Looking to cut cable costs - drop extra phone line...

Is it possible to use Nokia 920 mobile phone as connected phone line connectoin for a standard fax machine at home?  Have Ricoh Aficio MP-C2000 commerical copier at home that has great fax machine setup.  Would like to drop current dedicated comcast phone line if possible to just plug in nokia 920 mobile phone to phone jack on existing copier for the one off fax send or receive capability I would like to retain.  Much like tethering with my laptop I would love to use the 920 to send/receive faxes from standard fax machine.  If possible would think I would need to source a cable for hookup...
Have never used this forum before so not even sure how to check for responses... yes I am a nubie but love this phone!

  • Cost of replacing phone line?

I would like to know the cost for BT openreach to replace my phone line up to the Master socket, Not that theres any problem with it. I am with BT Broadband as well. I think my speeds could be slightly better aswell. This might improve it slightly.
The phone line is over 20+ years and what is the average life expectancy of phone lines if they ever do degrade which they must.
How do I go about it, who to contact.
    Thankyou in advance.

By "Phone line", I assume you mean the span of wiring from the pole.
Have a look at the price list at :
    http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/current/Misc_boo/1393_d0e1.htm
As far as I can see, there is a fixed price of £127.99. If you want this done, call the BT sales number and ask for an "External wiring shift". This is quite common, where building work requires the diversion or replacement of the wiring. I'm sure BT will be happy to take your money.
That said, I don't think you'll see any benefits.  There is plenty wiring out there which is much older than 20 years, and it works fine. Shiny new wiring won't improve your ADSL connection speed, unless there is actually a fault on the line already.

  • Cost of new phone line for BT Basic customers

I have ordered a new phone line for my 92 year old mother who is moving sheltered housing flats.  She will be charged £130 for the new line because a) there is not an existing line to take over and b) she is a BT Basic customer.  These customers are discriminated against as they are on low income and seem to be the only type of customer that is charged this fee.  Also because it  is just a phone line ie no broadband etc she will be 10 days with no phone and her mobile does not work inside her new flat.  She is a very vulnerable person and again seems to be discriminated against. Any one got any ideas?

HI the 130.00 charge is made by Openreach for the work to install a new line this charge is made to all customers that need a new line installing for the first time there is no discrimination because you are a BT basic customer like wise the time scale is also the same for all customers it depends on the availability of an engineer to carry out the work

  • Inexpensive way to add a phone line to my iMac?

    Hi,
I have a Google Voice account now, which I have set to ring my iPhone when someone calls my GV number. However, for convenience, I would like to add an additional (inexpensive) phone line for the same purpose. This phone would stay by my iMac, freeing me to carry the iPhone with me.
I read about Magic Jack, which has a USB connection and provides a new phone number, but I'm not sure how well it works with OSX (it seems most of these USB products are Windows-based). I've also read about Skype, but it seems that this would be overkill for my situation (just an additional phone number for convenience). Adding a second phone line through Verizon is not an option due to the monthly cost. I'm sure there are other solutions out there (like ooma), but I would like to keep the costs down.
Does anyone have a recommendation for adding an inexpensive additional phone number (via USB preferably) to an iMac? I have Parallels, but I don't want to run a Windows VM full-time just to support an extra phone line.
    Thanks.
    Michael

    Gee, thanks.

  • Phone line not working but Infinity is Fine

We had a huge thunderstorm last Monday, which caused a power cut.
Since then, our phone line is dead (it just makes a clicking noise), although if you ring our number, it appears to be ringing (which it isn't).
However, BT Infinity is working even faster.
I did the on-line check of our service and it says there is no fault, and so if I call out a BT engineer, it could cost me £130!!
I'm sure it isn't working, as I've tried an old cordless phone (which I haven't used for years) and I still get the clicking.
I've read that one of the wires may be dead, but I don't know what course of action to take.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have checked our telephones in the test socket, and they work fine, but not through the normal socket!!
Then there is a fault in that socket, which Openreach will charge to replace. They go faulty quite often, but you can replace them yourself.
You can get around the problem by plugging a microfilter into the test socket, and then plugging the phone and broadband into the microfilter.

  • Equium A60-191: Modem issue - Only analog phone lines are supported

My Equium A60 was powered up when lightning struck nearby and caused the electricity supply to go off and back on.
The OS is XP Home and my ISP is AOL. When I try to access the Net by DUN, I receive the repeated error message:
"Connected phone line is not compatible with this modem. Only analog phone lines are supported."
My desktop computer, which also uses AOL, still connects to the same phone line without any problem.
I have rebooted the A60 several times; changed and tried out 2 phone connnection cables - both work; the phone line works fine; I have reinstalled the driver provided on this site; removed the tick from the box that says to wait for the dial phone; checked out that the modem is in working and on the Device Manager list. All of this is to no avail.
Troubleshooter is suggesting that COM 3 is not enabled. I cannot see COM 3 listed in Device Manager, under Ports.
I have tried Google and ASK with the error message. There are not many posts and it appears that the Toshiba modem is in fact an Agere. This makes seems to be the subject of some of the complaints.
Finally I have uninstalled the driver/modem, AOL and one other DUN connection. I rebooted and went through the process of installing "New Hardware" and AOL. Whilst the modem is enabled and allegedly working... I am still unable to connect to the Net. I reinstalled an additional 'pay as you go' ISP. When I try to dial out on that it generates the error 680. It does this even when the box is unchecked, for wait for a dial tone.
I would be most grateful if anybody could help. I have run out of ideas.
    Many thanks.

