Looking to Upgrade 2003 to 2008R2

We have 5 small sites, that have each (2) 1U 2003 SP2 servers. The services that run on 2003 is a DC and the other server is DHCP and Print Services. File shares and home directories are located at the main office server.
So now I would like to go down to one server for each site, and run instead of a DC just a RODC and print services and DHCP. Also maybe a local common share folder.
My question is I should be able to get away doing this with Windows 2008 R2 Standard, correct? This will happen over a weekend where I shutdown 2003 server bring up the new server and rename the new 2008 the same name as the 2003. In renaming the
server, can I setup RODC service before the renaming or after I rename the new 2008 server?

Well I going down to 1 new server for the remote sites. That's why I figure I go with RODC and not a DC.
The other question is running RODC and print services and DHCP. Also maybe a local common share folder. That should be fine to run all together on a 1U new hardware.

  • Upgrade 2003 site to 2008R2

    Hi,
I have a windows AD forest with 2 sites. One of the site (HQ primiary site) i have already upgraded to windows 2008R2. The remining branch office site which is site2, i have single domain controller windows 2003. What is the best and fastest way to
get it also 2008 and turn all the forest be 2008 AD?
Can I upgrade the site2 server in-place upgrade? I was installed this server (2003) through IFM (install from media) method. Is there any special procedure to upgrade this server to 2008?
Helpful advise is much appreciated. Thanks.

The main thing is to ensure that your services are migrated over.   DNS, DHCP, certificate services, any FSMO roles, global catalog. There are a few guides out there such as
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755937(v=ws.10).aspx but none may hit everything you need.
Basically, I'd build a new 2008R2 box and promote it to DC status.
If the old server was a global catalog server, I'd make sure this one is too.
If the old server hosted DNS, I'd install that on the new server as well.
If the old server hosted DHCP, I'd either recreate the scope if it's simple or migrate it and decommission the scope on the 2003 box:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/networking/archive/2008/06/27/steps-to-move-a-dhcp-database-from-a-windows-server-2003-or-2008-to-another-windows-server-2008-machine.aspx  and
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962355
If FSMO roles exist on the 2003 box, I'd move them over as well.
Change the DHCP scope to reflect the new server as a DNS server if needed.
Change the IP of any server/printer/device that may use the old server for DNS.
Move any remaining software, file shares or services to the new server.
Use DCPromo to remove Active Directory from the 2003 server, and remove from the domain.

  • Raising Functional level - From 2003 to 2008R2

Recently I have completed the AD upgrade from 2003 to 2012. Now all sites have 2012 DCs only. Next i plans to raise the functional level of both Forest and Domain from 2003 t0 2008R2.
I want to know the things to take care before doing this upgrade.

    hi,
if you are only using 2012 DC's that you may want to go straight to 2012 functional level. The functional level change is generally classed as low impact and simply tells AD it can use all it's additional features.
There is no real roll back if any issues are caused during or after the change, so you need to ensure you have full backups and are aware of the forest recovery process. Make sure you have spoken to all your software vendors whose software integrates with
AD before doing the change to ensure that it won't affect the running of this software.
There is a very good article here from the MS Directory team on the process and the impact.

Since your Mac probably came with 10.4, there is no longer a way to get 10.5 Leopard install media. IF it has the requirements, you may be able to upgrade to 10.6 Snow Leopard by buying the boxed install media at the Apple Store for $30.

  • Looking to upgrade stock 232gb hard drive

From what I can tell, I have a MacBook Pro (black keys, >2008 model) with the following:
    Capacity: 232.89 GB
    Model: FUJITSU MJA2250BH FFS G1
I am looking to upgrade to a larger hard drive (preferably 1tb, but ~750gb is alright too) as this one is filling up quickly.
I do a lot of photoshop/lightroom work on large files (sometimes larger than 100mb) so I'm guessing I want something fast (7200 rpm?). I have 4gb of Ram installed right now, if that makes a difference.
Can anyone reccomend a good hard drive for me? Also, how difficult (as far as tools, technical expertise, etc) would it be for me to install a new hard drive by myself?
    Thanks for the help.

Hybrids include a small SSD that helps speed data transfers increasing the overall throughput of the drive about 10-20% over that of a standard equivalent drive. Go with Seagate or Hitach for drives. I'm not a big lover of WD because too many of their products are not very compatible with Macs.
Your computer is probably out of warranty, but if not then no. It's DIY in the later MBPs. But if you have to do a semi-disassembly (it's not plug and forget) then any damage you may do will not be covered under the warranty.

