So What is the Max Ram Support ?
Officially 16GB however OWC has advised it will support 32GB. BTW you can trust OWC, they are a reliable vendor that specializes in Macs. They test everything the either make or sell. Also they have terrific support and will ship internationally.

  • How much faster is the 2.7GHz Quad Core Intel Core i5 than the 2.7GHz Dual Core Intel Core i5?

    Hi there,
I'm considering buying either a Mac Mini (2.7GHz Dual Core Intel Core i5) or an iMac (2.7GHz Quad Core Intel Core i5). I'm just wondering what the difference in speed is between the two different chips. If both had 4GB of memory would the iMac be a lot faster than the Mac Mini? I'm a graphic designer so I'd be mostly using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
    Many thanks,
    Richard

    You mean this information:
    GRAPH LEGEND
    MP 3.3 w6 = 2010 Mac Pro 3.33GHz Hex-Core Westmere
    iMac 3.4 i7 = 2011 iMac 3.4GHz Quad-Core i7
    MBP 2.3 i7 = 2011 MacBook 2.3GHz Pro Quad-Core i7
    mini 2.7 i7 = 2011 Mac mini 2.7GHz Dual-Core i7
    MBP 2.7 i7 = 2011 MacBook Pro 2.7GHz Dual-Core i7
    MBA 1.8 i7 = 2011 MacBook Air 1.8GHz Dual-Core i7
All Macs had except the MacBook Air had at least 8GB of RAM

  • Gray screen at startup 27" 2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 ?

My one week old iMac 2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5. first started problems by not goping to sleep even when I forced it.
I shut it down using the shut off button and unplugging it from power for more than 5 munites.
I turned it back on, it does the usual startup chime and then gray screen. I have restarted twice from the shot off button and still getting the same result.
Please can someone share a solution to this?
    Thank you

Since it's brand new, contact Apple support via phone. You can read these Apple notes too:

  • What to get: 3.7GHz quad-core or 3.5GHz 6-quad-core for the Mac Pro 6,1?

I'm thinking of getting the new Mac Pro 6,1. I want to keep the price down as much as I can. I work in, FCPX 10.1, Motion 5, Premiere Pro CC, After Effects CC, Speedgrade CC and DaVinci Resolve 11 lite? Sufficient to say I do a lot of rendering. I do not work with any 4K footage, just 1080P. So does anybody have any thoughts or experience with the MP 6,1 and do you think the 3.7GHz quad-core has enough power?
    Thanks,
    -Russ

There are two ways to get the 6-core:
One is to start with the entry for the 4-core (includes D300 graphics) and customize to 6-core processor only, adds US$500.
The other is to start with the 6-core (includes D500 graphics) and starts at US$1000 more.
If you buy the 4-core today, the processor can be third-party or do-it-yourself upgraded with an off-the-shelf processor later.
I expect others would advise you to buy as much graphics power as you can afford, but I think it has a smaller and diminishing return.

My bad Eric. The startup preference recognizes the primary as a 10.8.3 startup volume but when u select it the system does not boot. I can only boot from my external backup drive

  • Compressor 3.0.5 wont use Quad core on iMac

I am compressing HD footage down to SD dvd files so that i can put them on DVDs. I have all the batches running currently on my iMac 27'' 2.8 Quad Core.
When I look at the processor usage on iStat Pro, it says that I am only using 46% of my processor power.
Currently it is taking hours and hours to complete this project. And when I tested the video on my MBP Duel Core it processed at the same speed as the iMac. Something is wrong with this picture. Do i possibly need version 3.5...?

No. looked for Clusters the other day, but figured i shouldn't waist my time if they just did what compressor does. Perhaps i should have searched deeper.

  • 2.66 Quad Core or iMac?

OK, I know this is probably a stupid question, but I want to ask it anyways...
If given the choice between the MP Quad Core 2.66 or 24" iMac 2.93 GHz for graphics work (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), which would you choose?
A no-brainer I assume, but I am actually confronted with this situation, caveat being, if I go for the MP I would need to use my current monitor (an older Sony CRT 20 incher) where with the iMac I would have the 24" LCD screen at the start. Both systems would be maxed with RAM (8gb) and the iMac would have the ATI Radeon GPU upgrade.
    Thanks in advance.

