Looooong Time To Repair Permissions

Brand new machine so I'm just learning it. Repair Permissions first reviews the Permissions Data Base. This takes 4 1/5 minutes by the clock. That seems a very long time. Is it normal? Then, it takes 2 min to repair even though it found nothing to repair. Again, is that normal?

OS X stores file and folder permission and ACL settings in the /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb file.
Mine contains about 90mb of info. It may contain more than double that depending on optional
packages installed. If you would like to see whats in the file, drag a copy of it out on your desktop
and open it with Pacifist (don't try to open it in its default location, its permission setting won't
allow it). After looking at the contents, I think you will see why it takes as long as it does to repair
permissions.

Does anyone know what this means? Is anyone else getting these messages consistently when running repair permissions? i did a clean installation of Leopard and have run the updater. Permissions seem to take a while to repair, and i am going to install the larger 10.5.1. updater as soon as it finishes downloading... but i did run the 40 mb updater that software update downloaded.
Any insight would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

This is the only trouble if at all that I have in installing Leopard, and while some as discussed previously are nothing to be concerned about the others have me concerned. From the installation disk I have run Disk repair and Repair Permissions but nothing changes in the list below. So any thoughts on how to clear some out?

It has been recommended by people who misunderstand its purpose and its method. It's never been an effective tool to solve any beach balling issue, despite all of the folklore to the contrary.
I see no check box in Disk Utility to engage an option to ignore permissions irregularities that "are not a problem"
Unchecking the "Show details" box above the progress window will do that. Better yet, don't bother repairing permissions at all unless it is for a task for which it is an appropriate tool.

  • Help With Repair Permissions!

    Hi All,
I have a June 2009 17" 2.8 UMBP. I keep getting regular Spinning Beach Balls, Lock Ups, Delays and a whole host of Trackpad Issues much like many people are experiencing with the 1.7 Firmware Update which only is supposed to affect the 13" & 15" UBMP Models. I read on another post that Apple recommended to "Verify & Repair Disk Permissions" which I done. The problems still remain and the report in "Verfiy Permissions" is exactly the same (it seems) as that of the "Repair Permissions" and where it says "Repair Permissions Complete" at the end. The "Repair Permissions" Report still says that "Permissions Differ" on all lines - how can they have been repaired if they still differ? I am a novice and not technically aware about Macs so I hope someone can help me. Here is a copy of the report:

    Hi
I think you will find that many people are suffering this very same problem with permissions, it is nothing to be too concerned about and will in all probability disappear after a system update sometime in the future.
There was a similar problem when I had a PowerBook G4 every time you repaired permissions it showed a whole raft of errors which would not go away. Eventually Apple released a system update and they all vanished.
It is not broken and it is not going to impact on the running of the computer in anyway.
I have just got a new MBP and have the same permission problem but my trackpad is functioning perfectly and I don't suffer any spinning beach ball.
I would contact Apple, or go into an Apple Store and seek advice about the trackpad and spinning beach ball as these are probably caused by other problems than permissions being wrong.

  • Weird Message from Repairing Permissions

Had a new iMac for about a month.
For a lark I did a repair permsissions - mainly as a speed test.
I got a message that "CoreServices...as been changed. Unable to repair"
    (Yes, "has" was mispelled)
Hovering over the line showed that the file in question was in Apple's Remote Desktop .App
I wouldn't necessarily care, but this screams security issue.
    I have installed:
    Rosetta
I partitioned with Boot Camp, but I have not used it yet.
The only non-Apple Apps are a driver for a USB sound interface
    Adobe PhotoShop Elements
The older version (PPC)of Microsoft Office (2005?)
    Quicken and Turbo Tax
    Is this a common error?

There are numerous but innocuous messages reported by Disk Utility when repairing permissions. See the following: Mac OS X 10.5- Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore.
These messages will occur each time you repair permissions, and they may be safely ignored.

  • Disk utility - repair permissions keeps reporting same issues

my machine has been unstable for a while, and i thought it was time to repair permissions.
normally, after being run a couple of times, there are no more to be repaired. however, this time, the same 35 lines of permissions being changed are displayed over and over. also after rebooting.
    1. why aren't the permissions finally corrected?
most issues concern 'System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents', 'System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework/Versions/A/Resources/P lugins' and a couple of warnings that suid-files are changed and won't be repaired.
    2. i never used front row, - what's happening?
    3. what's with the suid-files?
    4. will reinstalling leopard help my situation?
    5. if i use time machine to restore, how can i be sure the problems don't persist? or 'get back in'?

why aren't the permissions finally corrected?
Apple changed the structure of some of its packages without updating the repair permissions mechanism. Until and unless they release a patch, nothing done will stop those messages from appearing. Disregard them.
i never used front row, - what's happening?
You installed a package which updated it.
    what's with the suid-files?
    Those messages are normal.

