Looking to record 3 XLR Mics

I've been doing my homework on bringing in three separate voice tracks into GB, since that allows for greater post-production flexibility. However, it looks like all the manufacturers are all about 2 mic inputs. Crap!
Based on some snooping around here, it seems that PreSonus and M-Audio are the two favorites (please correct me if I'm wrong). We've got the FirePod (8 XLR inputs) at $800, FireBox (2 XLR inputs) at $300 and some M-Audio deal (2 XLR inputs) at $400. Again, if someone has some recommendations here, I'd appreciate them.
So, I'm faced with $800 for the FirePod (which comes with the official HangTime seal of approval™) with room to grow or try to string two FireBox's together at $600 and run the risk of complications created by two firewire audio devices plugged in.
Wadda guys think?
    GarageBand 3

First off, Good for you for doing your homework!
Now where did you see the FirePod for $800? That is WAY over list. Amazon has the Presonus FirePod for $599.
Obviously you know that I love mine ("Seal of Approval"! Ha ha, I like that) and if it's within budget, and you think your needs might grow, I'd say GFI. However if the FirePod is overkill, perhaps the Presonus INSPIRE 1394 FireWire Interface with 2 inputs for $199 would be better. The pair you need would total around $400 to get the 4 inputs
Just another option to consider.

  • Cannot record a mic with Audigy 2 ZS through Logic Platinum 5.1

    Hi, ive got the SB Audigy 2 ZS sound card and am having some problems with ASIO... i can record a mic through the mic input when using PC AV with my card, but when i try to use ASIO i cant record with a mic. I would use PC AV but the latency is way too high on it, ive looked around loads of forums including Logic forums but no one seems to have an answer to this problem, and most of the time it goes unreplied.. does anyone know of anything i can do to get my card to record in ASIO??
    thanks,
    ...Mike...

    Thanks man. I'm off to learn about kx.
    I guess I should not be surprised by lack of mod response. Apparently creative drivers are still going wanting. I wonder what kind of response a query to creative support would yield. I think I will shoot them a copy of my post just for giggles. I will also tell them what I think about SNEAKING that aol crap onto my rig.

  • Flash recording through mic

    Hi,
    I've been trying to figure out how to record using mic feature. I had modified the example in the AS3 guide to something like this:
    import flash.events.MouseEvent;
    import flash.net.URLRequest;
    import flash.utils.ByteArray;
    import flash.net.SharedObject;
    stop();
    stopRecord.visible =false;
    mybutton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, recordmic);
    trace("here!");
    function recordmic(event:MouseEvent):void {
    const DELAY_LENGTH:int = 20000;
    var mic:Microphone = Microphone.getMicrophone();
    mic.setSilenceLevel(0, DELAY_LENGTH);
    mic.gain = 50;
    mic.rate = 44;
    mybutton.visible = false;
    stopRecord.visible = true;
    mic.addEventListener(SampleDataEvent.SAMPLE_DATA, micSampleDataHandler);
    stopRecord.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, stoprecordmic);
    var soundBytes:ByteArray = new ByteArray();
    /*var timer:Timer = new Timer(DELAY_LENGTH);
    timer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, timerHandler);
    timer.start(); */
    function micSampleDataHandler(event:SampleDataEvent):void
        while(event.data.bytesAvailable)
           var sample:Number = event.data.readFloat();
            soundBytes.writeFloat(sample);
              soundBytes.position = 0;
    function stoprecordmic(event:MouseEvent):void
        mic.removeEventListener(SampleDataEvent.SAMPLE_DATA, micSampleDataHandler);
        var header:URLRequestHeader = new URLRequestHeader ("Content-type","application/octed-stream");
         var mp3URLRequest : URLRequest = new URLRequest("uploadsound.php");
         mp3URLRequest.requestHeaders.push(header);
         mp3URLRequest.method = URLRequestMethod.POST;
         mp3URLRequest.data= soundBytes;
         stopRecord.visible=false;
         mybutton.visible = true;
    Here, there are two buttons, one starts recording and the other stops recording. The resulting .swf file is only 2kb in size and it doesn't do what it is supposed to do.
    What am I doing wrong here? Other players similar to this have sizes in the range of 80-100 kb.
    Help will be very much appreciated!
    Thankyou!

