Losing bluetooth keyboard at startup / USB to blame - any fixes?

Hi. After 10 months of normal behavior my Apple bluetooth keyboard - but not apple bluetooth mouse, strangely - now always needs to be re-paired with my MacPro at startup. (Batteries all fine, and kept nice and close to the computer.) According to some old posts this seems to be a problem with a USB device (in my case a Wacom tablet) which is connected at startup. Indeed removing the device seems to solve the problem. But it doesn't solve mine, 'cause getting under the desk to unplug my tablet every time I shutdown and startup isn't ideal. Any ideas? Cheers.

Similar problem.
I lose Bluetooth Apple Keyboard and icon in the menubar after a COLD restart. This does not occur for warm restarts though or logout/login.
I have done all the usual 'fixes' (trashed Bluetooth preference files from both the Library > Preference folder and the ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost folder), ran Disk Utility, Repaired Permissions, etc., etc... but it still occurs.
What I have found that is at least a temporary 'fix' is to run Leopard Cache Cleaner in the 'medium' setting for deleting cache files with all of the boxes checked. I have just ran it on this last restart in the 'deep cleaning' setting with all boxes checked, and since it required me to re-discover my keyboard perhaps this time the setting will 'stick.'
It appears that this is a cache problem since Leopard Cache Cleaner has at least been able to temporarily fix the problem. And I am hoping that now after using the 'deep cleaning' it has resolved this problem once-and-for-all.
Apple... this really needs to get fixed.
You would think that when a person purchases the manufacturer's own Bluetooth keyboard that an update would not make it totally useless each time they restart.

  • Bluetooth Keyboard has a scratched trace - how to fix?

My bluetooth keyboard is the older model (white keys with a clear frame). For a while I have had a few keys that do not register on the computer, but the majority of the keys work fine. after taking my keyboard apart, I found that all of the keys that do not respond are along the same trace on one of the plastic sheets. I also noticed that the trace in question has a tiny section missing (it appears to have been scratched or scraped off).
Is there any way of fixing this? I have reasonable knowledge of how to fix a normal trace, but not when soldering a wire on would melt everything. Any help would be appreciated.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem. A suspect a hardware problem, likely a bad screen

  • Z68-GD65 Hangs on Starting Windows because of USB Controller. Any fixes?

Issue: During Windows 7 (32 bit & 64 bit) installation and startup, the computer hangs at "Starting Windows". It will display a pixel or two of the first red part of the logo animation and then stop.
    System Setup/Hardware:
    Mobo - Z68-GD65
    RAM - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB)
    HDD - Corsair Force 3 60GB SSD
    CPU - Intel i5-2400 (Sandybridge)
PSU - Antec Earth Watts 650W
GPU - Asus Geforce GTX 560 Ti
Cause: I found that when I disabled the USB Controller completely from the BIOS, everything worked smoothly (install & startup). If I left the USB Controller enabled and just disabled the Legacy Controller, I would be left with a blinking DOS cursor after POST.
This is an issue because both keyboard and mouse are USB. I had to borrow an old PS/2 mouse to even install windows.
    Troubleshooting tried:
    - Tried disabling EVERY (and yes, I mean every, I've rebooted this thing 50+ times [stopped keeping track]) setting that can possible be disabled individually
    - Tried unplugged every component except: board, hdd and dvdrom
    - Tried swapping RAM
    - Tried swapping HDDs (to Sata non SSD)
    - Tried swapping PSUs
    - Tried changing Windows 7 install discs (one 32 bit, one 64 bit)
    - Tried removing all motherboard connections (FP audio, FP usb, etc, everything but 24+8pin power)
    - Tried clearing CMOS and resetting BIOS
    - Tried enabling USB Controller via ClickOnce BIOS and restarting
    - Tried fully updating Windows 7 and all drivers (video, mobo, etc)
    - Tried updating BIOS with Live 5
    - Tried leaving only USB 3.0 Controller enabled and plugging mouse/keyboard into those ports (blue on back)
    - Tried Windows repair
    - Tried Windows boot logging (got to file CLASSPNP.sys)
    - Tried booting to Safe Mode
    - Tried banging head on wall  (this was successful in giving me a headache, but not booting the computer)
I mainly list the troubleshooting above to convey the amount of frustration I've had with this board.
The USB Controller simply seems bad or the driver (or the way the board interacts/loads the Windows driver) is bad. I must have USB on my computer.
If I need to RMA, please let me know, however, I would hope there is a solution out there to fix the USB Controller issue. The RMA deadline is the 20th, I hope I can get an answer one way or the other before this as if there is no answer, I will be forced to RMA and go with another product from a different manufacturer (I really wanted to get over my "Asus only" attitude and try you MSI! I've been impressed up until this point, please don't let me down).
    Please help?

