Looking to expand wireless network

i live in a house of 1400 feet and i am looking to get more coverage out of my time capsual.  It there a way to do that?  I am using the old apple wall plugs wify but they seam to not increase the distance of the wify signal.  some one told me that the new airport express is better then the time capusale.  i just bought my time capsual in January. Would i be able to buy a new express and hook it into the time capusale.

some one told me that the new airport express is better then the time capusale
What version of the Time Capsule do you have?  Look for the Model No on the bottom of the device if you are not sure. It will start with "A" followed by four numbers.
I am using the old apple wall plugs wify but they seam to not increase the distance of the wify signal.
What version of the "old" Express are these models?  Look on the side of the device for the Model No.  The only versions that will extend a Time Capsule network wirelessly are Model No A1264....and the Model A1392.
Would i be able to buy a new express
Your decision on that. It's about $100 and change.
and hook it into the time capusale.
Not sure what you mean by "hook".  Would this be a wireless only connection.....or.....are you planning to "hook" the AirPort Express into the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet cable?

  • Looking for best wireless Network Adapter for my PowerMac G5

    Dual 2.3 GHz PowerMac G5 (PowerMac11,2)

Before the local Mac Store upgraded me from Tiger To Leopard I was using a Hawking Technology HWUG1A Wireless Adapter. It was clunky and the software crashed me now and then. Now that I'm on 10.5 the Hawking Tech. software  crashed me every time it tried to connect to the router. I uninstalled it using AppCleaner, then reinstalled the Hawking 'Leopard version' of the software/firmware, still crashing me.
There support says "it should work" which I could still pursue getting it to work correctly, but I want to move on since I've never been happy with the product and don't want to risk wasting to much time incase it is simply not going to work.
It seems I have some PCI(e) slots (whatever is in the PowerMac) available on this mac, can it take a wireless network card? That would be much better than a USB doogle. Anyway, I'm looking for a reliable solution for connecting my PowerMac G5 to my router without using cables. Can you please recommend a product if you know of one?
    Thanks for your time!

    Hi Monty,
These USB Wifi adapters work great...

I don't see any PCIe Wifi cards, just PCI.

  • Expanding wireless network with Airport Express but without Airport Extreme

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if I can expand my wireless network with my Airport Express without Airport Extreme base station. I have a Netgear wireless router. Is it possible? Can you give me tips on how to set it up?
    Thanks a lot!
    Marc

marcribeiro, Welcome to the discussion area!
No that is not possible. The Netgear is not compatible with Apple's WDS.

  • Password Protected Wireless Network with Unknown Password

I have a Linksys WRTP54G wireless router for internet access with my laptop pc. It was installed by a local computer tech (who is no longer accessible) several years ago with my Gateway desktop computer which has Windows 98 for an operating system. I just purchased a Lenovo laptop which runs Windows Vista Home Premium. When I "power up" the Lenovo, I receive a message "Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Web Page". I then use Windows Network Diagnostics, and View Available Wireless Networks. Two networks are presented. The first is linksys - unsecured network. The second is the last name of the computer tech - security enabled network. I want to use the Security Enabled Network but when I choose it I am prompted for a password that I do not have. Can anyone tell me how to overcome this obstacle and either eliminate the need for a password or reset it with one that I create? I don't have great technical skills but follow instructions well.

You can just change the wireless settings by accessing the router's set-up page.. Try to check what is the the ip of your router by going to the desktop w/c is wired to the router and online.
    -Go to RUN
    -Typed in -winipcfg-
-Get the default gateway (it starts w/ 192.168.15.1)
-Open up IE or Firefox, typed in 192.168.15.1 on the address bar
-If it ask for the UN and PW, just typed -admin- (lower case) on the UN and PW
-If you see the Linksys set-up page that has blue and black color your on the right page BUT after you typed in -admin- and it still ask for the UN and PW and the last tech didnt leave you a UN and PW for the router then you need to reset the router and reconfigure everything...
-BUT if your on the Linksys set-up page, click on WIRELESS tab
-Look below and look for the WIRELESS NETWORK NAME SSID
-If you want to change it then go ahead and after changing it just click CONTINUE or you will go back to the same page
-If you want to check the wireless password or unsecure it:
-Click on WIRELESS SECURITY under the wireless tab
-You can get there your wireless password
-If you want to disable the wireless security then just
-Click on the drop down arrow on the SECURITY MODE and click on DISABLE
    Hope this helps....... n_n

