Looking to buy a MacBook, but I have some questions.

Hey, i'm looking to buy a Macbook for school, but I want to know if I can buy a Macbook without the hard drive or ram. I have a compatable hard drive and ram already, and my dad has a family license for Tiger.
So... can I buy a Macbook without the RAM/HD/OS? (I can't seem to find an option for that in the store).
Thanks,
MIkeB

Thanks RadE8! My dad bought a MacBook Pro, but then upgraded the HD and the RAM, so i was hoping that I could use the stuff that came with it... Ah well.
Thanks again,
MIkeB

  • Looking to buy an iPad, but I have some questions?

I see that Apple.com has some good deals on refurbished iPad 1's. I'm thinking about purchasing one because it'd be way lighter than luggin my laptop when I'm out and about, but I have a couple questions:
    1) Would I be able to have multiple "windows" (i.e. word processing, Instant Messenger, and web browser) open at the same time?
    2) How easy it it to convert documents typed up in MS Word to the iPages app, and to to switch them back to store on my laptop?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    1) I'm not really worried about split-screening. I'm typing this in my laptop, and can only see my browser window, but I have MS Word and Yahoo! IM running, as well, and can easily shift from one to the other, and would like to have the same ability on something mroe portable. :-)
    2) I checked intio the iPages app, and it does look simple, but I guess my question should be whether or not a document I type on it can be easily converted back to Word for storage on my laptop.  :-)

  • Thinking about purchasing a Macbook, but I need some questions answered

    Hey everybody,
I got a response to my Craigslist ad, so it's looking like selling my iMac G5 and buying a new Macbook might actually happen. My only problem is that I have some questions about what to do with my money. I'm not a power user, or someone who really plays games (other than my Nintendo emulators) so I already know that a Macbook is the right computer for me.
    (1) I don't have external storage, so how should I go about transferring my stuff? Buying the Macbook before selling my iMac is not an option because I just don't have that much money. I've read that some people buy the Macbook and then upgrade the HD, using the 60 Gig that comes with it as their external storage by buying a $20 case for it. I have about 50 GB taken up on my iMac, so I'm going to probably need around 100 GB at least. I know upgrading the memory doesn't, but does upgrading the HD void the warranty? Any brand recommendations for HD's? Heat and noise are very important to me. (7200 RPM is out)
    (2) I never really used the Superdrive on my iMac, but it was nice to know it was there. Is the performance difference from 1.83 to 2Ghz noticeable? I hear it's not, but I also read that under Rosetta it matters. Since Office isn't universal yet, I'd like to know. Can anyone verify this?
    (3) I read on MacOSRumors that Leopard is probably going to do some nice little graphic effects when it's released, and that the next revision of the Macbook Core Duo will probably still have integrated graphics. Since I don't plan on doing this again for at least another year, do you think the Intel graphics will be enough to keep up for a little while?
    (4) Anybody have some experience with selling a computer on Craigslist? I'm smart enough to request cash, local buyers only, and have them meet me at my house to try the computer out. Any advice on how to make sure this runs smoothly? I might end up leaving some things on the computer for the buyer. Anything that I should make sure to delete (i.e. preferences, passwords, etc.?) A checklist of what I should remember to do would really help.
I think that about covers all of it...Thanks in advance.

I sold my computer on Craigslist. No problems. I think it's only really dodgy if you are buying one from there - then you should be very careful!
I'm not sure exactly the best way to go about deleting your stuff, but you have the right idea: get rid of your preferences and passwords, and your internet history as well.
I'm not sure how to look at 'Keychain', but you might want to make sure that this is empty.
In terms of processor speed, I can't help you: I have just got the 2Ghz, but partly because not having a DVD burner isn't an option for me. As file sizes and your storage needs increase, your need for a DVD burner will probably increase as well.
Leopard is not far away now, and I would guess that Apple would make sure that their new OS will work adequately on their new computers. I would be surprised if there is much of a noticeable difference in anything but the most graphics heavy applications. Could be wrong about this, but I think that the basic GUI will perform well on any MacBook.
In terms of moving info from your iMac... the cheapest thing apart from buying the MacBook before you sell is borrowing a HD or iPod from a friend. 50G isn't THAT much info, you could always burn it to DVD-Rs in a pinch.

