Losing Audio While Importing DV - Missing Clips

I am new to imovie. I just bought a Sony HC-42 miniDV camera and am using it in "passthru" mode to import old 8mm tapes from my old camcorder.
I had no problems with my first tape, but now I keep having crashes. One interesting phenomena is that I keep losing the audio during playback of any imovie project. I can only rectify this by rebooting the computer. This keeps happening without a consistent trigger. HELP. Also, I noticed that I mysteriously lost the first clip in the project???
I am using imovie 3.0.3. I am importing to a new external HD using firewire 400.

Hi Mark
What's comes first to my mind is:
I don't daisychain Camera - ext hard disc - Mac.
I would try to import but with the external hard disc disconnected. If this
works OK then You know that Your Mac is on the boarder of what it can
handle.
I use QT 6.5.2 with Mac OS X.3.9. If You upgraded to QT 7 that can be
another source to problems.

  • How do I monitor audio while importing?

While importing from my cable TV, I Can see the incoming video but caan't hear the audio. I would be helpful if I could here the audio so I could go about my work and keep an ear on the feed. Then I would know when the feed is over without having to Constantly watch it. I suppose I could size the monitor windo real small and put it in the corner of my screen then rearrange all working windows arround it. But that's a pain...

How do I monitor audio while importing?
Use iMovie HD or Vidi to import files to your computer. Both allow audio monitoring. iMoveie '08 does not.

  • I keep losing audio while editing...any advice?

Keep losing audio while moving stuff around while editing... can't figure it out

Can you tell us what type of actions you are performing to evoke this behaviour?
Do you know the properties of audio file you are using?

  • Transitions do not render Audio / no audio while importing from cam / etc.

hi - i still have problems with the latest iMovie HD 6.0.2. (267) on my brandnew 17" iMac (Intel) 1-GB-RAM, (QT WITHOUT any 3rd-party-SW)
    1. the build-in transitions (soft/smooth, overlay) dont render the AUDIO-file.
it takes NO effect (only the images do)
    2. by importing clips from the camera i cannot hear AUDIO the same time
(by replaying the importet clip audio is available/imported)
    3. the sharpening filter can't show a preview - the effect/s will only appear AFTER rendering.
    any idea?
    Mike

As others have noted, the audiolevels are as they are when you record. If you need good audio on your video, you need to make sure the levels are ok while you record!
That is, not to low, and not clipping.
On most pro setups, the audio is controlled by a seperate person, or you have mics with microports on the speaking person(s) that are adjusted before the actual recording starts.
Too low audio tend to give a lot of noise, and to high audio make clippings when digitized, making distortions.

  • Error 109C ImportProcessServer.exe while importing a .mp4 clip in PPRO CS4 ver 4.2.1

I just purchase Adobe Premiere Pro a few days ago - and subsequently updated it to Ver 4.2.1.  A started a new project - I tried to import some video footage I just shot with a GOPro Hemet Cam while skiing at our local mountain.  I can easlily see the clip using Real Media Player - or the Quick Time player.  It is a 10.9 MB ... 7 second MPEG-4 movie clip.  File name is "gopro0030.mp4"
I created a "bin" called video .... then right clicked to import the file.  You can see the file name in the media browser.  But the file would not import.  I received this error message:  "109C ImporterProcessServer.exe  Application Error.  The instruction at "0x05efcac" referenced memory at "0x00000014".  The memory could not be read. CLick OK to terminate."
This is very frustrating - I just purchased the software - and it won't import a 7 second video clip!  It did import still fotos with no problem.  What can I do?
thank you for your attention to this.

I would just like to add that I have also tried to change to extension of the file from .mp4 to .mov
After doing that - I was able to import the file .... 1280x960 (1.0) Alpha 29.97 fps - thats what it says ..... but the file is just a black screen - even when I drag it into the timeline.
    thank you

  • "Importer reported a generic error" message while importing ProRes 422 clip

Hi all.  I am getting an "Importer reported a generic error" message when I try to import a ProRes 422, linear PCM clip into Premiere Pro CS6.  I have imported other ProRes 422 clips in previous projects without a problem, although those clips did not have the linear PCM codec included.  I have tried to solve the problem using advice on other forum threads.  Changing the file name did not work.  Removing underscores in the file name did not work either.  Copying the file and pasting to a different folder before re-importing did not work either.  The file DOES open in AE, but I am getting the error message without fail when I try to import into Premiere.  Any thoughts on how to remedy the situation?  FYI - I am still running version 6.0.0 of Premiere.  Thanks for your help!

