Lose audio & external video

When playing a sequence, audio will suddenly disappear and pix in external monitor will freeze, although pix in canvas continues to play. Have checked ext video, refresh AV, audio playback in View menu and have run FCP Rescue. Seq & Capture presets are DV NTSC 48khz.
Any other suggestions?
This happened with my main project after having trouble capturing material for a new project (which I abandoned)

You need to plug the headphones into the camera or deck you are outputting to.

  • Lose audio - not video - during FaceTime

My i7 MBP loses all audio after several minutes of a FT conversation.  I still get distant end audio and video but distant end gets video only - the mute button has NOT been activated.  Any clues to help me????

  • Loses audio then video freezes.

Well when I am streaming content I will consistently lose audio and a few seconds later the video freezes. I can then skip ahead or skip behind where the audio stopped and resume until this process happens again. There are times where this is happening every 30 seconds and other times where I can wait up to 5 minutes before I have to do this. This is happening on google chrome and firefox browsers.

I suspect you might be running into this bug:

  • QuickTime Editing Basic - Loses Audio when Video is Edited

I only have the basic quicktime version and I only want to do basic editing.  When I trim  or  split a clip, the audio input from the computer mic gets lost.  Thoughts?  Help?

I only have the basic quicktime version
the basic version ( QT player ) does not edit, you need to buy QuickTime Pro from here:

If you mean QT X read the help files on trimming clips it explains it well

  • Does the mini displayport able to transfer audio and video to an external monitor (example: a tv) using a 2011 13" MacBook Pro with an hdmi cable?

I was wondering this, because I want to hook up my 2011 MacBook Pro to a external monitor (TV) using an hdmi cable.  This would be heplful before I buy a mini displayport to hdmi adapter, and then maybe find out that the mini displayport might not transfer audio, only video.

Yes, min Displayport supports audio and video for the 2011 MBP 13" via HDMI.

The problem with iMovie, FCP and FCE is that they don't actually edit any files.
When you send a video to any of them it receives them and then what? As they are all non-destructive they simply record your edits in the xml file and go actually see the fruits of your labour you have to export from them. Rather like trying to use Aperture for editing an original file - it's just not designed that way.
QuickTime is a 'destructive' editor in that it actually works on the File itself, and that's why it can be used as an external editor.
    thanks for your comment, tc
if what you're saying is true then using quicktime 10 in it's current version is pointless because it offers nothing that Aperture can't do already & renders that "external video editor" feature in Aperture 3 useless.
those of us that use apple pro apps to make a living are accustom to round-tripping non-destructively into other pro apps (been doing this for over 10 years) which was expected when apple announced that "...Aperture lets you designate separate external editing applications for audio and video clips..."
aperture has never been treated as a pro app the way the other apple pro apps work. i'm still hoping aperture 3 will be.

  • Syncing External Audio with Video on iMovie

If syncing external audio with video on imovie, once successfully syncing the 2 is it possible to permanantly merge them so that I can continue trimming and rearranging clips without having to continue to re-sync the audio and video after every change I make?

In Final Cut Pro X, yes. In iMovie...no.
The workaround in iMovie is to sync your external audio to the video clip. Mute the audio on the video clip so all that is left is the good audio. Then use SHARE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. Choose Movie to QuickTime Movie and under Options choose Apple Intermediate Codec as the Video Codec.
Then save this clip in a place you can find it. Finally, import this new clip back into your event.

  • When sending sequence to DVD or Print To Tape, resulting video is terrible.  Audio OK.  Canvas playback is fine, but external video bad.  First time this has happened.

I've tried making a DVD via DVD SP, also Print To Tape and the results are inferior video.  Audio is OK.  Everything plays back fine in canvas. But external video results very low quality.  First time I've had this happen and I've looked through all the settings I can find -- no clue as to what may be happening here. Any help greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

I'm working with FCP 7.  The resulting video, exported either to DVD SP or via Print To Tape, is poor.  This is an HD sequence, converted to DV.  I've done this many times before with fine results.  What I'm currently seeing is not from the conversion.  Are there are any settings/prefs that might be at fault?

