Cloud are registered with Creative Cloud in their database. Therefore were you to delete an app, it will still be registered with Creative Cloud and you will not be able to download a further copy even though the app is no longer on your    machine.
Therefore it maybe not a good idea to delete an app when you no longer have a use for it. If you want it back I suspect you will have to contact Adobe Support
    Personal Comment:-
It is true many unfortunately have had all sorts of problems, including me with Acrobat X.
That said, Creative Cloud in my view has been a major advance in how Adobe delivers software. I have no regrets with signing up to Creative Cloud and I expect to remain with it.
Hope all of that goes some way to answering your questions.

  • New to mac, got a few questions

ok so I'm looking a buying a new macbook soon and I had a few questions.
    1. is there any difference between airport and wifi, or is it the same thing, just different names.
    2. I currently have a Linksys wrt54gs wireless router, will this work, or do I need to buy an apple made product?

    1) Airport Extreme is the marketing term that Apple gives to their Wi-Fi cards.
    2) Yes! Your Mac will work just fine with that router.
    Welcome to the light side!

  • Thinking of buying a mac mini and had a few questions. D:

I went to Best Buy a while ago, waited about an hour for help and I couldn't get anyone to help me.
haha so anyway, I want to get a mac mini. A reason is because I've never used an operating system other than windows, and all windows-based pcs that I've had start slowing down after a month; even with an anti virus program. So hopefully I won't have that problem with a different operating system.
One thing I wanted to do was to get a small 20-22 in LCD HDTV, would I be able to connect a mac mini onto one? Will it also play HD movies? The reason why I want to get a tv instead of a monitor is because I want to be able to connect a ps3 or xbox on it and play games every once in a while; unless maybe you can do the same with regular pc monitors. Would it be better to get a pc monitor instead? Which would you suggest?
    Thanks lots. :]

The smallest full HD TV is going to be 32" although it's possible there might be one or two that are 26" in size. Anything smaller is going to be 720p and may support 1080i. The other option would be to get a monitor that size as they will more then likely support up to 1080p although as already mentioned bear in mind they may be difficult if at all possible to connect to a gaming console.
Having said that they may possibly come with one or two HDMI connections. Sound will be the other issue and you will have to sort out some sort of external sound option. lastly having full HD on anything smaller then a 32" is probably pointless unless you're sitting right up close to the display.
I currently have my late 2009 Mac Mini connected to a 32" full HD Sony TV via HDMI and it works great. I don't really use it for games though as I have a PS3, 360 and a Wii for that. The Mini goes through my Onkyo surround sound amp to my TV detects it as a 1080p TV. As it's going from mini display to DVI to HDMI I use a separate external JBL 2.1 sound system connected directly to the Mini for the sound. Apparently the Mini is capable of outputting digital surround sound but I've not looked into that yet.

  • Few questions about mac pro before buying

    Hello all!
I may be buying a mac pro in a month or so and have a few questions about it.
    1. ) Any one know when Apple may release the latest mac pro? Don't wanna buy some thing that'll be significantly obsolete in a few days
    2. ) Is it possible to use SATA optical drives internally? I have a SATA blu ray drive I'd like to take from my PC, if that's possible.
    3. ) Is it possible to get a graphics cards better than the 8800 GT for video games? (For use in OS X)
    4. ) Finally, is there a significant performance difference between Apple's seemingly super expensive RAM and 3rd party RAM? (Other than the heat syncs)
    Thanks for any replies.

    1. We have no idea when Apple will release any product until it's released. This is a user-to-user site so we have no more information about future products than you do.
    2. Yes, it's possible. There are two additional SATA ports on the motherboard.
    3. The only graphic cards are those provided by Apple when you order the computer as well as the non-Apple supplied ATI HD-3870 Mac/PC card. The 8800 and 3870 have close performance specs. You can find some benchmarks at Bare Feats.
    4. There's no difference between the RAM Apple installs and what you can purchase on the open market. As long as the RAM meets the required specifications and has the requisite heat sink it will work just fine.

My newest Mac just did the same "folder of death" dance. It's too late for you now, but you might consider a passport backup drive. You can get 2&3 T-bytes now fairly reasonably priced. A given with computers is they will crash, just a question of how bad and when, so you can be prepared for the next time.
