Losing 1:1 previews in LR 5

When using photoshop lightroom 5 CC on Mac OS X 10.9.5, I keep losing my 1:1 previews for NO reason (happens about once/month)... I'd like to save my previews... Help?

JimHess - thanks... I see this was set to 30 day discard & now changed to Never... Thank you - so obvious once I looked at that setting... Peter

  • Premiere CC 2014 losing link to Preview files - what I've found

Upgraded to Premiere CC 2014 in an effort to resolve the dreaded "losing link to Preview files" problem.
After some testing, I've discovered that I need to actually close any and all timelines before saving/quitting in order to keep the link intact.
This workaround works for a variety of timeline types (ProRes and Avid 220), and irregardless of what type of external drive I am rendering to.
Has anyone else had this type of "losing links to Preview files" behavior?
FYI, I am on OSX 10.8.5...

The issue could just be this...

  • Trouble with my Thumbnails since 2.1.4 update

My Thumbnails have been acting crazy lately...it will show the wrong picture for the thumbnail, I have to go up to the toolbar and generate thumbnail, then it is fixed, until I come across the next one, which seems to be happening all the time now.
    Anyone else experiencing this?
I have not bought Snow Leopard yet, but I did update Aperture.

    Aperture 2.1.4
Professional wedding shoot. 1,500 photos. 8 CFs. Imported each into separate projects to easily vfy card and project counts matched. Edited 90%. Everything seemed to work fine including thumbnails/previews. While editing last 10%, decided to move all 8 projects into 1. Went to each project, Select All, drag, repeat. When images were all filed under one project, suddenly half the images have a blank thumbnail/preview in the browser pane. Each missing preview is bordered by a roundtangle with a dashed white stroke.
Tried the following with no luck:
    Quit/Restart Aperture
    Restart Mac
Create new project, drag photos to it (same thumbs are missing)
    Drag back
Create new project, drag 10 photos to it (same thumbs missing)
    Ctrl-option > Generate previews
    Ctrl-option > Delete previews
    Ctrl-option > Update previews
    Same without option
Toggle in and out of Quick Preview mode
    Resize previews via slider
    Enter/Exit Full screen
    Zoom/Unzoom
Cycle thru all Viewer/Browser modes (V)
Quit Aperture, open Aperture Library package, drag thumbs file to desktop, Open Aperture
repeat with other 2 files that appear to hold previews (e.g., ...minis...)
Now attempting to export project with 1,500 photos, copy entire Aperture Library to 2 TB drive, open backup library there, rename project, re-import exported project.
There appears to be some reas
Hunch: when it asks something like "In the process of generating previews... Quit, Cancel?" it could be that selecting Quit leaves the database in an inconsistent state. Although I have clicked Quit once or twice (successfully) before and the wedding photos are from September and should have had valid thumbs generated in 2 months of daily use, somehow they still went missing. I don't quite see how this is possible since moving photos to a different project shouldn't require new thumb creation. Furthermore, it appears that Apple has seen this problem during development and took the time to add options to delete, update and regenerate and force the generation of previews so there appears to be several uncaught bugs here related potentially to Quitting while generating, losing track of previews during drags between projects, deleting and re-generating, and even moving the internal thumbs files can't trick Aperture into regenerating them from scratch. The Canon 5D MarkII could be an issue but thumbs get generated for half the RAWs fine so that doesn't seem to be the root cause. From the clues it seems like thumbs/previews and pointers to them from the full size images are getting corrupted. I assume it's recreatable and therefore fixable based on (others reporting these same problems/symptoms). To do so, create 8 projects with 200 photos and drag into one project. Quit Aperture during the process and select the Quit (while generating previews) option when offered that choice. When blank previews appear, try the delete, update and generate previews options and watch them fail. Clues suggest that the SQL lite database or some other mechanism is holding preview or preview pointer information and these are getting balled up by the above process due to multiple Aperture software defects and glaring omissions in the Aperture test plans (for a premium software package targeted at professional photographers with 100,000+ photos who can't spend days trying to regenerate blank photos).
A potentially related issue is the false "Unsupported image format" error message displayed on a maroon background where the photographer expects to see his image. I have tens of thousands of images from the same camera, of the same image format and images that display properly 10 times can suddenly flip into an unsupported format? This appears to be another example of poor programming, poor error handling, poor testing and taking shortcuts. For example, why doesn't the error give some actual actionable information such as the format encountered, the size (e.g., zero?), data that, if sent in a screen shot to Apple, could help solve a problem with reports online dating back almost 5 years or more (2005).
A temporary workaround is to click a blank preview and force it to regenerate a thumb for the now tilted image. There may be a way to CMD-click all the missing thumbs and stamp a slight straightening onto them and regenerate all your thumbs. Depending on how severe this corruption is, it's possible that the new previews and pointers have no choice but to be updated and stored in all the places that Aperture has to keep track of them. Take care not to obliterate and stamp over any prior straightening or enhancements with this workaround to regen your previews.
My fear is that this band-aid could mask a bigger corruption. If so, you could wind up with all your Vaults and Time Machine backups harboring the same corruptions and restores that take hours, days, weeks only to return you to a state with blank previews and potentially deeper corruptions. One post on the web documents the potential for previews to not only go blank but to also turn to squares and lose all knowledge of the master and, apparently because the size and aspect ratio get forgotten and revert to 0 KB and 0x0, the master, even if relocated, can never reconnect with the blank icon. Hunch: this may have something to do with poor programming and error handling in the area of referenced masters and reconnecting with offline projects, libraries or folders. I've used these but do not in any of the projects in the Aperture library suffering these problems reported here.
Hopefully these details help apple and others get to the root cause of this potentially severe problem.
Note that this is NOT a snow leopard problem as I chose not to risk installing that (given past upgrades in iPhoto and Aperture where photos were lost forever and upgrading previews/projects took my business offline for 1 to 2 days solid while Aperture churned on its database) until after completing this project.
I will post the results of the re-import once it completes...potentially another temporary workaround that may hopefully save others a day of lost work actually enhancing photos for customers instead of being wasted trying to see the photos in your library--the minimal feature of a premium photo library package! -Sam

