Lookout causing system file size growth in W2000

When running Lookout 4.5 my WINNT/system32/config/system file is growing. The file should be around 2 to 3 MB but has grown to over 6 MB in just 4 days. Previously when this file got to 20 mb the system fried and had I to redo the above mentioned system file to original and also reinstall Lookout 4.5. I am afraid I am headed back to the same place. What is the problem?
Thanks for your input.
Dave

Dave,
I do not know why should Lookout increase the system hive when Lookout is running regularly with a process application.
The only part Lookout is somehow related to the system hive is during installation. Lookout installer register its services (LKAds, LKCitadel, LKTime, and in Lookout 5 probably Lookout used as NT Service). This installation would increase the system hive a little bit. However, I've installed Lookout 5 and 4.5.1b18 and my system hive is as you said around 2-3 MB and I have not seen it growing when I was using Lookout.
If you could reproduce and see that this system file is growing it might be interessting to know if you do something special in your process application. (E.g. DDE Exchange, OPC Servers...).
Let me know if you attache an exampl
e that reproduces the system hive grow.
Regards
Roland
PS: More about this growing file: e.g.: http://scilnet.fortlewis.edu/tech/NT-Server/registry.htm#Hives
PPS: If you encounter this problem - for sure it would be good to know why - but maybe you could increase the registry max file setting thus the system would not freeze - or what do you mean by "fried", a crash (Would you have a stack dump?)

  • File size growth fr Aperture to Photoshop and back. Why?

When i take a 15Mb file from Aperture to Photoshop, work on it in photoshop them save back into Aperture its grown to about 56MB back in Aperture, BUT why when i open the Adjustments HUD for this new file in Aperture does it make a new copy of the image and make it 150MB size in Aperture.

This is because Aperture converts the file to a TIFF wrapped as a PSD file to import to photoshop, which gives you the initial size increase. When photoshop saves the file, it is also saving (in the PSD) any layers you have created, so several layers will increase the size of the file several times.
Nothing wrong with Aperture - just a fact of life when storing native Photoshop files (PSDs) to disk - they're huge!
    Hope that helps.
    Dave.

  • On exponential file size growth

I can see why they've done this. The presentation is far more portable if the images are embedded in the .key file. No-one has to keep track of file locations, relative paths, etc. Though for those of us who prefer another image editing tool keynote should have a pref to embed or not; and in the case of not should maintain a live link to referenced media files. I suspect this embedded tif generation is what's causing problems with QT mov playbacks.
I've found that doing "Save As...." seems to force keynote to ditch redundant internal tiffs thereby making for a smaller .key file.

Well, that certainly explains why a Pages test I sent Brian had blossomed to 8M with only six photos. I had used the adjustment tool on one and it went from a 988k photo to a 'filtered' tiff that was 7.3M.
That's quite a bit of hard drive realestate used up for something that should be fairly small.
I had thought that the Adjustments were non-destructive, and I guess they are. I had originally thought they would only be done 'on the fly' using a bit of the Core Image goodies in 10.4, but it appears a completely new photo is being generated, with somewhat greedy tendancies.
Send this to feedback so they know about it. There should definitely be an option to save as a jpeg instead of as a tiff.
    Just ran a test.
Dragging an image and saving the presentation resulted in one image in the file.
Adjusting it and saving it resulted in two files, one 7 times as large saved as a tiff.
Resettign the adjustment pane and closing it, and saving it resulted in two images still.
Deleting the image and saving got rid of both files.
Dragging the image in again and saving it gave only one file. I deselected the 'resize images to fit on slide', just in case. (That used to generate large tiffs as well)
There is seriously something wrong with this. I honestly thought that it did it's image manipulations on the fly as the slide was displayed. In fact I was hoping it did that. What I do know is that if an image has an adjustment applied, and is then turned into a placeholder image (makes it easy to add a replacement image) the replacement image will be retain the adjustment. I guess this is only a potential problem with Pages, since Keynote does not use placeholder images.
More play is required before figuring this out.

  • Cut and pasting clips to a new movie causes 15x file size increase!!

