Loose ethernet cable connection on MBP 2.33

I have a new Macbook Pro 2.33 and the ethernet connection is loose. A lot of cables don't click in and stay. They pull out easily. Anyone else having this issue?
MacBook Pro 2.33   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

My wife and I both have 2.33 C2D MacBook Pros purchased at the same time (last November) and we both started having this problem a couple of months ago.
I have tried about a dozen cables in each, ranging from hand-made at work to solid-cast with strain reliefs and all slip out of the MBP sockets if you tilt them slightly up or down. This is a royal pain since though the AirportExterme-N is nice, it is no gigabit to our graphics file server.
As long as I can see it is not just something I am doing wrong I will feel more confident hauling them both into the Apple Store.

  • Can I connect a 5th gen extreme as a bridge/repeater to a non-apple router without an ethernet cable connection?  How?

I currently have a motorola surfboard cable modem/router (dual N) that works for all our wireless devices (PCs and MACBOOK) except that our ipad 2 which drops video streaming in the livingroom (works great in the office and bedroom).  I'm hoping to purchase a new 5th gen airport extreme and set it up in the living room for the ipad 2 as a repeater/bridge (I think that is the same function) but don't want to have a ethernet cable connecting the motorola to the airport extreme.  Is it possible?  How?  Since the ipad 2 works in other rooms, I don't think it is the ipad 2.

Sorry, but Apple products would not be compatible with your Motorola modem/router using wireless only.
If you need to do this using wireless only, you might want to check with your Internet service provider to see if they have a Motorola product that would be compatible for the purpose that you need.
If you are able to permanently connect the AirPort Extreme to the Motorola modem/router using a wired Ethernet connection, the AirPort Extreme could be configured to provide more wireless coverage that way.

  • What is the process for connecting ethernet.  Have ethernet cable connected to stereo received for internet radio and Blue Ray. However Network System Preferences indicates ethernet not connected and has red dot to left.  Note Airport wireless is working.

What is the process for connecting airport extreme ethernet?  I have ethernet cables connected to stereo receiver for internet radio and another to blue ray player.  The system preference network indicates "ethernet not connected" with red dot to left of this message.  The airport wireless works and has green dot to left of it.  The stereo receiver and blue ray player do not respond and give message not connect to internet.  Thank you.  /  cfpirate

It worked for me finally. I took out the DNS numbers in airport admin utility, and restarted the airport express. I do not remember putting the DNS numbers in, I wonder from where the airport express got those numbers.
    After restarting, it worked.
    Thanks!

  • Mac Mini won't print via ethernet cable connected to airport extreme

Hi. Thanks for your input in advance. Am about to start throwing things around. I have an Airport Extreme based network which is working fine. The printer is a new HP L7590 which connects to the network with a USB cable connection to the Airport Extreme. Those with laptops and wireless cards are able to print no problem. However my Mac Mini, a 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 is connected to the printer using a ethernet cable connected to the Airport Extreme. All was working perfectly until I upgraded from Panther to Tiger. I am now running 10.4.11. Now the Mini will not print. The jobs keep stopping. I have removed the printer and try to add it again. The print browser page finds the printer okay and lists it as connecting via Bonjour, but when you tell it to add it, it starts 'searching for new drivers' and then 'gathering printer information' and then it stops responding and I have to force quit it. Any suggestions?? I have already tried all the online mac help suggestions.

Actually it transpires that the G4 laptops are not printing either now.

  • Ethernet cable connection of MacBook Pro to G5

I have been following the Finder Help guide to connect my G5 to my MacBook Pro. I found the four step guide under the query of "connecting computers". The first three steps are unambiguous: -
    1, connect the cable.
2, Open Sharing preferences on both computers and turn on Personal File sharing. Note Computer name for the computers.
3, On one of the computers, choose Go> connect to server and then click Browse.
However 4 is not so clear: - Double click the other computer in the window and enter your password if necessary.
My questions are double click what and in which window?

