Looking to buy, but questions about wireless

I am hoping to buy a macbook very soon, but I have some questions about the wireless. I have heard that you can only use an apple router for the wireless, but already have a regular Linksys router. Is this going to be a problem?

I have been using a Linksys with Macs for two years and never had a problem.

  • Looking to Buy - but questions first

I'm looking at buying an AppleTV, primarily to play home movies that are saved on the computer (and to see pictures saved on computer).
Here's the dilemma - the computer in question is a Windows XP machine. Does AppleTV play nice with Windows XP?
I also have a MBP that shares iTunes library with the desktop PC. Will AppleTV see both computers/iTunes libraries? They should stay synced but I don't know what to expect from this kind of setup.
Do the videos that AppleTV will play have to be in iTunes, or can I have a directory full of videos instead of importing all of them to iTunes?

I don't have a windows machine so I can't answer that question. ATV will see both libraries as long as they are both under the same account.
The videos have to be in iTunes and the computer must be on to use home-sharing (streaming from computer to apple tv).
If you have an ios device (itouch, iphone, ipad) you can use that and stream directly

  • Looking to buy but have some questions

I'm currently using a Mac Mini and Frontrow, I'm hoping to replace this with the AppleTV but have a couple of questions I hope someone can help with.
    1) Can the screen saver display photos from iPhotos on the Apple TV, same
    way as a Mac does.
    2) I'm looking to export all my movies from EyeTV to the AppleTV format, all
my movies have descriptions in them and I know these are exported to the
AppleTV format. However does AppleTV show you this information when
you browse your movies, I know Front row doesn't
    3) Can you just "copy" movies to the AppleTV or do they have to be synced,
as I have a small drive on my Macbook, it would be great to just copy them
over to the AppleTV and deleted them from my Macbook.
A lot of questions I know but would really appreciate any help

    1) Can the screen saver display photos from iPhotos on the Apple TV, same
    way as a Mac does.
    Slightly differently, I'd say better.
    2) I'm looking to export all my movies from EyeTV to the AppleTV format, all
my movies have descriptions in them and I know these are exported to the
AppleTV format. However does AppleTV show you this information when
you browse your movies, I know Front row doesn't
The tv shows some fields on the tv screen, eyetv doesn't always put these descriptions where tv can best use them, however it isn't too difficult to move them around in get info.
    3) Can you just "copy" movies to the AppleTV or do they have to be synced,
as I have a small drive on my Macbook, it would be great to just copy them

No they have to be synced. You can use an external drive for your itunes library though.

  • Buying a Macbook, question about wireless internet

Hi everyone, I'm soon going to purchase a Macbook, just the $999 one. I have it for school and living in my apartment. Soon we're going to get a wireless ISP, not sure who we're going with yet. However my roommates also have laptops, not macs though. they have a toshiba and a netbook. My one roommate has a few wireless routers. I think one is Linksys, not sure what the others are. Just wondering how well my Macbook will link up to wireless routers that aren't the "airport" routers.
I just remember having trouble trying to get my iMac hooked up to wireless internet a few years back. We tried using a Linksys then. My iMac's OS is version 10.4.11, fyi. I think the real trouble was that I'm not very knowledgeable at all when it comes to networking, haha.

This. We have a Mac Mini (no wireless - connected via ethernet), an eMac (same), a MacBook (connected both wirelessly and via ethernet) and a MacBook Pro (same).
All use the same D-Link wireless router.
And when I was using the MacBook (just got the MB Pro today, so...), I never had a problem connecting to networks in airports (the kind with planes, not Airport routers, LOL), coffee shops, universities, etc..
    tl;dr: You shouldn't have a problem!

