Looking To Buy MediaHub NMH410 = DirecTV HR2x Settop Work ?

I'm a long time Home AV nut.....built my own HTPC, now use my DirecTV HR22 settop to take a video stream from my home PC (Windows XP Pro SP3) where it serves video, MP3s and pics/JPEGs to the TV.  However, I don't like the idea of the PCs been booted all the time and have been looking for a good Media NAS.  The issue/limitation with the HR22 settop is that it only can run MPEG2 in Transport Stream.  Thus, I convert my videos to this format no problem.
Anyway, I've been reading the 103page MediaHub manual and on page 13 it says............
"The Media Hub can stream media content to other uPnP AV-enabled (or DLNA-certified) devices, such as digital media adapter or a gaming console with a built in media player".  The DTV HR22 connects to my Home PC thru UPnP (thru Linksys WRT54G Router) but is NOT DLNA certified.  I also have concern with the comment/statement of "built in media player".  I assume since the HR22 decodes MP2/TS that this is really what is meant by the media player statement ?
As FYI....here is DTV Forum link on NAS
http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=110408

Yup, the Xstreamer is a media player, however, I don't see that it is a NAS too that can store files.....am I missing something ?  There are a bunch on the market and best one I've seen is the new one from Netgear...mostly because of the wide range of codecs it supports.
http://www.netgear.com/Products/Entertainment/DigitalMediaPlayers/EVA9100.aspx
I do have a multi-point switch in my A/V rack that routes all my A/V components/units to all TVs via Component Video.  I could put one of these Media Players in the rack and have it access and decode a general/standard NAS.  However, I wanted to avoid the $150-$250 expense of these Media Player boxes and just use a NAS that by itself is a Media Server.  My DTV DVR HD Settops are uPnP and handle streams from PCs that have WMP11 or Twonky or Tversity running on them....I have mine working thru WMP11.  However, I want my PCs shutdown so when I'm out anyone (wife) can access thru any TV (via Settop) the Media Hub/NAS.  I've been looking at the Cisco Hub since I saw it at FRYS for $389 w/1TB HDD.  Unitl then I've been looking at the NetGear READYNAS Pioneer Pro....awesome box but $1300 with no HDDs.
http://www.netgear.com/Products/Storage/ReadyNASProPE.aspx
Anyway, I've been reading up on this Cisco Media Hub and while the specs look good the reviews-comments on this Forum are really ugly....eg the RESCAN issue thread-sticky.  The link on the Twonky Media Server (www.mediahub:9000) on this and the lack of response/updates from Cisco since mid 2009 are very disturbing.  I'm sure they have great intentions but as a potential buyer I'm spooked that this box is not ready for prime-time.

  • Looking to Buy a New All-In-One Printer

I am looking to buy a new all-in-one Printer.
I have been using the Epson RX620 for a little over a year and have had great print results. Unfortunately I get a warning message yesterday that the printer needs servicing and nothing will work. After getting much less than desirable results from their Customer Support I am moving away from Epson, after three different Epson printers.
I have heard many good things about Canon printers. We will be printing bunches and bunches of photos(two small daughters + graphic artist wife = many, many photos). I am presently looking at the Canon MP600. Any goods or bads about said printer?
We do want a printer that can use cheap cartridges so HP is out of the question. Any other recommendations is appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your replies.
    Nick

The only thing that ****** me off about Epson is that they shut down their toll free phone tech support!
I had to rely on their email support to set up my new Epson printer (CD/DVD loading tray) which wasn't so bad as it was very detailed & hands on. I just couldn't understand their manual. I was having one of my "senior moment" days.
Those Canon printers are handsome! I almost ended up getting one. But, the Epson printers won because they are the only ones who can print directly on CD/DVDs & all the software is included.

If both computers were configured identically, then they would both lose the same amount of battery life with respect to the same starting configuration - comparing apple to apples. I don't know how much the added RAM, etc. would reduce battery life, but it would be less for both models.
Battery life is a tricky subject because most mfgr.s like to suggest as long a life as possible, but often do so under a set of conditions that are not common to most users. Apple is no different. Their computers do have good battery life, however. But not likely as long as what is in the ads for the typical user.

  • Looking to buy Time Capsule. What is the best way to connect printer to network?

Looking to buy a Time Capsule. I have a wifi canon printer currently. If I connect the printer to the Time Capsule via wifi will it be shared the same as if I connected the printer via USB? I would like anyone who connects to my network be able to use the printer. I want to know the best way to configure it so that is easy to connect. Thanks
    Dustin

If I connect the printer to the Time Capsule via wifi will it be shared the same as if I connected the printer via USB?
Yes, assuming that the printer is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal.

Follow the steps provided by Canon to install the printer and have it "join" the wireless network that will be provided by the Time Capsule.

  • I'm looking at buying an IPad and was wondering if it has the capacity to replace a video camera.

I'm looking at buying an IPad and was wondering if it has the capacity to replace a video camera.  I'm looking at the 128GB version and I know there are many variables.  But I'm thinking that it should hold at least 60 mintues of video before needing it to be downloaded.  Thoughts?

If you want to record good video, get a camera.
iPads can record video but they lack almost all other useful features of a dedicated camera - eg a decent lens, the ability to zoom, reasonable audio, removable media, small form factor .... and on and on.

