Looking to Switch from Dell Laptop to MacBook Pro

I currently use a Dell Laptop at home for personal and work. I have to use outlook, excel and word alot. I also have to use the internet. If I go with the MacBook Pro which one do you recommend? If I don't have a wireless router can I use me aircard?

The Openreach engineer may/will just bypass the xNTE and fit a new master socket. He should fit this where you want. It may be possible to turn one of your phone sockets into the new master socket. Obviously you will need to discuss the best options with the engineer.
If the modem can not be installed in the extension room and you are prepared to run Ethernet cable outside using CAT6 you will not get any drop in speed up to 100 meters so you could have your Homehub router in your ground floor extension. This would be a better option than powerline adaptors, which as you have found do loose speed.
If you have to use Powerline adaptors then make sure they are at least the 500Mbps ones and preferably 1Gbps one.

iTunes movies no longer sync from Dell laptop or MacBook Pros (both authorized devices) to iPhone 6s or iPad Air 2s after configured at Apple store yesterday.  In the past I could see the movies in iTunes with the cover photo and sync to the other devices but now there is a listing a movies with no cover photos and in fact if I try to view the movie on the MacBook Pro it cannot be found unless I download it.

All I had to do was complain.  I synced my iPhone to the Windows machine, checked the other account at iTunes prompting (where no apps had shown up previously), reconnected the iPad, and 140 apps downloaded including the App Store.  I have no idea why.

  • Switch from Quad G5 to MacBook Pro??

I use my Quad G5 for semi-pro photo work - Nikon Raw images processed in Aperture. Due to space and mobility issues, I am considering moving from the Quad G5 to a 17" MacBook Pro C2D. Along with the photo work, I use the Quad for correspondence (MS-Office suite), record keeping, and on-line research.
I use a Lacie 500GB external drive for storage, so the 160GB drive on the MBP C2D is not an issue.
I know it's early in the life of the MBP C2D - but by chance has anyone made a similar move; i.e., switching from a Quad G5 to a MBP C2D? If so, what were your observations - pro and con? My PowerBook G4 is a very nice machine, but it can't handle Aperture. I would like the mobility of the PowerBook, combined with the power of the Quad G5.
Thanks for any thoughts and observations.

I agree there would be a bigger performance gap between the MBP and mac pro.. but seeing as you are asking about the G5 quad, not the mac pro which is a quad xeon, the fastest new MBP actually comes off pretty well in the comparison. my MBP 17" is a new core 2 duo one, and I was surprised at how much faster it is than the dual G5 I have. I expected it to be maybe a tiny bit more capable, but it's actually well and truly faster. real time audio plug ins that I use in logic indicate a far lower CPU usage than the same thing on the dual G5.
also, earlier this year I was at an apple briefing (for audio pros) so we had a comparison station set up with a quad G5 vs the first MBP that had come out. they had the same big project running on both machines, in logic, using a lot of CPU and RAM intensive live plug ins playing an orchestral arrangement synced to a DV res H264 video file, all running off the internal drive. the quad G5 showed a little less CPU use, but only just the tiniest amount less.
anyway this is not the same as someone giving you impressions from aperture, but it was a good way of seeing that these machines are up there in performance.
honestly the biggest concern you should have is about the screens on the MBPs. lots of people are reporting that the quality is hit and miss, and I agree. it looks to me like apple have done some cost cutting and are shipping lower quality screens on these machines than in the top of the range powerbooks of the past. I knew there had to have been a tradeoff what with the laptops being so cost competitive today. the machine I just received is great, but the screen definitely has brighter areas, like the backlighting is not totally consistent across the whole display. maybe it will settle down, but if I were a user that depends on accurate colour, contrast and brightness, I'd be on the phone to apple demanding some answers and a replacement.

  • Migrating from Windows laptop to Macbook Pro - HELP

How do I keep my current iTunes settings/music/phone backup/etc. when going from my Windows laptop to my new Macbook Pro? I moved the "itunes" folder to replace the one on the new Mac but itunes didn't recognize that it was there...The main thing I want to keep is my phone settings/purchases. Please help. Thanks!