  • Question about Wireless Design and Controller

    Hi Everyone,
Although I am not new to Cisco, I have somewhat limited experience with Wireless in general.  I was hoping to get your help with the following:
We currently have a total of 8 1130AG, 4 on each floor.  They were configured a few years ago, and now we are looking to update the design a bit.  Each AP has its own SSID, and just provide internet access.  Looking at the configuration, I noticed that they are not configured to use proper channels, just random channels (9, 10, 11, instead of 1, 6, 11, etc.).  I noticed that when I roam between one AP to another, I lose about 4-8 pings before I re-establish connectivity again.
    Here are my questions:
    1.  Do I need a controller in order to use just one SSID for the whole setup instead of the 8 seprate ones we currently have?
    2.  Will the controller helps in providing seamless transition when a client roams between AP's?
    3.  Is it normal to loose connectivity roaming around?
    4.  Can I reconfigure the current setup to use just one SSID and provide better transition between AP without the use of a controller?
    5.  Which controller would you recommend?
We don't have a need to anything fancy ,I am aware that I can enable multiple SSID, VLAN's, etc.  Just trying to keep it as simple as possible, yet reliable.
    Your input is appreciate.
    Thanks

    1.  With 8 AP's only, a WLC would be nice-to-have but not necessary. You can configure WLSE and it will do some limited functions.
    2.  This depends on the signal strengths, wireless coverage and configuration.  If you enable WLSE, for instance, and you have no wireless black spots, then roaming should be no issues.
    3.  See #2.
    4.  You can configure multiple SSID (up to 16 are broadcasted) but if one AP doesn't have the SSID you use for roaming, the association will drop when the client tries to join that particular AP.  It's like mobile phone towers.  If your carrier is not in the area, you sure won't be able to use your mobile phone in that area.
    5.  For 8 1130 APs, I'd recommend the smallest of the lot:  2106 with either 6, 12 or 25 AP licenses.  I'd recommend you the 25 AP licenses.  If your finances allow you something bigger, then consider either the 4402 (25 AP licenses) or the 5508.

  • About to purchase but question about usb access to Sony DVD-RW camera

I am on the verge of purchase of a macbook and it would be my first mac at that. Specifically, I am looking for information on using the usb connection between my camera and the macbook. I am coming from the Windows world, and the camera software is windows only. I record my stuff in VR mode, and when I plug in via usb the windows software allows me to pull off the VRO files. Then I have another windows program that is able to read the VRO files and I can move them around (I don't edit the contents of the VROs), put transitions and then create a dvd. My question when moving to the macbook, can I still record in VR mode and then when done recording, without finalizing the disk, hook the usb cable to the macbook and it will be able to read those files? I read in other posts something similar but not definitive that it could not do this. There might be other software (ie, something call readDVD) that might be able to but could not determine, for sure, that it could do this over the usb (since I can't pull the 8CM disk and put it in the non-tray DVD drive). Or is there a better suggestion, please be kind that I don't know what is possible on the MAC.
For what is it worth, my scenario that I have put up with (because it gave me results that were adequate) on the windows side, had me record in VR mode and it gave me control over all the individual segments (hitting record and then stop is a segment) that I could manipulate individually with the windows software. I don't know enough about what is possible with the usb connection and the software on the MAC to know what to expect out of the box and if I have to buy additional software (to pull the movies off the video camera). If I recorded in Video mode, and then finalized and then hooked the usb cable to the macbook, would the resultant files be able to be read by iMovie? If so, would it be the individual segments or would it be one be movie (ie, all segments rolled up into a/many vob(s))? I want to be able to join many segments from many different disks onto one dvd. Maybe that is the crux of my question and may really be better suited for the iMovie forum rather than this one. If, so, please forgive my ignorance.

    Welcome to macbook forum,
Could you post your camera model / type, so we can check that out for you in order to give you better answers.
Or you can check this link for camcorder that supported on new iMovie 7.x.x.

  • Question about wireless keyboards

I have a question. On the wirelesss keyboards, are there two usb ports because on one side it looks like theres a power button, but whats on the other side? I hate wires and batteries but Im not sure what to get.

    Ha!
I've finally found an answer to someone's question on these forums! If you agree, please click the "solved" button (or whatever it is) so I can finally get a credit for answering one question.
The left and right sides of the wireless keyboard are shown on this page:
    http://www.apple.com/keyboard/
Just click the images to enlarge them. It looks to me like the one side of the keyboard has a power button and the other side has a place to insert the batteries.

