Looks good after COMPRESSOR/lousy after BUILD

I've encoded a 15 minute MiniDV sequence using Compressor - High Quality CBR 6.8 Mbps Best Motion Estimation. Material looks beautiful. But after DVD ST 3 builds it to a VIDEO_TS directory, it looks lousy, washed out and way too bright! Any thoughts? Any way to prevent this??? What's going on?
Thanks,
Fernanda.

How are you determining that it is "washed out and way too bright?" If you are viewing it on your computer display using (for example) Apple's DVD Player then you should really set your display to an NTSC profile (or PAL) using the System Preferences -> Displays panel (switch to that profile only while checking the DVD color and brightness, switch back to your normal display calibration after you are done). If it looks too bright on your TV then you may just need to calibrate the TV using a DVD setup disc (most people tend to set their TV brightness too high).
To make everything work as it should you really need a carefully calibrated (color matched) workflow. Check you computer monitor, check your digital-to-analog converter, check your NTSC/PAL monitor, check your TV. Have you tried running a reference video end-to-end through your system? You also need to be certain that you are comparing each video sample through a similar transfer process.
Of course, you could have everything set up correctly and thus it's possible that you are suffering from different issue. But my first suggestion would be to look at all of the above.

Where are you hosting the site, how are you uploading the files and what's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand?
Adding audio files by dragging onto the web page forces the viewer to have Quicktime installed on their computer in order to be able to listen to them.  Look at the audio player options on this page of Roddy's iWeb for Musicians site: Audio Players for your Music Website.

  • M2v looks good but shows artefacts after build

    Hello everybody,
I have a rather strange problem with some mpeg files.
    - I exported movies from fcp as DVfiles (footage was also shot in DV)
    - I used compressor 3.01 to make MPEG2 m2v's
    - with 2pass VBR and 6.9 MBit/s
    - I am using ac3 audio with 384kHz (5.1)
The footage looks good in DVSP
The footage looks good in QT (7.2.0) and any other "player" on the MAC
    BUT
it has some more or less bad looking blocks / artefacts showing after I built the project and watch it with the apple dvd player.
    What am i missing here?
    Thanks for any advice!
    Timo

Hello, yes I am playing it at normal size. No fullscreen.
It really seems to be an "Apple DVD Player" problem, i tried with and without de-interlacing, removing all sorts of quicktime components (because i thought sth might interrupt the playback) and such but it is still the same.
(But it looks good on TV and -I hardly dare to say it- a fairly old windows laptop)
Well. maybe someone is more into the tech stuff and knows something else.
Thanks a lot for your help anyway.
    Cheers,

  • HDCam 1080i to ???? for PC and still look good compressed?

Client has asked for 1280x720 compressed in a codec that a PC can read via After Effects. Eventually they want to go to Flash. Their source is HDCam 1080i.
I've captured via FCP 6/AJA Kona LHe in Apple 10bit 4:2:2 Uncompressed, then let Compressor 3.0.1 turn it into Animation codec and H.264 in order to give them a file size they can work with. The H.264 and the Animation file look like the field order is messed up. But Compressor's frame control is set to Automatic and when it isn't it wants to deinterlace and take 2 hours or more to render a 5 second clip. I've got almost twenty minutes of material to process so that isn't a real world workflow.
They've come to me as a service bureau to give them a file they can work with. I just can't figure out what kind of file would work. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the compression I've used or is this just state of the art for Compressor?
Look at some screen grabs of the original and the resultant H.264 (the animation codec has the same jaggy/zipper/comb effect on the edges. Look at the edge of the car and their clothes, etc.)
    http://www.countdownvideoproductions.com/jaggies.html
What's the best way to get from the Apple Codec into a PC they can use and have the file not be so large, yet look good (unlike Compressor's output to H.264 and Animation)?
    Graeme where are you?

kB doesn'r measure the 'size' of a picture in terms of 'looking good', if you don't know resolution, bit-depth, codec etc.
a jpg, showing plain blue rectangle of 3000x5000 pixel with <20kB could look much better than a 16bit.tiff of 480x360 pixel...........
Brad told you about res of HDef video.
if you don't plan to add massive Ken Burns Effects, this res is enough.
a less compressed pic (same res, but more kBs) will finally deliver better quality, forinstance less probs with 'banding'.
I would purchase the same picture in BOTH 'sizes' and make a test, including final delivery (YouTube, DVD, web, Vimeo, projection, whatever) .... and judge with your own eyes, what fullfills YOUR criteria of 'quality'.

  • After compressor, video looks very bad

I exported my Final Cut Pro timeline using Compressor,
because I want to convert to mpeg2 to burn to DVD.
After it is exported and in compressor, I choose the
Apple setting for DVD Best Performance 90 min 4:3.
The total time of my timeline is about five minutes.
After it is converted, I play it back in the Simulator and it looks really bad, grainy, blurry, like a poor quality vhs video.
I don't know why this is.
    Can someone help please.
    thanks.

    thanks for the reply.
I am judging my video by playing it back in the Viewer, when I add it to a track. I haven't burned the DVD yet.
    Here's what I'm doing:
Export from FCP to Compressor (this is a single 5 min QT movie file, that I captured straight from my DV cam to FCP)
my presents in Compressor are: 1 pass CRB,
mpeg2 elementary, NTSC CCIR 601/DV, 29.97, frame controls: automatic, 4:3, Average data rate: 4.5, bottom first.
HOWEVER, I have also followed the same steps on another 5 min FCP project, this one consists of
multiple clips from several different sources, with effects, filters, much more complicated, and it looks great ... with the same settings as above.
Don't know what is the problem with the 5 min QT movie.
After compressor, it looks like bad vhs video.
    Any ideas?