    you made soundBytes local to recordmic().  and it looks like you might be nesting named functions.  fix that:
    var soundBytes:ByteArray = new ByteArray();
    stop();
    stopRecord.visible =false;
    mybutton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, recordmic);
    trace("here!");
    function recordmic(event:MouseEvent):void {
    const DELAY_LENGTH:int = 20000;
    var mic:Microphone = Microphone.getMicrophone();
    mic.setSilenceLevel(0, DELAY_LENGTH);
    mic.gain = 50;
    mic.rate = 44;
    mybutton.visible = false;
    stopRecord.visible = true;
    mic.addEventListener(SampleDataEvent.SAMPLE_DATA, micSampleDataHandler);
    stopRecord.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, stoprecordmic);
    function micSampleDataHandler(event:SampleDataEvent):void
        while(event.data.bytesAvailable)
           var sample:Number = event.data.readFloat();
            soundBytes.writeFloat(sample);
              soundBytes.position = 0;

  • Looking to record from tv to Mac mini

    Im looking to record from my tv to my Mac Mini, in a TiVo type way. How would i go about doing this and im sure there is a device i would have to use via usb or firewire. Thanks.

    Hello,
    There isn't really a one-stop solution for the Mac Mini yet. So, you can't just run to your Apple dealer and purchase everything in a single kit and go home and plug it in.
    But, there are many ways to get the end-result you want. Here are some articles that should give you a really good start in picking out what you need:

  • [SOLVED] Whirring noise in recording via mic - will HW mixing help?

    I'm getting whirring noise in mic recording (adjustng mic and mic-boost does not help) it also happens on ubuntu 11.04; so I guess it is a hardware issue. Strangely, I hear no noise in Windows XP in recording (sound recorder). Whereas in Archlinux, skype, audacity, arecord, gnome-sound-recorder all are having whirring noise.
    I guess, it might have something to do with Intel Audio, so I'm planning to buy Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1 (emu10k1), which has Hardware Mixing feature supported by Alsa.
    Do you know any way to "suppress noise" and "echo cancellation" in arch for microphone recording?
    Please advise.
    We can hear the noise (unamplified/no mic boost) test-mic.wav recorded
    arecord -f cd -d 5 test-mic.wav

    hi archers,
    I went to the computre hardware market today to buy 'Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1 with emu10k1 chipset'.
    I thought that having hardware mixing (HWMIX) will fix noise, as the sound card is shielded from interference.
    But, unfortunately or fortunately, the SBS 5.1 is not available in the market. only SBS 5.1VX model which has a different chipset is available.
    So, I retured a bit disappointed thinking that the evil microsoft has caused the soundcard manufactureres to stop support  to non MS OS, oh my poor linux hardware!
    Based on the following, http://www.voxforge.org/home/docs/faq/f … pling-rate
    I tried fiddling with sample rate, and you know what, the whirring noise is gone. It's like  Windows (without fan noise suppression and echo cancellation but no static noise)
    HURRAY I FOUND THE SOLUTION: setting the sound-card sampling-rate to 96000 (for my intel sound card) fixes the noise!
    Here's HOWTO fix microphone noise problem in linux which was bugging me for many years!
    1. Determine soundcards in the system
    $ arecord --list-devices
    output wrote:**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
    card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 2: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    soudcar  is hw:0,0
    2. Determine Sound card's sampling-rate of the sound card
    arecord -f dat -r 60000 -D hw:0,0 -d 5 test.wav
    output wrote:"Recording WAVE 'test.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 60000 Hz, Stereo
    Warning: rate is not accurate (requested = 60000Hz, got = 96000Hz)
             please, try the plug plugin
    Now that we got the max-sampling-rate to 96000, we should set this in pulseaudio's configuration file /etc/pulse/daemon.conf. So first test it:
    Just a quick test
    arecord -f dat -r 96000 -D hw:0,0 -d 5 test.wav
    And surprise, surprise, no whirring static noise in the mic recording in linux. Hurray again!
    3. Setting the soundcard's sampling rate into pulse audio configuration
    the default sample-rate in pulseaudio is
    cat /etc/pulse/daemon.conf|grep sample-rate
    output wrote:; default-sample-rate = 44100
    we got 44100 and which is disabled
    Let's set that to our hardware specific settings:
    su -c "sed 's/; default-sample-rate = 44100/default-sample-rate = 96000/g' -i /etc/pulse/daemon.conf"
    let's verify the changes to deamon.conf
    cat /etc/pulse/daemon.conf|grep sample-rate
    output wrote:default-sample-rate = 96000
    It's done
    4. Restart pulseaudio to apply the new settings
    pulseaudio --kill
    pulseaudio --start
    That's it, now Skype, and all microphone related application will have neat audio! Thanks Archers. hope it helps.
    Is there a way to suppress fan noise in pulseaudio, cause the fan noise is bothering me now at forvo.com
    I also updated the pulseaudio wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … _Recording