  • Not sure how to ask this; iPhone 5 carrier unlocked but question about refurb iPhone 5

Ok, so. Sorry if the tittle is a bit confusing, im not really sure how to even word it myself.
The short; I had some issues with AT&T at the begining of the year so i left them and had them unlock my iPhone 5 so i could use it with T-Mobile. But now im having this issue with my iPhone 5 were the home buton is a bit unresponsive sometimes. It started as it feeling a bit loose and making a clicking sound when slightly taped. I did go to the Apple store when it first started happening and they said it wasnt a big issue, that some did this, basicaly saying "Its normal dont worry about it." I said ok and went on my way.
Now, when i had an unresponsive home button on my old iPhone 4 with AT&T all the Apple store did was give me a refurb. Ok, no issues, pop sim out of old iPhone, put in refurb iPhone, everything works fine.
But, my question is; if they give me a refurb iPhone 5, how would the whole process work seeing as i had my current iPhone 5 unlocked by AT&T vs. buying it unlocked from Apple and im using it on a different network other then what i bought for?
Sorry if its all a bit confusing, like i said, im not even sure how to word some of this.

An exchange under warranty can be a new or refurbished iPhone with no way to tell the difference. An exchange under warranty if new or refurbished is called a service unit and is provided in a plain unsealed box with the iPhone only.
Apple should have on record that your iPhone 5 is officially unlocked since the unlocking was done by Apple with iTunes after Apple was notified by AT&T that unlocking your iPhone was authorized by AT&T.
Make sure this information is on record by Apple before the iPhone is exchanged if Apple determines the iPhone needs to be exchanged under warranty.

  • Looking to buy, SSD question, and more..

    Howdy,
I have a MacBook Air (original, 3 years old or more). I love it. I have the SSD. I love it too.
I have had a few MBP's in the past with normal HD. However, I have never used a MBP with an SSD...
I am intending to buy a MBP (15" or 17") and am curious if the normal HD is loud/buzz/issue ? I am spoiled by the silence of the SSD, but the cost is a lot, so if the newer MBP's have improved HD's then maybe it will be ok..
Any one have any experience with both SSD and normal HD's on a MBP?
Also, any issues for the 17" I should know about?
    Thanks!

I had the new MBP (late 2011 and early 2011) with both original Apple HDDs and now an original SSD, and I can say that the former two (both the Hitachi 7200rpm and Toshiba 5400rpm versions) had this constant buzzing. I never heard it on my 2009 or 2007 MBPs, so it's something new... not so loud, but having an SSD now, I can say it'd be really annoying to go back to it.
I'd reccomend you buy the MBP with the HDD anyway, and then buy an SSD seperately, change it yourself, and use the HDD as an external drive (in an enclosure you can find on eBay).

  • Generally questions about Wireless connection

I have a Toshiba notebook, and it has wireless lan card. It pops up says it has found a connection, then it says to connect but when I connect and its finding the connection it pops up and asks for a network key?
    What is this?
It also comes with blue tooth.
    Any help on this please!

    Hello crazyanimal,
it seems like you are trying to connect to your neighbours wireless network.
Networks usualy are protected by a personal code (passphrase) to prevent the FREE use by unauthorized people.
If you want, you can also go and buy a wireless device for your home and start to explore the internet or your other
    computer wireless.
I am sure you will enjoy the wireless experience this way.

  • Question about wireless access

I'm thinking about buying an Airport Extreme for my dorm so my two roommates and I don't have to bother with ethernet cables. Once the base station is set up, will I have to leave my laptop connected to it in order to access the internet, or will the base station function on its own (meaning, can I set up the base station and have it stand alone as a wireless station connected to our dorm ethernet port)? Thanks.

Once you have configured the Airport base station then it will work fine and no computer needs to be left on (unlike when you share an internet connection).

  • Followup question about wireless scanning (and many thanks to PaHu)

    Hi,
Got my Canon MP980 communicating properly with my macs AND our linux machine now!
I'm having no luck using the bundled MP Navigator EX to scan documents and photos.. everything appears to be turned on and initialized correctly, the printer is on and idle on the home screen. but when I hit the scan button I see the error message:
cannot communicate with scanner. cable may be disconnected or device may be turned off. and an error code of 1.0.0
Is it possible the scanner (or this app) won't do it wirelessly? I can't use a cable without re-arranging a lot of furniture, lol.
    Best regards,
    Chris