    Hi
You are right, the modem support the Agere Modem Chip.
You will not find the COM3 in the device manager because the modem uses not real com port. Its a virtual com port.
I think you should start the diagnostic tool test and check if the Modem has no malfunction.
Additional you should delete the connection in the Region Select Utility and after new reboot create a new one.
I found also the useful Microsoft article about the Troubleshooting network and dial-up connections.

  • Broadband drops out & noisy phone lines.

    Hi,
Not sure whether this needs to be posted here or in the phone section as both areas are effected.
My property is pretty old and the internal phone sockets/wiring is also quite dated. I've always had issues with my phone lines being very noisy to the point where i have simply done away with having a house phone (not ideal).
I use my internet for many hours every day - its an essential part of my life and income. I had a new internal socket fitted about 2 or 3 years back exclusively for my internet use to help improve the connection which had been fine until recently.
I had new windows fitted which required the socket to be moved & ever since then my connection has been unreliable and drops out.
Ive reported the fault on the line earlier today and am waiting to hear back off BT but thought i'd post here in the mean time.
I use a Belkin router and have spoken to them but they were unable to help. After running a few tests they said it was most likel a phone line fault. I have also tried a different router and experienced exactly the same issues.
How do i go about identifying the fault & getting it fixed? With it likely being an internal fault, is it likely to cost me money? What are the terms & conditions with this type of problem?
Also, how would i go about getting new sockets installed in my house so i could get a working house phone? How much is this likely to cost?
    Thanks for any advice.

was the new socket you had fitted like this    if so any extension sockets in your home should be connected to the back of the bottom half of the socket NTE5.  It may be that moving the socket has moved some of the wires and they are loose.
BT are responsible for the wiring up to the first socket in your where the cable comes in from outside.  if the problem is found to be your internal wiring after the master socket then you will be charged at least £130

  • Cut neighbours phone line

    Hi
I have just had new fascia boards fitted.
On the boards was an old cable which looked about 40 years old.
After speaking to my neighbour who has lived here for about this time he said it was an old ntl line, which he  also had on his fascia and my other neighbours. He said it was now disused and could be cut down.
So I cut I all down on my property and one of my neighbours.
Our other neighbour then came out saying her phone line was not working and the cable was the phone line.
She said she was going to to call BT to repair it at £114 per hour to repair.
She is an elderly lady who also has a police line connected for safety.
I cannot afford to pay for this repair to be carried out.
She called them out today and they said we had a very old shared line, each house these days is normally single served by BT. This means they have now got to dig the pathway up and install a single line to her property. They are not sure if she will be charged.
Surely if there is an old setup in place and this now needs updating to the current methods of installation this should be done by BT?
    Can anyone advise?

Yes but this was a genuine mistake, we thought it was an old ntl line. If we knew it was a bt line then we would have left it alone. I cannot afford to pay thousands of pounds for the path to be dug up a d neither can my elderly neighbour.
You may be able to make a claim on your household insurance, if it was an accident.
Its not unusual for a number of properties to be served by a multi-pair cable terminated on a distribution block.

  • HT4528 dropped my phone in snow for a less than 5 sec, and now stuck on headphone mode. Currently have it in a bag with rice... any other suggestions'

I dropped my phone in snow for a few sec, and now I am stuck in headphones mode. Has anyone had success getting this fixed?

Snow = water ... water is the best "bad" thing for an iPhone because it evaporates and leaves little or nothing behind.
Keep it in rice for about a week to be safe.
If you have AppleCarePlus (not just AppleCare) you can pay $50 to get a new one if the rice does not work.  Else you will pay about 50% of the iPhone cost for an "out of warranty" replacement.

  • I dropped my phone in the water!!!!!!

Please help me I dropped my phone in the water.

Hobby Stores have a product called silica something used to dry flowers.  It looks like salt but is not!  What I bought came in a carton looking like a 1qt milk carton.  First: with battery out and the phone open, wrap it in a paper towel and tape just to hold it in place.  The tiny beads will get into buttons, etc if you don't cover it.  Then put the still open but wrapped phone in a small mixing type bowl large enough to cover the phone with an inch or two of the beads.  Then pour the beads in along the side of the phone trying not to hit it and fill it at least 1" (more is better) over the phone.  Set it on a shelf somewhere and let it sit for 3 days.  When you take it out be careful not to tear the paper towel.  You do not want to get beads inside your phone.
    Hope this works for you.

  • I dropped my phone in a toilet, the sound and vibrate are working but the screen will not turn on, what should I do?

I dropped my phone in a toilet, the sound and vibrate are working but the screen will not turn on, what should I do? do I just need a new screen or what? I'm freaking out here

Don't freak out, just get over it. It's probably done.
What should I do if I drop my phone in the toilet?
Apple may offer you an refurbished iPhone in exchange for yours, for about half the cost of a new one.
I wouldn't be too specific about just how it got wet

  • I dropped my phone, internal screen issues

So I dropped my phone, and now when I start it up, the apple icon shows up just fine for about 10 seconds, then slowly fades to black, then the screen is lit up, but black, and nothing will show up. Tried restarting it multiple times, is not resolving. Is there any way to fix this issue? If i replace the screen (the screen is cracked), will it be fixed, or is it internally broken beyond repair? Thank you!

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. You will most likely be offered an out-of-warranty replacement (about half the cost of a new phone).
