LOOOONG delays processing commands, spinning wheels for minutes on end despite plenty of RAM and solid-state memory.

This seems to have coincided with installing Yosemite, had no problems with Mavericks. Have read that it can happen with older or low-spec Macs, but this is a top of the line MacBook Pro Retina, 13", late 2013, 2.8 GHz Intel core i5, 8Gb RAM, 12% memory free. Long delays before obeying commands. I am so sick of that spinning wheel!

Have tried the various things suggested, but it is still lagging intermittently, sometimes hanging fire for a couple of minutes while the wheel spins. Have run Etrecheck and this is the report:

• Coloured spinning wheel for several minutes at a time

Help! Whenever we try and do anything in iMovie we get coloured spinning wheel for many minutes at a time. It won't do anything without "thinking" for ages. We have imported quite a lot of footage. Have we filled up its little brain?

Which Mac do you have? How much memory is installed?

• Stuck at boot with spinning wheel for hours

Hello,
Yesterday I made a partition and cloned my Snow Leopard in order to see if Lion worked with the software I have.
I then booted to my "backup Snow Leopard" partition and upgraded to Lion but for some reason I'm stuck with spinning wheel for hours when doing the first restart. According from the install.log it seems that the install (upgrade) was done properly.

30 seconds after finishing the installation I restart and in verbose mode I get this log (sorry for the lousy quality, with was taken with my mobile).
I've tried everything.
Repaired permissions, disk.
Resetting PRAM, NVRAM, SMC.
I even left the MBP all night in this process to see if there was any progress. No luck.
Tried to enter safe mode but I only get a black screen and a new restart. (Something like PRAM)
What could be causing this?
In the past when I installed Snow Leopard (10.6) I had some issues with my firewire (they stopped working a few months ago).
I needed to boot to safe mode in order to finish the install of SL and remove these files from /System/Library/Extensions
IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
IOFireWireAVC.kext
IOFireWireFamily.kext
IOFireWireIP.kext
IOFireWireSBP2.kext
Rebooting with this change shows that everything works properly (besides the dead firewire ports).
I don't know if the "spinning wheel" has something to do with my FireWire or Airport (which works fine in SL).. since it got stucked in there.

Finally!! I'm currently using Lion on my MBP.
With the help from members and macrumors I got this solution.
- Installed Snow Leopard on an external drive (by USB)
- Updated that partition to Lion from another macbook (I used macbook white).
After that I cloned the partition (without the FireWire kext files) with Carbon Copy Cloner to my MBP and... voila! :))
I'm replying to your message from Lion. Give it a try! If you don't have another macbook maybe a friend can help you.
I don't know if there's another method but this one is working!

Macbook Pro (2011) froze while working, forced shut down, now won't turn on. Grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel for hours. Help?
Unfortunately do not know the operating system since I never updated anything and I can't get in to it.
Thanks for your assistance.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

• Firefox 29.0 still showing spinning wheel icon even though I stopped loading the page and the sign beside URL shows that loading has stopped. Is this a bug?

I have recently updated Firefox to 29.0. I generally keep lot of tabs pinned and whenever I open firefox I stop the unwanted pages from loading. With Firefox even after I stop loading pages, some of them still show the spinning wheel on the tab title. The spinning wheel is shown even though the sign beside the URL shows that the page stopped loading. Though there is technically no problem with this, its annoying to see so many spinning wheels for no reason.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

• HT1657 watching a movie on Apple TV and it just stops in the middle of it.  Try settings and check for rental and just get the spinning wheel for over 30 minutes.

Can't seem to finish a movie on AppleTV.  It just stops in the middle of movie and returns to menu.  Try to check for rentals under settings like it says to when we try and download movie again and all I get is a spinning wheel.  At least the second this has happened in the middle of a movie.  Beginning to think AppleTV is junk!

• Color wheel pops up for minutes on end when trying to perform simple tasks?

