Loops to a seperate partition?

Hi, I have a couple partitions on my hard drive and I want to move all my media files to a seperate partition. The is a big chunk, say 2GB of garage band in my root library>application support>garageband . Is there anyway I can move these to a seperate partition and have garage band recognize that I still have the loops. I tried copying them over and then putting a symbolic link in place of the old folder but it says Garage Band can't find any loops when I do that.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Okay I'm following your instructions...1 note: the different partitions are on the same drive so I just moved it from the OS partition to the media partition. So the problem is when I go to copy the loops back in the garageband loops window from the other location it says there isn't enough space on the Hard Drive. Which is true, the loops are about 1GB and I have just under that much on my OS partition. I know thats a very small amount to be left which is the reason I am trying to move stuff over. But it shouldn't be a problem right? Because shouldn't the loops be copying to the media partition not the OS partition.
I hope this makes sense
Thanks!

  • [SOLVED] /mnt and /mnt/boot on seperate partitions?

I'd like to keep /mnt/boot on my ssd, and keep /mnt on my hdd. I know it's possible to keep /mnt on one partition, and /mnt/home on another, because I've done it on another computer. When I tried to do this new setup, pacstrap failed to install.
    Here's what I did
    mkdir /mnt/boot
mount /dev/sda7 /mnt/boot #a logical partition on my ssd
mount /dev/sdb3 /mnt #a large partition on my hdd
    Any suggestions?

The mount point for / during installation is arbitrary. What you need to be asking is "Can / and /boot be on separate partitions?" And the answer is yes.
However, the real problem is that you created and mounted /mnt/boot before mounting /mnt. This is pretty basic stuff, so I suggest you try to figure out why that can't work.

  • New to Mac... I have partitioned my hard drive Dual Boot M.Lion/S. Leopard with 2 OS partitions and a Media Partition. How do I direct my file storage to the Media Partition? Can I put a "Media" folder on both OS Desktops that will allow me to drag n drop

New to Mac... I have Partitioned my MacBookPro with Dual Boot Partitions running M.Lion and S. Leopard and a seperate media partition.
How do I assign my storage to the MEDIA Partition once I am booted in either OS?
Can I place a folder on my desktop so I can read/write ALL my media to?

Why not? Make a folder in your media partition and put an alias folder (shortcut) on the desktop of each partition/ OS. You can right click on the folder in the media partition and click on "make alias".
If you want to direct your iTunes media to point to the media partition, google "move iTunes library to external disk" and follow the steps; the instructions should be the same for a seperate partition as it is for an external drive.

  • Re index Apple Loops

I moved my Apple Loops to an external hard drive because I was running out of space but when I went to open an Apple Loop it could not find it.
I tried continue but that couldnt find it so tried re index loops and now the loop browser has only a few loops I put in and most of the catagories are not highlighted for me to pick.
    any help welcome.
    1) can I have loops on a seperate drive?
    2) how do I get the loop Browser back to normal?
    thanks,
    Bongolian

jord, i did also try moving individual files, and they just won't add to the index. the window saying it's indexing pops open for a split second and disappears. nothing gets indexed. it must be a problem with not having an index file in the apple loops index folder. i must have accidentally trashed it, but i would have imagined it would recreate one. someone even suggested trashing it.
I also tried re-installing garage band, and i checked the files, and they are read and write. I've also updated to 7.1.1. And these are the original apple loops which i can't get indexed. Strange.
I wonder, if someone emailed me an index file, maybe i could re-index then.
    any ideas, offers?

  • Loop rate in main vi slowsdown when subvis window is clicked.