Try going to Help | Deactivate in Pr.  Close Pr.  Reboot.  Launch Pr and activate if requested.  That procedure has helped some users restore missing codecs and presets, maybe it'll help your Dynamic Link.

  • I'm losing audio when I cut a clip.

Sometimes, after I cut a HD clip in PE7, the first piece of the clip loses a second or two of its audio right at its end, just before the cut. There is still a waveform visible, but for the final couple of seconds, it's dead flat.
    Wondering what causes that.

I have been thinking of this problem all night, and cannot come up with any reason for the Audio to be truncated either.
Back in the OP, you state that the Waveform is evident, but the signal disappears, right before the point that you Cut. Unless one has added a Transition to the Audio, I cannot see how this is happening.
For some background on what happens on the Timeline with a muxed (Audio & Video Clip):
1.) basically, what one gets, when they Import/Capture is a "proxy," a representation, of the AV Clip in the Project Panel. The physical file is not really in the Project, but instead, one has XML links to it. When the Clip is dragged to the Timeline, one has an "Instance" of that linked Clip reference. One could have that same Clip appear in any number of Instances.
2.) when one Razors/Cuts the Instance of that Clip, there are just instructions written, telling the program how much to extract from the physical AV file, when one Exports/Shares. Basically, you have created a "sub-Clip," but be careful as the term Sub-Clip has other meanings in other NLE programs, like PrPro. They are something a bit different. The physical AV file is never touched, just the reference to that Instance of it. It's all done with XML instructions.
As a test, once you have used the Razor/Scissors on the larger Clip, where you get the Audio dropout, Click-drag on that new Tail and extend the Duration of that "sub-Clip" a half-dozen, or so seconds. On the Timeline, this will push the rest to the Clips to the right. Now, test, and see if the Audio dropout stays where the original Cut was, or if it moves along with the Tail (now extended) of the sub-Clip. What happens?
Also, can you zoom the Timeline, but the vertical (the Audio and Video Track 1, assuming that is the location of this material) and also the horizontal, and then place the CTI (Current Time Indicator w/ the Edit Line) at the junction of the Clips, and do a screen-cap, so that we can see that spot, where the Audio drops out? There has got to be something happening there, like a default Audio Transition being added, or a Keyframe on Volume, etc. I can think of no other way for this Audio drop-out to occur - or a ghost in the machine????
Cutting the Audio should result in an abrupt stoppage in the Audio, just like the Video. That is why it's called a Butt Cut, and why we often add Transitions for both the Video and the Audio.
Good luck, and wish I had something besides a bit of basic background and some theory and tests for you.

  • Losing audio when importing from QT, help please

I have been unable to capture footage from a handycam to FCP HD, so I decided to capture in imove instead and then export the footage as QT files so I can import into FCP. Exporting is fine, and when I play the files in QT I get both audio and video, but when I import the same files into FCP I only get the video and the audio has disappeared.
When I try to import the imovie dv clips, they play for a second and then the video stops but the audio continues. That's why I decided to convert them to QT.
I have no idea how to fix this. I tried extracting the audio in imovie and exporting that way too, but same result.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!
(The whole reason for these problems is that I can't seem to capture in FCP. FCP recognizes the camera, but can't seem to control it. It is set on Firewire NTSC basic, and I've played around with different settings on that as well. The camera is set to VTR with AV/DV out on........can't figure out why it won't work.)
    Sorry for the long version.

Personally i'd try to iron out the wrinkles in your fcp capture process.
Is your camera on the approved devices list? If not, you might think about a new camera. if it's a sony, you ought to use firewire, not firewire basic as your device protocol.
Can you play out to the camera?
imovie captures a dv stream, not a mov and therein lies the problem with imovie files in fcp. but you ought to be getting unrendered audio (beeps until rendered) not no audio at all. Interesting.
    What exactly is the camera?

  • Audio Not Importing With Video Clip

My issue seems to be the same as another on this board, but it involves an MPEG file. In QuickTime Player the clip plays video and audio fine. But when I import the clip into iMovieHD 6.0.3, the audio doesn't play. Any suggestions?

iMovie is a video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV/D8 camcorders
you try to teach the old dog new tricks..
    Streamclip (free)
    converts mpeg1 into something editable..
if you're tying to edit mpeg2, you need addtional Apple mpeg2 plugin (20$)
choose in Streamclip dv/dv-stream as export option...
due to the nature of mpegs, you will realize a (dramatic) loss of pic quality...