Ever since last night, my Macbook Pro (purchased in September of 2009), has been incredibly slow. I noticed it first while trying to browse the web. Out of nowhere, while doing things, like browsing Facebook, that I could normally do easily and without incident, the color wheel/beach ball/rainbow wheel/etc. would appear for what felt like an eternity, and for seemingly no reason whatsoever. Firefox was the only application I had running, and there was nothing excessive being done. After several more instances in the next few minutes, I tried my luck with Safari. Same result. Then, I realized it wasn't  just confined to web browsing. Even trying to open a Finder window would cause the color wheel to come up. Every simple action that used to take mere milliseconds to complete now can take up to 5 minutes to unfreeze. After I finally managed to get my laptop to recognize the external hard drive I plugged in so that I could try and use Time Machine to back up the more than 200 gigabytes that occupy my dying hard drive, the back up failed after an hour. This may or may not be related, as I noticed that the icon for the external hard drive no longer showed on my desktop. I have scanned my computer using a virus scanner obtained from the App Store a year or two ago. Nothing turned up. Finally, I have tried both restarting and shutting down my computer, yet all that that has shown me is that start-up is now a laborous process as well. For the first time, it showed me a loading bar under the gray Apple logo that remained empty for a few minutes, until it finally disappeared entirely and the operating system booted up. My attempt at entering Safe Mode on startup also failed, leaving me with nothing but a white screen that forced me to manually shut down my computer and give up in desperation. I'm planning on taking my Macbook to the Apple Store to see what can be done before irreparable damage is inflicted to my hard drive, because I value many of the files that have been added since my last back up several months ago. If any of you have had similar problems or have any idea what is going on, please let me know. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Danny

It sounds like either data corruption, malware, bad sectors on the drive (moved it while it's opearating? a no-no) or the drive is possibly failing.
I'll give you a bunch of links and you decide what you want to do.
Apple is just going to charge you to replace the drive and not save your data.
If you want to recover your data and can't fix things yourself, take the machine to a local Mac repair shop as it's rather simple to replace the drive and Apple might not have one for a older SATA using machine aslo they specialize in data recovery efforts also. Apple doesn't.
You also can replace the drive yourself too.

• I am working on a file I created in Indesign CC 2014 and when I try to rearrange pages in the Pages menu or try to package the file, I get the spinning wheel for 20 mins. then it crashes. What should I do?

Can anyone help? I started a 24 page document in Indesign CC 2014 and have been using the file off of a dropbox acct on my two machines (desktop and macbook pro). I need to rearrange some of the pages but when I try to drag and drop the pages in the Pages menu, I get the ominous spinning wheel...for about 20 mins at times. then It will just crash. The document doesn't have a tone of images. I've also tried to collect and package the file but get the same thing.
What should I do?? Help!

try the script at Adobe Community: InDesign 6 is crashing when attempting to open a particular document. All others are opening OK.
I'd also try moving the pages to a new file, though I suspect that will crash too. Divide and conquer might work -- tray one of your operations on half the document at a time, then repeat by dividing any piece that fails, and so on, until you isolate a page, then use the same method to isolate an object (though it's possible you have a corrupt page).

• Been trying to fix spinning wheel for over a week HELP!

My Snow Leopard IMac has been stuck in spinning wheel mode forever    I have used utility to verify permission and to repair disk but no matter what each time I start the computer I get a message that Firefox hasn't logged out because there is a script running.    It asks if I want to stop the scrip but whenever I move the mouse to say yes it just starts the spinning wheel again and I have no control over the computer at all because moving the mouse just wakes up the spinning wheel.
How can i get my computer back please?? Thanks if you can help with this FOREVER problem?

I will try those --- I would say that I did try to start it earlier today with the Shift Key held on startup which I guess is supposed to be SAFE MODE?   anyway - the same thing happened in safe mode, the endless spinning.
I don't understand Safe Mode or what it is supposed to do but it didn't do anything in my case.
I will read your links and hopefully be able to figure this out.
Is there any way in terminal that I can figure out what is making this spinning thing?
For a long time when i tried to start my computer it would always say You were not logged out because Firefox was still running or something along that line and I had the spinner but it would quit -  This was going on for a month or so at least prior to this problem

• Suddenly, my 1st gen can't access iTunes store.  It sits on "Accessing iTunes Store", with a spinning wheel for days.  I can access the store from my iMac, but not the Apple TV.  Everything is up to date.  What's the deal?