  • Getting clean vocals from an xlr mic using macmice micplug

    I have a 1 ghz powerbook using FCP5 and garageband 2. I have a sennheiser ME66 mini shotgun mic. I wanted to try recording audio from my Sennheiser mic so I bought a macmice micplug (xlr to usb)
    I've tried recording audio into FCP5 and garageband, but I get a lot of noise behind the voice track.
    Has anyone used the micplug with success, getting clean professional quality audio?

    Something like this XLRmic-to-USB preamp should do the job OK.
    http://www.amazon.com/MXL-MICMATEC-Preamp-Condenser-Microphones/dp/B000VZ8WC2
    However, the ME66 is not really a voice mic - it's a directional shotgun, with too much gain for close-miked voice (but you probably know that!)

  • What XLR mic and USB interface do you recommend?

    Hello-
    I want to record vocals and acoustic guitar in GarageBand. In the future, I also plan to get an electric guitar. So I was thinking of getting a good, basic audio interface and XLR microphone to start with. My budget is about $200-300. I don't need the very best quality, just something that is good enough for home music recordings. Do you have a recommendation?
    For audio interface, I am leaning towards M-Audio's Fast Track:
    http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrack.html
    I am not sure what would be a good XLR microphone for my budget.

    If you don't need to record the guitar and vocals at the same time, you might want to check out the Apogee One.
    Also, FWIW, you might prefer a condenser over a dynamic mic for vocals and acoustic guitar (depending on the style of vocals).

  • Questions on recording multiple mics at once

    Does garage band 3 support recording x amount of mics at once to their own track provided the correct firewire hardware is used?
    Example can I record a kick, snare, and 2 over head mics all at once and then go back an edit what each mic recorded or will it all be mixed down into one track?

  • Recording from Mic Truncated

    Hi,
    I'm recording from a mic into a memory buffer. All works fine, except that it always cuts off the last second even though I believe I'm properly draining the target data line before closing it.
    I've tested with the AudioRecorder and SimpleAudioRecorder from the [url http://www.jsresources.org/examples/audio_playing_recording.html]JResources examples and a few other [url http://www.quadmore.com/swingrecorder/]examples out there. They seems to suffer from the same issue.
    Is this just a matter of some sort of latency when the recording is shut down?
    Here are the controlling methods for my recorder.
    public void startRecording()
       state_ = State.RUNNING;
       line_.start();
       thread_ = new Thread()
          public void run()
             recordLoop();
       thread_.start();
    private void recordLoop()
       while(state_ != State.STOPPED)
          int bytesRecorded = line_.read(block_, 0, blockSize_);
          if(bytesRecorded != 0)
             out_.write(block_, 0, bytesRecorded);
    public void stopRecording() throws Exception
       line_.stop();
       line_.drain();
       state_ = State.STOPPED;
       thread_.join();
    }I'm running jdk 1.6.0_22-b04 on Windows XP.
    Thanks for any ideas!!!

