Looking to buy my First iPhone.

Since I am looking to buy my first iPhone, I don't have the unlimited data plan so I would be getting the 2GB data plan. I was wondering, if your iPhone has wifi and you are surfing the web, etc. Does your internet activity still count towards your data plan or does it just run off of the wifi so you essentially are not paying for it?

The iPhone 4 is my first iPhone and I'm quite happy with it so far. I came to the iPhone from an Android device and I have to admit the OS on the iPhone is much, much better than even the non-standard firmware I used on my Android phone.
As for data usage I incorrectly assumed I would be okay with just the 200MB data plan but I got close to hitting that mark in just 10 days of the 31 day bill cycle. AT&T was nice enough to switch me over to the 2GB plan and back-date it to when my bill cycle started.
I'm sitting at about 900MB now with about 10 days to go in the cycle. I use WiFi at home 100% of the time and generally stick to 3G while away from home.

  • Looking to buy my first Mac computer product. . .

Hey there Mac support users! I'm looking to buy my first Mac computer product, and I am currently caught indecisive between the 13in and the 15 inch Macbook Pro. I have been over the technical specifications of both, and I do not really want to push out the 1700$ it would cost to buy the 15 inch if getting the 13 would be just as effective for my purposes. And of course, here is some background info on me:
I am currently a college student (hooray education pricing), and am also a musician who plays guitar, bass, some keys, and does vocals.
I will be using the Macbook for some light gaming (Diablo III with friends, maybe some other stuff later), but I am specifically wondering about which version to buy as concerns Pro Tools and audio recording -- something I plan on getting into after purchasing the Macbook.
I am aware that the 15 inch has a more powerful processor able to handle more things at once, which may come in handy while utilizing Pro Tools. In addition, I have noticed that the 15 inch Macbook version comes with two built in 3.5mm jacks on the side -- one for audio in, and the other for audio out (as compared to the standard headphone jack of the 13inch model). I am curious to know whether having the two separate jacks would be ultimately beneficial for music recording, or would it simply be better/cheaper to buy the 13 inch and get an adapter for the headphone jack?
I guess, in sum, I am just looking for some pointers in the best direction -- which would be best for a musician using Pro Tools: cheaper normal/super version of the 13 inch? Or the more expensive yet powerful 15inch model?
    Any help is greatly appreciated
    Thanks!

Hi Ziatheral, and welcome to the forums!
You've asked a lot of really good questions, and I'll do my best to be helpful.
For starters, you'll need to know that Pro Tools requires a 7200 RPM hard drive. Your standard off the shelf Mac ships with a 5200 RPM drive, so you will need to custom order a machine to meet specs.
Pro Tools is not yet officially qualified to run on Mountain Lion, although some users report it runs ok for them. It will take Avid a while to release an up-to-date version of Pro Tools.
You can NEVER have too much screen real estate. I've run Pro Tools on a 27" monitor, and even the 15" screen seems tiny by comparison. You get better graphics on the 15" monitor, too.
When recording, most artists use some kind of breakout box for mic preamping and monitoring. It's cool to think that the built in inputs and outputs will work, and in some cases they will, but that method is far from how pro recording is done. Many people like the Apogee Duet 2 for this:
    http://apogeedigital.com/products/duet2.php
Personally, I'm kind of cheap, and if you're not going to be using MIDI, I like the Mackie Blackjack. I can at least afford one of those more easily:

You have some time. It'll probably be a month or two before Pro Tools is ready to run on Mountain Lion. Keep looking. Do your homework. Don't just take somebody's word for it (including mine). And write if you have any more questions. The community is here for you.

  • Looking to buy my first MacBook Pro, advice needed

Hey all, this is my first post. I am looking to become a MacBook Pro owner for the first time. I have an iphone5 and an ipad but have decided it's time to step up. I have decided to give my ipad to my wife because she likes the more portable device and just uses it for web browsing and Facebook.
I am looking for opinions, I am currently leaning towards getting the 13" macbook with retina display. I will be using it mainly for Internet browsing. Downloading music and films. Managing them and using iTunes etc. will also be looking to stream what I download to my ps3 if that is possible. I am not a massive user in terms of I do not video editing or music editing professionally but like the idea of iPhoto and iMovie just for playing around and seeing what I can do. Could turn into a new hobby for me.
I had a windows laptop previously and it became riddled in viruses and slowed down so quickly so will not be getting one of those again. In terms of MacBooks do they generally stand the test of time? It will not be slowing down on me anytime soon will it?
My main concern is the storage. I feel my best bet is the 256gb hard drive and an external hard drive also.
Is there anything I need to consider other than what I have mentioned above before buying one having never used a mac before? Does the App Store work the same as on the iphone? Are there any really good apps to get me started?
    All advice welcomed. Thanks

