Lookup column names with Power Query
Hi,
before I go ahead and change source files, I was wondering if I can use Power Query to get a model with the following data. To simplify the example, I have the following dataset in an Excel sheet:
In another Excel sheet, the column names are defined, for example:
What would like to have in Power Query is one table with the column names from the second screenshot in column B. Is there a way to link these two tables together in Power Query in order to use these names as column headers in the dataset?
Thanks!

You can filter the list of renames against the list of actual column names with something like
FilteredColumns = Table.SelectRows(Columns, each List.Contains(Table.ColumnNames(Source), [Name])),
Again, the working end-to-end:
let
Source = Table.FromRows({{"New York", 23, 51, 732}, {"Chicago", 25, 421, 23}, {"Los Angeles", 632, 22, 423}}, {"City", "Col 1", "Col 2", "Col 3"}),
Columns = Table.FromRows({{"Col 1", "Column 1"}, {"Col 2", "Column 2"}, {"Col 3", "Column 3"}, {"Col 4", "Column 4"}}, {"Name", "Value"}),
FilteredColumns = Table.SelectRows(Columns, each List.Contains(Table.ColumnNames(Source), [Name])),
ColumnsAsRenames = Table.TransformRows(FilteredColumns, Record.FieldValues),
RenamedColumns = Table.RenameColumns(Source, ColumnsAsRenames)
in
RenamedColumns

Hi All
I am new to OIM.
Can anyone tell me what is the difference between Lookup Column Name and Column Name property of a lookup field while writing lookup query?Hi,
Lets take an example here in the post given below.
Re: Conditional forms
Column Captions = Codigo,Descripcion
Column Names = CDG_UNDD_ADM,DSCRPCN_UNDD_ADM
Column Widths = 10,200
Lookup Query = SELECT CDG_UNDD_ADM, DSCRPCN_UNDD_ADM FROM OIM_V_SAS_UNIDAD_ADM WHERE OIM_V_SAS_UNIDAD_ADM.CDG_CMPN = '$Form data.UD_SAS_01_CD_COMPANIA$'
Lookup Column Name = CDG_UNDD_ADM
Lookup Column Name will be the value which will get populated in database after you submit the form.
Column Names is the name of column you selecting.It will be also used when you are try to filter the value in lookup.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Column name in a query contains special characters
Hi folks,
The column name in a query contains special characters. For example ~ or ^. The creator of the table put these column names under double quotation while creating the table. When I get the column names form the result set meta data object it returns without quotation. Is there any way to tell the jdbc driver so that it return those column names as it was created, I mean in double quotation.
The help is urgent. I will appreciate any suggestions. Thanks .
[using oracle driver for 10g]
Thanks
AngelinaJust because the column names were in quotations when the database was created doesn't mean that the quotes are actually part of the names. What's inside the quotes is what makes the column name in the database. If I created a column as "abcd" and put it in quotes just like that ("abcd"), it would go in the database as abcd since SQL would strip off the quotes.
And there's your answer. Just put all column names in quotes whenever you need to talk to SQL. It will strip off the quotes and understand.
I think SQL will also accept square brackets ([ and ]). -
SQL Query not working for column names with spaces
Hi People..
We have a strange situation wherein, the column name in the database table has a space inbetween like "Constant Name". While we write a JDBC statement code with the select query we get an exception for invalid syntax. It will help us in a great way if you have anything to inform us on this..
Thanks
PrabzUsing case sensitive names and names with spaces in it is not a good practice.
However, I believe the SQL standard accounts for this with quoted identifiers. I believe the syntax is
. select "My Field1", "My Field2"
. from "My Table'
Have also seen the following although it might be MS Access specific.
. select [My Field1], [My Field2]
. from [My Table] -
Need a Query that Returns both Column Name with Column Data
Hi,
Hope someone can assist quite quickly. I'm after a query that will return me both column name together with column data, i.e
Table: APP_INFO
COL1 - currently has the value of 10
COL2 - currently has the value of 'HELLO'
COL3 - currently has the value of 'QWERTY'
COL4 - currently has the value of 2000Query I'm after is to return the following result set: [actual column name, actual column data]
COL1,10
COL2,'HELLO',
COL3,'QWERTY'
COL4,2000
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

