Loose screw rattling inside the new mini

Hi, this is my first mini and as much as I love the look of this little computer
I am a little bit afraid of quality because I have just found loose little black screw inside
rattling around while moving the unit. I turned off the machine an opened the
ram access cover allowing the screw to fall out. Now my question was it spare screw which apple worker
accidentally lost or it got screwed out from some part inside?
Nothing what I can see from underneath is missing a screw though.

Most probably an extra screw, not a loose one come undone. Imagine the poor Chinese assembly worker trying to match the quota for her shift. She fumbles a tiny black screw whilst positioning it, and it drops off the magnetised screwdriver. Does she stop the line flow to and call the line manager to tip the screw out or grab another quick, and screw it home?
Nevertheless, insist on a replacement, it's Apple's problem not yours.
Let us know what response you get please.

It pains me to hear about your experience with the Home Phone Connect.  This device usually works seamlessly and is a great alternative to a landline phone.  It sounds like we've done our fair share of work on your account here.  I'm going to go ahead and send you a Private Message so that we can access your account and review any open tickets for you.  I look forward to speaking with you.

  • Upgrade 09 model with the new mini display port?

Anyway to upgrade my 09 macbook pro with the new mini display port that supports both audio and video instead of just video?

If you are referring to Thunderbolt, no.

  • Will the Airport from the new mini work in the old mini.

I have a MacMini (Intel 2008 model) and I don't use the Airport in it. I want to remove the Airport in that mini and install it in my old MacMini (PPC 2006 model) which doesn't have Airport right now it has a usb wireless stick. I gave that old mini to my mother and she keeps forgetting that the sick is for her internet and removing it. it will also free up that usb port since right now there is no free usb port. Will the Airport from the new mini work in the old mini. I'm not afraid opening them I already installed ram myself in both.

I assume the old PPC you have is a Mac Mini 1.42GHZ or 1.5GHZ G4 from 2005/2006, which should have shipped with AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR pre-installed. What happened to it?
Anyway, both Mac mini models support Airport Extreme cards, but looking at the repair guides from ifixit.com, the Airport extreme cards look to be different in size.
    Mac Mini G4:
    Mac Mini Intel:
For the PowerPC G4 model here is a guide on installing the Airport card: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-Mac-mini-PowerPC-AirPort-Extreme-C ard/271/1
For the Intel model: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-Mac-mini-Model-A1176-AirPort-Extre me/1112/1
I don't think they would fit, but Good luck.

  • Does the new Mini support DVI DL?

I may have missed this question, but:
The new Mini has a Mini DVI port; does the Mini support DVI DL?
    Pete F

The only way the new mini can support a DL-DVI display is through the Mini DisplayPort using the $99 Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-link DVI Adapter. The actual DVI port on the mini is single-link only.

  • Can I anchor the new mini-player to one screen while keeping iTunes in another on iTunes 11?

I like having my main iTunes window on another screen while I'm browsing so that it doesn't distract me when I'm working. But I like the new mini-player & I ilke the fact that it notifies which song is playing each time it skips to the next one. So what I'd like is to keep the mini-player anchored to one screen (on Mountan Lion) while keeping the main iTunes window or the album artwork window in another one where I only need to go when I want to interact with iTunes in more detail.
This way I can keep the mini-player tucked away in one corner while I browse & I have quick access to the controls & the song info if I need it without having the full screen there. I know that I don't need to have the main iTunes window open all the time & I can simply Option-Command-M to toggle between the 2. But I'd like to have (if possible) the main window open as well on another screen. I have dragged only the mini-player to another screen but iTunes is anchored to the other one (via the dock options) so when I restart iTunes, both players (main & mini) open in the 2nd (non-browser) screen by default.

Thanks for the replies. The only problem with this solution is that any time I restart iTunes, it'll revert back to normal settings and both will pop up on the same desktop. As opposed to when you anchor it to a particluar desktop so that it open there not matter where you are when you launch the software.
I realise as I nitpick over this that may not be a very important issue at all But I just hoped there might be a solution to it. Thanks anyway.

  • The new mini keyboard + volume key or F12

I just got rid of the clunky black keyboard that came with the computer for the new mini keyboard that Apple offers. On the old keyboard the F12 functioned as the volume which it is set up for. Since attaching the mini keyboard the F12 functions as the Dashboard which it is NOT set up for. Is there no way to change this? All settings are same as original keyboard.

Go to Sys Prefs/Keyboard/Keyboard Shortcuts/Dashboard & Dock. Is the Dashboard box ticked?
Yours could be different because I have no Leopard kit to check.

  • Can the 30" monitor run on the new mini?

Can the 30" monitor run on the new mini and is the new mini more powerful/faster than my current original 20" iMac intel duo?
Thanks in advance for everyone's feedback!
PS. I know the 30" is due for a refresh and would wait....