These directions tell you how to move your iTunes library from one computer to another computer. While they talk about using an iPod, if you ignore that part & follow the directions, you'll be OK:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1329
Or, you could make an appointment at an Apple store, take both computers & your phone, and the geniuses will do everything for you, make sure all is working properly & explain everything to you. There is no cost for this service.

  • Move music 'online' from Dell iTunes to MacBook Pro itunes?

I am in England with a MacBook pro. My iTunes library is in America on a Dell with Windows Vista. My iPod doesn't have any of my music as I somehow deleted it. How can someone in America 'send' me my music from my Dell so that I can use it on my MacBook here in England? Thanks so much! (Free ideas preferred!)

Just copy the complete Library system over to the Mac and then when starting iTunes on the Mac hold down the Option key and a dialog window will open asking which Library to use. Select the Library you copied over from the Dell.

  • Long delay between switching from internal - external speakers MacBook Pro 13

    Hey,
Ive got a MacBook Pro 13" (2011) on lion 10.7.4 and I have experienced recent problems with a switch from internal to expernal speakers and vice versa. For example, Im on itunes listening to a song or watching a video on youtube etc and then I plug in my speakers or my headphones, the sound stops. It varies from time to time, until the music continues then, ranging from 10s to hours!
When I try to adjust the volume following things have happened on different occasions:
the volume symbol in the top bar is grey
when I try to adjust the volume with the keyboard, it either wont let me (indicating full volume and the stop sign appear on the screen) or it indicates on the screen that the volume gets changed but you cant hear anything
in the latter case, sometimes when the sound works again, I can press those buttons but the volume is stuck and doesnt respond.
Does it have to do anything with the fact that I am pretty bad at closing tabs on my browser and programmes? I wouldnt have thought so though because it didint used to be like that with the sound and my habits havent changed.
Anyeay, I eould be very happy if someone could help me out with this issue. Many thanks in advance

Thanks for taking the trouble to answer. I agree that it seems like a hw problem either with a cable or internal mounting. To help anyone else who had this sort of problem ..... there is no need to worry. I picked up the phone and called Apple. A very polite and helpful tech guy ran me through a graphics ram reset (PRAM) to see if this would fix things and said to let them know if it didn't. The problem reoccured so the machine is going back. Apple immediately arranged for the machine - no debate, no hassle - to be picked up by courier and a new one shipped back to me. I'll have it in a couple of days. That is what you call service. I'm still going to take an additional precaution though. Despite having a good cover for the machine I'm going to add additional padding in the backpack I use on a weekly commute. Note though that I never had any problems with a series of Macbooks in the decade I've been commuting across Europe (on a weekly basis).

  • Switching from PC sync to MacBook Pro Sync

I have been syncing and backing up my iPhone on my PC. I am now ready to migrate everything to my MacBook Pro (13"). I tried to sync today with the Mac but I lost part of my calendar from the iPhone and lost most of my applications. I retrieved everything by restoring from the PC, but I had to reload all of the books on my Laridian app and the Mantis app. What is the best way to migrate all of my data from the iPhone (and PC) to the Mac, without losing the apps (including books) and the calendars? I also have a number of songs and podcasts on the iPhone. Can I also migrate those at the same time or do I have to go through a different process? When I tried to migrate this morning, I checked some of the boxes that seemed appropriate, but it appears that the process wanted to replace everything on the iPhone with what was on the Mac, but there is nothing on the Mac, so it wound up replacing all of my applications with nothing (basically erasing them) and only showing the last two weeks calendar and did not migrate any of the songs or podcasts. Is there an elegant (or inelegant) solution. Harland

If you live near an Apple store, the Apple store can help you with this.
If you have copy to iTunes media folder and keep iTunes content organized selected for your iTunes preferences on your PC, you can copy the iTunes named folder which is located in your Music folder which I believe is located in the Documents folder on a PC.
With iTunes quit on your Mac, place the copy of the iTunes named folder in your Music folder.
You need to authorize your Mac with your iTunes account with iTunes if you haven't already done so.
Before syncing contacts with the Address Book and calendar events with iCal on your Mac, enter one contact in the Address Book and one calendar event in iCal on your Mac. Make these up if needed, which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.
You can transfer photos from your PC to your Mac and use iPhoto to import the photos. You can use iPhoto to import photos from any digital camera including from your iPhone's Camera Roll.