What is the order of Column Names in Sqlite query results?
I am writing an application using Adobe Air, Sqlite, and Javascript.
After writing the following select statement:
SELECT field1, field 2, field 3, field 4 FROM TableA;
I would like to get the columnName/data combination from each row -- which I do successfully with a loop:
var columnName="";
for (columnName in selResults.data[i]) {
output+=columnName + ":" + selResultsdata[i][columnName] + ";";
My issue is that the column names come out in a different order every time I run the query and never once have they come out in the desired order -- field 1, field 2, field 3, field 4. If I run the query in Firefox's Sqlite Manager, the columns come out in the "proper" order. When I run them in Adobe Air, the order will be the same if I run the query mulitple times without closing the app. If I make a change such as declaring the columnName variable with "" before the for column, or declare it as (var = columnName in selResults.data) , then the order changes. If I shut down my app and re-open after lunch and run query, it comes out in another order. At this time, I'm not interested in the order of the rows, just the order of the columns in each output row. I've even tried assiging an index to columnName which seems to just pick up a single letter of the columnName.
I'm in the process of changing my HTML presentation of the data to assign a precise columnName to an HTML table title, but I'm reluctant to let go of the above concept as I think my separation of HTML/presentation and Javascript would be better if I could use the solution described above.
So, does anybody know how to force the order of the columnNames in my output -- or what I'm doing to cause it to come out in a different order?
JeaneTechnically there isn't any "order" for the return columns. They aren't returned as an Array -- they're just properties on an Object instance (a "generic object"). The random order you're seeing is the behavior of the for..in loop iterating over the properties of the object. Unfortunately, with a for..in loop there is no guaranteed order for iterating over properties (and, as you've seen, it tends to vary wildly).
The only solution is to create your own list of the column names and sort it the way you want to, then use that to create your output. For example, use the for..in loop to loop over the properties, but rather than actually get the values, just dump the column names into an Array:
var columnName="";
var columns = [];
for (columnName in selResults.data[i]) {
columns.push(columnName);
columns = columns.sort(); // just uses the default alphabetical sort -- you would customize this if desired
var j = 0;
for (j = 0; j < columns.length; j++) {
columnName = columns[j];
output+=columnName + ":" + selResultsdata[i][columnName] + ";"; -
Result of an SQL query as a Column name of another query
Hi Friends,
Can we use a result of a SQL Query as a column name of another table to retrieve data. If so please help me.
For eg :

select col1 from table1 where col1='5';
and i have another table where .. this value of col is a column name..
select ( select col1 from table1 where col1='5') from table2;

Thanks in advance.Do you really mean that?
select col1 from table1 where col1='5';That query will always return either '5' or nothing. Whatever you're trying to accomplish with that, you can do with an EXISTS query.
Perhaps you meant to reference two different columns in that query:
select col1 from table1 where col2='5';In that case, sorry, no, you can't do that without resorting to dynamic SQL.
If the same column is used throughout the query (but could change every time you run the query), then the dynamic SQL might be pretty easy. In SQL*Plus, for example, you could use substitution variables, defined in another query at run-time.
If there are only a few possible values that the sub-query could possibly return, and you know what they all are, then you can fake a dynamic query like this:
SELECT CASE ( SELECT col1
FROM table1
WHERE col2 = '5'
WHEN 'BONUS' THEN bonus
WHEN 'COMM' THEN comm
WHEN 'SAL' THEN sal
END AS col1
FROM table2
;Sorry to give such a vague answer, but it's the best I can do with the information I have.
It would help if you posted a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statments for both tables), and the results you want to get from that data. If you want to pass a parameter to the query, give the results you want for a couple of different parameters. -
Performancepoint Hierarchy Disable Drill Down Level on changing Column name in MDX query
Hello All,
I have created a report in Performance Point dashboard designer but when I change Column name (Measure Name) in MDX query this causes all the built-in ad hoc
navigation and decomposition tree functionality that PP provides to become disabled. Is there any solution or alternative way to achieve this. Please provide solution for this.