  • Laptop can't see Wireless network

I turned off my power strip the other night which turned off my Lynksys WRT54G router. When I fired it all back up, my laptop can't see the router. My blue-ray was connected to the router via ethernet for Netflix and it is still able to work through the ethernet cable and I can get online with my laptop with an ethernet cable, it just won't see my network wirlessly. It can see neighboring wireless networks though. Help!

Advise you to log on to wireless router configuration page and recheck the wireless configuration again, try to find out any incorrect configuration. If need more ideas, can take a look on this wireless network troubleshooting tips article, hope able to help you more.

  • Wireless network security solution

    Hello All!
I'm looking to protect wireless network from possible network and malware attacks, bandwidth usage monitoring and content filtering.
Will Cisco IPS 4300-4500 series do the job? How about software solution (Cisco IOS Intrusion Prevention System)?
I would appreciate you thoughts and suggestions.

Is this a router that is supplied by your ISP?  Is it a DSL or FIOS service?
If so, let's reinstall the printer in this manner:
    - Unplug the Internet line that runs between the router and the wall
    - Turn the power off on the router, wait 30 seconds, then turn the power back on.
    - Go through the normal process of connecting the printer to the router.
    - Now find the IP address of the printer (it should be on the self-test printout), type it into a browser.
    - On that screen you will find a Networking Tab, then on the left Wireless, then the IPv4 Tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you know what that is, set an IP outside that range but no higher than 254 (the last number in the address). If you do not know, use the current IP address.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router IP (its on the self-test printout) in the Gateway and first DNS field, leave the second blank.
    - Click 'Apply'
    - Finally, plug in the Internet line, reboot the router and test.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • WRT54G - wireless network listing gives me two automatic choices.

    let me explain.
On my "view wireless networks" are I used to connect to a basic connection called Linksys. This is the SSID that the router names by default. This connection always said excellent in the signal strength area.
Yesterday I noticed my internet was disconnecting itself alot and the signal strength said low or very low with around 9-20 mbps. I looked at the wireless networks and the one I connected to was unsecured. I had secured it about 3 months ago so this confused me. I messed with a few security setting on my routers configuration page and noticed they weren't doing anything to my router.
I re named my SSID, turned the broadcasting off then back on and a new wireless network appeared. It had 54 mpbs and excellent signal strength like the one I've always had.
Heres the problem though. The "linksys" SSID automatically makes me connect to it when I log on my computer. Even after I went to advanced setting and deleted it. not only that my internet is alot slower and im getting disconnected around every 30 mins. This never happened before. I'm wondering if its possible that this myserious second network connection could be the source of my problem.
Also, my router is connecting to a 802.11G Wireless-G adapter.
sorry if the post was a bit long, wanted to eliminate all variables.

As I understand , You have your new Network configured on
the Router, with a new SSID Name, and WEP Key.
Then You could try this :
Powercycle the Router for 20 Seconds. Restart the Wireless
Computer.Once the Computer has restarted, [ if it's a Windows
    XP System ] , click ' start ', type services.msc, press return,
you could find Services - Local Screen . Scroll down, and find
Wireless Zero Configuration, Right click on it, click restart.
Once done, Close all the Screens, click ' start ' Navigate to
Control Panel, Go to Network Connections, Right Click on
Wireless Network Connection, and select Properties.
You find three Tabs  - General , Wireless Networks and
Advanced, don't you ? Click on Wireless Networks,
Check ' Use Windows to configure the Wireless Network
Settings ' and down below, Under Preferred Networks,
Highlight each of the names individually, and click remove.
Once done, Click OK, Right click on Wireless Network
Connection, Select ' View Available Networks '
Select the name you 've had configured on the Router,
    Click Connect,
Type in the WEP Key, the 10 Digit Number,
    Confirm it,
Once Connected, Check the Online Connectivity.
From now on, the Computer will consider your network
as the Most Preferred Network to associate with..
Kindly try this, and if the Problem persists, send a text
    across for any further assistance
    Thanking you,
    Shriraj.

