Looking into the possibilities of network programming
Hi,
One of my client is using a database application at their retail
outlets. They have around 40 outlets located at various parts of
the country. Now they want to set up a database at their Head Office
and transfer all the data from the retail outlets to it. There are
broadband internet connections available at all the outlets but
there are chances of internet connectivity going down. The database
we are using is PostgreSql 8.0
Can this be achieved through a background process running at each
retail outlet? Sending small packets of data from retail outlet to
HO as soon as a transaction is persisited. There are Static IP
available at HO.
Can this be succesfully implimented? Has anybody done a similar
work before? Is there any other alternative? Will Java Messaging
or Network programming be helpful? Please help.

The database product ought to be able to federate itself without you having to write any application code. If not, the best solution is to chagne DB vendor to one that does.

Has anyone else found solution to Apple devices not 'seeing' each other on Home Share? I have a Macbook Air (new Nov'12) and Apple TV (new Dec'12). Software updated on both. Both are logged into the same Wifi network and the same iTunes account (I can view movies purchased from iTunes on my AppleTV). Home Sharing shows 'ON' for both devices. BUT...AppleTV shows no computers... and ... Itunes sidebar does not have a 'Shared' area at all. Help please as without this functionality, my Apple TV only provides portal to purchased (i.e. Netflix,...) content which I can get from Wii or Xbox.
I have already tried the following without success:
1. Homeshare DID work the first day after I setup Apple TV... but the next day it has not worked since then.
2. Powered off 30 sec then re-started (Apple TV & Macbook & iTunes login)
3. Checked Firewall settings per Home Sharing troubleshooting guide (correct settings)
4. Turning on Photostream in iPhoto and selecting iPhoto within iTunes and then checking to see if Photostream shows anything on AppleTV (it shows 'on' for my iTunes account but 'Zero' pictures found ... despite the >3,000 pictures showing avail in iTunes).
I also have 'Remote" app on my iPhone 4, with Home Sharing turned on (same Wifi network)... it has a very similar message as the Apple TV and same result that despite all devices having HomeShare 'on' they cannot see each other: "Remote will automatically find the iTunes libraries and Apple TVs that have Home Sharing turned on using the account xxxx (it lists my correct itunes account name)."I solved this by reset of the Wifi (unplug cable and power to both modem and wifi ... wait 60 sec ... plug in modem cable and power ... plug in wifi power and LAN to modem ... restart AppleTV and Mac ... Turn Home Share 'OFF' in iTunes then back "ON" ... it took ~60 sec for the AppleTV to pick up my Mac in computers.

My husband got a new ipad and set up his own apple id without looking into the implications of that. Now I want to sync this ipad with our itunes so we can access it on here, but our itunes has a different apple id. Any way to do this?
You should be able to accept this message, it will cause existing music, photos (not camera roll) and videos (also excluding those in camera roll) to be removed and replaced with those from this computer. All other user data on the iPad will be unaffected.

My 12" powerbook logics card crashed. I have a 17". How do I retrieve my internet bookmarks from the 12" by putting it into Target mode on the 12" and looking into the hard drive on the 12"? Where on the 12" hard drive do I go to search for them?
If the 12's logic board is trashed, I don't think you can get into FireWire Target Disk Mode. The computer has to start to get to FWTDM. Will it starte and run at all?
If it won;t start, you will have to go inside and extract the hard drive. Then get this gadget:

It allows you to connect a bare drive to another computer that has USB. It will act just like an external disk drive. Assuming the 12's drive is not damaged due to the LB failure, you can retrieve files quickly. -
Update the data into the ZTABLE fields thru program logic ..?

if you are using OO ALV, you should enable the 'SAVE' button in the main toolbar. if the user press the save button, then you should upload the data to the custom table.

I can see that on the harddisk when i look into my i pod nano see some podcast. When i look in my I pod i can't find them. What to do?
Great Troubleshooting on your own so far!. (If you got 2 PC and 2 iPod would be much easier, some of the people in this community has more than 2 of each.)
Hope you did not connect it to a USB Hub, the sync cable must be plug in directly to a USB2 port at the back of the Desktop Computer.
If you have a spare Notebook, with iTunes, connect it to the Notebook, to check if the iPod is working or hung.
Can you iPod run and play songs, when disconnected from the PC? (Sorry, for just asking the obvious)
Anyway, just hard reset your iPod, so that we can start from scratch
1. if your iPod is hung, reset it by pressing Menu and Center button for at least 10 secs till the Apple logo, comes on. (this won't delete your songs in the iPod, if they are not corrupted))
2. Connect it back to your Notebook or Desktop.
if your iPod screen is dead, try charging the battery by connecting it to another computer. if it doesn't connect to successfully to another computer, it may need servicing.

As i stated the adressbar looks very unsharp, and i tried to edit it or fix it in anyway, but nothing happens. in 3.6 and chrome it is sharp and i have no problems
Update the video display driver to the latest version.
You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox 4.0:<br />
Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: [ ] "Use hardware acceleration when available"
You can also try to set only the <b>gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled</b> pref to false on the about:config page. -
i was able to restart my ipod several times because of this problem but it doesn't really show any update in its music playlist.
Are you checking the items you want synced to the iPod?
Have yu tried resetting the iPod. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. -

say I have a table with a million rows, there are no indexes on it, and I did a
select * from t where t.id=522,000.
About 5 minutes later (while that particular (call it blockA) block is still in the database buffer cache) I do a
select * from t where t.id >400,000 and t.id < 600,000
Would Oracle still pick blockA up from the database buffer cache? if so, how? How would it know that that block is part of our query?
thanksWithout an Index, Oracle would have done a FullTableScan on the first query. The blocks would be very quickly aged out of the buffer cache as they have been retrieved for an FTS on a large table. It is unlikely that block 'A' would be in the buffer_cache after 5minutes.
However, assuming that block 'A' is still in the buffer_cache, how does Oracle know that records for the second query are in block 'A' ? It doesn't. Oracle will attempt another FullTableScan for the second query -- even if, as in the first query -- the resultset returned is only 1 row.
Now, if the table were indexed and rows were being retrieved via the Index, Oracle would use the ROWID to get the "DBA" (DataBlockAddress) and get the hash value of that DBA to identify the 'cache buffers chain' where the block is likely to be found. Oracle will make a read request if the block is not present in the expected location.