    Hi All,
I have developed one USB DAQ application with 3 while loops in main vi and 1 subvi with an activex container for video display.
This video displayer subvi has no function and it has that Activex container to display the video.
The purpose is to playback acquired signal with the recorded video.
So I keep both VIs frontpanel opened at all time.
The speed of the loops in main vi are as follows,
Loop1: Contains event structure with 250ms timeout terminal.
Loop2: Contains an while to play the recorded data with the recorded time duration between successive data points.
may be min of 70 ms delay for each iteration.
Loop3: Contains another while which run min of 15 ms delay for each iteration.
The speed problem is as follows,
When i click on the subvi which contains an activex container, the while loop in Loop2 does not run properly and each iterations delay in millisecond is increasing constantly in terms of  250 milliseconds atleast.
After releasing mouse button from subvi, the loop agains starts running normally.
it would be great help for me if somebody can provide a solution for this problem.
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks,
    Sathish

I think I know why this happens, I am not sure how te get a workaround.
The ActiveX interface runs in the  UI thread just like the event structure.
The event structure forces the whole VI into the UI thread and is only triggered every 250 ms when the ActiveX is claiming all the UI power.
I think moving the 70 ms. loop into a seperate VI should do.
(I might be wrong about the above theory)

    what about Linux
is there a way to open Both Partitions at the same time to view OS10 and XP side by side on the same computer ?

Sounds like you didn't plan enough space. Not w/o destroying (backup) your current partitioning to install each natively.
Maybe Parallels would fit your needs.

  • (Windows 8) All partitions are messed up. Can't load recovery.

I have an HP pavillian G6 that I have totally messed up.
It came with windows 8, and I had no intention of removing or dual booting it.  I wanted to partition the C drive to chop off 10 gigs for a seperate partition for Outlook files.  I used EASEUS Partition Master 9.1.0 Home Edition.  It seemed to be working fine.  When I rebooted to allow the partitioning, it failed and gave me an error message.
I restarted and got an error message loading.  If I had stopped there I might have been okay by running a repair from a Windows 8 install disk.  At that point I did not have one, so I decided to pop the hard drive out, put it into a usb hard drive enclosure and check it out.  The 10 gigs were removed from the C drive, but the new partition was never created.  I decided to go ahead and finish that process from my Windows 7 PC.  Of course, that didn't work.  So I decided to put it back to the way it was.  Unfortunately, I chose to merge the partition, and the target info was set as the new partition I had created.  So it messed up my boot sector and moved all my files to a folder within the "new drive."  I have since moved all the files back to the root, but of course, it still doesn't work.
I have tried loading a windows 8 recovery disk, but it stops halfway through loading.  Interestingly enough, it will load all the way if I have the hard drive out, but that doesn't do me any good.
I have tried running a repair with a Windows 8 Install disk, but it cannot find the OS.
I have tried to set the recovery partition to active, but it will not allow me to because it is not an MBR.
I currently get the Recovery screen.  A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.  Error Code: 0xc0000225
I could format and reinstall Windows 8, but I want to use the license that was preinstalled (no discs came with the laptop) instead of the license with this disc.  I would not mind ordering a recovery CD from HP, but I am not sure if it will work, considering the state my partitions are in.  This is a brand new Laptop, so I don't mind starting over from scratch, there are no personal files, just a few apps that are easily replaced.
Can anyone help me before I go completely nuts?

It appears that resizing the partition has interfered with how the notebook was configured to boot.
To get around this, the HDD will need to be restored using the recovery disks themselves. You can use the recovery disks you made if you made them before the issue occurred. If not, they will need to be ordered from HP. The number for the U.S. and Canada is 1-800-474-6836. The recovery disks will work regardless of the partition configuration as long as the hard drive was not converted to a dynamic disk. If it has been converted to a dynamic disk, then the drive will need to be revered back to a standard disk. I do not believe that is the case.
It may be best to start with wiping the hard drive free of any changes that have been made. This guide for KillDisk should help with the process. Page 10 lists how to get the free version to accomplish the task of wiping the hard drive.
Once the hard drive is wiped, it should be ready to be recovered using the recovery disks.
    Let me know what happens.

