Loosing iPhoto 04 'comments' in iPhoto 09

My girlfriend has spent a lot of time over the years writing descriptions in the comments field in her iPhoto 04 library on her G5 iMac. In advance of her buying a new mac we exported a few images to my iPhoto 09 to see how they looked: one big problem, no comments come into the description field. Will this be an issue when she transfers the whole iPhoto 04 library to a new computer and latest version of iPhoto?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. iPhoto 8 (09) requires Leopard, 10.5.6, to be able to run. You will also have to upgrade your system in order to run iPhoto 8 since your profile indicates you're running 10.4.11.

So you want to move the iPhoto Library?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • I am passing down my computer to daughter what should i do not to loose iPhoto and other purchased apps

I am going to pass my computer down to my daughter. Don't want to loose apps i have put on it but would like set it up as her computer any suggestions?

She will need to use her own Apple ID which means she needs to set up the computer from scratch.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. Download and install Yosemite if the computer can run Yosemite. Otherwise, she will need to purchase her own copy of Lion and install it as an upgrade to Snow Leopard.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Backup library / transfer songs from PB to G5

ok, i have been doing my best to use mac help (one of the best things in OSX) and searching around the boards....
im not sure i have the exact answer i need.
so, I have several macs. The two main ones i use are my 17" powerbook, and my quad G5. The PB is a few years old, and has been used for ALL of my iTunes and iPhoto content - including managing all of my iPods. Needless to say, with 6 thousand images (40% are 8 mpx files) and several thousand songs, im out of space on my Powerbook. I have about 90 gigs free on my quad, as well as a FW drive w/ about 70 gigs free (of 250)~and plan on adding a 500 or 750 gig drive to the quad soon. Ultimately, i want to migrate all of my photos and songs to the G5 and clear off room on the powerbook and use that mainly as an "in the field" machine.
Im unsure if I can/should just target mode FW connect my powerbook to the Quad and drag the iPhoto and iTunes folders to the Quad. Or should I back up to MANY dvd-r's then copy each onto the G5 - which i anticipate taking a long time... The majority of my music is self ripped, and only have about 100 iTunes bought songs so far. Is either method going to cause the itunes purchased music to not play on the Quad?(both machines are authorized to my account and i frequently share the PB library through the Quad speakers.)
I have lots of media that i will be pretty upset if lost (vacation photos, work images~im a photographer/graphic artist.) and i really just want the best, most reliable way of tranferring this stuff to my G5. Seeing how many gigs worth of files i am working with, id hate to burn 20 dvds, and then have some playback issues on a different machine.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Once all these files are moved, I am planning on setting up a monthly backup of new media to disc, for safe keeping. I have just never been much of a backup person, and now am starting to worry of something happening to my powerbook HD and losing years of work.
sidenote - 99% of my music is mp3 so ID3 tags should remain for them correct? If i ever do need aiff or other fomats (which i do often for use in final cut studio), i just convert on a song to song basis. So there are very few aiff's and i dont really care if i loose those.
this new album flow in iTunes has got me trying to go back and organize years worth of songs and add artwork. its a pain, and i stress to anyone to keep up on your file naming from the get go. (when i used to import in older versions there was no get cd track names feature - at least that i knew of, so i poorly labled alot of tunes.)
thanks again for any info in advance. again, im sure this is covered often, but i searched quite a bit and couldnt really find a satisfying answer.

