Looking to upgrade 2 GHz Intel Core Duo system if possible

I have a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo 2 GB memory system, Bus speed 667 MHz. Running Mac OS X 10.6.8. Is there any way possible to upgrade the system? Also having trouble with viewing videos from web sites.

Had hard drive failure on MacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, so had to rebuild the OS on new drive. Was on Lion 10.7.5 prior to failure, but had to reinstall Snow Leopard 10.6.3 since that was most recent OS on media I had. After finally getting ethernet connection to router working, was able to get to internet and download / upgrade to 10.6.8. I assume I can probably buy the upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8 from there.
Problem is this, Airport will not stop self-assigning IP address for my wireless connection, and unless I can get wireless back on this laptop, doesn't make a lot of sense to continue the rebuild and reinstall of all the software that was on it prior to HD failure. Only way to my home network and router is ethernet now. Everything else on my network (Apple MacBook Pro laptops, iPhones, desktops, and non-Apple printers and laptops) is hooking up to router wirelessly fine.
Any ideas how to resolve successfully so that the airport will stop self-assigning and allow the router to assign the IP address?

Please could someone tell me if I can upgrade my MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo/ 2 GB SDRAM running 10.6.8 to Lion as I need it to run some 2015 software ?
IF I can, what are the dangers I must look for and will my laptop then be even slower than it is now?

I too am very happy with my 2006 MBP however with the introduction of HDTV, the 2006 MBP was not up to the task. That resulted in the purchase of the 2010 17" MBP because I needed that capability. Technological change does often require newer and better equipment. As I have alluded to, I still use the 2006 with great pleasure.
I have also purchased a late 2011 17" MBP which I feel is a slightly better machine than the 2010. The 2011 has SATA3 internal interface whereas the 2010 has SATA2. What this means is that the 2011 MBP can utilize the full potential of current SSDs whereas the 2010 cannot. Do not misunderstand, an SSD in a 2010 will still be a significant performance enhancement. Also a 2011 MBP will accept up to 16GB RAM (also at 1600 MHz) whereas the 2010 can only utilize 8GB RAM (the 2010 13' model being an exception). The 2011 MBPs also have slightly better GPUs than the 2010.
On the plus side for the 2010 MBP, it is more energy efficient than the 2011. In other words, longer battery run time.
The 2011 MBP has a quadcore CPU which is not the great advance that some may lead you to believe. It shines only when a given application can utilize the parallel processing that it affords. Though not as critical, do opt for the fastest CPU available if there is a choice.
I like the 17" displays in the newer MBPs (late 2008 and newer) due to the 1980 x 1200 resolution. That is compatible with HDTV. The retina display are nice, but not nice enough to warrant my purchase of a 15" model.
Both my 2010 and late 2011 MBPs will run any applications that a newer MBP will, but perhaps not quite as fast. Neither is obsolete, yet.

I have an old iMac about that age that I upgraded to Lion to test my 3rd party applications for compatibility. It upgraded quite simply. Please backup or save all your info/etc to an external CD/DVD/Hard drive, then try to run the installer. The Lion installer will analize your Mac for compatibility before it does anything, and will alert you to it's decisision. My 17" iMac is also 2 GHZ Intel core duo. Surprisingly for many of the things I use it for it works as good as my multi thousand dollar MacPro workstation. Best of luck. But Lion isn't compatible with many third party applications and drivers for printers; scanners; etc.

Apple keep telling me I need to update to icloud but I'm not sure if Lion will work on my Mac. If you have a Core Duo model then you cannot upgrade to Lion. You can upgrade to Snow Leopard, but iCloud is not available for Snow Leopard.
Open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. Look for the Model ID in the displayed information. If you have a MacBookPro 2,1 or later then you have a Core 2 Duo model and can upgrade to Lion.

Your tems are fine, nothing at all to worry about. One thing you can do is shut down the computer, remove the RAM plate cover on the bottom and vacuum out the air intake. As for the spinning beach balls that isn't a freeze it means a process is busy. You can run Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and when you begin getting SBBOD look in AM and see if you see any processes using a large %CPU and also click the System Memory tab and look to see how much FREE RAM is available at that point in time. As a general rule of thumb OS X likes to have 500MB or more of FREE RAM, if you see it's at or below 500MB then a RAM upgrade is needed or you need to reduce the amount of open windows. My thanks to you and all other respondents. In backing up "theVault" App I thought that my ancient version of Stuffit was inadequate to unzip the backup file. I attempted to download the latest Zipit version which only works with Lion. After upgrading to Stuffit 9 I realized that theVault backup file was encrypted so as to not open on the backup Mac. One must restore to the iPhone where is does open.
My apologies for the imprecise post. I am finding limitations with not being able to install Lion on my early MacBook Pro. I can recommend theVault to those looking for a password App with secure backup.