  • Titles Break Up and Pans Jerk after Compressor / DVD SP

I have a 20 minute program. I exported from Final Cut to Compressor, and applied the MPEG-2 High Quality 60 minute setting. After 4 hours of encoding, I then imported the file Compressor created into DVD-Studio Pro and burned a test DVD. When I viewed the DVD everything was beautifully sharp BUT, on some of the pans the moves "jerk" (which they don't in the original material. And the pans aren't very fast) and more disasterously, for the end credits, the white type against black background has little flecks "eaten away" out of the letters. Given that I picked what seemed to be the highest quality MPEG-2 setting in compressor, why am I still seeing these quality issues? What can I do? I had started out, and posted in fact to the discussion, a complaint that the native encoding in DVD Studio Pro yielded less than satisfactory results. The advice was to treat the material with Compressor first and then import into DVD Studio Pro. But I still have problems. This is just a simple museum video, nothing fancy visually. How can I get professional result??? Is there a secret formula I am missing? Thanks in advance for your help, which is always invaluable. Of course, like most people posting here I'm sure, I am fighting a deadline!

What version of Compressor are you using? The setting that you mention (MPEG-2 High Quality) is a Compressor 1.x setting. I ask because your signature states that you're using FCP 6. If you're using FCP 6, then you're using Compressor 3.
If all that is correct, then you should nuke the old Compressor 1.x settings since they are incompatible with newer versions of Compressor (though the document mentions Compressor 2.x, it applies to 3 as well).
For reference on the old settings (so you know if your setting is to blame), check out this tutorial on Compressor 1.x. To confirm the correct settings that should be available to you in Compressor 3 - after following the instructions from the Knowledge Base document, of course - check out this page.
Once you're using the correct settings (native to Compressor 3) you shouldn't have any issues. Good luck.

  • Why do I loose quality after compressor?

I have quality loss after I use compressor. The file compressor makes looks much worse than the file I export from FCP. Can anyone help?? My project is 1440x1080, and I export quicktime movie as apple ProRes 422 1440x1080 30p. The exported file looks great, but after compressor it looks bad. thank You for any help.

    How are you compressing it?

  • Systematic Pixelation in mpeg2 After Compressor

I shot an event included in which are a series of 4 speeches (SD, mini-DV, 29 fps, Sony pd170). All four speeches look fine on the source tape and in FCP (v 6). They are typical head & shoulders speech shots. The total runs time for the project is ~50 min. The issue comes up at 32:30. After exporting from compressor (the one that comes with FCP v 6), a section of 2 of the speeches shows complete pixelation for 1-2 frames. This occurs every 13 frames for approximately 10 minutes. Then the video returns to its normal pristine condition. I have re-compressed a number of times to no avail. I have never seen this before and am dead in the water. I need to get this into DVDSP (v 4.2) this weekend. I have not inserted extra compression markers--this is not a high speed video (and the other speeches came out great).

    thanks for the reply.

Hi Shada this can happen if you are including additional installers to your installer for example DAQmx. When you are doing this the installer has to include other files like MAX (Measuremente and Automation Explorer). Probably when you installed Vision Builder it updated MAX, so when your installer is trying to Include MAX, its asking for the source where it was installed in your computer in this case Vision Builder.
Here you can cache the information so its not asked again, or you can download a newer version fo DAQmx, so it will update MAX and change de dependecy.

However, when I "Get Info" it's 580MB for 24,421 items. iPhoto says I have 35,977 photos. I would think the database would be into the GB for this many photos.
If I go to BIGMAC>system>Library>I find nothing about iPhoto
Is the iPhoto file in the Application Support the one I need to replace with my backup?

Is this an application that you developed? If so, then these aren't the

  • Long Unresponsive Delay with Spinning Color Wheel After Compressor Launches

    I'm running FCS3 with Compressor 3.5.
After I launch Compressor, there is a 1-2 minute delay before it will respond to my mouse clicks. The Choose a template window will finally appear after the long delay and then Compressor is responsive to user input.
The reason why this is happening is because I have six (6), yes 6, external optical DVD and Blu-ray burner drives connected to my Mac Pro through a combination of FireWire and USB. When I turn them all off, the delay and unresponsiveness in Compressor is significantly shorter (about 6 seconds). Compressor tries to scan for all your optical drives upon program startup, and this can take a long time if you have many optical drives connected. This issue does not exist in Compressor 3.
This is just a tip for anyone else out there who may have several optical drives connected to your Mac. If you only have one or two optical drives, then you may only see a 6 second delay with the spinning color wheel after Compressor starts up, which is bearable.

Again, this is just a tip. If you want to avoid long delays after starting up Compressor, then disconnect or turn off any external optical burning drives you may have connected.
