Loose power cord/plug?

Hi All,
I have a problem with my iMac. I just purchased it brand new about a week ago. And I noticed that when I insert the power plug into the back of the screen it's very loose and wiggly.
I'm not able to start up the entire computer sometimes b/c the plug falls out of place so easily. I can't even turn the screen around w/o the plug losing place.
Nothing seems to be wrong with the plug itself or the prongs...any suggestions on what to do to resolve this issue? It's frustrating!

It may not be all the way in. The flat circle part is supposed to be flush with the back of the iMac. Put one hand on the front near the bottom to hold it steady and try pushing harder. It should feel almost like it snaps in.

MBP random shutdown even with power cord plugged in

My MacBook Pro (original) has now randomly shut down 5 times since I installed 10.5.6 the week before Christmas. 4 of those 5 times happened with the power cord plugged in, the green indicator light on and the installed battery fully charged. I have two batteries and it has happened with each of them at least twice. Yesterday I got my first shutdown while on battery only. After each shutdown I was able to restart the computer and it operated normally, even the one on battery only.
These shutdowns are fast and complete. There is no warning of any kind. The screen just goes blank. It is not sleeping, there is no pulsing light on the front. Using the start key begins the process from scratch with the Apple "startup chime."
The occurrences have gotten more frequent. The first two were within 24 hours of when I installed 10.5.6 and they happened within several hours of each other. Both of these were with the power cord attached and fully charged batteries. I swapped the battery after the first one. When it happened again, I swapped them again.
The next time I had the problem was 1/30 (last Friday). The only significant software installation I had done between installing 10.5.6 and then was to install iLife '09 on 1/28. All software updates had been installed in a timely manner. Friday the laptop was plugged into external power and the battery was fully charged, but I don't know which battery was installed.
2/1 I had an issue where my computer couldn't locate the OS file on startup so I did a archive and install. It operated normally since then until yesterday, 2/4 when I had two shutdowns. The first I had the computer on external power and a fully charged battery. The second was the ONLY time I have had the shutdown occur while on battery power only. I was on a flight when the second shutdown occurred. I had used all the power in the battery that was installed when the first shutdown happened (down to about 11 minutes remaining). I then swapped batteries without shutting the computer down. The system rebuilt itself normally and I began working on iPhoto. About an hour later it just shutdown. I was able to restart the computer normally and used it for another 45 minutes or so before I shut it down for landing.
I called Apple Care this morning and they advised me to get an appointment with a Genius. I resist being without my laptop but will try this and let them look over the console log to see if they can find anything.
I have done all the basics, reset the PMU, zapped the PRAM and repaired disk permissions. The next thing I am going to do is to calibrate both batteries. I doubt this will have any impact on the issue because most of the shutdowns have occurred with external power connected. I just haven't done this in a while.
Any ideas out there? Anyone have a similar problem?
I have another issue on my Mac Pro since installing 10.5.6 and my wife's iMac G5 has a completely different issue since installing 10.5 (I didn't install this OS until last week so I could get the new iLife on it). Seems like this latest OS version is a bit buggy or at least incompatible with a lot of Apple's products in different ways.

Service was due and now that I saw the machine fail 4 times in a day doing the same process I knew I could duplicate the issue on demand. That's a big bonus.
Called Apple Care yesterday morning and the guy I spoke with read over the notes on my case after I told him what happened the day before (black friday, 4 shutdowns). While he didn't transfer me to a Product Specialist, he did talk to one for quite a while (I was on hold for about 20 minutes while he did this). He said I could ship it to Apple and they would look at it or I could take it to an Apple Store or Authorized Service Center. Thinking this was the next step I had secured a time at the Carlsbad Apple Store for late that afternoon (my usual & closest store, Escondido, was booked all weekend). They told me to take it in and reference the case number. The Product Specialist thought it sounded like a logic board and would duly note that diagnosis in the case history.
After the conversation ended I decided to make sure I could cause the failure. So I started the process (threw out the face.db from the iPhoto Library package and opened iPhoto whereupon iPhoto begins a scan of the images for faces. Having over 12,000 images gives it a lot of work). This time I decided to monitor the workings of the laptop using iStat Pro (freeware widget download & I recommend making a small donation it's so good). I kept track of the processes at 5 minute intervals, the CPU usage, numerous temps AND the fan speed. The latter seemed to be the critical. Shortly after the fan speed got to 4700 the shutdown occurred. It took 36 minutes from the time I started. The fans kind of confirm to me that it could be the logic board.
I took the laptop to the Apple Store and started the process in front of the "Genius." He read through the case as well as the printed copy of this thread and other notes I brought from previous shutdowns including the data I mined from iStat Pro. He was unimpressed and thought it was a non-issue. I guess that's only fair because I was unimpressed with him. He figures it's my system because of a software conflict somewhere. His answer was to do a clean install and reinstall all the software from the original disks. I told him I have spent over 50 hours on this issue to date and that what he was suggesting would take at least that much and guarantee nothing if it's a database issue...duh! Disagreement. Oh, and he also doubted it would fail just from making it work.
43 minutes after starting the process, well after my "Genius" went home for the day (I was his last appointment), the failure occurred. The "Genius" he handed me off to was working with someone else next to where I was sitting. When the fans hit 4700 rpm I told her it was going to happen soon and as I finished my sentence the failure occurred! Cool.
They have the machine and I'll let you know what they do.