  • Hard disks, partitions and Mac Pro

    Hi all,
I'm new to the Mac Pro and am migrating from a Windows environment, I have used a iBook for the past 6 months and this is the reason for totally migrating to a Mac Desktop.
I have spent half a day on browsing the forum here, very confusing I must say but then again I add that I am an absolute a-technical person.
    I have a few questions on storage which I hope might get answered here;
    My Hardware:
I am about to order a 2,66ghz Mac Pro, 4GB Ram, XP1900 and a 160Gb hard disk will will be replaced as soon as the Mac Pro enters my dwelling.
    My Work Environment:
Apart from the basic office things, Internet, Mail and such I will use the mac Pro 90% for Imaging purposes. Most used applications:
    - CS2
    - Aperture
    - Adobe Lightroom
as well as a number of add-ons like HDR programs, Noise programs, RAW converters etc.
I am a Photographer working with Mid-format and Standard format images, which in some case, like when using HDR can reach sizes of well over 150-200Mb per image!
Useually the image size of a 16bit mid-format tiff are around 70MB.
Now for the question, how to configure the best possible HD setup.
I will use WinXP, which I would like to run on a seperate partition/disk
    I need a schratch disk for CS2
I need roughly 500GB of intermediate storage for imgaes before the periodically get back-up to external hard disk.
So I was thinking the following, and this only based upon how I used my Win Environment:
150GB Raptor as start-up disk and location for programs and OSX as well as basic documents and files
    76GB Raptor as Scratchdisk
500GB as WinXp disk (30%) and rest as storage for Image cataloging system (mainly normal sized Jpegs)
    750GB as Image tank
I have the Raptors, but don't have to use them if a better solution comes out. Since I will be using my Win pc until everythink works satisfactory on the Mac...
    some remarks:
I have red about raid, both 0 and 1 seem interesting but I will loose out on disk space possibilities, and will be forced to work with external drives again, which I don't like... but if push comes to shove I will do that.
sorry for the information overload, and maybe all points have been answered in other threads before, but whilst browsing through hundreds of threads I couldn't see the forest becasue of the trees anymore.
One last comment, I make my living with photography so a good setup is of vital importance ....
Kindest regards, and many thanks in advance

    Hi all,
    Hi,
Now for the question, how to configure the best
    possible HD setup.
IMO; use a 3 drive RAID 0 for your boot, application, and
data partition - my style would be all in one big partition
and just segragate stuff with folders. I would then add 2
USB or FireWire drives. One for backing up your system
and one for the windows XP if you just have to have windows
running on your MacPro. They don't run at the same time you
know - like on Amiga where MacOS, Windows, and AmigaOS all
multitasked together in shared memory space simultainiously.
As such my opinion is that it's better to keep your WinTel
box on a KBM switch and LAN the two together.
I will use WinXP, which I would like to run on a
    seperate partition/disk
    I need a schratch disk for CS2
With a 3 drive RAID your disk I/O is between 3 and 20 times
the speed of a single drive setup so separate cache drive
isn't really advantagious. Click on the link below and
scroll down to the Drive Test area:
    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc1=199338&doc2=195252
Both are my profiles. One with a single drive, and one
with a 3-drive raid. No other differences.
I need roughly 500GB of intermediate storage for
imgaes before the periodically get back-up to
    external hard disk.
So I was thinking the following, and this only based
upon how I used my Win Environment:
150GB Raptor as start-up disk and location for
programs and OSX as well as basic documents and
    files
    76GB Raptor as Scratchdisk
500GB as WinXp disk (30%) and rest as storage for
Image cataloging system (mainly normal sized Jpegs)
    750GB as Image tank
I have the Raptors, but don't have to use them if a
better solution comes out. Since I will be using my
Win pc until everythink works satisfactory on the
    Mac...
IMO the Raptors are overpriced. If it were me I would sell
them. I think the two together will pay for all three 320
or 300 gig RAID drives. I did some research regarding which
drives are good in a Mac RAID environment and I ended up
going for the the MaxLine Maxtor drives (even though I hate
Maxtor usually). So far I'm very happy with them and the
fact that they are like one of the most inexpensive drives
you can get didn't hurt either.
I think that if a person REALLY needs the speed offered by
Raptor drives and is willing to pay the difference for it
then they should just get a dedicated RAID card which offers
even more of a speed increase!!!
    some remarks:
I have red about raid, both 0 and 1 seem interesting
but I will loose out on disk space possibilities, and
will be forced to work with external drives again,
which I don't like... but if push comes to shove I
    will do that.
You don't lose any space if you use just RAID 0. If there
are three 300gig HDs that format individually to 260gig
each then in a RAID 0 configuration you would have 780gigs.

