Looking to get a new MacBook Pro/Air

Hi everyone,
I am looking to replace one of my two Macs in the near future (an iMac and a MacBook Pro). Both computers are almost four years old, and I would like to upgrade one of them.
Because it's been a while since I bought a computer, I'm a little behind on processor speed, etc.
My iMac, which is the faster of my two computers has the following specs:
Processor: 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4GB 1067 MHz RAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB
When I got this computer, I did a lot of video editing, and some basic to intermediate GFX work. The iMac seemed to do the trick just fine, though I'm aware that I could've gone for something more muscular.
I don't do very much video editing these days, though I still would like a computer that, in a pinch, could handle some basic Final Cut or Adobe Premiere editing.
I'm also leaning toward foregoing a desktop computer, and simply getting a laptop, so that I'm more mobile.
Intel has a new class of compressors, about which I know nothing...So, my questions are:
Should I decide to get a laptop - which is the closest approximation to the specs above? Is there an Air that could pull that off?
Thanks a lot.
Cheers,
V

Well, portability with good batt. life. Will be using it for work and home. Not worried to much about HD size as I just picked up Seagate wireless 500GB external HD. I am alittle concerned about the Air and its 1.7 GHz processor vs Pro's i5 processor.

  • Looking to get a new MacBook Pro

Hey guys, I've been looking to get a new MBP for the past few months now, and have held off in wait of Lion being announced. I know it's coming out sometime in July, but nothing more specific than that, and I'm really eager to get a MBP! I was wondering if I were to purchase a MBP today, would I be eligible for some sort of free upgrade to Lion once it was released, similar to how Microsoft did to buyers of new Vista machines once the release of Windows 7 was close? Any help would be great!

OS X Lion is going to have all sorts of issues, third party software won't work, printer drivers won't work, OS X itself will have to be tweaked.
Apple is changing all sorts of things, locking the OS down, no boot disks and so forth.
Save the hassle for the others, for $30 you can wait 6-8 months for it to stabilize.
Get the 2.2Gz 15" high res anti glare or better.

  • Getting a new MacBook Pro: HDD or SSD question

    Hey everyone!
I'm about to get a new MacBook Pro, and there'sone problem I need a little help solving.
I could either get a 500gb 7200rpm HDD at noextra charge, OR I could get a 128gb SSD for an additional $90. I'm slightlyleaning towards the SSD for the general reasons you've all probably heard aboutby now.
Now let me just explain my reasoning here a bit. Ishould say beforehand that I already plan on getting a 1TB external USB drive, regardless of which internal drive I get. So space isn't really the issue.
From what I understand, if I were to buy the MBPwith the 500gb HDD and just buy an SSD separately, that would total me around$220 (the price of a 128gb SSD nowadays). However, if I were to buy the laptopwith the SSD and then buy a 500 gb HDD at 7200 rpm, it would cost me $90 + $70= $160. So I'd be saving money by buying the SSD with the MBP it seems, noteven counting the fact that I could sell the SSD for a higher price than what Iactually bought it for!
I know it sounds like I might already have myanswers, but I basically have three questions:
    1) Does that argument make sense to you? As in,is there anything I'm missing or not considering?
    2) Does anyone know what brand of SSD Apple shipsin MBP nowadays?
    3) I was planning on using my SSD for theOS/applications, and using the 1TB HDD for files/music/movies etc. Is that anideal setup or is there something I'm missing about that as well?
I'd appreciate any helpful answers. Thanks!

1 - Everyone has their own way of looking at it...
2 - Toshiba but it can always change...
3 - seems ok, iTunes might not really like to have all the files in an external drive but it seems ok...
P.s.- 1TB will not be enough... LOL... try something bigger like a 3TB drive (think future friendly)

  • I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have questions about the Applecare extended warranty?

I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have questions about the Applecare extended warranty? I want to know if the 3 year extended warranty covers what damage. Like water damage, accidental damage, lost or stolen macbook, manufactory defects, or any other kind of damage, maybe be even cosmetic damage. Can anyone help me?