Get the column names of a query (in own plugin)
Hi,
I'm developing my first plugin. It is a region plugin where the plugin-user passes a sql query as the source that the plugin will turn into a formated report.
I found how to retreive the query result by using APEX_PLUGIN_UTIL.GET_DATA functions. Since it is an array, it is simple to cycle through the data rows. But how can i figure out
1) how many columns the query returns
2) whats the name of the columns is?
Thanks a lot in advance for any hint...
Cheers, HansHi Hans,
the package APEX_PLUGIN_UTIL provides everything you need. No need to do your own DBMS_SQL handling!
Have a look at the API documentation and the example of GET_DATA at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23903_01/doc/doc.41/e21676/apex_plugin_util.htm#BABFBIJD
The t_column_value_list record type is a two dimensional array defined as
type t_column_value_list is table of wwv_flow_global.vc_arr2 index by pls_integer;The first array contains an entry for each column.
l_column_value_list.COUNTcan be used to get the number of columns.
l_column_value_list(1).COUNTcan be used to get the number of rows. An example to iterate over all columns and rows:
for l_column in 1 .. l_column_value_list.count loop
for l_row in 1 .. l_column_value_list(l_column).count loop
sys.htp.p('column#=' || l_column || ' row=' || l_row || ' value: ' || l_column_value_list(l_column)(l_row));
end loop;
end loop;If you need the name of the columns and maybe the original data type and not everything converted to VARCHAR2 you have to use the more sophisticated GET_DATA2. See http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23903_01/doc/doc.41/e21676/apex_plugin_util.htm#BABFJHAI
This function returns the record type t_column_value_list2 which is defined as
type t_value is record (
varchar2_value varchar2(32767),
number_value number,
date_value date,
timestamp_value timestamp,
timestamp_tz_value timestamp with time zone,
timestamp_ltz_value timestamp with local time zone,
interval_y2m_value interval year to month,
interval_d2s_value interval day to second,
blob_value blob,
bfile_value bfile,
clob_value clob );
type t_value_list is table of t_value index by pls_integer;
type t_column_values is record (
name varchar2(32767),
data_type varchar2(20), /* use c_data_type_* constants to compare */
value_list t_value_list );
type t_column_value_list2 is table of t_column_values index by pls_integer;Again, it's some kind of two dimensional array. The first dimensions are the columns. But this time you also get some details of the parsed column. For example:
for l_column in 1 .. l_column_value_list2.COUNT loop
sys.htp.p('Column Name: ' || l_column_value_list2(l_column).name || ' Data Type: ' || l_column_value_list2(l_column).data_type );
end loop;Will return you all the columns of the SQL statement. Using "name" and "data_type" you can get the column name and the data type. To access the values you can use
for l_column in 1 .. l_column_value_list2.COUNT loop
sys.htp.p('Column Name: ' || l_column_value_list2(l_column).name || ' Data Type: ' || l_column_value_list2(l_column).data_type );
for l_rows in 1 .. l_column_value_list2(l_column).value_list.COUNT loop
sys.htp.p(
'row=' || l_row || ' value: ' ||
apex_plugin_util.get_value_as_varchar2 (
p_data_type => l_column_value_list2(l_column).data_type,
p_value => l_column_value_list2(l_column).value_list(l_row) );
end loop;
end loop;I used apex_plugin_util.get_value_as_varchar2 to always get a VARCHAR2, independent of the actual data type of the column. If you need the original data type, use "number_value", ... of the t_value record type.
Hope that gives you a direction
Patrick

Invalid column name (with ojdbc)
hi,
I created a resultSet by executing query with more then one table in it. (left join)
and now i want to getObject. so I execute resultSet.getObject("tablename.columnName")
and I get this error "invalid column name".
when i'm doing the same thing with MySQL it works fine.
I don't want to do aliases for all the columns because there are too much of those.
please help.
thanks,
asaf.that's not standard JDBC. You must use either the plain column name,
or the column number. In cases where there are multiple columns with
the same name you must use the column number for all but the first
column with the same name.

ResultSetMetaData.getColumnLabel(int coluN) gives column name with quote
I am using ojdbc14.jar for "Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0". My query is "Select 'column name' from dual". When i get column name using ResultSetMetaData.getColumnLabel(int coluN) it return column name including single quotes ie: for the above query result is 'columname'. Ideally it should not return ' (single quote).
Why do this happening?You will have that even when you run with sqlplus.