Overheating GPU while power cord plugged in.

Simply put, my laptop's GPU temp skyrockets to 60+ degrees when playing anything in full screen with the AC power cord plugged in to charge the battery... even games like Diablo 2 with low graphic quality.
When I run the games without the cord and simply off the battery life, the temp stays below 45 degrees, but the games run kinda choppy (like Fallout 3 and Dead Space).
Any known reason why it does this, or possible fix... or does it sound like something might be wrong with my video card fan?

GPU temps of 60+C (range 60-80) are not excessive for gaming. Go to you GPU model website and check the temp parameters.

Qosmio X770-13H loose power cord

Hi!
I recently bought a Qosmio X770-13H, and so far everything has been working great (apart from playing 3D movies, but that's another story). There's a minor/slight annoyance and worry about this laptop, however. The power cord doesn't seem to tighten where it enters the laptop, and it's very easy to wiggle. This leads to the power cord falling out of the laptop very often.
Right now it's not too much of a problem, however in the long run I worry that this will become a huge problem, as this most likely will wear on the socket. Is this a normal flaw with these laptops or is there something wrong with mine?

The Power cord should not be loose when plugged in the laptop. Although i have a different model X770-11C and not your X770-13H , i am pretty sure that it must NOT be loose.
Asked Toshiba in 2 countries and i had the same answer so i give it to you here.
When you plug in the power cord it should be firm and not loose. So in your case you probably have to take it back for a replacement or a fix from your dealer.
Good luck, i don't think it will be hard to fix this.

Can I keep the power cord plugged in when battery reaches 100%l?

I'm assuming the battery stops recharging when it reaches 100%, right? In other words I can keep the power chord plugged in without any risk of "overcharging". Correct?

Hp mini display only comes on with power cord plugged in

I have a mini 210-3000 that fell on the floor a while back. After that the display will only come on (the system is completely booted up) with the power supply plugged into the jack. The cord doesn't need to be plugged into the wall, just plugged into the notebook. Everything else works perfectly.
Took to local repair guy and he couldn't figure it out.

You could check this document on testing and calibrating the battery using HP Support Assistant. It gives HP Battery Check results with links that could help.
Have you removed the battery and inspected the connections?

HP G62 Will Not Boot With Power Cord Plugged In

I have an HP G62 laptop that is about four years old. I've had a couple of problems with it before that were resolved relatively satisfactorily, however five or six months ago I started having a new issue. The laptop will not boot with the charging cord plugged in, whether there is a battery in it or not. Nor will it return from sleep mode (screen black, status light on the power button flashing) with the charging cord plugged in, whether there is a battery in it or not. It simply shuts down and I end up with an error screen the next time I boot up. I have tried other charging cords and it has been the same, however the cord will still charge the battery. This means I have to charge the battery, unplug the cord, boot up the computer. This annoyance is worsened by the fact that the battery is old and unable to hold charge for very long at all and I fear one day even the battery won't be enough to boot the computer.Can I fix the power cord issue? Should I buy a new battery? Or let my computer give up the ghost and scrounge for a new one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A few months ago it started shutting down on its own randomly. Now, it won't start unless the power cord is plugged in. Even when it says its fully charged, and I unplug it, it dies. Do I just need a new battery or is this another problem?

Loose Power Cord?

Apple TV up and working great (after some initial syncing issues, resolved by Apple Care), but I noticed the power cord is really loose in the back. My fear is it could come out if anything touches it or the base station even a little bit. This true for anyone else? Is it a defect?

Well, I wound up exchanging the unit, sure that something was amiss. The salesperson and I checked the new unit to make sure I wouldn't have the same problem. We both noted that you need to really push it in hard, but then it is quite secure. So, chances are I just wasn't pushing the cord in hard enough with the original unit (I didn't want to damage anything). Anyway, onward & upward. Thanks for the help.