If photographer/graphic artist is your living, I would recommend to purchase an external drive for storage/backup ASAP.
Even if you don't do that for a living and the files are valuable for you, backup, backup, backup.
There are two kinds of computer users:
Those who experienced a HD crash
Those who will experience a HD crash
I can tell from experience (about 10 years ago) how it feels to experience a HD crash and not having a backup. I lost some important documents, so I decided to spend part of my money in backups.
Nowadays large storage devices are relatively cheap compared with costs of computers.
    Back to your questions.
The easiest way to transfer your iTunes library is to put the PB in FireWire Target Disk Mode and copy the 'iTunes Music' folder to the G5.
If you don't mind loosing the playlists, comments and ratings, just add that folder to the iTunes library on your G5.
To retain all information, use your external disk drive as an intermediate to transfer your iTunes library.
    Here is how it's done:
Follow the instructions in iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder to move your library from the PB to the FW drive.
Copy the 'iTunes Library' file (more info about the library files here) to the FW drive.
Connect the drive to the G5 and copy the 'iTunes Library' file to the proper location.
Run iTunes. It should find the library on the external drive.
Now move your music to the G5 using the instructions again.
Which method you use, the ID3 tags will not be lost.
If the G5 is authorized, it will also play all your purchased music.
As far as I know, you can simply transfer your entire 'iPhoto Library' folder to the G5 using FW target disk mode.
Holding the Option-key when launching iPhoto on the G5 will give you the option to choose the transferred library.
I don't know much about iPhoto, so if this not works, ask in the iPhoto forums.
iTunes is a bit more complicated and requires to do it in a special way.
Most (if not all) Mac suitable large capacity drives come with (limited) backup software.
I bought a Maxtor Onetouch II (300 GB) about a year ago, which came with Retrospect Express. It suites the purpose well enough for my backup needs.
If you find it too limited for your needs, upgrade to the full version of whatever backup application that comes with the drive.
If you have questions left, let us know.
    Hope this helps.

  • Installing iWeb 2.0.2 is the worst nightmare ever

When I first instal iWeb 2.0.1, all was wrong but one day started working, this was until the patch of iWeb 2.0.2 when again everything was wrong again, I do like a lot iWeb and I have a lot on my .mac account I even have 20GB of hard disk in my subscription, but this is the tip of the iceberg for me, probably the lasts weeks I have the .mac account, I have been waiting for a fix like most of iWeb users that are on this forum, and what I see is mac really not listening to the clients of iWeb, this is probably the worst Update mac has ever had, we users of mac knew that mac always test the software on the users, but when the users have a business based on their web pages like me and probably a lot of other users, then Apple is affecting third party and not the regular users.
I really don't know what to think right now of this update, but is definitely not working for a lot of users that we are desperate that Apple hear us.
I know probably Apple is having the finishing touches of Jaguar (nice) but we the ones that are affected with iWeb 2.0.2 are having way bigger problems and there is no one in Apple who really is looking at the problem.
    My sites are this ones:
    www.cinematograf.com
    www.soloenmexico.net
I wish I can continue working with Apple but if this problem persists I will be forced to leave .mac and never come back because of this bad taste on this issue, I will probably use Dreamweaver and rent a hosting plan with better things than .mac.
As you all can see I am really mad and ****** about this issue and I am shure I am not the only one.
    Do you think like me?
    Adolfo

    Jon,
When 08 came out, I Correct al my pages, I re did all of them, so that is not the problem, I even had to almost kill my whole site in order to it work perfect, that was when I had 2.0.1 then Apple send us the update for 2.0.2 and it was then when It stopped working at all.
With 2.0.1 there was problems and we all fix them as .mac told us, but with this update 2.0.2 there is nothing to fix there is probably not solution, so a lot of us are desperate, and we just wish to go back to the settings on 2.0.1 they worked fine (at least the last 2 weeks of version 2.01).
Then as you see my site: www.cinematograf.com is huge and www.soloenmexico.net (lives from the comments) (the last one has already 90 publications that makes it a 3 month old site (yes I made it with '08, in full) I can't think of loosing all the comments as that gives the site self promotion, the problem is that I had been already since "9/13/07" that I can't publish a thing it did work for a day on "9/24/07" as you can see on the site, but that was the last day it worked since then we can't publish a thing, the problem of that particularly site is that it was growing a hype and one day off we loose public opinions and one week off we loose fans, so is not really cool of mac to keep us off like this

  • Content managing iWeb sites... a simple solution i have found!