  • I'm going to install Arch this weekend but I have some questions

Currently I use Linux Mint on my primary PC, but I've installed Arch on my older PC at my parents house.  I like it a lot and I think I want a distro that is rolling release and also that I build myself (as opposed to installing all of the bloat on Mint).  However, I do have some questions; Linux is pretty new to me (been using it since about November) so I don't know exactly how everything works.
    1)  How do I know what packages I have to have installed for building C/C++ programs?  I know in Ubuntu install gcc/g++ by itself doesn't get the job done, you need build-essential to get all of the libraries.  Also, what packages do I need for OpenGL and SDL?  I'm a CS major and I'm in an OpenGL class so I need to be able to compile OpenGL programs; SDL is for my own purposes, but I'd still like to have it.
    2)  I use Amarok to transfer songs to my iPod.  Amarok 1.48 and libgpod 0.6.0 are in the repos and I know both of those are compatible with my 6th gen.  However, I do have a question about transferring album art.  On Mint, Amarok transfers the album art as I transfer the album, but someone told me that Amarok doesn't do that by default; there must have been a setting changed somewhere to do that.  I looked through Amarok's options and didn't see anything like that... anyone know if I can do that in Arch, and how?  There's no real information about Amarok in the wiki.
    3)  I'm going to use Gnome environment but some KDE apps (like Amarok).  Will there be any problems with that that I should know about in advance?
I'll probably have some more questions once I actually install Arch, but that will do for now   Those are the important ones.

    1) You know by seeing its dependencies on pacman or by the developer documentation. Unlike other distros, you don't need to install dev packages. Example: You have gcc and all the basic gnu tools installed, and you want to compile a program that is not in a arch linux package yet (if theres a package, you can build it using abs / makepkg and pacman will handle the dependencies) and requires, for example, a library called "xyz", you only need to download "xyz" from pacman, and all the dev stuff will come together (like header and etc).
    I hope it helps.

  • I really want to buy Apple TV but I have some concerns...little help?

I really thought Apple TV was a great idea but the more i look into it the less I like it. Can someone help me with these concerns?
1.) seems like only new releases are available to rent, I'm more interested in renting than buying and not just new releases.
2.) no tv shows are available to rent.
3.) If i buy all this stuff i have to back it up to my hd which adds to the already expensive titles.
Please tell me I'm wrong... I'm dying to buy this lol, And thanks!

Many older things are available, but as you say not all available to rent - itunes will give a good indication of what's out there.
I suspect many older titles (not all, and frankly many newer ones) won't benefit from HD and may only be in SD.
Older titles when available may also be cheaper to rent or purchase.
2.) no tv shows are available to rent.
Not currently. Maybe in the future, but no one knows for certain.
3.) If i buy all this stuff i have to back it up to my hd which adds to the already expensive titles.
Yes, you need to back up purchases if you don't want to risk losing all content in a hardware failure, but that's normal for any digital material you have that you'd hate to lose if there's no redownload option.
Please tell me I'm wrong... I'm dying to buy this lol, And thanks!

  • About to buy bose earphones, but I have a question!!!

Well im about to buy some bose on ear or in ear headphones. I know if i buy an original bose headphone it wont fit in the iphone. So i want to buy an adapter from ebay so i can connect that to the iphone and then put my bose headphones in the adapter. BUT i dont know if it will sound the same. one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/New-3-5mm-Earphone-Headset-Headphone-Adapter-for-iPhone_W0QQ itemZ140247017642QQihZ004QQcategoryZ3274QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem. Thank you

That adapter will work fine and should not affect the sound of the Bose at all. I bought a cheap adapter off eBay and plug my V-MODA earbuds in it. Sounds is excellent.
Also, you may want to check these V-MODA earbuds out. I was going to buy the Bose, but found the frequency response of these V-MODA's to be much better. You get a better seal in the ear canal also.

Using boot camp, if they will even run in Win XP, then they will run just fine on the MacBook running Windows XP.

  • I want to buy iPhone 5 but i have one question that is i have just seen a video on youtube showing laser keyboard and holographic display. is it possible in iPhone 5 and if possible then whether this function is available in iPhone 5 or not...!

    Laser keyboard and holographic display

There were some folks marketing a laser "keyboard" for computers a while ago. It is not beyond the realm of possibiity that somebody made one with a Bluetooth interface that could talk to an iPhone. It might well be beyond the average person's means to pay for it, though.

  • Thinking of upgrading to SL,But i have some Question before moving to SL

I will be glad if anybody can help me with my questions before moving to Sl.first,i like to know, after upgrading or fresh install,do i need to reinstall another windows xp on the machine, cos i use VMware Fusion?
Secondly,What option is the best,Upgrade or Fresh install?
Can i make backup using an external usb2 drive? and what can i do so my old setting remain after installing SL.Setting like my Chat history, and will my applications use the same lience key?
    Anybody with usefull advice?
What important it the history of chat i had on my pc.i work for a company as a mid man and this history help me to remember last diccussion with client..

In your place, I would move to SL if, and only if, I had an external drive with a bootable clone of my internal on it. I think that there is enough risk in going to SL that such conservatism is warranted. I would not use time machine alone for backup/restoring when moving to an OS upgrade or doing a point update. This app can be problematic and, consequently, its solo use is too risky for me in these cases. You will be able to extract your settings, files, and programs from your clone if you do an erase and install. You can erase and install or upgrade with any SL disk except the gray ones that come with specific machines. I still prefer to erase and install.
To erase and install (see upgrade option below), start up to your DVD and stop after selecting your language. Use the menus to start Disk Utility and erase your drive. Quit Disk Utility and proceed with your installation. At the end, you will be able to choose to reclaim your settings, files, and apps from the clone (plug in the external at the point of the last install restart).
If you do not like SL, then you can restore your internal using the clone. I would do all cloning and related restoration with SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner, or some other up-to-date cloning app, including Disk Utility. Your clone also will serve as an independent backup for your data.
Upgrading is a very sound process on a Mac. Still, I also would insist on having a bootable clone on an external before upgrading. An upgrade is performed by installing over your existing installation from the desktop or having started from your SL DVD. All your programs, data, and settings will be present after an upgrade, but incompatible programs will be archived.

  • Iam looking at buying a macbook

I am looking into buying a macbook and I need some help. It will be my first Apple. I am very excited but am also a single mom and watching my dollars. I was thinking about getting one on Ebay that is new in box. If I do this can I still buy the ProCare and the One to One service? Is the warranty still available to add on? I am trying to make a smart purchase but also be very cost effective. PLEASE HELP!!!

I have bought my last 3 Macs off of eBay... and you are right, it is much cheaper!
One thing i would advise is to make sure the Paypal protection care is at the $2,000.00 level and not just $200.00! If you get scammed, Paypal will only refund $200.00 if the coverage is $200.00. If the seller you are dealing with is only covered up to $200.00, then i would be very CAREFUL!!!
Buying off ebay does not prevent you from purchasing the Apple extended warranty... and if you look around you will be able to get one for around $175.00. (i bought my first Applecare for $165.00 and the second one for $145.00 but i think i really lucked out both times!)
Apple's One to One service should not be affected by where and how you purchased your laptop, so enjoy your new Macbook and welcome to our side... Oh, get a keyboard protector cos' you never know when an accident might occur and you don't want anything happen to your new MacBook! :o)

  • Clean installing Lion- have some questions.

I'm gonna clean install Lion on my macbook pro and have some questions regarding the same...
should I update to 10.7.2 and then clean install or will i have to update again anyway after a clean install?
is it true that downloading mac app store apps again from the app's page reincurrs the charges?
any best/worst practices i should consider while reinstalling Lion? I'm gonna perform a clean install.
most important... how do i initiate a clean install?!
Thanks for your time, in advance.
    Neerav

Thank you, that definitely suggests that it isn't actually doing anything useful!
I switched it off, cleared the PRAM and re-formatted the drive unencrypted (I found the option, it was in the dropdown for filesystem).
That appears to have been the issue, as the download and install immediately identified the disc name, which it wasn't doing before. Guess it was having an issue with my encrypted drive. I guess it's handy I'm not a secret agent or an political dissident I shall run unencrypted...

Hi - was looking to buy a macbook air soon but wanted to get it with lion software....anyone know when that is available and second question is what is best software for personal money management that works with lion.....use quicken now   thanks

    quicken should work with lion.
Quicken Essentials will work with Lion.  Most people that have used Quicken for a while (i.e. Quicken 2007) have found that Quicken Essentials isn't much better than a basic spreadsheet.  It is a significant step down from previous versions and does not offer many of the features previously offered.  Right now, it seems like the two most common options are iBank and MoneyDance.
Frankly... this is a major opportunity for these companies.  The largest commercial distributor of this type of product has been Intuit (Quicken).  That makes it hard for any other company to get any of that market as so many people were already using Quicken and may have had years of data stored in it.  Now, with Quicken effectively out of the picture, it's a great chance for another company.  Just imagine if iPhones were suddenly off the market.  That would give other manufacturers a tremendous opportunity since they wouldn't have to fight an up hill battle against a market giant.
