Looking to do an effect in FCP 4.5 but dont know if poss

Hi,
I'm doing an abstract art video edit & am using non-additive dissolves a lot but looking to go further.
Is there a way to mix 2 clips in a non-additive mix and let them just run mixed together? I looked & couldnt find anything in the effects that looked like the answer.
Also, if there is such a way, does it matter if the 2 clips running are actually edited strings of shots? or do they have to be just long single clips.

You could also achieve this by nesting the sequences, layering them and playing with the opacity of each in the Motion tab.
Just drop your nest in layer 1 and second on 2. Then Control click on the layer 2 and choose open in viewer. Select the Motion tab and lower the opacity. That's probably the simplest way. The composite modes would allow to play with them though to get more interesting results.

Muted Color Effect in FCP

I have a clip that i need to make look really boring and dull. Other than changing it to black and white is there any other effect in FCP i can use to make it look muted and dull? Cheers.

you could add a sepia filter, but make the sepia grey from the colour picker,
rgb filter and dial out some of the colours, colour corrector 3way and crush the mids, duplicate the timeline video layer and blend composite mode to soft light or screen or add

HDV from After Effects to FCP - seeking advice...

I'm editing a concert which was shot with 5 cameras in Sony HDV (1080i), and FCP can actually play all 5 cameras in a multiclip synchronized with the canvas! (Dual G5, 1GB RAM) Well, it throws up an "Out Of Memory" red screen now and then, but I just ignore that and keep editing.
Now I'm creating an opening in After Effects set to HDV 1080i, and I'm wondering how to export (actually, MakeMovie) it. I've tried Animation / no compression and HDV / Keyframe every 15 frames. The Animation is about 20 times the file size of the HDV; they both play in FCP RT with some stuttering, they both render in the same amount of time, and they both look identical after rendering.
Can anyone suggest any other ways to export from After Effects so it will play without rendering in FCP?
I have a haunting feeling that if the GOP of the imported clip does not match the GOP of the timeline, I have to render. But I don't know how to detect the GOP of either.
Arghhh... how I suffer for art! Any suggestions would be welcome!

Hi James ... Yup, that's right, stacked on top of each other with opacity lowered on both as well! (I do like Macpros my old G5 went red when talking about HDV in the same room!!). I have though managed to replicate Seths problem by not using the same size comp. settings in AE. ie if my comp settings in AE are 320x 120 and I try resizing when rendering that seems to throw FCP off track, but if the AE comp settings are 1440 x 1080 and rendered at the same using HDV 1080 then FCP treats the quicktime footage as the same as Sony HDV.

Imovie style effects in FCP

how does one go about creating imovie style effects in FCP
like aged film, or rain, or film look
do i need to buy third party filters?

Graeme Nattress (www.nattress.com) has a very well regarded group of filters that will do "film look" as well as imitating aged film. Not sure what rain look is.
Or, edit your project in FCP, export a .dv file and run it through iMovie with whatever effect you'd like to apply.

Lightning Bolt Effect in FCP?

I'm looking for a way to do the cheesy iMovie/Premiere lightning bolt effect in FCP. Anyone know of one that is free? Thanks.

Yeah, I checked that out but it was only a few frames.
Eventually I exported a clip of the lightning over black from iMovie, brought it into FCP, keyed it, and then was able to shape and distort it to my liking.

I am not able to use Magic Bullet Looks with the After Effects trial

I am having troubles with downloading a trial. I am currently trying to find ways to edit videos using Magic Bullet Looks. I have found many ways, but when I go to download the Magic Bullet looks, it says After Effects cs6. For some reason it does not install even though I have the trial version of After Effects. So when I open After Effects, and go to the effects tab, it does not show up. I have looked on tutorials and many other ways.

Yeah - it's possible, but not without some trickery.
First download and install this:

You need greenscreen media. Apply the Keyer to the greenscreen footage. After the Keyer, apply Luma Fill. Select the Drop Zone source well and click on the clip you want to place inside the "person" (or whatever's left of the green screen). (The drop zone source can be from the event browser OR from the storyline [or connected clip -- and you can "hide" clips underneath the storyline.])
Place a generator or another clip (or clips) beneath the clip to serve as a background.
Adjust the Luma Fill with the Levels control -- drag the White Point down towards the black to "open it up". Or adjust the gamma (grey/middle control) upwards to create a mix (and try some of the other parameter controls as well.)

You can also use this effect (without a keyer) on "plain" (non-greenscreen) media and with or without drop zone media -- it's a cool way to add a mix of Black & White over whatever you place the clip. [Add drop zone media for a 3-way mix.]

PS - if FCPX "freaks" a little (doesn't show the effects in the video pane) simply select the transform icon under the left corner of the view, then click the Done button (that's all you need to do -- the effects should reappear in the Video inspector.) I didn't notice any adverse effects beyond that.

Keynote transition effects on fcp

Just wondering if anyone know how I can use keynote effects on fcp. Or how I can get transition plugins that Keynote program is using to use in fcp.

Afraid that Keynote and FCP are two different beasts, so there's no plug-in infrastructure or the like to share transition styles.
You can, however, generate clips in Keynote and export them as QuickTime movies into Final Cut. I use Keynote as my primary titling tool, as it's so fast and easy to use. For creating titles, be sure that your Master has a Transparent (None) background, and your slide the same. Then create your title animation, and Export it as a QuickTime movie with the "Include transparency" checkbox ticked, and using the Animation compression settings. This will give you a QT clip with an alpha channel that you can add to your FCP timeline.
I sometimes monkey with the size of the Keynote master to match the video size, and bring in still screenshots form the video to put in as a compositional reference (deleting it, of course, when I export the movie). But as you know, you can ultimately adjust the placement of the video in FCP, so it's not always necessary.