  • Losing links of images on Preview and Publish.

Some images are not linking on Preview and Publish (Beta7). I have relinked (even going back to the original in Photoshop) and re-published again, those link up but then other images stop linking and do not load. Ones that were working fine just minutes ago.

    Hi COLBY,
Here is the link to a recently published site. On the Publish I did about 30 min. before all the images were loading. Now on this page two are not. When I wrote the question yesterday 6-7 images were missing, randomly. One than publish again three, than more. Since yesterday I went back to a earlier saved version and made some minor type changes and links, not involving any of these images. The first time I published today, all the images were linked. It seems the longer I work with the file the more images seem to disappear. I have only had this problem since I updated to the Beta 7, on Friday. http://amberart.businesscatalyst.com/cockroaches.html

  • Premiere Pro 2014 losing previews + crashing on warp stabilizer

I can't begin to tell you how annoying this is.  I'm working with aerial footage (so a lot of warp stabilizing).  I'm noticing 2 HUGE problems...
Once I add a transition (even a cross dissolve), If I must wait at least 30 seconds before adding a warp stabilizer to a clip.  If not... PP completely hangs.
If I save my project and exit PP, I come back, and all my previews are toast... This is costing me hours in re-rendering (not to mention I'm getting concerned about orphaned files cluttering my drive).
I just did a complete re-install of Win 7 64, and Adobe is the only thing there (and my hw drivers).  I am fully updated on windows.  Please help.

    Just crashed again.

  • Losing Previews

Lightroom 3.4 is not saving the preview images in the catalog.
My photo archives are stored on multiple external hard drives, each image thoroughly keyworded. When I need to search my archives for photos, say Egret, I choose that in the Keyword List and all the previews of my egrets come up.  I look through and choose the one I want.  Then I click Photo > Show in Explorer and Lightroom tells me which Hard Drive to plug-in to find the full size image.  This system has been working well for me for years, but recently I had to replace my motherboard and reinstall software.  Since then, Lightroom has not been saving the previews in the catalog (I assume) because, when I follow the steps above, all I see is blank gray images instead of preview images except when a given Hard Drive is already plugged in.  I need for the previews to be stored in the catalog.
How do I get Lightroom to save the previews so I can see them without necessarily having the fullsize images available?
Under Edit > Catalog Settings > File Handling, I have the Standard Preview Size set to 1024 px, the Preview Quality set to Low, and the Automatically Discard 1:1 Previews set to Never.  That is the only place I can find that may be responsible for keeping the previews.
This problem has become a huge wrench in my workflow.  Any help getting this fixed would be much appreciated.

I rebuilt all my 1:1 previews about 9 months ago, all 120,000 + of them which took a good 56 hours, then the 3.4.1 update started to mess them up which I started noticing today when LR started rebuilding thumbnails all of a sudden.
Does Adobe really think their paying users have this kind of time to rebuild thumbnails when THEIR update caused the problem in the first place?? There is no other explanation for my previews disappearing, I have no corruption in any of my drives, no bad memory, absolutely diddly squat wrong with my hardware and OS.
It seems the only solution to this problem on these forums is "rebuild your thumbnails" ..... with this product nearing its 4th release nonsense like this should be long since fixed. I don't have 50+ hours to have my machine re-rendering thumbnails but once again I am left with no other choice from Adobe. Really disappointing.