Hi. Better come clean and say that I don't use this route for networking - the LAN here is via a router to Vista & XP... So I can't test your exact set-up.
However, I think Apple are steering the User along a different path for a simple two-Mac, ethernet cable-connected 'network', which is inherently physically secure, to overcome the (deliberate) limitation of OS X that only the 'Public' folder is shared on a potentially 'open' network; see the Admin User-Connect to Server 'workaround' further down the page here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106224
Personally - on this LAN, with 10.4.11, I use(d - see note below) Sharepoints
    http://hornware.com/sharepoints/
which enables the sharing of your choice of folders/drives - the User on the networked Mac does not have to be Admin - and then connect in Finder > Go > Network.
Please post again if you have any questions. Good Luck.
Note - Networking is somewhat "different" in 10.5

  • Can i run a printer off the ethernet cable connection without hurting the imac or is the ethernet slot only for internet connection?

can i run a printer off the ethernet cable connection without hurting the imac or is the ethernet slot only for internet connection?

    Hi, Alan -
How can I connect to both printer (HP 4050n, via direct connection) and internet (via LAN), as my iMac has only one R45 port?
You can, but you'll need to expand your cabling a bit.
You'll need to get an intermediate ethernet hub, switch, or router. That device sits alone, with the Mac, your printer, and your modem/LAN plugged into it.
If you are already using a router, either separate or in combination with the modem (many modems have a built-in router), then you just need a hub or switch.
I use an ethernet switch (10/100/1000) to let both my Macs (a 2010 iMac and an elderly G4 DA model) use my HP4000n printer and my modem. The ethernet switch is a passive device, meaning there's no setup nor instructing it required - it's truly plug-and-play. All four items (two Macs, printer, and modem) are plugged into it via ethernet; both Macs have full-time independent access to the printer and the modem.

Have you set both to never sleep?
Is the source (old) Mac's software up to date (including the Migration Assistant for Mac OS X Snow Leopard update)?
Is the old Mac healthy?  Have you run Verify Disk on it lately?
The estimates are wildly inaccurate under the best of circumstances.  How long has it been stuck?

  • Net connection trouble: "No Ethernet cable connected or the device is not responding"

    Hello
I have been plagued by a dropping Net connection for a couple of months, and as it has been getting worse lately I have tried to sort out the problem.
I have simplyfied my connection between the computers and the VSDL fiber modem by bypassing my AirPort Express and Ethernet hub and connecting the three computers directly to the built in ports on the modem.
Since I did that a new error message has started appearing on my Mac Mini, saying that I have no Ethernet cable connected to the modem, or the device is not responding. At the moment I have two of the machines connected, and the Mac Book Air seems to work without problems. There are lights on the Ethernet ports on the modem, and they are lighting up for the iBook even when the Mac Mini connection drops. When the Mac Mini connection drops the lights go off on its Ethernet port on the modem.
This seems to point to some sort of trouble with the Mac Mini. Is there a way to monitor what's going on? Can I use Terminal, for instace? It can't be the settings, and it cant' be the cable, so it must be related to the hardware I suppose. I am using DHCP to connect to the modem.
The connection drops arbitrarily, sometimes for long periods of time, and then comes back up again by itself.
Any ideas for trouble shooting etc?
    Best
    Hans Karlsson

Thanks again. Unfortunately, the problems are back again. Had a stable connection and connected the AirPort again. Everything was working fine. Then all of a sudden the connection dropped again today.h
Connected a LAN cable directly to my MacBook Air and got the connection to work immediately.
Took that cable and connected to my MacMini, again, connection came back immediately.
The AirPort (in Brigde Mode) is also connected, but gives me a blinking orange light, and the same "no cable or (modem) is not responding" message again.
I guess this must rule out hardware problems in the computers.
Ligth for the LAN cable port on the modem connected to AirPort is dead. Moved the cable to another port, light still dead.
Shut down AirPort Express, still same orange blinking light when I switched it on.
I now suspect there is something going on with the AirPort Express. Just bought it, and I had the same problem with it's predecessor, but...
Is there any way to trouble shoot the AirPort Express?
I can connect to it Wirelessly, But AirPort Utility says it has been removed from the Network. In the Network Preferences it says it has a self-assigned IP. For Network Settings I get green lights for everything except Network Settings, which gives me a yellow light. It also says the Internet connetcion is working correctly.
Indeed, when I made the direct Ethernet connection inactive I still get a working connection over WiFi, in spite of the blinking orange light on the AirPort and a yellow light for Network settings in Prefereces....
In the console things look normal:

Hello, I'm trying to connect my new TiVo XL4 box to my home network via an ethernet cable connection to my Airport Express but the TiVo box is not seeing the network. I have a green light emanating from the Airport Express so it is connected. Please advise.

If you have not already done so, I suggest that you temporarily disconnect the Ethernet cable from the AirPort Express that goes to the Tivo box.
Instead, turn off the wireless on a laptop and connect the laptop to the Ethernet port on the Express. See if you can get an Internet connection on the laptop.
If you still cannot get an Internet connection on the laptop, try another Ethernet cable that you know is working correctly.
    Post back on your results.

  • Ethernet cable connected to machine which has beco...

We currently have the yellow Ethernet cable connected to a desktop PC, and one or more laptops successfully accessing broadband. The system is BT Home Hub 3.0A. The desktop has now become unserviceable and we will likely dispose of it. Does this mean that we can just leave the Ethernet cable hanging 'free' once we dispose of the desktop, as the fact that the cable is now connected to a dead machine does not seem to be affecting the ability of other systems (laptops, phones) to access broadband?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It won't make any difference leaving the cable.  Each ethernet port on the hub is independent of the others, and the WiFi signal is independent of the wired ethernet.
Of course, you could tidy things up if you want to by removing the cable completely, but the other computers won't care either way.

  • I need an ethernet cable connection to a non-wireless device that isn't near my current airport express. Can I buy an extra one to plug in near the non wireless device to receive the wireless data and put the signal out in ethernet form?

I need an ethernet cable connection to a non-wireless device that isn't near my current airport express. Can I buy an extra one to plug in near the non wireless device to receive the wireless data and put the signal out in ethernet form?

    Yes, you can.
This is a special feature of the AirPort Express 802.11n.  You will have to set it up "manually" to "enable Ethernet clients".
If  your "main" AirPort Express is an 802.11n version, it is also possible to setup the second Express to "extend a wireless network" to provide additional wireless coverage in addtion to enabling the Ethernet port.
If you need the steps, post back to let us know what operating system you are using on the Mac or PC that will be used for the setup of the new AirPort Express.

  • My TC won't startup with ethernet cables connected.

It will start up fine w/out ethernet cables, but with ethernet, it won't startup.  I have two wired connections, my thunderbolt display/mbp and my cannon printer.
It will sit with amber light solid.
When I disconnect the two ethernet cables, it will startup fine.  Then I connect the two cables and everything is good.
This is a new from apple store today 2tb TC.  It's taken about 2 hours to get it setup until now I've figured out the ethernet cable issue.  Is there a fix?  I'm probably going to exchange it tomorrow or in the next couple of days if there's no fix provided.

Well, it's working fine today.  I'll continue to try it over the next couple of days and if it happens more, I'll take it back for an exchange.  It happend quite a few times last night.
I have apple care for my mbp, so this should be covered on it.  About 1.5 years left.
    Thanks.
I'll update this post if I end up needing to exchange it.

  • OS X 10.4 to Windows XP via direct ethernet cable connection

    Hi,
I'm trying to help my friend connect her new MacBook to her old Windows PC notebook so she can transfer her music and other files. They are connected via a single Ethernet cable. (I spent an hour searching the Web and for the life of me I can't find a clear, easy-to-follow procedure for how to do this; even the Switch 101 website only provides half of the information needed).
anyway... Her PC's IP address is 169.254.x.x (self-assigned I guess) but her Mac can still connect to it. Upon entering in her credentials she sees error code -36. I asked her to follow http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301580 but it still does not work; she still gets an error.
Ideas? Any help or links to make this easier would be greatly appreciated. If at all possible, I don't want her to take it to an Apple Genius, I don't want her to go and buy/download extra freeware/software/hardware to do the job - unless I'm missing something big here, OS X and Windows XP should be able to do the job with a minimum of fuss, and if the instructions are straightforward enough I'd like to make a document showing people how to do this sort of thing.

    Peter,
Based on your post I see that you are trying to transfer files through and ethernet cable. I don't think this is possible, correct me if I'm wrong, with just a plain ethernet cable.
Try using a Cross-Over cable. It's easy to find. You can find it at your local electrionics store, such as Best Buy or CompUSA.
There is also another method besides tranferring with an ethernet cable. You can use CD's and DVD's, (DVDs work a lot better for space). This will take a lot longer with a bit more effort and time. But, you can get the job done.
    Good luck.
Remember to mark as helpful or solve.

  • "added time cap to existing network" and can't get Ethernet cable connection to Time cap to work...

I added a new time capsule to my existing wifi network. Everything initialized well and time machine could see the TC. I tried to connect a cable directly to the TC for the first backup... But the cable connection doesn't see the TC. Ideas?

If you used join a network then the TC turns off its ethernet ports.