Mac Pro for sure. The first gen still has A LOT of life still left in it. Sure the iMac is new, but it just lacks upgrade ability. A key option being the adding of multiple hard drives, and fast drives, ram, etc. Working in Photoshop with large files, you probably want a dedicated scratch disk or raid 0 volume for scratch.
I just recently installed a 5th hd in my own mac pro 1st gen. utilizing the 2 extra sata ports. I fits perfectly in the lower dvd drive space.
    There's a good tut here:
    http://www.tenthousandpercent.com/?section=other&article=65
BTW, in the tutorial, you don't have to break the sata cable, or use an "L" angle one either. A regular "I" sata fits perfectly.
Also, in terms of GPU, (a good link from hatter) apparently the new Ati 4870 graphics card upgrade is also compatible with 1st gen mac pros.

  • Cleaning the quad core 27" iMAC screen

Does apple have any "official" suggestions on how to clean the 27" LCD screen?
    regards

    Have a look here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3226
My personal view--if you want to be absolutely safe, just moisten a soft cloth the next time you make hot soapy water for washing dishes by hand (before washing any of the dishes, of course). Use the cloth to spot clean any marks on your display. The important things to keep in mind are to never spray any liquids directly onto or around your computer and to always make sure the damp cloth is only slightly moistened. Wring out the cloth thoroughly before using it on your screen.

  • My 21.5" quad core i5 iMac mid 2011 with LION keeps freezing.

this has never happened before while using snow leopard, but when using lion suddenly it freezes when i was on youtube and it has frozen when i was syncing my ipod. the other bad thing about it, is the computer doesn't know that it has frozen and it wont automatically restart even though i have the setting on.
hopefully this is just teething problems since lion is a new operating system, but i'd expect more from a company like apple.
any suggestions? or maybe a patch will come out?

    hello,
I am yet to upgrade my OS to Lion but I have experienced this thing on my leopard 10.6 quiet a few times. I called the customer care support guy he gave me a solution to make the macbook run smooth without gettign freezed ( i hope it also works for the iMac ). So, what he told me to do is to drag and drop the entire caches as well as the startupitems folder ( Macintosh HD> Library ) and also the caches folder from your computer account library. restart computer then empty trash box and again restart the computer and use it but honestly bro I dont know if this will help you in OS x Lion.
Can you not restart the iMac after it is getting freezed ??

  • New Quad Core 27" i5 imac vs New Dual Core 27" i5 imac...

Even tho the Quad core 27" imac has 4 REAL cores as opposed to the Dual core 27" imac which only has 2 Real and 2 virtual(with hyperthreading)....a similarly spec'd dual core actually costs slightly more when you bump up the GPU to match the Quad's ATI RADEON 5750 with 1 GB of SDRAM.
For example with the student discount:
    1) 3.6 Ghz Intel Core i5 27" iMac with 4MB level 3 cache, 1TB HDD, 4MB RAM,hyper threading & Turbo Boost AND upgrading the GPU to the ATI RADEON 5750 costs $1,914
    2) 2.8 Ghz Intel Quad Core i5 27" with 8MB level 3 cache, 1TB HDDD 4MB RAM, (no hyper threading), has Turbo Boost and comes with ATI RADEON 5750 GPU costs $1899
Personally I'd rather have 4 REAL cores AND 8MB of level 3 cache than hyperthreading. Am I wrong? Why is the Quad core actually LESS?
I plan to do moderate HD video editing on imovie, and FCE, web design, animation using Flash and Anime Studio as well as photoshop and photography work.
Thanks for any and all feed back. I'm waiting to see if the new ilife rumors are true on August 7th before ordering, so I've got time.

It was the same with the last generation, where the top upgraded Core 2 was more expensive than the quad.
The quadcore Core i5 27" is by far the faster computer - partially because of the two extra cores, but also because of the bigger cache and the integrated memory controller. The dual is more expensive for two reasons:
    1) BTO options are always more expensive
    2) The CPU used in the top dualcore is actually more expensive than the one in the quad. The world is full of people who only look at the clockspeed, and for them Intel makes a model with the highest possible clockspeed and charges them for the nose through it. It is slower than the slowest quad on any reasonable benchmark, but it still sells.
Pick the quadcore, it's a much better computer.

  • New 27" Quad Core I5 or I7 and 64 bit Applications

I may be purchasing one at some point in the not too distant future and was wondering how exactly does the new iMacs and 10.6 work with 64 bit applications? I'm really in the dark about this, so I'm sure this sounds like a dumb question.
I run the usual Adobe apps but I also have a 3D app (Cinema 4D) that would greatly benefit from running in 64 bit. Is that something you have to switch on and off? How would you use 64 bit apps with 32 bit apps?
Thanks. Again, sorry if this is basic.
    Bob

Performance; the i7 shows as measurably faster than the i5. Take a look at the benchmarks at the following sites:

  • New Mac-quad core or 8 core for youth club studio...