Depending on your intended use, you may want to max out the RAM to 16GB. This will future proof your Mac to some extent.
Althouigh your MacBookPro won't slow down over time, OSX RAM requirements may increase with future updates.
I agree a good backup plan is essential. Time Machine for incremental backups and a cloning strategy with an offisite rotation is ideal.
You may want to consider storing Music/Video on your network, either a NAS device or USB drive attached to a router. A future purchase could be a MacMini as a Server.
As for applications, the usual office apps are available in Mac versions (MS Office being the one that comes to mind). I would start with the Apple programs and then, if you need others, come back here or search the web for reviews.
Lastly, consider whether you need to run Windows either in Bootcamp (dual boot configuration) or as a virtual machine. For example, you may have Windows software that is not available on the Mac.
Good luck and enjoy your new Mac.
    Sam.

  • Looking to Buy my first Laptop :-)

    Hi!
My Eighteenth Birthday is coming up and Im getting my first laptop! But its Kind of confusing, I have never planned on spending so much money before. So ive been researching a lot about some laptops, buts it confusing because I always get mixed reviews with every laptop I look up   So I saw this Laptop,
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9353371&st=Dell+studio&lp=2&type=product&cp=1&id=12180...
It seems pretty good, the hardware seems to be what I need (though im not an expert on video cards, so any help on how that would be cool ) But im very hesitant to buy this one because I looked at other laptops, the same ones just different colors, and they didn't have the greatest reviews. Does anybody have any opinions on this laptop?
Im looking for a computer with power and speed, were I can work and multi task with adobe software such as Photoshop and After FX, and to satisfie my inner gamer for MMO's. I would like to keep the price at $1,000 or less, but i will look at others for more.
    Thanks

    hi kalaster.
the notebook that you linked is quite the beast, but as hockey mentioned, it's probably overkill for the kinds of things you're looking to accomplish. in terms of whether the laptop is 'good' or not, read the CNET review that's linked on the product detail page. they seem to do a good a job of reviewing the machines from top to bottom.
here are three other machines that are a bit closer to the price that you mentioned.
    * asus G51VX-RX05: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9366651&type=product&id=1218092150636
    * gateway fx P-7805u: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9172511&type=product&id=1218043606827
    * hp pavillion dv7-1285dx: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9166323&type=product&id=1218041149114
all of them come with at least 4gb of system memory, intel core 2 duo processors, spacious hard drives, and discrete graphics adapters. the gateway and the hp have CNET reviews linked on their product pages, so as i mentioned for the first sytem, check those out to get a better idea of the pros and cons.

  • Looking to buy my first 'used' mac book

Came across this mac and was wondering what you thought about it...how much is it worth realistically...basically some opinions and thoughts.
Macbook Core 2 duo 2.10 GHz
    2gb ram
    250gb hd
    Mac OS X 10.7, Lion
    13"
Use, Office and game development for the iphone.

The current mac systems have alot of power. When my son went to film school/college, he had to get a PowerBook using Final Cut Pro, and it handled video editing satisfactorily.  The Intel-based systems are much more powerful (and the operating systems/programs are more complex, too).
Suggest you go back to the Apple store, and spend some time with the iMac. Unless you need the portability of the MBP, you're paying a computing dollar premium versus the iMac. Roger pointed out a good option with the MBP and display, however, it sounds like that would blow your budget.
The iMac, which I have, has alot of power in itself, and for video editing, a larger screen, vs the MBP, is very handy. I have the 21.5" screen, which works very nicely for me, however, many like the even larger screen. The added expense of a desk/chair can be managed. A desktop system can go on many flat surfaces, and you can get a desk chair for reasonable prices in the used market or see what Costco/Sams has.
For a first time user, Applecare is a good investment, just for the 3 years of phone support, not to mention the extended hardware warranty.

  • I'm looking at buying a white iPhone 4S.

I also want the white/purple iPhone 4 otterbox defender series case. Is this possible even with the sharpie trick without the headache of tech issues?

I personally own an iMac, a black macbook, and a windows Dell PC. I have used windows my entire life (20 years) and I bought my macbook in May of '06. I had quite a few problems with the Dell, including viruses, spyware, and the hardware was crap. I called their tech support and I spoke to (no offense) someone over seas who barely spoke english and i couldnt understand them and they could barely understand me, not to mention the 2 hour hold before i got to talk to a real person. What few problems i have had with my macs, I called, got through very easily, and talked to someone based out of California that easily understood me. If you are on more of a budget, if you are a student or know someone that is, you get 100 off of the macbooks, plus the apple care protection plan WHICH I RECOMMEND!!!!!!!!! Plus if you are attached to windows, you can put it on your mac using bootcamp or a program called parallels.
If you do decide to purchase any apple product, purchase the Applecare Protection Plan with it. It may seem expensive, but if anything goes wrong with your computer, they fix it no questions asked.
I had a bad battery, took it to the apple store, and they took it out and gave me a new one. That paid for the applecare itself.