  • Switching from PC laptop to MacBook--what about iTunes and iPod

I've been using a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop for a couple of years, and have an iTunes account and a 60G iPod video set up to sync with it.
But now I'm getting a MacBook laptop and will get rid of the PC laptop.
    Big questions loom:
    - I set my iPod up for Windows. How do I change the setup to Mac?
    - How do I move my iTunes library from the PC to the Mac?
    - What else do I need to know?
    Thanks!

When you connect your iPod to the new MacBook it won't automatically erase it. Instead you'll be told the iPod is synced to a different computer and ask if you want to sync it to the MacBook. Click on cancel. Your iPod isn't erased.
Now head over to your favorite download site versiontracker.com is good and search on 'iPod'. You'll find several freeware and shareware programs that'll transfer your songs to the MacBook. Use one.

  • Just switching from a PC to MacBook Pro - question about Safari display

    Hi,
I am sorry for such a simple question, but if anyone has a moment... we have the new 15 inch laptop, but when accessing a website, the display does not fill up the whole screen. In other words, I can still see quite a bit of the background (wallpaper?) and it just seems to me that it could fill up the screen more than it is. The website doesn't matter - Yahoo, Apple, all the sites are displaying at the same size. Is there a way to adjust this? Thanks.

Grab the title bar and drag the window to the upper left, then grab the bottom right corner of the Safari window and drag it larger.
Alternatively, click the green dot at the upper left - that's a bit different than the Windows 'maximize' in that in Mac OS X, that button enlarges the window in a content-sensitive manner (i.e. makes it large enough to display the full content of the window, within the limit of your monitor). That means that, depending on the web page, the window may fill the screen vertically, horizontally, both, or neither (it will leave space for the Dock, though).
    Hope that helps...

  • Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/
Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

  • Run two monitors from my 15-inch MacBook Pro (Non-retina, mid 2012)?

I'm looking to run two monitors from my 15-inch MacBook Pro (Non-retina, mid 2012). I don't want to use the actual laptop screen in this setup, I just want to use the two external monitors.
My 15-inch MacBook Pro (Non-retina, mid 2012) has the following ports on the side:
FireWire 800 port (up to 800 Mbps)
Two USB 3 ports (up to 5 Gbps)
Thunderbolt port (up to 10 Gbps)
I currently use the Thunderbolt port to one external monitor.
My question is: Is it better to run the second monitor via USB 3, or FireWire (if that's even possible)? What would you recommend?

    See -> http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/digital_me/.
Good and simple way to get two monitors from one Thunderbolt port.

  • Why can't I read books purchased from itunes on my macbook pro?

I find it very upsetting that books purchased from itunes on a Macbook pro can not be read on a Macbook Pro.

Many MacBook Pro users are professional authors, reseachers, teachers, ... and we need to manage large libraries of copy protected digital material (journals, book collections, protected imagery, ...) , which we directly reference and include (with citations) in our writing and analyses.
Laptops and desktops are the only viable options in terms of screen real estate (multiple monitors needed), application availability (image analytics, serious statistics, real 2D and 3D modeling, ...) high speed storage attachment (the cloud can't handle many needs) and processing horse power. iPads and iPhones are a few generations away from being adequate for many such activities, which Apple had traditionally supported.
This particular oversight by the  folks behind the Apple iTunes bookstore business, stands in stark contrast to what used to be our vision of the premier professional creative platfom. I find this deeply dissappointing and inconsiderate of our long term investment in apple technologies.
Asking folks to simply abandon their investment in copy protected ebook material, purchased on iTunes, is just wrong.

  • Where can I look up the production date of my MacBook Pro?

does anyone have an idea, where I can look up the production date of a MacBook Pro? I can't remember when I bought it...

Try this site as well. Paste in your Macs serial number and it will reveal all kinds of info about it including exactly where is was assembled. You can get the serial number from System Profiler. Cheers!