  • External Video Audio Sync

    Hi All,
I use an external monitor running though a Canopus analog video -> DV breakout box. When I have external video turned off, everything is perfectly in sync on the canvas. When I turn external video to 'all frames,' the canvas is off by a few frames.
I understand that there will be a slight delay when I'm looking at the external monitor since the audio is coming from the computers speakers. However, why does the canvas become slightly out of sync? What does one have to do with the other?
I found this line in another post:
"check the frame offset in the system settings, F/W is usually a 4 frame offset."
I'm not in front of my FCP system right now, but is this something I should look into? What is frame offset?
    Thanks,
    ~ Jim

When you get to your system...go to Final Cut Pro / System Settings / Playback Controls tab.
Play around with the frame offset (FCP default is 4), until your computer monitor and external monitor are in sync.
    ...from FCS1 manual 1, p220...
"Note: Depending on your external monitor configuration, you may need to experiment with frame offset values to synchronize the external monitor and the computer display"
Running through the Canopus may introduce a different latency than the default.

  • Lock external audio to video

I am editing a project in iMovie that is using audio recorded on a separate device than the video was shot on.  I have successfully synced the audio and video together with the use of hand claps at the beginning of the video.  My problem is now editing the project and removing the hand claps from the video.  How can I lock the video and external audio clip together so that I can trim the front and back of the project?  Right now, the video and audio are 2 separate pieces and trimming one does not trim the other.  Basically a reverse of the "detach audio" function that makes the camera audio a separate entity from the video clip.
I am not doing this as background audio as all videos that I saw on how to perform the sync did not do this as background audio.  Unfortunately, none of the videos show the step of trimming out the claps.
    Thanks,
    Roger

The real answer is to use Final Cut Pro. It has a feature that will automatically sync audio clips with video clips from multiple cameras. You could use this feature to automatically line up the external audio with your video clips. Once you do, you can edit your movie easily.
You can do this in iMovie, but it is a lot more of a manual effort.
    1. When you add the audio, do not drop it in the background. Drop it on one of the first video clips. The sound file will appear as a ribbon beneath the video clips. You can easily drag it left or right, or trim it.
    2. If you need to edit out stuff like hand claps, I suggest you first get the audio and the video lined up. Set the volume of the video clips to zero. Then Share the project. Use SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME. Choose Movie to QuickTime Movie. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec as the Video codec in the Options. Leave the audio codec as uncompressed.  This will create an .mov file in the Apple Intermediate Codec. You can use FILE/IMPORT MOVIE to import this file into an Event. Now the good audio is joined with the good video, and you can edit it like you are used to.
    3. There is another way.  For simplicity, let's say you have an audio clip with song A, then applause and a pause, and then Song B. You can drag in your audio file twice, again - dropping it on a video clip rather than on the background. Then use the clip trimmer to trim away the back half of the audio clip (Leaving only Song A). Use the clip trimmer to trim away the front half of the other clip (Leaving Song B). Now you have two separate audio clips that you can move around
    4. You can also accomplish the steps in #3 above by dragging in the audio clips twice, and then dragging the handles on the edges of the audio clips. Drag the front handle left to right to delete song A and leave Song B. Drag the right handle of the other clip to the left to delete song B and leave Song A.
Bottom line: it is easy in Final Cut Pro X. It is a kluge in iMovie.

  • Syncing externally recorded audio and video workflow

I'm looking for advice to sync externally recorded dialogue to video, exporting them, and importing them back into fcp7.
I've done this before, but not on this large scale.  I have many clips and I did record audio with the camera as well.
I know how to sync everything up, I'm mostly looking for the best way to combine the footage and export it without loss of quality.  Also wondering if I can keep the in camera audio AND the externally recorded audio.  So, if at the end of the day, I absolutely need to use one or the other, I can choose which one and hide or delete the other.
    My questions are...
    1. What's the best way for lossless quality re-exporting and importing for this (some fomat that is still editable)?
    2. Is there a way to keep multiple channels of audio (from the camera and the h4n) or do I have to choose before exporting?
    3. Is there a "batch" way to do this?  Does it consist of making multiple sequences?
    Thanks for your help!!!
    J
I shot it on a PMW  EX3 and the audio was recorded on an H4N, if that helps.

    1. Why are you re-exporting? No, that's not what you do. You use the MERGE CLIPS command. This will make a NEW clip with the audio and video files merged. Typically you have a slate to sync to, or timecode is jam sync'd so the camera and audio recorder have the same timecode.
    2. When you merge the clip, all the audio channels will be present.
    3. Sorta. If you get PluralEyes that will automatically sync everything...but will do so by making a sequence with the video and audio.  So a sequence of sync'd audio...not a clip. And if you use the sequence as a source, you need to make sure to use the OVERWRITE WITH SEQUENCE CONTENT mapped to the F keys, otherwise FCP will make those nested clips, and nested clips are not a good thing in this case.