I'm using 6.04 iMovie. I'm converting 8mm analog video via Canopus 300 into imovie. These movies were of an action sport and very few clips are over ten minutes when imported.
I have 4 files(sourced from 4 tapes) from 22-28GB in imovie. I have edited these files, removing bad video, unwanted scenes and have added transitions and titles. The resulting files are each from 22-28Gb's in size.
I then went to make a highlight video by copying and pasting clips from two of the movies. The resulting highlight movie exceeds 160Gb's I have two more movies to past clips from!
I am aware of the "non-destructive" editing feature of Imovie. In the process of editing the individual movies and putting together the highlight movie I emptied trash frequently.
    My questions:
1.) What is the best procedure to cut and paste clips from movies to make a highlight movie?
2.) What can i do with my highlight video to get the size back down to around 15 Gb's? (I've only used about 25% of each of the two first tapes in the highlight video)
    Thanks

    Hello, Scott,
iMovie moves clips to the trash that you have deleted.....if you are not using any part of that clip. If you are using any part of it, the parts you crop out, 'delete,' will be removed from your movie, but not put into trash and not removed from iMovie's project file. If you use 10 seconds of a 30 second clip, for example, but later decide that you really need to have more than the 10 seconds, say you need 15 seconds, all you have to do is go click on that 10 second clip in your movie and then go to 'Advanced' and select 'Revert clip to original' and iMovie will put back the entire clip for you to re-crop.
It is not exactly the same for still photos. If you are using still photos with the Ken Burns effect, emptying the trash will remove the photo's 'clip' and you will not be able to redo the KB effect if you decide to change it. Leaving the trash alone will permit iMovie to retrieve the photo so that you can make those edits. Some of us never empty the trash in iMovie.
When you export as Full quality Quick Time, you are getting just that.....Full Quality, no changes from the original. Your movie is not being compressed, it is shortened because you are saving only the clips that are actually used in the movie, not all the rest. Nothing is lost in quality and you can edit as usual, except for the ability to retrieve any clips that are not in the movie. You will not be able to use the 'Revert clip to original,' now because you have a new set of 'originals.'
So, when you export to quicktime, be sure that you are completely finished with the cropping of your clips and that you will not need to add anything that you previously deleted. I export to quicktime and then open a new iMovie and import the new qt movie into that. Once you see that it plays properly, you can delete the first iMovie and just work with this one. However, it will come in as one large clip, with audio and video incorporated into one track. You will not be able to re-edit titles and effects. (Well, you CAN do it a bit, but it is tricky and you will lose some footage).
I actually make a quicktime version of almost all of my iMovies. I find that this process eliminates any jerkiness or stuttering of my longer movies. I edit the original iMovie by cropping clips, adding photos, putting in titles and transitions. I then add audio last, usually first some short audio clips to go with some of the photos, and then I add background music last. I usually export to quicktime during the adding music part, whenever iMovie starts playing back in a stuttering way. The new quicktime movie is smooth and I can finish my music additions easily.
Apparently, the latest version of quicktime is much better for the jerkiness problem, but I have been hesitant to upgrade since I am in the midst of doing about 4 iMovies.
    Good luck with your project!

  • Setting up PDF filing system - file size woes

We are using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro to scan our hard copy filing into the system. I have sussed out how we are going to do it, and build an index etc. What I am a little confused about is how big I should expect these documents to be. If I scan a single letter in, using Grey Scale (which I think looks better than black and white), the document comes out at about 450Kb. If I then optomise it, it almost halfs in size. However, if I adjust the settings on the grey scall preset to get it to scan at about 200Kb, the quality is quite bad.
Can anyone advise me on the best way, to scan documents that we want to have soft copy, and be able to print off if required. We don't need them to look like they are originals, but dont want them to look like they have been copied in a fax machine.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Gordon Robb

450 KB per page or hallf that size you got with optimization is not bad. You are not going to get good greyscale documents that look like the original by cutting the size any further. If you want it to look the best and be good for OCR if you need that later, I'd recommend you make sure that you scan to TIFF and import the tiff or get your scanning software to do the equivalent.

  • VI revision history numbers match, but file sizes differ.