  • Losing Preview files when changing start point

The way I always like to work is to select raw clips from my footage, then applying all the effects I want to do on them, render and then fine tune the in and out points of the clips, to fit the music I set it to. In previous projects this worked and I could just slide the end and start points of the clips on my timeline without having to render again. But with my current project I can change the out point of my clip, but as soon as I slide the beginning of my clip I lose the preview file. This is a really ineffective way of working. I hope somebody knows a setting that will prevent this. My sequences are PAL 16:9 25 progressive and I use 50P (deinterlaced) PAL footage and some 25P After Effects compositions.
    Thanks for the help!

  • I am losing all my formatting when I preview or export to business catalyst.

Since today, text formatting in a text frame is lost when I use the Muse Preview or when I export the site, either to Business Catalyst or export as HTML.
This was not happening earlier today or yesterday
The Menus and graphics are fine

I believe the problems are being caused when I use the content function in Muse.
Business Catalyst test site that I have bad formatting is:
    phoebecookbook.businesscatalyst.com
I have redone the site with cut and paste instead of content and here is the new site url:
    phoebecookbook01.businesscatalyst.com
If we do find the code that causes the problem, can a web site be imported back into Muse? or should I be using Dreamweaver?
    Your help is much appreciated

  • Losing jpg preview image for icons on desktop and in folders

I have my View Options set to "Show Icon Preview", which normally works fine. Periodically the previews disappear, and show simply as a generic jpg icon. It is not consistent or across the board - some folders are fine, some are not, and the desktop itself has some of each!
I've jumped through every hoop I know.... PRAM, Prefs, etc, but nothing has worked. It's spontaneously corrected itself twice, but this is getting to be a problem. Does anyone know anything... I hope.....?
    Thank you!!!

I had a client who had this problem at the beginning of the year and he invested in SneakPeek Pro from here http://www.code-line.com/software/sneakpeekpro/ which cured the issue

  • Losing clip preview in Viewer after paste

Running FCPX 10.1.1. I think this started to happen after the 10.1 upgrade.
In the Timeline, I scrub to a clip, and  what's under the playhead displays in the Viewer. So far so good. Now, I select and copy a clip in the Timeline, and then move the playhead where I want to paste the clip, the Viewer now showing where I've repositioned the playhead for an edit.
BUT when I paste, the Viewer goes black except for a generic icon indicating the name of the Project:
At this point, moving the playhead around the Timeline has fo affect on the Viewer: still just the generic icon. I can hit play, and the playhead doesn't move (nor does the Viewer show anything beside the icon).
It's only when I refocus on the Viewer specifically and back again to the Timeline (either by clicking on it, or via key command) that the Viewer shows what's under the playhead. All of this doesn't happen when I simply drag clips around.
Dang annoying. Something I'm doing wrong, or a bug?

I copied quiet a few compund clips that are made up of edited MultiCam Clips from different projects to a new project just yesterday. It grew to be 50 mins. On a couple - toward the end - I did experience something similar as you describe. I "fixed" it by double clicking on the "pasted to" "new" Project in the browser and its timeline a couple of times, then scrubbing. It may have worked itself out had I just waited tho.
    Good luck

  • TM2 unable to restore Windows 7 after Windows 8 Release Preview - have restore DVDs, still fails.