You would need the mini-DVI to Dual-Link DVI adapter, but the 30" would work with that up to it's maximum 2560x1600 resolution.
However, while the new mini will be a little faster than your existing 20" iMac (assuming by 'original' you mean the 2.0GHz 'early 2006' model), it's not going to offer you a significant performance boost. The mini would offer you greater maximum RAM (4Gb instead of your current 2Gb limit) and has a significantly faster bus and greater L2 cache, and it has 11n wifi rather than your existing 11g, plus a number of other minor enhancements, but you need to consider whether the benefits in terms of better performance and greater flexibility of buying this system, and the display to go with it, are sufficient to justify the costs.
Much may depend on which software you are using, or plan to use. If you are habitually running legacy software which needs Rosetta, and often need more than one such application open at a time, your maximum of 2Gb RAM may be limiting system performance overall by quite a bit. A mini could help significantly simply by allowing you more RAM. Alternatively, if you are running little more than basic and common applications such as web browsers, email, etc, and have just 1Gb RAM, you might find that a better investment would be to increase the RAM in your iMac to 2Gb, and keep using that for a while longer - perhaps while you decide exactly what your future needs are going to be and thus which hardware is best suited to meet them.
Alternatively, if you are just feeling that it's time for the iMac to retire and you want a new system, the new mini looks to be a very credible choice for a wide range of users - and pretty good value too!

  • Will the new Mini do Core Image?

I am waiting for the Mini upgrade. There already has been a silent upgrade where these Minis don't have CoreImage compliant graphics cards - which is ridiculous.
So, in the end when there's the official upgrade. Will the new Minis be able to do Core Image?

Sorry, but no one outside of Apple knows anything about future product releases. Anything anyone here would post would be pure speculation which isn't allowed here (the Discussions are for technical support on existing products). There are a number of rumor sites which you can read, but as to whether any rumors they report have any validity, your guess will be as good as ours.
As to the currently shipping Mac mini that reportedly has some minor feature bumps, it apparently still has the Radeon 9200 and so still will not support Core Image.

  • Transferring programs to the new mini

I have purchase a new mini and want to transfer programs from my older MacPro before recycling it. Problem is, it's 4 yrs old and I have run upgrades via downloads and no longer have discs - but then again the new mini doesn't have an optical drive...so how do I do this?

A 2008 or even a 2006 Mac Pro should still fetch a pretty good price used. They are hard to come by here and actually the 2008 is probably still worth as much or more than a new Mac Mini. If you don't mind sharing your general geograpic location, (no pressure) I'm here in Califorina and have been looking around for a used 2008 Mac Pro for sometime.

  • The new mini ipad

Hi, i am new to tablets and want to buy my first one, (7''ish). I'm considering the new Ipad mini coming out because it's one of the few that have back facing cameras for stills and video. But the difference between the 16Gb and 32 Gb for storage is quite high. I like to back up all of my music, videos and photo's ect on to pen drives rather than a exterior hard drive. My question is; by using the lightning to USB connector would it be possible to connect the Ipad mini to a pen drive on the move and read & write to it for extra storage and even stream video to and from it?
Hope this doesn't come across as a stupid question as i'm a bit of a novice with hand held devices.
    Many thank's.

With the full-sized iPads you've only been able to use the camera connection kit to copy photos and videos from SD cards, cameras, and some flash drives (a lot require too much power) to the iPad's Photos app (and the card/flashdrive needs to have a DCIM directory off its root with the photos and videos underneath with 8 character filenames plue extension) - you haven't been able to copy content off the iPad with it nor to copy music to the iPad with it. I doubt that that will change with the mini-iPad.
There are a number of wifi-enabled drives now on the market that allow you to stream content to the iPad (and I assume that they will work with the mini-iPad) e.g. Seagate GoFlex Satellite etc.

  • Is there any way to find my new Mac Mini's Mac Address before I complete the initialization of the new Mini?

I am starting my new Mac Mini for the first time. (My first Mac was a classic 128K that I upgraded myself to 512K back in 1985. My most recent Mac is a G4 466 Mhz unit that I am eventually replacing with the new Mac Mini.)
I hit a snag when I got to the point where the Mini wants to connect to my home network. The network has my G4 and a MacBook on it. I have my linksys WRT54G Router set to accept only those MAC Addresses that I have authorized. This is because there are several neighborhood networks that are within range of mine.
At this point I can either disable this filtering for a short time or find the MAC address of my new Mini before I initialize it.
Can I find the MAC address before I initialize the Mini?
    Thanks,
    -Joe

The serial number and the part number were on the outside of the shipping container. Nothing on the bottom of the unit at all. I worked around this problem by temporarily disabling the MAC Address or hardware address filter on my router until I was able to look up the MAC Address on the machine, entered it to the MAC Address list then I re-enabled the MAC Address filter on the router.
    Thanks for the response, anyway.