  • No audio while importing?

I am attempting to digitize some old tapes from U-Matic, via ADS Pyro link - I want to see and hear what is being captured as it is happening, I can see but I cannot hear. When I "stop" and play - lo and behold there is audio!
Great but what if I just recorded/ingested an hours worth of material without audio?
+ it's a bit dull just watching lips move.
Please tell me there is an easy fix maybe a bit like a VCR or such, just a high tech digi version - called a computor!
I just bought iMovie (the latest) because about an hour ago I read that is what I needed to do, because the version I had couldn't.
It's now 3 hours since I tried to do something really simple - and I have given up.
On that note, and to Apple, I am spending many hours doing "PC" type things, like searching for solutions to "problems" like this, and recently searching for "drivers" that used to be a thing of ridicule hurled at win-tel users.
What happened to the easy human interface? where everything JUST WORKED! I am spending more and MORE time trying to figure out and remove all the "improvements" - WHAT happened?
    Thank You

Thanks for replying - thing is I used to have it, I am almost certain.
When googling I came across a thread saying it was switchable in iMovie 6, I had iMovie 7.
In the same thread it said that it was also switchable (well clickable)  in the latest v.
So I bought it, would seem I've wasted money.
I'm importing in real time from a U-Matic tape deck so no speaker!
Anways It seems I'm not the only one by a long way,
Apple are loosing me little by little,  I have been a "fanboy" since OS7.
I have spent many hours trying to undo all the "features" in Lion,  I only upgraded to keep functionality of my email accounts that I've had since the begining of mobile me. I never would have ever imagined Apple would end up like this. They are breaking everything.
I don't want an old fashioned looking iCal. "Natural" scrolling is un-natural. I don't like spending hours searching for "drivers" to make things work again. and on and on.
I used to make fun of win-tel users with my "tale of two computors" - Not any more.

  • Turning off audio while shuttling through clips using keyboard buttons

Is there a way to turn off the audio while shuttling through clips when using either the J, K, and L buttons or the left and right arrow keys?  I have audio skimming turned off but this only turns off the audio while skimming with the mouse, and not using the keyboard buttons above when you want to make a more precise edit.
    Many thanks for your help!!

    Hi Russ,
Thank you for replying.  You're correct that keyboard shorcut toggles the audio skimming on & off, but if it's off I'm still hearing audio while I shuttle through clips using the keyboard buttons J & L or using the Left & Right arrow keys.  I would think that would turn off the audio for those functions too and not just skimming with the mouse.
Do you know of a solution?
    Thanks,
    Reid

Did you discover the loss of audio for the video file after you had created a narration clip with the program's Narration Tool?

  • Help me!:audio keeps dropping out and coming back in while importing clips

While importing from my camera (brand new Canon Xl-2) to imovie, the audio from the tape keeps dropping out and coming back in for some reason. This happens with all my tapes. I've tried using a head cleaner and that didn't help. I'm using a Maxtor external hard drive to save the project on. The project itself is kind of big (about 80 GB) Can imovie support projects that large? Could this be a problem with my processor?
I'm just frustrated beyond belief right now. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
these our my specs: Processor: 800 mhz. Memory: 1GB SDRam. The disk space icon at the bottom of imovie says i have 151 GB of disk space left.

    Hi e
With a slow computer one has to minimize the hassle.
    I would
    - repair permissions
    - cheque that nothing else is taking resourses from the job (energy saver,
    screensaver, File Vault etc.)
    - I would move material to my ext hd so that I got > 80Gb free (for a 80Gb
    project)
    - nothing else connected than my Mac + Camera and import.

  • Idvd importing/missing clip

I have created 5 imovies and they run just fine on imovie. I have troubble importing one of the movies into iDVD because it says that I'm missing one clip. I checked the movie and I don't have the clip that iDVD is asking me for. Do you know what can I do, or how or where can I find that clip?

Hello, I am also having a similiar problem, I am trying to burn an imovie project in idvd, and while it begins encoding, it gives me a message that I am missing clips that a) are not in my project, or b) are in my project and are not missing.
Can you help me to solve this? My contract project is due tomorrow, and I can not get it to them....?????