  • I am looking to upgrade to a new iPhone.  Is it possible to then disable the phone capabilities of my old phone so I can give it to my teen for use as an iTouch?  or does the old iPhone just become unusable which would be such a waste.

  • Looking to upgrade the video card and power supply in the K330

Hello, I'm looking to upgrade the power supply and video card in the Lenovo IdeaCentre K330 but I need to know if these parts will be accepted by the mobo.
Here's the card name (no link, don't know if theres a restriction to off site links) ASUS 2GB GDDR5 DIGI+ VRM technology Graphics Cards HD7770-2GD5
The power supply name follows: Xion High Performance 1000 Watt ATX Power Supply XON-1000P14F
Thanks for reading, and extra thanks for a good reply

Thanks for replying, I have looked into other PSU's and came up with this: XFX PRO750W Core Edition 80+ Bronze ATX 750 Energy Star Certified Power Supply
Feedback? And main question is, will they both (video card and PSU) be compatible with the motherboard that come standard in the K330?
I don't really have a need for the front panel except the power, and backontrack buttons.
Also, the reason why I'm getting a high wattage PSU is because I might later decide to build my own PC with the upgraded parts, and put the old parts back into the K330

  • Looking to upgrade to CS5 from CS3

HI everyone! I'm looking to upgrade to CS5 from CS3 Master Collection. Is there an easy way of doing this? I have zero interest in anything cloud related or CS6. thanks so much in advance!

As said by Brett already, you can no longer get CS5 or below from Adobe.
If by any chance, you make your mind to get CS6, Here is where you can get it. Creative Suite 6

  • Looking to upgrade (finally), but first...(about port forwardig)

I've got a (fairly) old Airport Extreme (Snow) base station. Most of the computers around the house are new enough to have the "n" airport cards in them, so I'm looking to upgrade to a new base station that support this.
One of the pet peeves I've had for a while is that the base station that I currently have (snow) gives you extremely limited possibilities for forwarding public ports to specific machines. It limits you to 20. If you try to enter in 21 ports to forward to any particular machine, it gives an error and will not let you reboot the station.
Does the current Airport Extreme Base Stations have this same limitation? If not, I'll just buy a different wireless router that does and pay the couple of bucks Apple charges to unlock the wireless card instead.
Has anyone been able to forward more than 20 ports to their computer using the current base station?

I've got a (fairly) old Airport Extreme (Snow) base station.
You either have a 802.11b dual-Ethernet (aka snow) AirPort base station (ABS) OR an 802.11b/g round AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). The snow ABS and AEBS are totally different animals.
    KB 107908, Identifying AirPort hardware
The new AEBS allows ranges of ports to be forwarded which makes life simpler. I also believe that the limit of 20 no longer exists.

Sounds just like what was happening with my Alum MB. I took it in and they replaced my battery. It seems to be ok now. I don't know what it is, but my battery was fine before 10.5.6 and the same timeframe of the firmware updates when they came out.
My battery health was jumping around but was fine before all of this happened. Unfortunately at 381 cycles I don't think you have much chance of getting the battery for free. Perhaps you can complain about the battery saying it was fine until 10.5.6 or whatever. Not sure when your computer was made, but perhaps you are eligible for this program: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

  • I have an HP Pavilion M8200N DeskTop looking to upgrade it?

I was doing some reason and its not a bad desktop, nothing super crazy but good enough for most of my video editing and photo work. Im looking to upgrade it as the only thing laking is the video card. So can you please tell me what the best video card is to get without upgrading my power supply and spending huge cash, but still a graphics card. As well a link to ram, how much should i put in extra?
Maybe cheap add ons that will help as well! thanks

Here are the specs for the MCP61PM-HM (Nettle2) motherboard installed in your computer. Here is the "Software & Driver Downloads" page for your computer. Your computer is a 64-bit system running a 32-bit Windows Vista OS. HP provides drivers and software for Vista 64-bit for your computer. If you wish to install the maximum 8GB that your computer can use, you will need to replace the 32-bit OS with a 64-bit OS. If you made your HP Recovery Discs, you can use them to install most of the included HP software back on the computer after installing Vista 64-bit. A quick search on this forum should return a method to get a Vista 64-bit installation disc.