Hello!  I've pretty much run out of idea's on how to troubleshoot this so I'll do a summary of what I changed with the machine and then troubleshooting details further on.  The particular hp touchsmart notebook I have is a TM2 1079cl,  Product Number: WA812UA#ABA.  I've only had it for the length of 2012, I purchased it used from another person about 1 year ago now specifically to toy with Windows 8 before it's release.  As far as the hardwares actual age I can tell from the warrenty information that it was manufactured in late 2009, it states the warranty period was from January 2010 to Jan 2011.
Alright, so my history with the OS changes goes:
-> Purchased this TM2 in early 2012, ran the recovery partition to wipe it clean of the previous owners use and it ran through installation perfectly fine, then on a clean Windows 7 as if it were new.  I'd also made use of a bootable Acronis True Image 2010 disk to make a hard disk image of the three other partitions for recovery (though I did not include the freshly installed windows 7 partition, figured it wouldn't matter if recovery could do it's thing right?)
-> Some days later I loaded the second of the three preview releases for Windows 8 onto it (Customer Preview build I believe).   All worked fine and it dual booted between the two without issue, afaik the only real changes it made amounted to converting the primary partition Windows 7 was installed on to an extended partition and splitting the existing Windows 7 partition equally 50/50 inside that extended partition.  It had also overriden the boot manager / bootloader that was there before but again not surprised.
-> When Release Preview build came out over summer I did an update from inside windows 8 and all seemed fine still.  The change between the two preview builds did develop an issue where I couldn't shut windows 8 down without a handful of error boxes poping up but I'm pretty sure that was unrelated.
-> More recently about thanksgiving time I decided to give the laptop to a family member with a archiac desktop that's got issues and general old factor that makes it not worth updating.   This person is pretty adverse to change so that whole "Win8-vs-what people are used to" thing comes into play.   I decided to wipe the TM2 clean back to the OS it shipped with.    Here's where I'm now stuck:
=> Before doing anything I made another True Image of the HDD as a just incase, glad I did.
=> Tried F11 to load the recovery partition only to find that because of the bootloader being tampered with by Windows 8 it doesn't actually go to the HP recovery partition anymore despite still being on the hard drive.
=> Grabbed the hard disk image from the beginning of the year with the recovery partition on it before windows 8 touched the machine, wiped the hdd completely clean, restored the disk image.   I could now get into HP recovery fine but....
=> I got a dialog error right off the bat saying that the recovery partition could not install and instructing me to insert disc 1 of the recovery software.  Well I never made the dvd's myself with the one-time use burning feature when it worked so that's out and I had not bought the discs from HP's support site.   At this point I'm puzzled though why the recovery partition can't install despite the computer loading up into recovery just fine.  For example command prompt in the Windows PE environment is functional and all files seem to be present.   Maybe some verification that the recovery partition isn't pirated might have been triggered by hard disk imaging, i'm really not sure?
=> I then made used of the HDD image I'd just created before trying this and restored the other copy of the drive (Win8 tampered bootloader, Win8 release preview, win7, the inaccessible recovery partition and all).   Windows 7 and 8-RP could still boot.   Googled around a bit about the recovery partition key (F11) getting messed up by Windows 8 and came to find I only needed to set recovery as the "Active" partition to get it to start.  Sure enough that got it to start but I'm running into the same issue where the actual recovery partition loads up but now refuses to begin the restore process without HP dvd's.  Since I know for certain this worked months ago I guess once again since I ended up restoring that version of the recovery partition it may have also declared itself tampered with... great.
=> Contemplated what to do for a bit and then finally just ordered the DVD's from HP in December, I specifically got the recovery DVD's for my model and they did come from HP directly, not second hand from ebay or another person.  Wasn't really that bad, $16, very reasonable price.  Should be set right, legit OEM DVD's to use?  Nope....
=> The DVD's came.  Two discs for main recovery and a third for applications and drivers.   Boot off disc one and it states it's formatting the drive how it wants (good, i'm liking this so far), copies all of the contents of the three discs to the hdd and begins it's reboot and install cycle.    Reboots a handful of times, you can tell it gets well past copying the contents of any of the discs and into installing windows.  You see the Windows 7 boot logo a few times and even the standard "preparing your things" background that's similar to the Windows 7 login screen.  The screen definitely gets as far as installing the proper graphics driver (and others I assume at that time) as the resolution changes to native for the TM2's LCD near the end.
=>  Suddenly on the 3rd or 4th (I think) reboot of installing windows it starts for a moment then says shutting down, it reboots and it's back in the windows PE environment of recovery setup again (this time coming from the hard drive, not the DVDs) and says it's failed to restore and offers to start everything over from the very beginning.
That's where I'm stuck.  The Recovery Partition died on me post-Windows 8 and the offical HP recovery DVD's are failing me (and oddly they're failing me seemingly in the very last steps of windows 7 restore, well after the DVD's themselves are no longer being read from).
    >> Question 1:  Does the HP recovery partition "self destruct" if it gets imaged by hard drive imaging software and restored?  I can confirm mine worked fine once and then dead after going through Acronis True Image.  Another possibility is maybe there's some ID's or tattooing of the hard drive or specific partitions that was lost when Windows 8 put it's newer bootloader into the machine or lost from Acronis?  This is still the oem hdd that came with the computer, it has not been switched out.
    >> Question 2:  Are there any known problems with the official Windows 7 recovery DVD's for a late 2009 TM2 1079cl?  I'm also aware of the Cyberlink recovery software patch / pre-install disc and tried this with results that were no different to without it.  That said my machine does have the Cyberlink version of the recovery software, I read there's something like 3 different companies software for recovery depending on time period the laptop was made and sold.
    Reference: [ http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&lc=en&softwareitem=pv-80183-1 ]
    >> Question 3:  Plainly put, what now?  Anything else to try or do I need to go find an RTM windows 7 disc and scrounge all the driver zips together?  (Very much hoping to avoid that, I'm actually pretty curious to really understand what happened here and while that'll work it would answer nothing.  hehe).
Maybe related things as well:  Some searches led me to believe having the WLAN switch off at the start of recovery causes driver installation to flip out (and indeed win7 seems to drop dead during the last steps of driver install) however it's not possible it would seem to turn the WLAN card "on" before this point.  Switch won't bring it to enabled state anyways.   As I mentioned above the Cyberlink recovery software patch has no effect on things.   No parts have ever been changed in this machine, original hdd, wlan card, ram modules, ect.   I doubt the motherboard bios / firmware has ever been updated, machine states it's revision F.02.
    I have at my disposal:
    * A lot of time, actually, hense why I really want to know what happened and not use the Win7 RTM disc.
    * hdd image of HP recovery before Win8 touched the machine.
    * hdd image of recovery after Win8 and a kinda buggy but still bootable Win8-RP.
    * The correct HP-made recovery DVD's for my laptop, ordered recently (December 2012).
    * Confident enough to toy with partition editing tools should it be a suggestion, never really used much outside of gparted on linux live discs however.  Considering the current state of the machine there's nothing to risk losing anymore though.
Sorry for the text wall!  I like being very detailed!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I have the tm2 and have not experience an issue with the recovery and wifi being off, but it certainly is in the realm of possibility.  I just had not encountered it on my own tm2, so I subconsciously dismissed it or just didn't think of it as a result.
Thank you for sharing your solution with the community.