    Hi there.
I have some money to kit out a studio in a youth club. I'm going the Mac route and Logic pro will be one of the programs we run. Once ive spent the cash thats it, so I'm hoping to go as powerful as possible.
    I am looking at the new Nehalem quad core and 8 core models. At first I was going to opt for the 8 core (this may seem like overkill for a youth club, but I have worked with them for some years and we finally have a chance to get some really tasty kit!), but then I read the following article that suggested on paper that the 2.66ghz quad core is actually faster than the 2.26ghz 8 core;
    http://www.macworld.com/article/139507/2009/03/macpro2009.html
I have been trying to find out if Logic Pro is a program that can make use of the extra cores. I am guessing not, but have not been able to find confirmation on this.
Question is, for longevity and a super fast machine, what would you recommend. I could get a slightly faster quad core than the base unit, but I am guessing in the future to go up to 8 core, you would need a completely new machine pretty much rather than upgradeing. I have mostly been a PC user, so these top end macs are a bit new to me.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
    Many thanks
    Smoulders

I disagree that Logic fully uses all 8 cores (16 including the hyperthreading cores). Logic seems to max out at 8 threads, and it is able to take advantage of hyperthread cores. The result of this is that while it uses 8 cores on an octo machine, it also uses 8 cores on a quad machine (4 cores plus 4 HT cores), and the difference between the two is considerably less than it should be.
Hopefully soon there will be a version of Logic that uses 16 threads and takes advantage of HT on the octo machines, but in the meantime, much of the available CPU power is going unused. An octo can max out at 1600% cpu use, but logic is lucky to make it to 400%. It can reach that same level on a quad core i7. Same goes for Logic benchmarks, the difference in actual processing power isn't much, especially if the quad is at a higher clock speed.
Anyone who has an 8 core machine can test this, there's a Processor control panel that lets you disable cores (or hyperthreading). If you disable four cores, it will just use the hyperthreading cores instead with only a minimal loss of CPU power in Logic.

  • Can iMovie 11 use quad core?

Does anyone know, if iMovie 11 can make use of all of the 4 cores on the new Macbook Pro I7 processor? I am thinking of buying either the quad core, or the dual core Macbook Pro for iMovie related work.
I asked this at the Apple store, but they were not sure.
    Thank you.

I am using a MacPro (3/2014) with 6 cores and 16GB of RAM.
Encoding a 58 minute video in SD is estimated to take 1 hr 10 minutes.
While the CPU monitor shows the "ProTranscoderToolsb" running at 460% and I'Movie at 58%, it is not clear to me whether this means that the I'Movie is using multiple cores (i.e. 5 of my 6 cores) and is multi-threaded.
Does anyone have an answer for this.
I was surprised that this render would take this long as I upgraded my old MacPro (2008 1st generation but with 4 cores) precisely for the additional rendering power.
My impression is like some others, that if I'Movie is using multi-threading, it is not using it very efficiently.  Apple needs to address this on all of its products.  It is ironic that Adobe (Photoshop 6 and CC which rip) appear to use the new MacPro's power more effectively than Apple software products.

  • Lion Server on 27" iMac quad core...

Greetings...I have a quad core 27" iMac w/8gb of Ram & 1tb hard drive that I want to install Lion server on.  From other posts, I gather this is not really a problem...but I am wondering:
Can user could be logged into the Lion server and working in their home directory while other mac users are logged into the server on their macs?  At most there would only be 3 other users logged in at the same time on the iMac server...so it is not a big network.  Also...I only plan to use the server for file/sharing home directories.
If the answer to #1 above is "Yes"...when a user logs into their account on the iMac server...would they see the "Server" apps on their dock?
Any...my goal is to have home directories on the server and users to log into the server and see their own home directoy/desk/etc from any mac on the network AND if they sign in on the imac server.
    Any direction is appreciated.

You are going to deploy network accounts (Open Directory aka OD) with network home directories (OD+AFP).
Server.app application comes with MacOSX Server, so there will be no MacOSX Clients with this application in it (unless you copy it, or share through AFP or SMB, and i don't know if that will work...).
You can (and probably should) install the "Server Admin Tools" in your MacOSX Clients.
You can install MacOSX Server in a client machine, and have the Server.app in a client machine (with a server operative system).
I remember there was also "Network Applications" and "Network Library" implementations in OSX, but i've not seen any reference since years ago...
This last two implementation allowed you this: centralized applications, and centralized preferences (now that last is done in other way).