Hello Chris. I believe the MP Navigator software should work across the network, however it may have to be configured to do so. (Personally, I don't use the application - I've never found it to be that reliable. I prefer to scan directly into Acrobat using the Create PDF > From Scanner).
I would think that in order to get Navigator working, you need to ensure that the network scanning utility is working and correctly configured. When you installed the IJ Network Tool, it should have also installed the Canon IJ Network Scan Utility. Often it will add an icon to your menubar that looks like an art-deco desk lamp. If it hasn't or you aren't sure which icon this is, you can open the application by navigating to Mac HD > Library > Printers > Canon > BJPrinter > Utilities and opening Canon IJ Network Scan Utility. This will display a pane that lets you set the MP980 as a network scanner. Once you have the MP980 you can then start scanning from an application to test.
You can use Preview, but you will need to register the scanner first via Image Capture, located in Applications. When you first open Image Capture, you may see a message stating that no image capture device is connected. To register the scanner, click on Devices > Browse Devices. This pane will show 'Canon MP980 series Network'. Click on the 'Use TWAIN UI'. Another pane will now appear asking where you want to scan the file to, what name to call it and the format to save it as. Enter/select your desired settings and click Scan. The ScanGear window should now appear letting you preview the image and select a variety of other settings. Select Preview, highlight the section of the image you want, and press Scan to finish the scan.
Once you get the above working, then you can try and get Navigator working, but as I have said, I don't think you need it unless you want to initiate the scan from the machine.

  • Question about wireless ethernet traffic

Im sniffing wireless packets and seeing something I don't understand and cannot find relevant documentation on....
In the 802.11 wireless lan management frame, tagged parameters section I am seeing a Tag number 133 which is listed as a reserved tag number, with a value that LOOKS like an SSID. But is not in fact the ssid, as broadcast-ssid is not enabled on this AP and the SSID tag field length is shorter than this piece of data.
    Can anyone help me
    1. decipher the meaning of tagged paremeter 133
    2. point me in the direction of documentation that will break out each tagged parameter and its meaning and values?
    Thx!

  • Question about Wireless Apple Pro Mouse

I am just encountering a problem with my wireless apple pro mouse. I have had this wireless mouse with my iMac G5 for 2-3 years. It was doing fine up until yesterday when I began having this problem where I would go to the bluetooth menu from the menu bar and hit "set up new bluetooth device". I would slide the cover off the LED and it would connect. At the last step of the pairing process, it would say "connection established" on the computer, then on my mouse the LED would blink one more fast blink and then die. On my computer, it said "connection lost". Is there any realy problem here? Should I just call it quits for that wireless mouse, and go and get a new one? Help would be greatly appreciated thanks!
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

If you happen to have an AppleCare extended warranty on your iMac, your mouse is also covered by that warranty.
I don't recall ever reading about a wireless mouse expiring at an early age, but you'd probably have the best idea whether or not you've gotten your money's worth out of it. I suppose you checked to see that you installed the firmware update?

  • Question about wireless security and setup.

Ok, I have a pretty long house and my router is in the garage and I want wireless access in my bedroom. Here's the deal. Coming from the wall I have cable modem plugged into a WRT54g. That feeds 5 or 6 different WIRED PC's on that side of the house, but the other side isnt wired. So 1/2 way across I have a WRE54G setup as a range extender to reach the bedroom. I just bought a WUSB11 because the pc in the bedroom has no open PCI slots, and doesnt need the speed of G so a B connection should be fine. If I turn off all security everything is ok, everybody gets connected, including the neighb's. So I turned on WEP in the router WRT54G, it generates 6 keys I setup the WRE54G from my laptop sitting right next to it, and I enabled WEP in that as well, so I enabled WEP there and entered key #2 from the list supplied by the WRT54G, key#1 went into my laptop, which connects just fine. HOWEVER in the bedroom the WUSB11 sees the network just fine, but no matter WHAT key I enter into the WUSB11 it will NOT connect in anyway. anyone have ANY ideas? I would REALLY love to have this working and I would HATE to have top turn off my security, I really dont like o tust ny neighbors. thanks j

thanks wizzard, now I had a chat going with linksys tech support and they suggested that the WEP keys in all THREE devices be the same. now I may have left out of my original message the fact that key #1 that was generated by the router, is currently being used in an ACER laptop that has a NON linksys G device, and it connects just fine. so should EVERYTHING on the wireless be using the same key? and oobviously the same transmit id (1) thanks for your help j