  • Lion Disc Utility won't repair permissions

I purchased a MacBook Pro that came with Snow Leopard loaded.  I was given a free Lion upgrade, which I downloaded. When I ran Disc Utility to repair Permissions I get a long list of "library" errors that are supposedly repaired. However, when I ran it again to verify the repair, all of the errors were back. I did this 4 times, restarting twice, then called Apple who walked me through the repair and it still didn't work.
I surmise the errors are the result of loading Lion over Snow Leopard since my Mac Mini that came with Lion doesn't have the problem.  Are these library errors anything to worry about?  Anyone know if Apple's working on the problem?
    Thanks,
    Linda

  • How long to repair permissions

Got the grey screen...trying to fix with repair permissions...any idea how long it might take to run the repair....I have a 250G drive with about 120G of it used. I am asking just so I know if at some point I should give up....or just leave it for a while while it does its work.

There is no hard and fast time for repairing permissions - I have a PB running 10.5.2 and it takes almost 45 minutes, but on my intel aluminum iMac also running 10.5.2, it takes 3 minutes.
I generally get impatient when a process stalls as I track it in Activity Monitor and it doesn't do anything for several minutes. An Archive and Install can take as lttle as half-an-hour or the two hours it took you. I'm sorry there's no real answer tyo give you, but machines are variable and so are times.

  • Repair permissions results

Every time I repair permissions I get a lot of results (pasted at the bottom of this message)
How come I get the same results each time ie: once it's repaired them why do they come up again if I immediately repeat the 'repair permissions'?
The first ones to do with widgets are probably because I have Konfabulator installed.
But the rest of them I don't know why they are appearing.
    Is everything OK ??

"The lines listed above are merely notifications that special permissions are being used for the files listed. When these files were originally installed, they had certain permission settings. Since then, Apple has decided that changing the permissions on those files slightly would result in a more secure OS. The message you see is simply a notification that Disk Utility will be looking to make sure the permissions of the listed files match these new, special permission settings rather than the original. You will likely see this every time you run Repair Permissions from now on. This isn't cause for concern. "

    Thanks!

    Dan --
There are lot of things behind the scenes that change permissions, things that only the engineers know.
And they are not necessarily errors . . . They're more like notations.
At the end of your messages, does it say, "Repair permissions complete?"
If so, you're fine.  You can ignore them.
You should only be concerned if it says "Repair Permissions could not be completed."

  • Weird message while repairing permissions

    Hi,
I was repairing the permissions on my MacBook Pro and during the repair I got the following message:
ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root/Library/Preferences".
2007-10-29 17:36:07 -0400: ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root/Library".
2007-10-29 17:36:07 -0400: ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root".
Does anyone have any idea what this means? I have no idea. Thanks

There are numerous but innocuous messages reported by Disk Utility when repairing permissions. See the following: Mac OS X 10.5- Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore.
These messages will occur each time you repair permissions, and they may be safely ignored.

  • Repair permissions - always has to correct secure.log

I've noticed that every time I repair permissions the ./private/var/log/secure.log is corrected from -rw-r----- to -rw-------
I'm curious to know why this is happening - is it something I should be worried about?
    Cheers
    Steve

It happens because the "weekly" maintenance task has a different (and better) idea of what the permissions for this file should be. See the tail end of this User Tip: Spurious Permission errors in OS X 10.4.
So, in a way, you are more secure without running Repair Permissions!

These are simply informational alerts. You can ignore them, there is nothing wrong. You might try downloading the 109 MB 10.5.1 updater and reapplying. This has repaired the occurrences for many.

  • Can Repairing Permissions Harm Regular Operation

I have read many times that repairing permissions cannot harm normal operation of your mac and .... it's certainly never caused me any problems as I run permissions repair every so often.
The reason I ask though is because of a buddy of mine whose mac, running OS 10.5, was running sluggishly. Out of curiosity I asked - "have you ever repaired your permissions" and he said - "what's that?" So I decided to run "Verify" permissions just to see what came up and it was a huge list. I told my friend that I did not know if this was a cause of his computer's sluggishness but that if he wanted I would run "Repair" permissions. He said to go ahead. So I did.
A few days later he was trying to update through "software update" iTunes and Safari ... and he tried to install "App Delete" as well. His mac would not install any of these apps. When he took his mac to the the Apple store they asked if he had recently repaired his permissions and he said "yes." they said that was the problem and that he shouldn't repair permissions unless he had a problem. (To me "sluggishness" is a problem.) Since he had all his stuff backed up the proceeded to wipe his computer and do a clean install. Seems a brute force fix to me. Personally I would have loved to sleuth a more subtle remedy, even if for nothing more than learning more, about the workings of OSX.
So, did I mess up my friends mac?
    Any opinions?
    Message was edited by: riverside

There is no reason to repair permissions unless there is a permissions related problem. Repairing permissions is not a troubleshooting or maintenance procedure. Repairing permissions will not fix "sluggishness." That would be caused by any number of things, but not permissions.
You did not mess up your friend's Mac. It was already messed up, and it's still messed up for some other set of reasons.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack (not compatible with Snow Leopard.) If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Why don't I see the log when I repair permissions with Disk Utility

I'm having issues with Safari hanging or bogging down to a snail's pace lately. I have tried several times to repair permissions with Disk Utility. It runs for several minutes, but shows nothing in the log even though the box is checked to show details. I've never seen this before. I don't know if Disk Utility is doing it's job or not....
    Any thoughts?

If the progress bar goes to the end, then you don't have any permissions needing repair. The fact that Safari is slowing down has nothing really to do with permissions.