Motion projects look like VHS junk in a FCP timeline

Pro Res 422 sd FCP sequence, field dominance none. This is viewed through a Kona LHe on a Sony PVM-14M4U.
I have a bunch of Motion animations with particles and text. Video processing is set to 16-bit float to avoid banding on a bunch of gradients. When I edit the project into an FCP timeline, the result is a stair-stepping mess on every element much like VHS. If I export a self-contained movie from Motion, it looks like it should in the FCP timeline.
So the obvious answer is to export a movie for each animation from Motion and while I'm not adverse to that as an answer, I'd really like to know why a Motion project is looking so awful in FCP considering the project interchange capabilities that are supposed to be within FC Studio 2.
I am most likely missing something very simple as I am the King of User Error.

Display looks like thermal camera effect from photo booth

I am using my dad's iMac from (new from July) and the screen looks like the thermal effect when using photo booth. Everything is sort of glowing and highlighted. Is there a quick fix to make it go back to regular display use. I'm not sure what things my dad has pushed to get us here (he had a stroke and doesn't speak), so your guess is as good as mine.
It has apple care and is under warranty. Should I reinstall software? Will that fix it?

I should also say that I have 10.4.11 on the computer and I've tried changing things in appearance and desktop and screen saver to no avail. When it booted up on the restart from os update, it looked fine until the very end when this effect took over. It's really weird, blue and sort of glowing.

IChat and Photobooth effects- Broken! Not all but some

Okay so these effects work while iChatting and while looking at the screen in Photobooth. When you try to take a picture however, the result is either negative or white. The pictures looks alright up top right after its taken but down below when you look at the little polaroid icon the picture is negative or white. Also after you click on the little icon to review the picture it no longer looks fine up top.

I don't want to delete these effects. I know how to do that but I want to keep them! I know the pathways and everything. I think they may just be broken because I now have Snow Leopard. I'm not sure when these were installed but I know it was before I installed Snow Leopard. I think they were downloaded from the Apple website though.
Basically my question is, is there anyway to reinstall these effects or change a setting so that they work?
I could put on a screenshot, I have one I just don't know how to put it into the post. If you can explain then I could add that later if it would help.

They are the MoreiChatEffects.
They are causing problems in PhotoBooth mainly but also in iChat.
As you know they are in the Compostions folder you will know they are Quartz files.
If you Install Developer Tools off the Install Disk > Options Installs folder you can open them.
It seems they are not fully Intel or rather not fully integrated with the OS in Snow Leopard.
Older Quartz files like the ones that come with this Utility http://www.scriptsoftware.com/chatfx/ DO NOT work with the OS above 10.4.9
Both these seem to be because Apple have made changes in the way the basic Video stream is captured for each OS.
With the Chat FX ones I made a Duplicate (Finder > File Menu) and then played around.
If I was going to do it with these I would take an Apple one and keep the Input model and Output module and replace it with an MoreiChatEffects one to see if I could get it to work in Snow Leopard (Photobooth and iChat).

Thank you for your reply. Sorry to bug you again but can I ask some further questions? Pls excuse my lack of knowledge on these things.
In relation to your points:
1) In the ftp publishing settings, public_html is acutal in where it says "site name", where it says "URL" I have http://www.gippmed.com. I was advised to put public_html in "site name" from my hosting. If I put anything else it publishes the entire site to a folder with that name on the server and is not viewable online?
2) I have removed the spaces in the album page name and will reupload soon. In relation to the image file names, am I correct in saying that iweb is naming them from the captions? Do you really have to use one word captions or use underscores, it looks a little odd? I have read troubleshooting articles about iweb and spaces and it also recommends similar as you are, suggesting that all page names should have underscore instead of spaces. Problem is, if for example I change the page name "About Me" to "About_Me" iweb automatically changes it in the navigation menu and this looks silly to have undescores in the Nav Menu. Is there a way around this?
Lastly, a new problem that I have never had before:
Previously, iweb would remember what I had published and only publish new site changes. Now, every time I turn my computer off and on, I open iweb and it doesn't recognise any of the previous publishing, ie it republishes the entire site.

Trying to import FCP 7 (XML) but chanels out of sync

Hi,
I just exported a project from FCP to Premiere Pro CS6. It looked like it worked and the sequences were there OK but when I play back I get problems with audio. The right chanel is in sync but the left is massivly out (over a second I think).
I am using Premiere Pro CS6.
Any ideas?

Well now that I look at all the clips in FCP more closely I see some clips from the same tape are in sync and others are out of sync. And one section of tape which I captured twice was in sync on one clip and out of sync on the other. So it can't be the tapes.
Maybe the sync problem is caused by not coordinating the tape playing and FCP capturing properly every time! So I will try re-capturing the problem sections of tape.

In GarageBand 10.0.2 you can no longer add all kinds of effects freely; this GarageBand '11 feature has been discontinued. Pick one of the predefined patches that already has the effects you want.
However, you can add effects from the predefined audio units.
You'll see the predefined effects on the track, when you open the Smart Controls. To add audio units, click the button and enlarge the the smart controls pane by dragging the dividing line to the Track Area upwards.