    phasedone,
I was having the exact same issue with a new build (Mobo MSI Z68-GD65-G3).  I had been banging my head against the wall for a while and then I came across your post.  Subsequently, I disabled the USB controller in BIOS and my Win 7 install ran fine (minus the fact that I had no access to my USB keyboard and mouse).   I set the BIOS back to default settings which re-enabled the USB controller, and thus was able to re-plug the mouse and keyboard in after the windows loading screen, where the 4 colored orbs come together to make the Windows flag.  This seemed to do the trick.
Now the problem is, everytime the computer restarts (i.e. for any Windows updates), it freezes at the same point it would during the installation.  This is again assuming the mouse and keyboard are still plugged into the rear panel USB ports.  Which of course they're going to be!
Anyone with a recommendation as to how to fix this?  Is this a hardware defect or can it be solved with some sort of driver or firmware update?  I'm at a loss... but I certainly shouldn't have to unplug all USBs before starting the computer, that's just nuts.
I'm considering RMA as well, but would like to see if any MSI staff members or forum members might be able to share their insight.

  • Unable to pair bluetooth keyboard

I started up the imac and things went great. Paired the keyboard and the mouse. Then after two weeks, the link to the keyboard was gone but the mouse remained paired. I tried multiple times to pair the keyboard. Changed the batteries, am updated on all software, and re-booted several times. Mouse works, keyboard does not. Am now typing on Logitech S530 keyboard that uses USB connection. Any ideas?

    Hello Mitolo:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I think I would take the KB into an Apple store (I think there is one in Milwaukee) and see if it pairs on another system. If the KB is relatively new, I would call Applecare and suggest a warranty replacement.

  • Use USB keyboard instead of bluetooth keyboard

New iMac. OS X Lion. USB keyboard preferred. bluetooth keyboard absent. The computer searches forever for the missing keyboard.
If I unplug the USB keyboard and re-insert the plug, the computer recognizes the keyboard and everything is fine. It won't just recognize the USB keyboard without all this hassle. What solution might there be for this?
    Thanks

I started in the bluetooth preferences, clicked advanced and based on the presentation given there
I de-selected the checkbox that read "open bluetooth setup assistant at startup if no keyboard detected".
That "is" the solution. The warningt there was that one "should have an alternative keyboard attached".
    WOW

  • Can I use USB mouse with bluetooth keyboard?

I am in need of some help. I recently got my iMac about 3 months ago and absolutely hate the magic mouse and want to use my rocketfish usb mouse along with the bluetooth mac keyboard. Is this possible or just wishful thinking on my end? I have searched everywhere for drivers and answers with programs etcetera and have came out empty. Help?

I've done so (and even tested it on my Macbook and the USB mouse works fine) but for some reason it will not interface with my iMac - and I've tired multiple USB ports and still nothing, which is why I brought up the keyboard being bluetooth I didn't know if that somehow may interfer with the USB mouse when the bluetooth keyboard is turned on and paired. I am pretty good when it comes to computers so I know what to look for and what I am doing (for the most part) but this has me stumped.

  • Startup key combinations with bluetooth keyboard?

In Lion, accessing the recovery partition entails holding down the command-R key combination at startup. Selecting a startup disk and starting up in Safe Boot mode also require holding key combinations at startup.
But under Lion and a bluetooth keyboard, none of these key combinations work. A wired keyboard works fine, but I no longer have one.
A friend who downloaded and installed Lion today just called and asked how he can do this with HIS bluetooth keyboard, so this seems to be a general concern.
    Any tips? Thanks!

Some PC keyboards may map it to the Windows key, but on most it should be ALT.

  • How to get pictures from a usb via a bluetooth keyboard

I have a bluetooth keyboard that has a USB slot but when I plug a USB stick in I cant work out how to upload pictures. I have tried everything and Im thinking I need an app?

I sincerely doubt that'll work. TO make it work you'd need some sort of file manager on the iPad.
Now if you had the camera connection kit, and the USB was one of the ones that work - I've had about a 50/50 success rate getting USB's to work, and the USB was formatted correctly you might be able to pull a photo off the USB into your device. In theory it works, there's just a lot of 'ifs'

  • Brand New Bluetooth Keyboard doesn't pair at startup on MAC Lion Server

    Hi,
Just got a new Mac Lion Server Mac Mini and went to set up last night.
Apple logo and chime comes up.  Then the screen to turn on Bluetooth Keyboard and Magic Mouse comes up.  I turned on the power on the mouse and keyboard.  The keyboard doesn't pair and the mouse does.  As soon as the computer realizes the mouse is connected, it moves on to the setup screens (username, server setup etc.) and doesn't care that the keyboard is not set up yet.  Of course, since I cannot type usernames etc. for the server, I get stuck.
I rebooted (hard power shutdown) several times in the hope that one time (accidently) the keyboard would be picked up but no such luck.
My PS3 recognized the Apple Keyboard so it's not the keyboard.
I didn't have a USB keyboard around so I have to wait till tonight to try to set up.  I have a couple of questions.
    1.  Anything with Mac Mini defective?  Is it something for me to worry about?
    2.  After I use the USB Keyboard, will my system recognized the Apple keyboard and keep it memorized.  I don't have a problem doing a one time setup in this fashion, but if it continues then I'd like to nip it in the bud.
    3.  Should I take it to the Apple store?
    Thanks for all you help.

