Loosing Credit by the Minute on Iphone

Hi everyone I am in desperate need of some help. I have just got an Iphone 3G and use pay as you go on the Orange Network. I topped up with £15.00 pounds and within 2 days it was down to £3. I had made 4 calls and sent 3 texts. I have read that the iphone eats credit because it is always connecting to the internet is this true? and how do i stop it from continuosly connecting to the internet.
Also I have Enable 3G, Data Roaming switched off but cannot switch the EDGE off. I have read that the new OS4 allows you to turn off the Cell Data I am currently running OS 3.1.3 which is unlocked. What I want to know is it worth downloading the OS4 and turning off the Cell Data and will this stop the Iphone from constantly connecting to the internet and eating my credit.
Sorry if this is long winded but the essence of it is that my Iphone is eating my credit.
Thank You for taking the time to read my post.

@mike,
It was recently reported that Apple is collecting location information from iPhones on a daily basis. That may be part of the reason for your mystery data charges.
Here's the key paragraph from a recent TUAW story:
+"The biggest takeaway is that Apple does collect location data from your iPhone -- every 24 hours, an encrypted batch of locations for cell towers, Wi-Fi access points, and GPS coordinates are hooked up to a zip code and sent back to Apple. This is all true -- we've heard from customers who've noticed the daily batch of information sent out over their iPhone's data plan".+
See this article for more info:

Don't even consider installing the iOS crapgrade on your iPhone 3G until you read through this thread:
