Looking to buy new desktop, need advice

Hey folks, it's been about 6 years since I bought a laptop (HP) and I am starting to get into photography a whole lot more.  I specifically love Lightroom 4 and have been using the 30 day free trial.  However, it is dog slow when uploading files, I don't have much available hard drive space on the laptop.  I have been looking for a desktop, but I want to make sure it will be sufficient for Lightroom 4.  I don't really see myself getting into video editing, maybe I would upgrade to Photoshop some day.  Otherwise it's mostly Office programs and internet, I'm not a gamer either if that helps.
I am not really interested in Windows 8 right now, and I see I can get machines with Windows 7 still
I would prefer a name brand like HP, but am open to suggestions
Budget for desktop, less monitor $650ish
My concerns about what is required for Lightroom 4:
Processor
Memory
Graphics Card
As a reference here is a machine I have been looking at:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883157354
Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated, I don't want to waste money on something that isn't going to be capable.
Kenneth

Since this hardware sub-forum is part of the Premiere video editing forums, you may not get many replies about a non-video computer
For static pictures, what you linked should work OK
My wife doesn't do video editing, but she does a lot of pictures (Photoshop Elements) and she is currently designing our next house with a CAD program... and the computer I built for her this past November is 'wicked fast' for the work she does http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/ADOBE.HTM

  • Looking to buy new monitors - any advice?

I am looking for advice on purhchasing new LCD monitors. I have about £1200 ($1750) for either two monitors (20inch) or one big one (30inch) I want to be able to use the same monitor/s to edit on and for full screen playback of sequences.
I will mainly be working with XDCAM HD EX and DvcPro HD so I would like a monitor that can work nicely with that resolution and also be able to do some grading on. I know a grade1 CRT is the best option for this, but my pockets arn't that deep sadly.
I'm not too technical so I would like to know what I should look for in terms of response time, contrast range and resolution, also are Look Up Tables something I should be looking out for? I find my current googling to be confusing, but so far I have narrowed it down to a few manufacturers. EIZO, NEC and DELL.
Does anyone have experience of these monitors or other recommendations?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Keith.

On the other hand I used 2 monitors for years . . literally going back to my IIfx days.
However I recently had the opportunity to try out a system with a single 30 and was impressed enough with it for ease of use that I have since switched over to a single monitor set up. I also reasoned that if I ever need more screen real estate I could add another monitor back into the setup. Personally I think the Apple 30 inch is the best of the bunch in your price range.
So there you are I have added to the indecision !
As far as monitoring goes, sure we'd all go out and buy top of the line broadcast kit if our budgets allowed. I did as many do now used to use a good quality CRT TV until I could afford to go pro . . yes there will be lots of head shaking from some ADG members but you will at least have a guide as to how your finished product will look with regards to overscan and TV colour palette.

  • Looking for a new desktop

As most of us know, World of Warcraft is getting better graphics in the upcoming expansion. I'm worried that my desktop now (which can barely play the newest expansion) won't be able to play the upcoming expansion, thus I am looking for a new desktop. Not an amazing one, but just a good one with nice RAM, and a good processor. I'm looking around EVERYWHERE to find the best prices on desktops, and I was hoping some of you could make some reccomendations to me on to what desktop I should buy?
    I want a low-medium priced desktop (200-1000$)
I want that desktop to be able to play World of Warcraft (and the upcoming expansion) well
I want at least 4G of RAM
I want at least a speed of 2GHz speed of the processor
These are the specs of the current expansion :
    PC System Requirements
OS: Windows XP (Service Pack 3), Windows Vista (Service Pack 1)
    Processor:
Minimum: Intel Pentium 4 1.3 GHz or AMD Athlon XP 1500+
Recommended: Dual-core processor, such as the Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 X2
    Memory:
Minimum: 512 MB RAM (1GB for Vista users)
Recommended: 1 GB RAM (2 GB for Vista users)
    Video:
Minimum: 3D graphics processor with Hardware Transform and Lighting with 32 MB VRAM
Such as an ATI Radeon 7200 or NVIDIA GeForce 2 class card or better
Recommended: 3D graphics processor with Vertex and Pixel Shader capability with 128 MB VRAM
Such as an ATI Radeon X1600 or NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT class card or better
Sound: DirectX-compatible sound card or motherboard sound capability
These will increase however, so I hope I've given enough information for people who might be able to help me!

BUT. If you don't know what you're doing/aren't tech/hardware savvy. I don't recommend doing it.
I agree.  If you don't already know where to find parts at good prices (BB sometimes has good deals but rarely on individual parts.  In some cases their RAM prices are more than 3-4 times the price of other reputable sources of RAM.), you probably don't want to assemble a machine.  (Note:  You might have a friend who is comfortable with such things that can help you.)
I get my individual parts from the same place RealGeorgeW does.

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.

  • Looking to buy new MacBook Pro for editing with Premiere/After Effects, but wondering about trade-off between Processor Speed and Graphics Card

I'm a professional video editor (using Premiere and After Effects) looking to buy a new MacBook Pro and am deciding between two models. The slightly older model has a 2.8GHZ i7 (3rd generation) Quad Core processor with a 1GB SDRAM of NVIDIA GE FORCE GT 650M Graphics Card. Then newer model has a 2.3GHZ i7 (4th generation) Quad Core preocessor with 2GB SDRAM of NVIDIA GE FORCE 750M/Intel Iris Pro Graphics Card.
Which makes the most difference (processor speed vs. graphics card) with editing with Premiere and After Effects?
Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    1. Your MBP will be somewhat slower than your iMac, as reflected in the general speed; desktop Macs have more RAM and storage.
You recon? If he get's the 17", he would have up to 8x more RAM, 4 x more GPU,, and  a bit faster CPU;.
    2. Be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of extra RAM. Loading up the slot will make juggling multiple applications easier, like Photoshop, VLC, and Safari. However, more than 4gigs of RAM will make loading your MBP on startup twice as slow - at least a minute, probably longer. That's why a MBP user with extra RAM should sleep their machine nearly always when not in use, rather than powering off.
I did not know this, I just upgraded from 4gb to 8gb the other day. Have not noticed it being slower, but I don't often shut it down. It's nice to not even have to bother with ifreemem.
    3. Additional storage and RAM will maximize the basic capabilities of your MBP, but you won't be able to make a 2.3ghz machine any faster than it already is.
    SSD
    4. I still feel that your iMac will be faster than your prospective MBP. The only way to dramatically increase the speed would be the installation of a SSD drive (like the lauded OWC series). But they're not cheap.
I don't want to rain on your parade, but want you to get a more realistic idea of your performance.
I chose a macbook pro, 17" of cause. I use it for gaming. Yes a iMac is better for gaming. But, it's nice to be able to move around. Set up a man cave in the lounge 1 week, or in the bedroom, the next. But you fork out a lot more dosh for that luxury. And yes, not as much power as Poikkeus has said.

  • MacBook Pro/iPhone 4S user looking to buy NEW iPad - what size?

I know, I know....this get's asked a zillion times, and many of the answers are the same - "Depends on what you want to do", etc.  However, none of what I searched seem to answer MY question, so here goes:
I am looking to buy a new iPad before the end of this week for business purposes mainly.  Particularly so I don't have to travel with my MacBook Pro.  I also currently have an iPhone 4S.  It's a 32GB model and has a little over 10GB of free space.  I have an extensive photo (11,000 pictures) and good size music collection (40GB) as well, but as you can tell by the phone usage, I'm not one to carry everything with me.  Now, here's where I haven't found an answer to my questions.....since I use iCloud for photos and music (with iTunes Match) as well as starting to use it (along with Dropbox and Evernote) for documents, why would I want anything more than a 16GB (or possibly 32GB) iPad?  This leads to another question, would I be wiser to buy the 64GB iPad, then when upgrading to the new iPhone (5 or new or whatever they will call it), get a smaller capacity version of that?  I'm only looking for a wi-fi iPad, as I can use my iPhone as a personal hotspot.
Thanks very much for any input.

As you have suggested yourself, there really isn't a correct answer to the question other than "what would serve your needs".
If you are using cloud services, and iTunes match, you could very well get by with a 16gb. However, you might want to consider how much time you might spend when getting online would be difficult (in the air traveling for example), and what you would want available during those times. My original iPad was a 16GB, and it served me well, but I did opt for 32GB when I upgraded to the New iPad. I don't regret the decision since it gives me more flexibility. BTW, I do use cloud services, including iTunes Match (currently just shy of 17,000 tracks loaded), extensively.

  • Advice - looking to buy new router

Hi - Just looking for some advice as I'm wanting to upgrade my router.  I'm looking for a router which can handle setting my devices with a static IP and then allocating a specific DNS setting.  I have two different DNS settings,  one I need to be restricted to a Roku 3 and others which I'd like set to a default DNS serve.  I have a cable modem which would be bridged to the router, and running a windows 7 pc.  Hopefully I've give you enough details.
    Thank you in advance

I think you will find this impossible on any router that is less than enterprise level.. and Bob's comment might be slightly tongue in check.. Cisco is enterprise level with a degree required to drive it.
You can in fact use an apple router.. but you need a main router plus the apple router. This is a very neato setup.. as I do the same thing.. run a roku 3 and avoid imperial entanglements. You are not using the apple router in router mode.. you are using it as a secondary dhcp server. And it is the only router so far I have found that is able to do it.
The basic method for setting up the Airport is here.
Re: airport time capsule keeps disconnecting
You will notice the unblockus DNS if you look closely.
You have another problem.. you must block google dns.. this has to be done on the main router unless you are prepared to do some really major mods to the apple router.
Email me direct if you like.. it is available in the profile.

  • Looking for a new laptop, need help!?!

I am searching for a new laptop to use in college and i am planning to spend $900 to $1000 on it and would like a laptop that is not too big (like equal to or under 16".) I would like at least 500GB hard drive and processor that is good but not to strong that I have no battery life. I was thinking i5 processor.  I would like it to have enough battery to be able to use through good chunk of day (like 6hr rated or so.)  It needs to be somewhat durable as I know college will take its toll on the computer.  It would be great addition to have a good video card.  I don't know if there is anything out there like this but hope there is.  Please post suggestions or new ideas about what i would need for college.  Thank you for any help!
    Luke

    Hi Lukedmann,
Thank you for considering Best Buy for the purchase of your next laptop. As we start off the Back to School season you should start seeing the introduction of quite a few new models,  and some that should be able to meet your need. With the way technology advances day to day, this shouldn't be impossible to maintain.
Personally, taking into account any and all biases I have and stuff, theres 4 models i'd point out to you inside my store. Understanding that these are not your only options, and that I think that the aethetic design of the computer (how nice you think it looks) should definitely play a role, i'm sure any of these should be able to meet the demands you specified.
    3 Models to Compare
Overall these are pretty close to your price limit, and I chose these assuming you wish to spend 900-1000 on the laptop and already counted in taxes, accessories, softwares etc. Just to let you know I discounted some models to give you the higher quality, however some models which come out to cost less would still meet your specified criteria. Let us know if you have any questions.
    Sincerely,
    Agent Lamar

  • Overly Excited New User Needs Advice on Windows for Mac

As of Christmas day, I am a proud owner of a new MBP 17" beautiful piece of machinery! I'm coming from a PC so you can imagine my excitement when I opened this gift from my parents. Also, I'm 33 years old so getting a gift this amazing from your parents is pretty huge!
Anyway, the point is I have to use a program for work that is only available for Windows and I just need some advice on whether to use Parallels or VM or just use the free boot camp. I don't want to use Windows for anything other than this program. Is there a way around having to buy the whole Windows OS? Also, is iWork any better than Office? Not sure which of those to buy either. I hate that I even have to have Windows on my new Mac! Thanks for any advice.

Hi eightezsteps, welcome to Apple Discussions!
What program do you need? Often PC programs have equivalents on the Mac platform, or even Mac versions that many people are not aware of. There are very few file formats that Macs cannot deal with.
The choice of Parallels, VMWare, or Boot Camp will also depend on whether you require 3D graphics support with that application. So, we'll need to know what it is!
is iWork any better than Office?
I prefer it to Office now after using it for a year. However, it is different, and there is a slight learning curve to it. Once you discover the differences from Office, you'll be as productive if not moreso. You should be aware that some of the more advanced features of Office are sometimes not included in iWork though. So if you require advanced formulas and macros in Excel (for example) to be cross-platform compatible then you'll need Office. If your work is slightly less hardcore than that, you'll be just fine with iWork once you get used to it.
I do some pretty extensive academic writing (scientific) using Pages and Numbers and I have never ran into anything it could not do for me. That includes formulae and scientific notation.

  • Looking to buy new laptop?

I am in the market for a new laptop. Something I can use to surf the web, iTunes for music, nothing crazy, but still want something with a fast processor and decent graphics. Which models should I take a look at? Thanks

    Hi motherof4kids,
That is a good question and there is a lot to consider.  A lot of laptops should be able to help with your standard kind of school work (unless you are going to school for video editing, which you might need something more powerful) and also download music.  When it comes to gaming, a good video card, memory and processor are probably the top things I look for.  It also depends on how much you are looking to spend on your laptop.
League of Legends doesn't require a whole of graphics, however World of Warcraft can, depending if you want to run on Ultra or not.  Without knowing exactly how much you are looking to spend, something I can recommend is to check out BestBuy.com and type in "laptop".  When looking all "all laptops" you can narrow your search in the left hand column to specifications you'll need.
You can put your price range in there and then compare the specifications to WoW (since that will be the most resource heavy application you are looking to run).  WoW requires a 1.3GHz process, 2 GB's of memory and a 32MB video card.  More than this will certainly help the performance of your game.
I hope that this helps and gives some guidance and let me know if you have any questions.

  • Moving all FCP content to a new drive, need advice!

Well, I just ran out of space on my FCP scratch/capture/content drive, an external 300gig. So I got this snazzy 1tb drive that is bootable and empty. What to do? How do I copy all the FCP content to the new drive, and what implications does have to all my FCP Studio projects that exist on my internal drive? Am I going to have to relink everything...and more importantly, is there a chance of messing up my projects here?
I was hoping to just somehow clone the volume on the old drive to the new, and blow away the old drive for other uses (TM) and fake out the OS to think nothing has changed. But when I looked in drive genius under duplicate volume, it warns me it will delete EVERYTHING on the target drive. Arg, no good. And in CCC it warns me it will make the target non-bootable. Double Arg. So what to do?
    thx
    coocoo
ps. I started a somewhat related thread here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8405889#8405889
as most of my aperture content is also on this FCP content drive and I need to move that too!
    Message was edited by: coocooforcocoapuffs

Arg, I did that, just a simple copy to the new drive and some of the assets where found and some not so i had to use that dialog "reconnect media" which must be the most confusing dialog in all of Leopard, and managed to reconnect everything in this very large project in process (heaven help me if I ever have to go back to the others), but now the problem is there are many things that are unrendered. Mostly the Motion imbeds. But in the System settings FCP figured out to just change the drive name to all the cache definitions, so not sure what to do about that except re-render all the timelines. Well, I knew it was not going to be easy!

  • My new worktstation - need advice

    Hi folks,
This has probably been asked a million times. Sorry and thanks in advance for your answers.
I'm going to build a workstation for Premiere, After Efects.  I still use Combustion (I know, I know...) a LOT !
During a time period I will also use it for audio with NUENDO and/or Audition CC.
I will get a Matrox MXO2 with MAX option  for Input/Output.
My major concern/doubts are on the Processor / Motherboard / GPU.
I believe I've droped the HP Z620 with 2 XEON. It's to expensive.
Probably better but the times are difficult and I heve a budget with some limit.
So I will go for a i7 based system.
    Some doubts:
    - I should get a 4770K or a 3790 or what ?
Does the 4770K deserves the extra price - seems that it's not that faster.
    - what MB do you advice  -  I need that it comes with a 1394a for capturing from my Sony Z1 camera.
I will start with 32G RAM but the option to upgrade to 64 later is almost mandatory.
    - NVIDIA Quadro is out of my range.
GTX 780  vs  TITAN.    Any opinion?
I've read that Premiere CC will manage 2 GPU. Is this correct?
In this case I can later add a second 780 or TITAN.
    Last, but not the least.
I will edit, mainly HDV and DSLR files.  No 4K soon (I think).
I use intense ColorCorrection on every plan.
I work most of the times in films with 40 to 90 minutes.
I feel I should buy the best I can now.
A less powerfull workstation will notice for sure, on CC2 or CC3.     Yes, time flies...
    Any input is welcome.
    Sincerely,
    Carlos

    Thanks Eric.
That limitation on the 4770K (Hasswell) is now clear for me.
On the Intel website, the i7 Extreme Processors list, the 3930K is not present. It's a 2nd Generation.
Should I opt for it of for a 4th Generation ?
On the audio side I will check with Steinberg.
The Matrox MXO2 has 5.1 audio monitoring. I will check if it works with NUENDO. With Audition CC it should work for sure.

  • Very slow new T510i, need advice.

Hi All, I have a new T510i, which I have been using for about a month.
    Its a i5 M 430 @ 2.27GHz with 2.00 GB of installed RAM
I'm running Windows 7 Professional 32 Bit with Zone Alarm Anti virus.
My previous laptop was a Dell Latitude which was 5 years old. The motherboard developed a fault, hence the new Thinkpad.
I use the computer for Microsoft Outlook 2003 and for AutoCAD Architecture 2010.
The computer is unbelievably slow and I do not know why.
With just Outlook running, in the Task Manager it shows
    114 processes
    less than 15% CPU Usage
    70% + Physical Memory
If I open AutoCAD then I'm up at 80-90% Physical Memory.
When opening two AutoCAD drawings I have seen acad.exe running at 900,000 K Memory (Private Working Set)
My old Dell ran Outlook 2003 and AutoCAD 2008 without too many problems.
What should I do? Will sticking another 2 GB of RAM solve all my problems
I have to live with this computer for 3+ years, so things are not looking good.
Side issue, the in built microphones next to the screen packed up less than a week after receiving the Thinkpad.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Lead_org,
    Thanks for your help.
    Thinkpad has
Graphics Processor / Vendor Intel HD Graphics Dynamic Video Memory Technology 5.0, which I think is onboard?
The AutoCAD I generally do is 2D, not very complex. I'm a Structural Engineer!!
Just is case this is relevant, when accessing the office network, the computer takes quite a few moments thinking what folders and files are available on the server.
Changing the thinkpad to the W500 is not an option as the Lenovo reseller is unlikely to refund me the cost of this one
    Kind regards