If you are talking about features of the MBP itself, as long as you are not looking at  the Retina models, then the memory you can upgrade yourself for a lot less than Apple charges, and that does not affect the warranty as Apple considers memory a user permitted upgrade.  Great sources are Crucial and OWC, both are Mac specialists and have on-line videos on how to do the install.
If the 15" is what you are looking at, a good upgrade is the 7200 rpm hard drive, gives a little better performance over the standard 5400 rpm drive.
The Hi Res screen is good if you do a lot of graphics work.
Comparing the 13" amd 15" you will notice the 15" has a second, discrete graphic processor...helps when you get into heavy duty videos, games, graphics...but keep in mind that kicking in the second processor uses a lot of power and will run the battery down faster.
If you are looking at the Retina models, then keep in mind there are no post-purchase upgrade options...you have to buy with everything you want at the start.
    Just some thoughts.

  • Can I get a new macbook pro under the warranty?

Its been two months since I got my macbook pro. I got the newer 2011 version. Less than a month into getting it my keys started falling off and less than 2 months later my hard drive went out for no reason and I had to get it replaced. And now my other keys are all falling off too. I don't understand. I feel like I was sold a refurbished mac because everything keeps breaking. Do you think its better to just get a new macbook pro? Is that even possible? I also feel like it takes a while to turn on than when I first got it. How long is the normal start up time?

If you have had this Mac for less then a year then the computer is still under warranty.
I also feel like it takes a while to turn on than when I first got it. How long is the normal start up time?
It depends. If you have applications set to launch when you startup the Mac, that can slow down the amount of time it takes to boot your Mac.
Open System Preferences > Users & Groups then select the Login Items tab.

  • Getting a new Macbook Pro

I am getting a new Macbook Pro and I don't know which one to get. I will either get the high-end 13" or the low-end 15". I am a high school student that will be running Photoshop Elements, Microsoft Office, and heavy Internet browsing, such as building a website using online building software. I will be doing a lot of graphic design as well. My main concern is will I suffer from portibility with the 15" or suffering from not getting the quad core processor with the 13". Which should I get?

If you will be doing graphic design I would say get the 15 inch. Like you said it has a quad core processor and it has dedicated video processor/ram

  • Getting a new MacBook Pro, Upgrade to Logic Studio 9?

Hey all. I'm getting a new Macbook Pro soon, and I was thinking of upgrading to Logic Studio 9. I own a legit retail edition copy of the previous Logic Studio (Pro 8), and I was thinking of just installing 9 on my new computer.
What things will I need to do this upgrade? I still have the original box, with the manuals. Including the one booklet that has the serial number stickers on it.
    Many thanks in advance.

Thanks for the answers guys. It was running in my mind, especially this is the first time I'm doing a program upgrade like this. Thanks alot!

  • Getting a new MacBook Pro, will 2.0 update be wiped when I move to new Mac?

I am getting a new MacBook Pro in comming days, and since my iPod touch is currently synced to my Windows notebook... (my iPhone is hooked to my Mac Pro, so there's no problem with that one), however....
When I connect my iPod touch to the new MacBook pro, I know that it has to re-format to the Mac format, but will the 2.0 upgrade wiped from the iPod during the format?

  • I cannot get my new macbook pro running off my home wifi? HELP

I have my Mac desktop running off a dlink (Time Warner Cable) AirPort - BUT I cannot get my new macbook pro to even find this AirPort. It also wont connect as a wifi network. Everytime I try and enter the password it comes back with a connection timeout. What can I do to get macbook to recongnize my AirPort Base Station.

If I open up the AirPort App - it only says that it cannot find my AirPort wireless device (probably because I dont have one) and then if I go to networks to connect to my wifi I select my home network and it ask me to input a password (as it should) but when I try to put in my password for my network it says "connection timeout" and the screen behind it (where the options for wifi or ethernet ext are) it says no ip address under wifi (also the status indicator is showing yellow - since my wifi is on just not connected to a network. I cannot seem to find any place to input my information for my specific router. Although I can connect to neighboring wifi routers just fine.

  • When is there going to be a new macbook pro/air release?