Problem using Hadoop with Power Query
I'm trying to connect my Power Query with Hadoop data.
I can see a list of my hadoop files but when I click on "Binary"
I have this error message.
Error Details : -
DataSource.Error: HDFS cannot connect to server 'localhost'. Unable to connect to the remote server.
Details:
http://localhost:50070/webhdfs/v1/user/hue/nyse/stock_aggregates...It looks like WebHDFS isn't configured correctly. The way WebHDFS works is that you first connect to the name node and the name node does an HTTP redirect to the data node to fetch the data from there. From the error message, it looks like the
redirect is happening to "localhost" instead of the name of the machine where the data block is stored.
We're not really able to provide much help with configuring WebHDFS, as it's not software that people on the team use regularly. -
How to retrieve column names in a query in a case sensitive way
Given a query, I want to extract all the column names/aliases in the query in a case-sensitive way.
When I use dbms_sql.describe_columns() or java.sql.ResultSetMetaData classes getColumnName() or getColumnLabel()
it returns the columns name ONLY in Upper case.
My application needs to extract the column names in the same case as it appears in the query string.
Is there any API to get this without parsing the SQL query string?
Thanks
PS: The dbms_sql.describe_columns() returns the column name in upper case.
declare
IS
l_column_recs DBMS_SQL.DESC_TAB;
l_cur NUMBER;
l_column_count NUMBER;
BEGIN
l_cur := dbms_sql.open_cursor;
dbms_sql.parse(l_cur, 'select target_type from targets', dbms_sql.NATIVE);
dbms_sql.describe_columns(l_cur, l_column_count, l_column_recs);
FOR i IN l_column_recs.FIRST..l_column_recs.LAST
LOOP
dbms_output.put_line(l_column_recs(i).col_name);
end loop;
end;
/As far as the result set is concerned, though, the column name is in all upper case. If you query the data dictionary, you would see that the TARGET_TYPE column in the TARGETS table is stored in upper case.
The way Oracle works is that column names that are not enclosed in double-quotes are converted to upper case in the data dictionary and elsewhere and then Oracle looks for the column name in the table definition. That is what allows Oracle to have case-insensitive identifiers unless a user specifies case-sensitive identifiers by enclosing the identifier in double quotes.
If you changed the query to be
SELECT target_type as "target_type"
FROM targetsOracle should report the alias in a case sensitive fashion because you've now indicated that the alias should be treated as case sensitive.

JTable column names with custom model
I'm having problems with column names in a JTable which uses a custom model. For some reason, the colums are being shown as A, B, C etc. The data, however, displays fine.
This is the code which constructs the table.
MyTableModel tableModel = new MyTableModel(myArrayList);
myTable = new JTable(tableModel);
myTable.setSelectionMode(ListSelectionModel.SINGLE_SELECTION);
myTable.setFillsViewportHeight(true);This is the class, MyTableModel
class MyTableModel extends AbstractTableModel {
private ArrayList<Account> data;
private String[] colNames = {"", "Name","Type","Group","Created","Modified"};
public MyTableModel(ArrayList<Account> data) {
this.data = data;
public int getRowCount() {
return data.size();
public int getColumnCount() {
return 6;
public Object getValueAt(int row, int col) {
Account account = (Account)data.get(row);
switch(col) {
case 0:
return account.getIcon();
case 1:
return account.getName();
case 2:
return account.getType();
case 3:
return account.getGroup();
case 4:
return account.getDateCreated();
case 5:
return account.getDateModified();
default:
return "";
public String getColumName(int index) {
System.out.println("N:"+colNames[index]);
return colNames[index];
}When the table is displayed, nothing's displayed to the console, but I'd have thought getColumnName would print the current column name. Am I missing something obvious?Oh great. I'll go back under my rock.

Dynamic column name with SELECT INTO
I am trying to build a function that derives a pay amount from a set of business rules. There are about 40 columns that hold various pay amounts and their column names are variations of 4 indicators (day shift, vs night shift, etc.) that I have to dynamically look up, ie here is the ID number and a timecard, now figure out which of the 40 fields to look up to get the pay amount.
I can determine from the timecard and employee ID which field to look at, but I'm getting hung up with the syntax needed to construct and execute the statement inside the PL/SQL block. I need to RETURN the pay I extract using the function, and I can create the correct SQL statement, but the EXECUTE IMMEDIATE won't accept the SELECT INTO syntax.
Can someone please suggest a solution? Here is the function:

FROM TS_PAYRATES
WHERE PROJECT_ID = proj AND ACTIVE = 1
AND JOB_TYPE = CHR(39) || e_typ || CHR(39)
AND PILE_ID = CHR(39) || pl_cd || CHR(39);
as a substitute for the EXECUTE IMMEDIATE block, but I can't seem to use a dynamic substitution for the column name.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.That's the most difficult part - the error messages seem to indicate a problem with the SQL statement in its execution context, because I can take the SQL string by itself and it executes perfectly.