This is an all too common issue.  It happened for me as well.  I don't think there's anything defective on your mini.  I used a wireless keyboard (USB) to complete the setup.  Once I was in Lion, I paired my Apple BT keyboard and haven't had a problem since.

  • IPad Mini paired with bluetooth keyboard - periodically losing all Function keys

    iPad Mini 6.0.2 (10A550)
Model MD529LL (32 gig wifi only)
    Apple Bluetooth Keyboard (Model A1314)
I'm listening to the Mini, unplugged from power, with headphones, and the bluetooth keyboard connected.  When playing music using either the IOS Music app, or Pandora, I am periodically losing the keyboard Function keys (brightness, track back, play/pause, track forward, mute, and volume up and down).  Yet all other keyboard functions keep working -- I'm able to type email messages even though the Function keys are not working.
I have not found the exact combination of activities that causes the Function keys to stop working.  I've tried using only Pandora, or only Music, letting the screen sleep, wake it back up with different methods.  I can't break it at will, but eventually it does stop working.  A power off and reboot of the iPad restores functionality.
Has anyone seen a bug of this type reported yet?

  • Iconia W700P - need to access bluetooth keyboard during UEFI boot or need to boot from USB stick

Solved one problem, now faced with two more: The W700P will now boot from an Acronis TI recovery DVD, but to select the restore function (then the specific backup to restore), it needs input from a keyboard. The Bluetooth keyboard that came with the W700P does not work during the boot sequence. I'd rather not go out and purchase a USB keyboard, but that may be the only option. Or - Can the W700P boot from a USB stick? I've read that it cannot, but in looking at the Acer store, that is all they offer as recovery media for the W700P. I made a bootable USB stick when I first bought the computer, but I cannot get it to boot. All I get is repeated Acer splash screens, perhaps as it tries the various options in the boot order. I've tried changing the order, have set a boot password and turned off secure boot, but I still have the same issue. Any ideas??

Hi Justin, Putting in the flash drive before powering on results in repeating splash screens. I've tried hitting the Win key on the tablet (there's no access at all to the bluetooth keyboard) after pushing the power button, but it loops on the splash screen. I've tried holding the Win key and power buttons until the splash screen appears, and that gets me to the BIOS. Once there, even if I plug in the flash drive, it doesn't read the USB HDD type/model name. Moving the USB HDD to the first position works, but on reboot, I still get a "no bootable device" error (without the flash drive), or the splash screen loop (with the flash drive inserted). The BIOS shows HDD 000 as present, and with a serial number, etc., but it is not recognized as bootable. Thanks for hanging in there with me.eric

  • Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse - Flaky detection on startup

My 2009 MP regularly has trouble detecting the bluetooth keyboard and mouse on detection. Mouse will air after a minute or so buy keyboard is getting worse...

Have you tried reading the many other posts on this forum that talk about this issue? It seems that by default the services are not enabled for some peripheral devices. Try right-clicking the bluetooth icon, selecting "show my bluetooth devices" (or similar i dont ahve it in front of me), then right click the keyboard/mouse, go to the Services tab and make sure the services are enabled.

  • Mac Mini first boot and bluetooth keyboard not recognised

    Hi Apple Support Community-
I have just purchased a brand new Mac Mini and App Wireless Keyboard.  Unfortunately upon first boot, the Mac Mini is requesting I connect my bluetooth keyboard by switching it on, however even though the green light flashes, after the 5 second startup acknowledgement, there is no response from the Mac Mini.
To confirm the keyboard is working, I have successfully paired it with my MacBook.  I do not have a USB Keyboard or Mouse and without purchasing additional hardware, do you have any suggestions to work around this problem?
    Thanks, Julian

    Hi Julian,
Sometime a Mac can't pickup the connection of a bluetooth keyboard or mouse is normal. Whatever your Mac is brand new or not.
I will do the following if the brand new Mac can't pickup the bluetooth connection, but make sure the bluetooth keyboard and mouse is not yet paired with other computer, that means you have to un-pair the keyboard and mouse from your MacBook before you perform the follow step:
    - Switch off the Mac
    - Switch off the Keyboard and Mouse which not yet paired with other computer, remove its battery, and re-install the battery after 10 seconds
    - Switch on the Keyboard and Mouse first, make sure both devices have a green light flashes (the light flashed at intervals, like a pulse **...**...sorry my poor English), that means the devices is discoverable.
    - Switch on the Mac asap if all the bluetooth keyboard and mouse is ready, and let the Mac pair both device (according the screen instruction)
If the method still doesn't work, the worst case is: i'm afraid you have to connect wired keyboard and mouse to finish the Setup Assistant, and pair both bluetooth devices by Bluetooth Preferences. Once both bluetooth devices connected, disconnect wired keyboard and mouse.