I have been saving my money up for sometime now to purchase either a new macbook pro or a new macbook air. I have been constantly checking the internet for any news regarding when the new releases of the macbook pro/air will be available. I was hoping that Apple would announce news regarding the new versions of the macbook when they presented the iPad but as you all probably know this did not happen.
My question is as follows: I do not want to purchase my new macbook until the new releases come out. With that being said I am growing impatient and have heard little news regarding this subject (presumably because of all the hype surrounding the iPad). Thus, could any of you more informed Apple analysts give me a ballpark figure on when you expect to see the new versions of the macbook pro/air for sale? I can and I will wait a couple of additional weeks for the new releases but I might cave in and buy one now if it is going to be a while before the new versions are released.
    Thanks,
    John Michael

+I do not want to purchase my new macbook until the new releases come out+
You're in for a very long wait then, because there will always be something better, faster, sexier, newer around the corner ...
All hardware manufacturers operate in product cycles and you're right in thinking that if a model has been out for 18-24 months it's "likely" a revision is due, but that's a guess and nobody here knows (or if they do they are bound by NDA's not to reveal anything).

  • I have leopard and want to upgrade to lion. I have a macbook about 3 years old and wonder if I should just get a new macbook pro ($$$) instead. Is it worth the headache to upgrade to snow leopard and then lion? How does lion perform on an intel core duo 2

I have a macbook about 3 years old running leopard. I amwondering ifitwouldbeworth the trouble to install snowleopardand then lion ($60.00) or just buy a new macbook pro ($$$$$$). How does lion perform on an intel core 2 duo processor?

I have Lion installed on a Mini with a C2D processor. The same Mini has Snow Leopard on another partition and there is no noticeable difference in operational speed between the two OS's. But compared to my new MBPro 17" with a 2.83GHz i7, the Mini running Lion is noticeably slower. So if you can afford anew MBPro, then I would get it because you will probably be unhappy with the performance of Lion on the older MBPro. The other benefit of getting a new MBPro with Lion is that if you have any Power PC applications currently on the old MBPro, which will not operate in Lion, then you still have the ability to use them. Many users got stung by upgrading to Lion, only to find they could no longer use the older PPC applications.

  • How do I get my New Macbook pro to sync with .mac account????

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro to replace my Ibook G4 which had been successfully syncing on my .mac account with my Imac G5 desktop computer.
The new Macbook Pro has Leopard while my G5 has Tiger. The salesperson told me that this would NOT be a problem at all. I configured the Ical to sync automatically in the preferences along with contacts and mail accounts. They both worked fine but the ICal does not sync.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Skip

Thanks for your reply. Yes I did, several times. What finally happened is after about 18 hours, the syncing started to work. I think what happened was that the mac server must take some time for backing up or whatever and all of a sudden when it did, it synced....
    go figure.

  • Thinking about getting a new macbook pro, just a few questions first --

    Hey guys,
I've been a mac user for about 5 years now and I love them. I've had a white 2.0 c2d macbook for about a year now. I primarily used this macbook for work, and my PC desktop for occasional games. I was thinking about getting a mac pro to do some gaming since my PC desktop broke about 2 months ago, but recently I've been getting more expenses so my wallet has grown thinner. So now I don't really have enough cash to get the mac pro. I also can't sell the macbook for a mac pro because I need something mobile for work. What I can do though is sell my macbook and get a macbook pro.
My question to you guys is, how do you like your macbook pro as a desktop replacement? I have a dell 2407-HC monitor as well to use with it. Does it game well over boot camp? I know cider hasn't yielded good performance, so please stick to bootcamp reviews. I'm not looking at anything really really intense, as I don't really have time to do as much gaming as I used to, but it'd be nice if it could run the orange box (mostly team fortress 2), dawn of war dark crusade, assassin's creed (when it comes out), and possibly the warhammer online mmo or age of conan mmo.
The other question is whether or not I should wait for a new one. Macrumors says that it's been about 150 days, and the macbook pros are updated every 180 days or so. I've already waited a few months since my desktop broke to see if the mac pro was going to be updated for penryn, but now the situation has changed, and now it looks like I might have to wait if I want a macbook pro. So, to wait or not to wait?
Any other opinions are welcome as well. Thanks.

    What's the beneift of buying 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 instead of 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7?
Benefit of the QUAD core and the BASE UNIT 13" is extra cores for "heavy" photo and video editing and dedicated graphics