  • How can I expand my wireless network with a Time Capsule and Airport Express?

My entire house is wired for ethernet access (2 floors).  I have a Time Capsule on the 2nd floor that reaches the entire house except for one room.
In this one room I have an ethernet port plugged into an Airport Express.
The problem I encounter is that I have two separate wifi networks with two separate names.  I realize I can extend the wireless network on the 2nd floor to the 1st floor but I can only do this wirelessly to my knowledge, and the entire problem is that the signal doesn't reach the front room.  Also, there is really no place in-between that the AE can be placed to extend the reach.  The building is concrete and steel, I think that has a lot to do with the problem.
My question is: Can I have two wireless routers (connected to the same home network via ethernet) broadcast the same wifi network?  I also have a SONOS system that further complicates things, I'm afraid.  Would it help if I drew some sort of diagram?
    Thanks!

Your network is not working as you describe.. or I have misunderstood the layout..
What is the broadband type? Modem is where? What is the main router?
From your screen shots the main router is the airport express that covers one room which seems wrong.
Why isn't the TC the main router? or both bridged.. if you go back and look at the apple document.. one or both apple routers are in bridge mode..
You are having issues with setup .. half of which is caused by v6 airport utility.
What OS are you running? Please install 5.6 utility.. do it.. do it now!!
    Easy for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
    Messy but possible for ML.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

My ipod touch will recognize my home wireless network but when I try to select it the wheel just keeps spinning. It looks as though I have a good signal but my router is an older apple extreme. I've updated to the lasted firmware but it's still not working. I have two older imacs and a wii that connect to the router. Any thoughts? Thanks

    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router

  • Can I use an Aexp to wirelessly expand my network to another Aexp?

I have a cable DSL coming in to my first Airport Express, works great,I tried to hook up a 2nd AExp upstairs to expand my network. Can't get it to work,My macbook will find 1 or the other, but not both,is it possible? Do I need an A.E.BS at my modem? Is this the only fix?

Here is how I recommend that you setup your AirPort Expresses. You will want to assign separate base station or device names to each device in order to help identify them. Airport Utility > Manual Setup > Base Station tab below the icons.
I will call the AX connected to your modem AX1 and the remote device AX2.
    _For AX1:_
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode is "Create a wireless network"
Wireless Network Name - Your choice
Make sure you have a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Radio Mode - 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
    Channel - Automatic
    Security - WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Password - your password
    Update to save any changes
    _For AX2:_
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode is "Extend a wireless network". If you do not see this as a choice, hold down the "option" key on your computer when you click the selection box.
Wireless Network Name - Same as AX1. The name of AX1's network should appear as a choice here
Make sure you have a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Wireless Security - Exact same setting as AX1
Password - Exact same setting as AX1
    Update to save settings.
You cannot select 802.11n only on the AX2. Even if you could, having any other b/g devices on the network would still bring the speed down.
Please post back on your progress.

My appletv is properly connected to wireless network, everything looks all right but it can't adjust the time and date. As a result it doesn't work.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Assuming this is not the first time you have used your Apple TV
You might try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    Also try restarting the router.
If the problem persists, try a restore, you may want to try the previous procedures several times before doing this.
If restoring from the Apple TV doesn't help, try restoring from iTunes using a USB cable.
If this is a new Apple TV, in addition to trying the above, it may also be that your network router is not allowing access to the timeserver, check that your router allows access over port 123.