    Hi all,
I am using LabView 7.0.  I am trying to create a utility that compares the VIs on two different computers to make sure that the VIs distributed on both systems are the same.  I tried accessing the Revision History number to compare the two files, but the execution was very slow because it is remotely opening VIs to access the property node and I am analyzing 100's or thousands of files.  I then tried to compare the files by file size using the File/Directory Info.vi and noticed that many of the files that had the same revision history number had different file sizes.  What may be causing these file size differences when the revision numbers indicate that they are the same?  I do not believe that anyone has modified the revision history numbers for any of the VIs manually.  Also, is there be a better method of comparing the files than what I am doing?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Thanks for your responses. I investigated the problem some more and it looks like the file size differences are caused when someone recompiles the VIs.  I used the "compare VI" utility to compare VIs with different file sizes and matching revision numbers and found zero differences.  So i ran this experiment:
    1) I then created two identicle copies of a VI, making sure that the file sizes matched.
    2) When I forced a recompile on one of them (Ctrl+Run Button) and saved the changes, the file size changed!
    3) I went through and used the "compare VI" utility to compare the two files and there were zero differences and both had the same revision number.
I guess the revision number only increments when you make some changes to the VI, becuase I did not have to change anything to get the file size to change, I just recompiled and saved.
I still have the problem of compiling a list of revision numbers however.  I am happy with the results of my VI except for how long it takes to execute.  My VI simply opens a VI reference, accesses the revision number through the property node, and closes the reference for the VI.  This is done recursively for all of the VIs in a directory on a remote computer and takes about 25min for ~500 VIs to complete.  I guess it takes so long because I am remotely opening all of those VI front panels over the network.  Comparing file sizes is much quicker (20 sec to execute) but it would be nice to have both the revision number and the file sizes to determine the state of the code on a particular machine.  Is there any other method of getting the revision number that might be quicker?
    Thanks again for your help!

  • Reduce PDF File Size - any ideas?

    Hi all,
I have a C++/C# programs that generates PDF's in Adobe Reader using Infragistics.  This is a recent change from using VS View as our old method of illustrating - we now use Infragistics.  This has resulted in our PDF File sizes almost doubling due to us now using Bookmarks within the PDFs and also having to embed the fonts.  There are some pictures used but these are already very small so they are not the issue.  I was wondering does anyone have any ideas of how we could possibly reduce the size again or any possible work arounds.
    Any help would be great.

Where do these EPS files come from Photoshop or Illustrator?
    Illustrator
There may be nothing wrong with EPS files technically, they are considered archaic in a modern workflow. Best to save as a .ai with pdf compatible file - or to save them as  PDF x4a with Illustrator Editing Capabilities enabled.
But I don't think there's any need to run out and convert all your files - perhaps keep it in mind going forward.
    Photoshop
EPS is really not the best format. If it's pure raster then PSD or TIFF would be preferred format, if it's Raster + Vector Shapes, Vector Masks, Text Layers then PDF is preferred over EPS (with photoshop editing capabilities enabled).
File sizes react differently depending on the content on the choice of compression. Heavy Vector files from Illustrator can cause Huge file sizes in PDFs.
See this article (and more importantly the comments!)
    http://indesignsecrets.com/creating-smaller-pdfs-from-a-vector-dense-book.php
If you can provide a bit more info  on your workflow and what settings you are using to save it would be great.

  • How to reduce image file size in spreadsheet

I have created a spreadsheet that contains cells with small amounts of text, and images that I brought in from the Media Browser from iPhoto. This has caused the file size to become HUGE, on the order of 234 MB. Saving it as a pdf only reduces it to 220 MB.
I have tried the Format>Image>Reduce Image File Size, as well as File>Reduce File Size, but in both cases, those options are grayed out.
What am I doing wrong? All I really want is thumbnail versions of my image files.
I don't understand what the Reduce Image File Size command would be used for, if it doesn't work for this?

When you insert a picture in a cell, it's used as a background.
To do that, the app keep it in a size allowing it to accomodate the larger cell size permitted.
If you want to get small images matching the cell size which you use, you must reduce the picture by yourself before inserting it. For instance, cells are often 72 * 16 pixels ones so you may reduce your pictures so that thir width become 72 pixels.
Of course, if the user enlarge the cell, the picture will become highly pixelated.
    Look at this example.
    In B4 is the original : 202 x 177 pixels
    In C3 is the reduced one : 72 x 63
in B2 is the reduced one in a 202 x 177 pixels cell. It's awfully pixelized
We must arbitrate between size and quality.

  • BUG: "Save and compact" increases file size by 1KB each time?

    Flash CS4
I noticed that when I do "save and compact" on a .fla file, it causes the file size to increase by 1KB each time--even when no changes were made.  Can this be fixed?