    Hi guys,
if this has already been posted here then throw me to the lions but i have recently been getting increasingly frustrated by not ebing able to adjust my iweb site online - i know there has been a lot of talk on here about this scenario so i have been doing some digging!
I can now content manage my iWeb sites! - i can only manage what content is already there and add to it within the framework that i have created - as in it wont create new pages for example, but i can even change the images.
A little internet site called CushyCMS helped me do this!
    www.cushycms.com
Basically its free for use! but you have to go in and edit the html of the published to a folder site - it is a little triky but once the tags are in there and its uploaded its really simple and Cushy works out from the tags wherether it is text or images, it even can do the java script.
Sometimes the formatting doesnt work quite as planned so i tend to only use it for minor text and image changes.
I fully content manage my iweb sites now like this one: www.see-nc.co.uk
i just thought i would pass this on!

    Hi jenster 81,
Thank you for posting, it might help some people. But I want to point out that what you have (nice looking site by the way) is not what most people want to edit from other locations. Most people want to be able to edit or add to their blog. And that cannot be done with cushy if comments from iweb are on. It could possibly be done if using icomment. I have not tried it so I don't know, but I thought I would post the warning in case someone tries it and looses all their comments.

  • Am I really using an obsolete DOCTYPE?

I trade emails with a very good Web designer. He's way ahead of me on CSS, etc. Several times when I've had problems making a page design behave, he has taken the time to create a completely revised style sheet that solves my problems. The only glitch is that his explanations of some of the code he uses are often cryptic or even absent. The site I'm working on now responds well to different browsers and media types, in large part because of these chunks of CSS he created. However, I'm using this DOCTYPE:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
His comment? "If nothing else, ditch the 90s DOCTYPE."
    His suggested version:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"
Trying to understand the jargon used to explain DOCTYPEs at w3c.org is no help. Can someone tell me in simple
English what the difference is between these two, wnd why the second is supposedly better? Thanks.

I don't think that a lot of web designers would be offended if I revealed that most of us could not write a doctype from scratch even with a knife to our throat. When a web designer creates a web page, he or she either copies and pastes the doctype at the top of the document or allows a web development application (like Dreamweaver) to automatically generate a syntactically correct doctype according to the settings. Sitepoint has a good brief explanation of doctypes.
The doctype declaration declares the version of the markup language you will use and the rules and grammar you will follow. I always use XHTML 1.0 Strict. This doctype sometimes causes me some extra work, but it forces me to write the most up-to-date markup.
Don't worry if you think you don't know the rules and grammar. All you need to do is get a good reference and write good markup (or do the best you can do) and when you validate your web pages, the W3C validation page will help you correct your errors. It's a great learning device.
HTML 4 Loose is a old doctype that is not in use anymore. You want to use the current markup, which is XHTML. HTML5 is the newest markup language but it's not compatible with many browsers. Don't use HTML 4.
It helps to understand that a few years ago web standards were pretty much ignored. Browsers allowed all kinds of errors and were "loose" with standards. Consequently, web browser technology lagged way behind markup and CSS technology. CSS has been implemented only a few years ago. But CSS is not a new technology. The W3C release the CSS 1 recommendation  December 17, 1996. The CSS 2 recommendation was formalized on May 12,  1998. CSS 3 is still in development. The last version of HTML, HTML  4.01, was officially released in December 1999. Shortly afterward, W3C  released XHTML in January 2000.
Leaders in the web development community began encouraging browser companies to take standards seriously. Web standards are taken seriously by web developers today and the result is much better technology and easy-to-maintain sites. So, use a current doctype and write good code that will validate.

  • How can I move my iPhoto Library from one Mac to another without losing the comments on the individual photos in the process?

How can I move my iPhoto Library from one Mac to another without losing the comments on the individual photos in the process? The source Macbook (OS 10.4.11 and iPhoto 6.0.6 (3.2.2.)) is with my husband in Germany, the target MacBook Pro (OS 10.8.5, iPhoto 11) is with me in Japan. Thanks for your help.

I copied the iPhoto Library to a CD and from there to the new MacBook
If you copied the library to the CD via the Finder it would be no different than the methods Terence suggested.  If you used the Share ➙ Burn menu option from inside iDVD you'll get a mini library that has to be accessed from the open library and the events/alubums copied into the destination library.  Not the same as the other methods.
The Share ➙ Burn method is no longer supported with iPhoto 9 and later.