6555 Power cord plug problems

When I plug in the power cord it does not make a solid connection. The only way I can get it to work is by canting the cord, by wrapping the cord around the phone or by taping the phone down and pulling the cord to the side.
Is this a systematic problem? Am I the only one? If not has anyone found a solution?

your better of getting new charger this seems to be an issue with the new smaller pins on the charger or it could be an issue with the jack in the phone try a new charger first

Loose power cord FIXED

I had this same issue. And there are now over 100 posts on the problem With the slightest movement of the laptop the plug just fell out. I sent the laptop in to HP for a repair but the same problem returned. A new cord might help but the problem turned out to be the poor quality of HP parts. (The wifi card/driver was inferior too).
Here is the best solution. Rather then send HP any more money I tried a fix. I used the CUTTING BLADES on a common plier to VERY LIGHTLY crimp the plug on the power cord about 1/4 inch back from the tip. No need to even leave a mark on the plug, just use very light pressure all around the outer circumferance. Use a press it and test it approach until it holds and stays in the jack. Now the plug FINALLY stays in the jack as it should. You can be assured HP will not issue a recall, so do this. And don't buy HP again.

Macbook will not start up with power cord plugged in

my macbook core duo, wont startup anymore with the power cord.
It does work with a battery though. But the problem is that the cord is not charging the battery anymore and not even giving power to the machine.
the light on the cord is green. I tried with another power cord, it does the same.
i even changed the dc-in board, with no luck.
any ideas ?

I have the exact same problem. There is a buzz from the region where the power connection is, and I'm afraid it is a power hardware issue. Since the optical drive already quit on this first gen MacBook, I think it's time to chuck this lemon.

IBook whirs whenever power cord plugged in?

So this started happening out of nowhere. There's a buzzing/whirring noise that comes out of my laptop whenever I put in the power cord. At first I though it was a battery or cord issue. I replaced both, and it still makes that sound. Furthermore, it only gives me a charged symbol for the battery life, and won't charge the battery. Help? I really can't afford a new laptop right now, so any assistance is appreciated.

Fastest way to determine if the power cord is defective_remove the battery and try to power on with only cord attached.

Power cord plug in overheated, black smoke and extremely hot...

My daughter has had the Macbook for less than a year. She says it has always sparked when plugging in/out but tonight
black smoke started coming out of the box where the prongs are. I am extremely upset...this could have caused a fire.
I understand we can probably get a new one as it's under warranty, my concern is still the fact that it overheated in the
first place.
We do not have an Apple store in our small town and she needs a replacement asap. Should I just call the support
helpline? I'd like to think they'd take this seriously...

Except that it is normal under many circumstances.
Any capacitive load on a circuit will tend to resist changes in voltage, with the result that plugging in a capacitive load will often cause a small spark to form. Similarly, an inductive load will tend to resist changes in current, which is why unplugging a running electric motor will also often cause a small spark to form. The transformer in a power adaptor, when connected at the other end, is a capacitive load.
The trick, of course, is being able to differentiate between these effects and sparks caused by short-circuits in the socket or plug, which can be extremely dangerous fire hazards. Certainly if there are other indicators of a short-circuit, like heat being generated, then it must be checked out. In fact, if there's any uncertainty, it should probably be checked out.
However, explaining that there can be sparks in a perfectly functioning socket is not the same as telling people that sparking can, or should, be ignored. If anything, it's telling them not to ignore it, but to investigate it.

Battery not charging and makes weird noise when power cord plugged in

I have an issue that a few people have mentioned here, my PowerBook won't recognize when a power adapter is plugged in. I've bought two power adapters recently (that I probably DON'T need now) so I know it's not a bad adapter.
For a few months it has been switching back and forth between wall and battery power but usually only when I was really working the machine either video or photo editing but it has been getting worse.
The thing that is happening to me that I haven't seen mention is my computer makes a fast ticking noise when it is plugged in. Once I unplug it, it stops. And while it was off and plugged in the computer was making a weird whistling noise.
Is this a bad DC/sound card issue and does Apple still do these types of repairs at a Genius Bar or am I on my own?

I know exactly what you mean. My 17 inch PB has been quite "noisy" since I received it, but i wrote it off (I was too ecstatic that work bought me a PB). Just recently the sound has been getting louder. I'm starting to think the sound was actually electrical interference that was being picked up by the speakers. Actually today I was in a meeting (speakers still working) and the squeeling sound was getting louder (almost embarrasing loud considering I'm the apple diehard in a pc dominated office). I decided to reset my computer (not something I do often)It seemed to subside for a bit.
Well today, it looks as though my speakers have died on me. I'm not getting any sounds out of them. I'm not a newb when it comes to macs (been using macs since os9, about '99) so I've tried everything I can think of to get the speakers to come back. I believe I'm experiencing a hardware failure (reset many times, check all settings).
Hmph.....Pretty frustrating. No iTunes during work makes me sad. I'll have to check and see if my external sound still works tomorrow.