  • How to restore mac to single partition?

Im shure this question has been aked before, however I am unable to find an anser to my specific problem.
I am trying to restore to a single OS X Mountain Lion patition on a iMac mid 2011  after allocating 300 GB to a seperat partition for Ubuntu. That 300 GB has been partitioned into 8 partitions, afer 3 or more installs of Ubuntu. When i try to erase the partitions i get errors like too small, un readable, unrecognized, etc. They are all blank. Is there any way to restore to one partition without wiping the hard drive and reinstalling mountain lion and using time machine for data on Macintosh HD partition? If not could you give me pointers and tips on how to wipe, reinstall, and restore to backup?
    Thanks, Kundy
PS the hard drive is 1 tb and 700 GB for OS X has been untouched exept for resize for 300 extra partition.

    You can try GParted.

  • Error 2343 when re-installing Photoshop Elements 10 on different partition

I have Windows 7 - 64. When my "c"drive got too full I decided to put my programs on a seperate partition. Now when I try to install PE 10 on the new partition, it wants to uninstall PE 10. How do I get around this?

  • WHY can't i PARTITION base drive ?

I am having issues w/ getting assorted OS9-OSX 2.8-10.4 etc.
i like to 'stay' w/ what works and not always upgrade until i really need to........well i should be able to set up a partition so i can have multiple OS like 'classic' and X.
So i get save all my files from the base HD that has the main OS but when i go to partition it...it doesn't work, stays muted..../the bigger HD which ironically won't let me get any higher then 10.2.3 will allow the partition......the main HD did allow me to upgrade to 10.2.8 which i use the most and want to SAVE but add TIGER on a seperate partition but it won't allow....it is under 10g w/ 6g left.
right now w/ NO partition i have multiple OS's on STARTUP discs......is there another way to add 10.4 but keep seperate w/o partition......as it is i have
[9.0-----9.2----9.2.2------10.2.3-------10.2.8] on startup D to choose from.
    can i add [10.4] w/o partitioning ????
im afraid of 'erasing the whole disc' like it warns....is that true ?
and why won't the main HD allow that partition......does it need to be eraced first ?
this is WHY i don't upgrade.......if it works why alter it ??????/cuz i can't run certain stuff like the latest QT.......but i always hear that older versions which is EVERYTHING after 6 months doesn't always jive w/ latest OS version.
sounds complicated.....but i just want to have options.
    thanx

First off......every idea you suggests makes an impression...sure back up everything, but if i remember ext tape BU systems are expensive and on my current budget that would be a luxery item, Having 2 HDs should be able to BU the most vital stuff....that being what will get lost in a clean install.
so what do i do ?
    i assume that i would need to (copy-dup-drag ?) USER-SYS folder- Library.......anything else ?
last time i had to input serial numbers for EVERYTHING, updates, plugins like Flash-shockwave etc. where is that all stored ?
other issue is FIRST AID in OSX could not repair or verify the main HD saying "HD failed to unmount cuz its in use"
this while im in diff OS on 2nd HD ?
The issue w/ TRASHING a ton of stuff......i called it choked, but i feel it would have worked if i emptied a little at a time. I did have 2.25g left in HD and twice that in TRASH, so when i tried to take out files, then it took even more space away.......can you empty a specified file in the trash ?
Running Tech Tool in OS9 seem to repair something and 'pass' but any idea how or why this main HD is now listed as OSX on the startup disc when it was 10.2.8 ?
[Get info ].....what files should have [system] and what should have [USER - self]
Is there a site or good DVD that explains the features of OSX ? HELP Center is usually worthless....i see so much that i have no idea 'how or why'...the 'concept'....drop box-public-sites- 'service' ie grab/summerize etc.......
    !@##$$%>>>THE BAD NEWS (for me)
i just did a startup disc to my main HD and get this grey screen w/ a panal in various langueages stating "you need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button bla bla bla......
well i went thru this before......it begins then freezes grey w/ a thick static bar left to right.....yuk.
any ideas what i should do ????????
the only thing that works is hold-option then i can get to HD 1-2......but 1 my main always fails. Whats the diff between Install & restore ???
again sorry so long.......but im trying to find awa y to repair or restore and avoid clean install thats even if i can get to that.....