I can't figure out why my 1st gen appletv cannot access the itunes store.  All newer movies are coming up to view and I can watch previews, but when I go to rent, it stays on the spinning wheel with the Accessing iTunes Store forever.  I've left it going for at least 4 or 5 days.  I can rent from my iMac, but all I have is the headphone, analog, 2-channel audio feed and not the true digital surround.  It sounded much better from the appletv.  HELP!

Read a bunch of posts from 2008 and 2010.  The only step I found that I hadn't tried was the ol' plug pull.  After that, I got the first movie I tried renting.  ???  At least it works now.

• My imac won't load properly and gets the spinning wheel for everything!? Help!

HI everyone,
hope hope someone will be able to help.
My imac freezed up the other day for no apparent reason. I couldn't do anything apart from move the mouse. So had to shut dow with the power button.
When it restarted I was able to log in as usual to the user that I normally use. Yet when I went to click on anything I get the spinning wheel of death! I've rebooted in safe mode but this didn't make a difference. I can't even run disk utility to check if there is an issue with the drive!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
thanks charlotte

Sounds like maybe the Hard Drive is failing or has failed.
1. Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
If you can not see the Mac OS X volume (Macintosh HD) in Disk Utility while started up form the Install Disc, then you will need to make an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP and have them help.
If you have a good backup in place, then you can easily restore the new Hard Drive from backup. If not, then depending on what is wrong, you may or may not be able to recover your user data from a bad Hard Drive.

• Spinning wheel for Illustrator, any ideas?

I turned on my computer today and opened up illustrator and all I get is the spinning wheel on opening. Acrobat distiller also does the same as soon as it opens any pdf. Other applications are ok like InDesign, what could this be? Have tried updating latest OS software and also uninstalled and reinstalled apps...

Which version?
Which system?
What did you do since it last worked?
Is a printer connected?
When does the spinning wheel start? Exactly what does the startup screen read Illustrator is doing?
Have you checked your fonts?
Any third party plugins installed?
Do you have a graphic tablet? Whcih one?
Font management? Which one?
Any special input devices?

• My iMac wont boot up properly. Stops at background pic, no dock, only little apple show up top and cursor sticks on little spinning wheel. Have to shut down manually in back and reboot to get it to work. Any ideas why this sometimes happens?

I'm running OSX 10.9.1 (13B42)
My problem is that occasionally my Mac wont boot properly. It gets to the background picture where the dock should open but it freezes there. The little apple shows up top left but nothing else and the cursor shows as the little spinning wheel that wont do anything. I can't click on the apple to restart, I have to switch off in back and then start up again. It usally boots all the way after that but I'm worried there's something up since this seems to be happeneing more frequently. Also I'm worried that having to manually shut down like that will somehow damage the software in time?
I tried a disk verify but there were no repairs needed. I repaired disk permissions too just in case but it still seems to happen every once in a while.
I've noticed recently that it happens the next reboot after I've been streaming movies online if that helps. Is there any reason for this and anything i can do to stop it in the future?

• Late 2011 MacBook Pro stuck at spinning wheel of death after a Thunderbolt issue, HD erasing and fresh Lion install from Recovery HD. Please help me!!!

So, I think the title says it all, but to give you a little more info:
I connected my late 2011 MacBook Pro to my TV using a Thunderbolt HDMI adapter, and closed the lid. When I opened it, it wouldn't show the login screen, so I restarted using power button. Got stuck at the Apple logo with the spinning wheel. So I booted the Recovery HD and found out it was a HD problem, so I (reluctantly) erased the HD and installed Lion from scratch. When it rebooted (after DOWNLOADING the Lion components) I got some terminal commands (sorry for not being more specific, still a noob when it comes to Mac) and then the screen faded and a message appeared saying I needed to reboot the computer. So I did. 3 effing times. Then I got stuck AGAIN at the spinning wheel, and I'm currently with that on my screen. I'm trying the forums before calling Apple (my computer's still within the 90 days of warranty) because it's not yet 9 A.M. where I live

can you go back to recovery mode then open disk utility.
in disk utility, higlight the disk, the one saying the brand and size then click on repair disk under first aid tab
if it repairs fine, that's okay
if repair was not successful, go to partition and change current to 1 partition then apply
install lion again
hope this helps