  • ?questions before i buy my first iPhone...

i'm very interested in possibly purchasing iPhone
    many questions.
i need the the iPhone to do a few things and other than that its just a paper weight to me.
How loud is the iPhones's alarm clock?
Can iPhone's calendar be synced with iCal? How? (there is alarms right?)
also, i need it to make phone calls, blah blah blah,,,, and play music and some games.
but most importantly it must tether with iCal on my vintage PowerBook. will I have problems?
thanks for any answers or criticisms.

Either way it depends what you want out of a phone
1 You can not send or recieve multi-Media Messages
Couldn't care less MMS annoys the you know what out of me (it put stars there originally how quaint )
2 you can not delete individual messages You have to keep every message or Delete them all
Why would i want to? then i'd have a gap in a conversation
3 you can not forwaed a text message
Once again why would i want to? all mt SMS's are private conversations if i wanted to let someone else know the details of a message i would want to re-word it and re-send it anyway so it was coming from me
Not saying that people don't want these things obviously they do otherwise they wouldn't be contained in the 3.0 update, but i bought the iPhone knowing full well what it could and couldn't (like tethering and turn by turn i really wanted those but still wasn't enough of a deal breaker and there's a provision for them now in 3.0 anyway) doesn't mean it's a bad phone and everyone's cicumstances are different anyway.

  • Looking to purchase first iphone

my husband and i are looking to get our first iphones, so i have a few questions.
what size is good to get? I already have a 16gb touch. i think i might turn it back into the store for a discount on a ipod nano to keep all my songs on, then transfere all my apps to the new phone. good/bad idea? i only have about 20 apps on my touch. but over 1500 songs. i also have a few cartoon episodes of my son, to keep him occupid.
also, i bought my touch only a few months before the next gen came out. i felt screwed. i know there is a rumor the new iphone is coming out june 18th. i really like the chat option on it. we are miltiary and just moved to hawaii. it would be great to chat with family when ever and where ever we are due to the time difference. do they have to have a iphone to do chat or can it be any camera? also i "thought" i remember hearing that if you purchased your touch with in so many days of the new gen coming out you could return it for a new gen. could this be true for the new iphone?
    thanks.

Personally I would go with the 32GB model leaving you room for more apps, cartoons, childrens games, etc.
I sold my Touch after I bought my iPhone, you might want to consider doing the same and then buy whatever you want to replace it. Keep in mind Apple has released new iPods each September for the last 5 years and they release a new one each year. If you bought yours " a few months" before you really didn't get "screwed".
You have 14 days to return a product, less a 10% restocking fee. I would wait until Monday after the keynote speech at the WWDC to find out when the new iPhone will be available, unless you are concerned about getting an unlimited data plan, in which case you need to by before Monday.

  • First iPhone

I am hoping to buy my first iPhone soon. I am looking at the iPhone 5s (let me know any other suggestions please!) and I am wondering if anyone who has one can tell me a couple pros or cons about it. In particular, the battery life, camera quality, and what colour you have and if you'd change your mind. Thanks!

Just install iTunes on his laptop (I'm assuming it's a PC; if it's a Mac iTunes will already be there), then connect the iPhone to the laptop with the USB cable that came with it.  iTunes should do the rest automatically.  You can set up the phone to back up to iCloud and sync with the laptop over WiFi, which I would highly recommend if your father never connects his phone to the laptop.  Once this has been done he doesn't really need to connect it again.  Pretty much everything except an upgrade to iOS 6 (and who knows when that will happen) can be done over the air.

  • HT3939 Can I buy a Verizon iPhone 4 or 4s and have it unlocked to use in Africa?

I am looking to buy a Verizon iphone 4 or 4s from someone and was wondering if there is a way to unlock it to use it when we move to Africa in a couple months.

Not a 4, but a 4S can be unlocked by Verizon for use on GSM networks around the world. However, if you encounter a CDMA network (Africa has some) you will be roaming at very high prices.
Note that you must have a contract with Verizon before they will unlock it.

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.

  • HT201371 More Apple id's with the same Touch ID possible? I have two Apple ID's, one for buying apps since the first iPhone and later, one for iCloud. Now with my new iPhone 5s, after installation Touch ID is connected to the iCloud one.

I have 2 Apple ID"s, one for buying app's (since the first iPhone) in the store and another one for operating with iCloud things. Now, after installation/activation of my new iPhone 5s, the Touch ID is connected to the iCloud world. Conclusion, if I like to buy a new app. I still have to fill in the password for the other Apple ID. In the past I asked Apple to may join both, but that seems to be impossible.
    Anyone a solution?

I am logged into the same things on both my iPhone and my MacBook Pro, except for mail. I use a gmail IMAP account and everything there already works on both machines. The iCloud account on my iPhone uses one Apple ID and the one on the Mac uses the second Apple ID.