  • Iam looking at buying a macbook

I am looking into buying a macbook and I need some help. It will be my first Apple. I am very excited but am also a single mom and watching my dollars. I was thinking about getting one on Ebay that is new in box. If I do this can I still buy the ProCare and the One to One service? Is the warranty still available to add on? I am trying to make a smart purchase but also be very cost effective. PLEASE HELP!!!

I have bought my last 3 Macs off of eBay... and you are right, it is much cheaper!
One thing i would advise is to make sure the Paypal protection care is at the $2,000.00 level and not just $200.00! If you get scammed, Paypal will only refund $200.00 if the coverage is $200.00. If the seller you are dealing with is only covered up to $200.00, then i would be very CAREFUL!!!
Buying off ebay does not prevent you from purchasing the Apple extended warranty... and if you look around you will be able to get one for around $175.00. (i bought my first Applecare for $165.00 and the second one for $145.00 but i think i really lucked out both times!)
Apple's One to One service should not be affected by where and how you purchased your laptop, so enjoy your new Macbook and welcome to our side... Oh, get a keyboard protector cos' you never know when an accident might occur and you don't want anything happen to your new MacBook! :o)

  • I am looking to buy a new iMac....help please.

I am looking to buy a new iMac, and I started a search on Craigslist for fun, and it seems as if some people have some really good deals on the model mb325ll/a. It is the 2.8 ghz version with 2 gigs of ram and a 320gb hard drive.
This is not a model sold in the Apple Retail store, so I am a little hesitant, but the guy said it is the business model. Is this true?
What kind of warranty would it come with if I am an individual user and not a business? Do I miss out on anything? Please give any advice you may have. Thanks.

There is no such thing as a "business" Mac, versus one for an individual consumers. You should look at this list, and find your model and complete specifications.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
Based on the information you provided, it sounds like this one
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.8-24-inch-alu minum-early-2008-penryn-specs.html
which is last year's (early 2008) model, not the current model (early 2009).
If it is being sold as used, the standard warranty is in effect for one year after its original sale. If it is being sold as new, the standard warranty is for one year. You can check the warranty status using the iMac's serial number.
You can also compare the price to the same iMac model on Apple's +Special Deals+ (refurb) page. It happens to be available currently as a refurb, if this is the same model.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB325LL/A?mco=MjE0NDk5Mw
Apple certified refurbished Macs have the same warranty as new. From my experience, they look and operate like new.

  • I am looking into Buying Retail a New Blackberry Q10. Doing this to avoid having to Give up my old Data Plan. Have read that when you activate a new Phone it forces you to pick a new Plan. Is this True? and How to I avoid this? 20 Year Verizon Client

I am looking into Buying Retail a New Blackberry Q10. Doing this to avoid having to Give up my old Data Plan. Have read that when you activate a new Phone it forces you to pick a new Plan. Is this True? and How to I avoid this? Any other advise in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    20 Year Plus Verizon Client

The only "unlimited" plan I can think of where this would not apply is the old Connect plan for multimedia/basic phones.  That unlimited data, on devices such as the LG Voyager, EnvTouch, and other "multimedia" devices is  not the same.
If you currently have an individual $29.99 unlimited data plan with a 3G Smartphone, then you can buy a BBQ10 retail and activate it with the same data plan and keep the unlimited.

  • Looking to buy new MacBook Pro for editing with Premiere/After Effects, but wondering about trade-off between Processor Speed and Graphics Card

I'm a professional video editor (using Premiere and After Effects) looking to buy a new MacBook Pro and am deciding between two models. The slightly older model has a 2.8GHZ i7 (3rd generation) Quad Core processor with a 1GB SDRAM of NVIDIA GE FORCE GT 650M Graphics Card. Then newer model has a 2.3GHZ i7 (4th generation) Quad Core preocessor with 2GB SDRAM of NVIDIA GE FORCE 750M/Intel Iris Pro Graphics Card.
Which makes the most difference (processor speed vs. graphics card) with editing with Premiere and After Effects?
Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    1. Your MBP will be somewhat slower than your iMac, as reflected in the general speed; desktop Macs have more RAM and storage.
You recon? If he get's the 17", he would have up to 8x more RAM, 4 x more GPU,, and  a bit faster CPU;.
    2. Be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of extra RAM. Loading up the slot will make juggling multiple applications easier, like Photoshop, VLC, and Safari. However, more than 4gigs of RAM will make loading your MBP on startup twice as slow - at least a minute, probably longer. That's why a MBP user with extra RAM should sleep their machine nearly always when not in use, rather than powering off.
I did not know this, I just upgraded from 4gb to 8gb the other day. Have not noticed it being slower, but I don't often shut it down. It's nice to not even have to bother with ifreemem.
    3. Additional storage and RAM will maximize the basic capabilities of your MBP, but you won't be able to make a 2.3ghz machine any faster than it already is.

    4. I still feel that your iMac will be faster than your prospective MBP. The only way to dramatically increase the speed would be the installation of a SSD drive (like the lauded OWC series). But they're not cheap.
I don't want to rain on your parade, but want you to get a more realistic idea of your performance.
I chose a macbook pro, 17" of cause. I use it for gaming. Yes a iMac is better for gaming. But, it's nice to be able to move around. Set up a man cave in the lounge 1 week, or in the bedroom, the next. But you fork out a lot more dosh for that luxury. And yes, not as much power as Poikkeus has said.