    Seems to work so I'm happy. Maybe its specific to my recording setup?Ummmm, the "one second" is probably specific to your recording setup... but I would imagine there is a delta_t associated with starting a recording and the recording starting.
    I'd imagine the TDL drain should handle that, but if there's like a hardware buffer on the soundcard that Java just doesn't have permission to flush... then you'd have to handle that yourself as you have. If the soundcare or the OS is doing some real-time transcoding to give JavaSound data in the format it wants, for instance, there could be a hidden unflushable buffer...

  • Audio Recording, from Mic to computer

    Good Peoples,
    I thought that plugging a mic into the mini port on the computer would work for using and external mic. I switched from internal to external in under system preferences but nothing is picked up. The internal mic works. Anyone know about this?
    Much Thanks,
    Jackson

    I had a similar problem with an external microphone that didn't need power supply. I checked the source on the sound of the system preferences, and whenever I had the microphone attached, no sound was being input, only sound picked up when I had the internal microphone selected.
    This summer for a class project, I thought it was picking up sound while I was recording a movie, using iSight, and when i finished, all i had was the video with no audio. Then I had to re-do the class project.
    Did your problem ever get resolved? If so, what did you end up doing to resolve it?

  • What gear do I need?  (to record vocal mic and iPod)

    HELP
    I have a powerbook and I am running a vocal mic and an iPod with some karaoke tracks on it through a Yamaha Stage Pass system and I want to record into garageband, then import it to iTunes and email the mp3 files to some friends and family.
    what gear will I need to be able to keep my setup the same (it has an RCA port for a recording device) and just run it straight to my powerbook and garageband?????
    thanks!

    Hi tooch,
    welcome to the forum!!
    If you have a line out on your yamaha, then all you need is a cable to plug into the macs's line-in.
    if it has seperate 1/4'' left and right outs, you'll need to get a "y" cable that has two mono 1/4'' TS plugs into a stereo 1/8'' TRS plug. Radioshack has them.
    Good luck tooch!!

  • Quarter-inch female to a 3.55mm male to connect guitar to my Ipod Touch 4th gen. It still records from mic and not from wire.

    Hey everyone, I recently bought a quarter-inch female to a 3.55mm male to connect my acoustic electric guitar to my Ipod Touch 4th gen. Now when I connect it, it doesn't actually take the sound from the wire, it still keeps the mic open. Any suggestions?

    You can try putting the iPod into Recovery Mode and restoring it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
    If that doesn't work, then sorry but the jailbreak may have permanently corrupted your iPod. Since we cannot help with jailbroken devices in these forums, you'll need to look elsewhere for additional suggestions and advice.

  • Live Recording with mics and Software Instruments

    Has anyone used the Software Instruments in GB to play live, while recording the Software Instruments direct and live (Real Instruments) as well?
    I'm thinking about getting a FirePod or similar, to record my band live using several mics and playing and recording Software Instruments all at once. I'm concerned that this set up might have too much latency and make the Software Instruments not playable with my band live, and perhaps all this might make my iMac G5 bog down.
    Anyone have any experiences with any or all of this kind of use of GarageBand with an audio/MIDI interface?
    iMac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hey Hang,
    Sorry if I'm talking in circles. That post was early!
    I'd like to be able to use the built-in Software Instruments live and record that MIDI as well as the live tracks at the same time. However, I could deal with using my own keyboards for the live sounds and just record the MIDI from them while recording the live tracks too, if that makes the system work. For instance, if the part I wanted was a piano, and the Software Instrument piano used too much processor power, I could "record" with a smaller instrument that wasn't such a hog. Then, in mixing, I'd use the Software Instrument I wanted for the keyboard part. Live, my real keyboard could provide the piano for all to hear.
    Am I making sense yet?
    I suppose one thing I could do is something I was thinking of doing already. I could get one of the $40 MIDI-to-USB interfaces to record with the band. Right now, I'm just using a stereo mic set up to record stereo into GB. I could add MIDI and see what happens. Heck, I could enable 6 more real instrument tracks at the same time and see what happens! Then I would know it was possible on the iMac at least.