You can make the collages easily if you have iWork.  Just open a letter sized page in landscape mode and drag the photos onto the page, rotate and postiion as necessary.  Then do a Print ➙ PDF ➙ Save PDF to iPhoto to get a 200 dpi jpeg version of the Pages page into iPhoto.  From there you can add it to your book and use a blank page with the option to have an image as the backbround.
If you have a 3rd party image editor that supports layers you can create the collage with it.

  • I used Duplicate Annihilator to isolate dups in iPhoto on my iMac. At the end it told me it had marked the word duplicate in the comments / description field. How do I find and delete the marked photos?

I used Duplicate Annihilator to isolate dups in iPhoto on my iMac. At the end of its search, it told me it had marked the word duplicate in the comments / description field. How do I find and delete the marked photos?

    File -> New Smart Album
    Description -> contains -> Duplicate
    will find them.
Then the keystroke to delete depends on which version of iPhoto you have. All the keyboard shortcuts are under the Help menu.

Against TOU which you "agreed" to in order to post in these user to user forums.  If you want to "suggest" something to Apple, do so in the Product Feedback area.

  • How do I re-download my iphoto library if I can no longer find iphoto on my desktop or in my finder without loosing all of my photos?

How do I re-download my iphoto library if I can no longer find iphoto on my desktop or in my finder without loosing all of my photos?

How did you install it in the first place? If it came with your Mac, and the Mac didn't come with Lion installed, then reinstall iLife from the Applications disc that was in the box. If you no longer have that disc, you'll have to order a replacement from Apple customer service. Either that, or restore the iPhoto application from your backups.
If you got iPhoto from the App Store, you can download it again by launching the App Store application.

How can I transfer my photobooks from iphoto 08 on osx 10.5.8 to iphoto 11 on macbook osx 10.8.1 without loosing layout? I prepared 3 books in iphoto 08  and wanted to order them yesterday. I got the message, that this version is not supported anymore. I also have a macbook osx 10.8.1. However I did not manage to transfer the books to it. What can I do? I really would not like to recreate the books from scratch in th new version.

You will have to convert your 08 library to iPhoto 11 by copying the library to your Macbook and opening it with iPhoto 11.
However, check to see if the theme you're using in 08 is available in 11.  If it isn't you'll probably lose the book or be assigned to some other theme.
If the theme you've chosen isn't available in 11 find one that is available in both versions and convert to it in the 08 library before you move it to 11.

  • Need advice on comments in iPhoto and sending photos to other people

    Two related questions.
    1) I'm on a study abroad and I want to send photos home to my family. My parents use computers and my grandparents don't, so I want to email photos to my parents so that they can print them and show them to my grandparents. I want to include captions with these photos. iPhoto has a description box for each photo, so that seems like a natural place to type captions. But then, I can't figure out how to email the photos with the descriptions, or how to print them with the descriptions. Preferably I'd like to send an entire album as an iPhoto backup or something like that and then my parents could open it in iPhoto and print the photos on photo paper with captions underneath them. This seems like a fairly obvious feature for a program like iPhoto so I'm feeling stupid that I can't figure it out.
    2) I also want to post photos online to send to people. I've been using Kodak albums but they don't let you post photos at high resolution or full screen. They also don't do video. Any advice for other sites that are better? I really am only interested in free sites, unless the fee for a pay site is very very low. Bonus points if you know how to use iPhoto comments on kodak or other galleries so I don't have to type them twice.
Edit: I do have the ophoto program which makes uploading to kodak easier, but I haven't been able to get it to browse my iphoto library directly, I have to export the files to finder first and get them from there. So I can't tell if it would use the comments if it worked properly.
    Thanks!

When you select the photos to email and click on the eMall button at the bottom you'll get a window which the option to include the Titles and/or Comments. The resulting email will have the title and/or comment below each photo as seen in this screenshot . If the recipient does not have a Mac they may not get the picture above the title and comment as we see in the email that we compose but they can match the title (which is the file name unless changed) to the file name and get the comments pertinent to that photo.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