Yup. It works perfectly in CS3. Now the problem you will have is that you don't have CS3 installed. Even if you will save your files as CS3 format, you cannot (as far as i know) "save and compact" it as CS3, it will prompt that it must be converted from older version CS3 to CS4 and you end up with the same problem. Perhaps there is a setting to force CS4 to save and compact in CS3 version but i doubt it. The only way i know to solve it is save the file as CS3 format (But you will lose some XMP file info metadata, i'm not sure if that is necessary though) then close CS4, and open CS3 then "save and compact" it there. This is definitely a bug where some information might have been duplicated in the file's info or history. If you are lucky an adobe employee might be able to give you a solution to this or just confirm this bug.

  • Maximum Data file size in 10g,11g

    DB Versions:10g, 11g
OS & versions: Aix 6.1, Sun OS 5.9, Solaris 10
This is what Oracle 11g Documentation
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28320/limits002.htm
says about the Maximum Data file size
Operating system dependent. Limited by maximum operating system file size;typically 2^22 or 4 MB blocksI don't understand what this 2^22 thing is.
In our AIX machine and ulimit command show
    $ ulimit -a
    time(seconds)        unlimited
    file(blocks)         unlimited  <-------------------------------------------
    data(kbytes)         unlimited
    stack(kbytes)        4194304
    memory(kbytes)       unlimited
    coredump(blocks)     unlimited
    nofiles(descriptors) unlimited
    threads(per process) unlimited
processes(per user)  unlimitedSo, this means, In AIX that both the OS and Oracle can create a data file of any Size. Right?
What about 10g, 11g DBs running on Sun OS 5.9 and Solaris 10 ? Is there any Limit on the data file size?

How do i determine maximum number of blocks for an OS?df -g would give you the block size. OS blocksize is 512 bytes on AIX.
Lets say the db_block_size is 8k. What would the maximum file size for data file in Small File tablespace and Big File tablespace be?Smallfile (traditional) Tablespaces - A smallfile tablespace is a traditional Oracle tablespace, which can contain 1022 datafiles or tempfiles, each of which can contain up to approximately 4 million (222) blocks. - 32G
A bigfile tablespace contains only one datafile or tempfile, which can contain up to approximately 4 billion ( 232 ) blocks. The maximum size of the single datafile or tempfile is 128 terabytes (TB) for a tablespace with 32K blocks and 32TB for a tablespace with 8K blocks.

  • Making a interactive PDF from indesign, but it's too big. Tried to reduce file size in Acrobat, but

Making a interactive PDF from indesign, but it's too big. Tried to reduce file size in Acrobat, but it does not reduce file size.

Use the Optimize PDF command in Acrobat, it gives you more control. I think it's under the Advanced menu in Acrobat 9 Pro and File > Save As > Optimized PDF in Acrobat X Pro.
You might try playing around with different settings. You can also click the Audit Space button at the upper right to see if its from images or other things causing the file size problem.
Unfortunately, InDesign doesn't write interactivity in a very optimized way. You get better results with buttons, for example, creating them in Acrobat Pro and using the Duplicate command to duplicate them across multiple pages.

  • Why does dragging an imported video into a project reduce the file size by half?

I used a Canon Vixia HV40 to import 1 hour of HD video filmed using 24F and cina mode.  My import and project properties were as follows:widescreen (16x9, 24F, cinema, import size = full, original size.
The specifications for the imported file are as follows/:
    Size: 22.12GB
    Dimensons: 1920 x 1080
Codec: Apple Intermediate Codec, Linear PCM
    Color Profile: HD(1-1-1)
    Audio Channels: 2
    Total Bit Rate: 47,113
When I drag the imported file into a new project, the resulting .mov file has the following specifications:
Size: 9.67GB (approx half the size)
    Dimensions 1920 x 1080 (same)
    Codec: H.264, AAC (different)
    Color Profile: HS(1-1-1) (same)
    Audio Channels: 2 (same)
Total Bit Rate: 20,607 (approx half)
What causes the file size reduction and bit rate reduction?  Is it a result of the different codec?  Is there any corresponding loss of video quality that results from the conversion?
Thanks for your answers in advance.

Thanks a lot for your quick and detailed response!
Maximum image quality and file size are not the same thing, for a start.
Yes, but with JPG's they tend to be correlated, aren't they?
When you view a photo in iPhoto it's a composite of the original and the decisions recorded, and applied live as you view.
Oh, I always thought iPhoto makes a copy of the orginial and modfies that ...
If you want to use that photo for something then you have to export it. This make a new file with your photo in it. When you export you have a lot of options - including ones that will make the filesize bigger than the original.  This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
Ah, that is cool. That solves my problem.
If you use drag and drop from the iPhoto Window that's a form of exporting too -but you have no options there. You get the iPhoto Preview. That's a 'handy-good-enough-for-most-things version of the shot. If you want  more options use the export command.
That's what I tripped over. (I used the email feature from within iPhoto for a quick sharing ...)
    Thanks, G.

  • File Size bloating

Hi guys, hope you can help me with this issue.
I am running Designer ES version 8.2.1.5161.1.566259.
I started with a form which was 1,057KB.
I updated two variables in the Form Properties, saved the form and it was 2,227KB.
I then replaced an image in the form with another image (about 100KB larger), and saved - the form went to 3,218KB.
    Any ideas/guidance would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Keat

    Hi,
    A couple of things.
If you are generating accessibility tags and embed fonts then this will have a big effect on file size (particularly if you are using multiple fonts in a form):
Some fonts have large file sizes as well. I find Myriad Pro to be an efficient file size.
Also an earlier version of LC Designer (I can't remember which version) added multiple copies of a StyleID line thousands of times, this caused the file size to increase. If you look in the XML Source tab you are looking for blocks of "<?templateDesigner StyleID aped3?>" or similar.
This was fixed in a service pack and certainly in LC Designer ES2. If your form is opened in the newer version it automatically gets rid of the extra lines of code. Again I am not sure which version this was corrected.
When changing images try unticking the Embed Image Data before changing the image and then re-tick it when you have linked to the new image.
    Good luck,
    Niall

  • Causes of ORA-01200: actual file size of x is smaller than correct size n ?

    Hello everyone
We are running Oracle 11.2.0.3 64-bit E/E on Oracle Linux 6.2 with UEK R2 on X64.
Using Grid and ASM 11.2.0.3 and OMF names.
The database files are alll on SAN, the SAN vendor name not disclosed here to protect the innocent/guilty 8^)
I have a Test database MYDB (in NOARCHIVELOG mode) and after a normal server reboot, not a crash, the following error occured on Oracle database startup.
    srvctl start database -d MYDB
    PRCR-1079 : Failed to start resource ora.mydb.db
CRS-5017: The resource action "ora.mydb.db start" encountered the following error:
ORA-01122: database file 1 failed verification check
ORA-01110: data file 1: '+ASMDATA/mydb/datafile/system.256.787848913' <<<<<<<<<<---------------------------------------------------- Corrupt file on ASM disk, system tablespace this time
ORA-01200: actual file size of 94720 is smaller than correct size of 98560 blocks <<<<<<<<<<---------------------------------------------------- ERROR message
The ASM disks are all up and disk groups are mounted OK. The ASM protection level is EXTERNAL.
My understanding that the only proper recovery from the above error is to use RMAN Restore Database/File/Tablespace.etc (and then RMAN Recover, when in ArchiveLog mode).
I do have RMAN disk backups, so I don't need to "patch" the database to recover.
This is not my question at this point in time.
My Question is this : what are the most likely causes of such error?
Oracle Database bug? OS bug? Disk driver error? Server hardware failure (bus, memory, etc)? Or a SAN bug?
I expect that Oracle 11g R2 will always come up with the database "clean" if the server reboots or if server crashes (i.e. due to complete power failure) provided the actual storage is not physically damaged.
Our SAN vendor (no names!) says they are of the opinion that it's most likely Oracle database or Oracle Linux 6.x/UEK software bug, or probably Oracle ASM 11.2 bug.
We have opened a support call with Oracle.....
My personal experience dealing with similar database errors on more recent releases of Oracle (9i R2, 10g R2, 11g R2) and also MS-SQL 2005 and 2008 R2 suggests this kind of a problem is most likely related to errors/bugs in storage/drivers/firmware/BIOS and SAN and not likely to be a 'database' or O/S bug.
Perhaps you, good people on this forum, can share their experiences, as unbiased as you can?
    Many thanks

Ive seen Ora-1200 twice I think over the years, both times there was disk problems which led to write issues which caused file problems, youve reported no such issues on your side though so if thats actually true, Im thinking bug.