  • Can you expand an existing wireless network with the airport?

Can you use an Airport Extreme to wirelessly expand an existing wireless network?

Yes you can, only if the primary base is an airport extreme, airport express or time capsule

  • I'm looking to extent my wireless network.

I have a wireless network running off an airport extreme. Can I use an airport express as a remote base station rather than using another airport extreme. I will be needing to share the internet by ethernet from this remote base station and will also be plugging in a USB hardrive. The remote base station though will need to connect via the wireless network from the airport extreme.
I currently have a ethernet printer and a network HDD (used as my timecapsule backup drive) hanging off the extreme all of which works well.
    cheers

You cannot use an Airport Express with a USB hard drive. Only printers are supported. You can extend a wireless network, however, as long as the Airport Express is in range of the AEBS.

  • Cannot detect any wireless networks on my HP ENVY TouchSmart m7 j120dx

    Hello,
My laptop won't pick up any wireless networks at all - I'm having what seems like a few different problems:
    1.  Because the laptop won't pick up any wireless networks, I can't of course connect to the internet without using my ethernet cable.
    2.  When I try to turn my adapter on using the F12 key, all it does is toggle airplane mode - which isn't going to help me connect to the internet.
    3.  When I go to 'Network' under PC Settings, I can toggle airplane mode but the bluetooth is greyed out and can't be toggled and it doesn't even give me an option to turn back on my wifi adapter.
    4.  When I went into the Network and Sharing Center to enable the adapter that way under 'Change Adapter Settings', I couldn't even see the adapter listed there.  All it showed was Ethernet and Hamachi because I use LogMeIn Hamachi on my computer.
By this point, I was like "Oh, great - the adapter might somehow not even be there even though it was last night," (I was online wirelessly the night before) so I went into the device manager and then expanded Network Adapters I only saw the same two Ethernet and LogMeIn adapters.
    5.  So next, I tried downloading the adapter - but the problem is, I have no idea what kind my laptop is supposed to have.  Going to the download drivers section in the support area of the hp website, I found many options and none of them seemed to work.  I also tried redownloading the Wireless Button Driver (whatever that's called) and that didn't work.
    5.  I even tried doing a system restore to a point of about a week ago - this also did not solve my problem because the same things were happening and the same things I tried above still are not solving the problem either.
I know countless other people have had the same problem(s) mentioned above (simple Google search told me that) with their HP ENVY Notebook PCs, so I'm hoping that someone can help me and finally solve this problem for me.
The model  is HP ENVY TouchSmart m7 j120dx, the model number is E8A11UA#ABA, and my computer is running Windows 8.1 64-bit.
    On another note, here's the names of the only 2 adapters that show up in my device manager list (one is for LogMeIn Hamachi);
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (Ethernet)
LogMeIn Hamachi Virtual Ethernet Adapter (Hamachi)
The wireless was working fine before with Hamachi installed, so I doubt that has any significance.
If there's any other information you need that I did not mention above, feel free to ask me.  I look forward to someone replying as soon as possible and being able to find a solution to this problem for me!
EDIT: One other thing I should mention is that the wifi in my location is working fine for every other device I try (phone, gaming console, other people's laptops/desktops, etc.

    Hello dginther,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand wireless is not working properly. If the issue just began occurring, I would perform a system restore. I want you to bring the computer back to the earliest restore point possible, in an attempt to dodge whatever caused the issue. Here is a document on how to perform a System Restore: System Restore
Next, please try the steps in this HP document: Troubleshooting Your Wireless Network and Internet Connection (Windows 8)
These steps should be enough to resolve the issue. If not, you can try a manual reinstall of the driver:
    1. Go into Device Manager, then Network adapters.
    2. Right-click on the wireless driver, and select "Uninstall".
    3. Restart the computer. This will force the driver to reinstall itself.
Please let me know the results of your troubleshooting. Thanks!