  • Preview very sluggish on MacBook Pro. Move a bar and the umbrella turns a few seconds. Any ideas? I don't want to update my iMac until this one is solved.

MacBook Pro with 4GB of memory and a 2.3 GHz Intel.   No other program running other than Preview.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • LR 5.3 err on startup: LR encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit

I just got this message today while i was trying to move some files via LR.
I've researched and found that everyone else was able to fix their issue by moving the preview database out of LR, tried that but it doesn't fix the problem.
I've moved all files except the new preview and catalog (only a single catalog)  database from the Picture/Lightroom folder
I've rebooted the computer several times and tried opening LR, still no joy.
The size of my catalog is 3.8GB
The size of the preview is 6.5GB (77,186 files in 45,745 folders).
This is a new install from scratch on a new PC,
    Specs are:
    Intel i7 4770
    32GB memory
2 x 250GB SSD drive in RAID 1 for OS and apps
    1 x 6TB SATA HDD for images in a RAID 5
    1 x 5.3TB SATA HDD for final images in a RAID 5
I've had nothing but issues with this system since day 1, images transferred and they do not show up correcting inthe individual folders (especially 2012).  Total image count is about 320,000
Seems to me that LR cannot handle the numbers although LR3.6 was a lot stable this version is shakey all over the place.  Have not had a decent day of work since some 6 weeks ago when i made the change.  Victoria has been helping me a lot with working out the images issues and I think we ran into a corruption the other day.. after a few runs of the optimise feature in which case it crashed on the first 2 attempts I thought we had gotten past this, but instead today it presented me with a new error.
So I do hope this can be resolved as I'm losing time in getting work out...
    Thanks...
    Jon

Well, well what do you know.. it just came up..
I moved all files from the LR folder except the catalog, rebooted and it came up...
I guess the next thing to do is to get the previews back.
Hope this is a good sign...

  • LR 5.7 "encountered an error when reading from its preview cache". Happened the other day, I went to a day old backup and continued working. But now it happened again. LR renamed the catalog "Lightroom 5_ANDERS-OFFICE8_Mar-15-230042-2015_Conflict".

I installed 5.7, ran ok for a while. Then it gave the error message that the preview cache was bad. A few times I have gotten this message and it restarts and repairs it. But now it couldn't. Renamed the Lightroom 5 catalog with the name "Lightroom 5_ANDERS-OFFICE8_Mar-15-230042-2015_Conflict". I got a backup and ran with that, and after a few days it happened again. It cannot repair and read the cache and shuts down.
What should I do? I can probably go to a backup again, but I keep losing work. I now backup every day.
But I need the system to be stable.
This is Windows 8.1. Lots of RAM and disk space.

The catalog isn't the problem, but rather that preview file. Use Windows Explorer or Finder (depending on your operating system) to browse to the folder that contains your catalog. Locate and delete the folder that has the extension .lrdata. Then you should be able to start Lightroom normally and it will begin generating a new cache file.