  • I'm trying to record audio and video simultaneously using iMovie and an external mic and the computer is picking up the audio but when I replay the video there is no sound. Any ideas?

Can't get iMovie to record audio and video at the same time using the built in cam and an external mic.

iMovie works best with uncompressed audio. If your track is MP3 or AAC, you may get better results by converting your track to the AIFF format and then using that in iMovie.
You can do this in iTunes. Go to iTunes/Preferences and click the General button. On the General page, click the Import Settings button. Choose IMPORT USING: AIFF ENCODER.
(note: remember what you changed it from so you can change it back later, before you import another CD)
Now, in iTunes, select your track. Then click FILE/CREATE NEW VERSION/AIFF VERSION.

  • Video playback pauses/loses audio

I bought a 60GB 5G iPod in December. Used it without issue for a month. Then it completely died (blank screen - nothing). I sent it back and got a refurb replacement. I copied over all my audio/video to the new one and now have an issue playing back video.
I'm using MPEG4/XVID, 320k, AAC audio, 320x240 videos I encoded with ffmpeg. Note that these files worked flawlessly with the first iPod I bought (before it died).
The same files copied to the replacement iPod play for about 15 seconds, then pause for about 5 seconds, then resume playing without audio. The only way to get the audio back is to scan in either direction then resume playing.
I called for repair. I sent in my iPod. I got it back several days later with it reformatted and a note saying they didn't find anything wrong so they just sent it back. I thought maybe the reformat fixed something but it's acting exactly the same way.
Has anyone else seen this? Is there anything I can do? Am I doomed to never play video with my video-enabled iPod?

Brad..mine did the same thing and I received help here with the following message from Dre...
This problem has been occuring especially with the 60gb iPod's. The best solution to this problem is to downgrade back to version 1.0 considering that you recently purchased this product your iPod probably came with update version 1.1 I have instructions on how to downgrade back to version 1.0
Here are more detailed instructions on how to go back to 1.0, espescially if you bought your iPod in the last couple of months and it came with 1.1.
First, please download the older version of the iPod Updater here...
    http://appldnld.m7z.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/ww/win/061-2225.20051128.PDW nw/iPodSetup.exe
Now install that updater and restart your computer.
Now open the iPod updater (Start-->all programs-->iPod and find the iPod updater you just installed
Open the iPod Updater and connect your iPod. With that older version of the iPod updater you just installed, restore your iPod by clicking restore.
The iPod will restore and go back to software version 1.0. Now reload everything back into iTunes.
It does wipe everything off of your IPOD..but if you still have it in ITunes or on your harddrive...you're ok.
Also keep in mind that whenever you hook up your IPOD from now on, it will prompt you to update to 1.1 again...just click cancel to decline and keep on keeping on!!!
    Good luck!

  • Merge audio to video clips, end of clip loses audio

This is driving me nuts. After merging audio and video clips, sync to slate using the in points, everything is in sync.
The audio is longer than the video itself. But WAY before the scene ends, the audio mutes. The waveforms are visable but no audio plays. It drop out. It happens to every merged clip I create. I don't use the out points either.
    Anyone else have this issue??
If I take an alternate method to sync them in the timeline and create a clip from there, it makes a new sequence clip losing the scene and take metadata. That's not good. Is there a workaround?

It happens on every project and different formats. I do use FCP Rescue and that doesn't solve it. I did figure out a work around which involves a few more steps and is more time consuming. Maybe this can help find the problem. Here is the ridiculous workaround steps. We should send this to Apple.
The "--" are the extra steps.
To get a good merged subclip.
Open the audio file and add the 'in point' to the slate.
--Drag audio clip to the timeline.
--Drag the audio clip from the timeline to the browser window.
    Merge with video.
Viola. Audio won't drop out. But the waveforms are completely off with the sound.
Next step is to open the merged clips and Make Subclip so you don't have that extra media in the beginning and end. And the waveform seem normal.

using the add-on downloadhelper, I lose audio in vids when I replay in VLC flash player

I have the exact same issue... I've been using a Jabra Extreme2 and just this weekend, bought a Plantronics Marque2 and today had the same issue, so it's clearly not the headset but the phone or OS.