  • How do I expand the start-up disk partition?

A few weeks ago, I learned about partitioning.  I thought I would give it a try on my Mac Pro.  I have two 1TB Hard Drives on it.  I partitioned all the hard drives into 4 seperate partitions.  I also partitioned the start-up disk.  Except, I goofed up.  My start-up disk partition seems to be stuck at 102.08.
The problem comes because all my programs, applications, etc. are on the bootup disk partition.  I get anywhere near 10GB’s, and the computer doesn’t run quite properly.  I current sit around 30GB free space, but constantly have to clean up this partition.
In Disk Utility, I click on the hard drive, then click the "Partition" option.  In the partition information, where I can normally resize the partition, it won’t allow me.  I can resize most other partitions, except the start-up disk partition.
If there is any suggestions or help, it would be greatly appreciated.

That isn't possible. The data in the partition before the exchange could only have gone to the non-partitioned table.

  • Help with partitions and file systems [SOLVED]

Hi, i have been using Ubuntu for a while, and now i want to move to Arch. I've probed it in a PC and i like so i want to make que change.
But, before installing Arch, I have 2 doubts. I red the beginners guide and also the instalation guide. There it says that if better to have diferents partitions for  /, /boot/, /home, /usr, /var, y /tmp
Usually, i alwayes used something like this:
        * /boot (32megas)
        * /swap (512 megas)
        * /root (6 a 8 gigas)
        * /home (80 gigas aprox)
It's really better to also have partitions for /var, /usr y /tmp? o some of them? and, in that case, wich size should i give them? because i don't want to make them too small, but i don't want to waste disk space neither.
Adn that takes me to my second question, wich filesystem is better for each partitionn? in many places, i read taht JFS its good for /var or that XFS if better for /home and big files
I thinked to use something like this:
        * /boot (ext2)
        * / (JFS)
        * swap
        * /home (XFS)
Is a good design? or should i use other filesystem like reiserfs, etc... and for /var, /usr and /tmp partition, wich one should i use?
    Thank you
Ps: This Pc is gonna be a desktop pc
Ps2: sorry for my bad english. it is not my real lenguage
Reason of edit: added the swap partition. I forgot it

    thanks everybody for the help,
kaola_linux wrote:@Thalskarth - it's better to have /var especially if you're using ext3 or other filesystems which was designed for larger files as your partition for /home and /.  Having a seperate partition for /var would be nice (backup purposes and reinstalling without downloading the entire package whole over again). 5gb would be sufficient for your /var, anyway you can always resize it to your needs.
so, a 5gb partition in reiserfs would be OK for a /var

Lot of people also use XFS which is known to have better performance with huge files. I think EXT3 offers a good balance...because I am never sure whether my home partition will have all huge files or not..same with my external drive...so i just use EXT3
If you have a specific partition for movies or some video/audio editing that you do..you may wanna consider XFS too. I don't do all that...so I have never used XFS. I wouldn't know the exact performance difference between ext3 and XFS.
Yes, in many places i red that XFS is better for big files. But i couldn't fine wich is the meaning of "big file". Does it mean a 200 mg file? or a 4.4gb one??
the same applies to reiserFs, what is a small file? a 1mg one or a 4kb one?
I have alwayes used ext3, i thinked in XFS and JFS just to give them a try.

Inxsible wrote:One thing that makes me wanna keep EXT3 is that EXT4 is coming out (soon?) and you can upgrade from 3 to 4 without having to reformat and having to make backups of your current data.
really is cominf soon? i didn't think in ext4 beacuse many places said that was in development for many years... meybe they were a bit out-of-date
Edit: i search in the wiki and it says that since 11 october 2008, ext4 is "stable" and is been included since kernel 2.6.28 as stable realase, is to early to prove it? or it better to wait a while??
    thanks.
and, does anyone try the JFS one?
