Losing chapters on export

Hello, I am using iMovieHD 6.0.3. I import a QT video slideshow created in FotoMagico. Then I am editing by adding titles and finally adding chapter markers. Everything runs fine in iMovie but when I export the QT video I lose all the chapter markers. I have tried all the QT export options to no avail. What am I doing wrong?
Also, if my application is to create the maximum quality QT video for play on the Mac what settings should I use?
I also do not think I can retain the chapters in a QT video to be uploaded to the web?
Thanks in advance! Rick

Rick,
I've been able to get this to work, here's how.
Open your movie in QuickTime, go to File, Export, for the Export select "Movie to Hinted Movie", that will create a Quicktime movie with the chapter markers.
To put the chapter markers in, either use your FotoMagico software (if it has that feature), or iMovie '06 HD or iMovie '08 + GarageBand '08

  • Problem with losing quality in exporting FLV

First I should emphasize that I am new to Adobe's products, and am learning it on the fly as part of a intelligent tutoring system design project. So I apologize for my lack of technical knowledge in advance. Rest assured I have put much effort in attempting to solve this problem on my own and by referencing this forum and other web sources, but sadly with no success.
FYI, I am using the CS4 Master collection.
My question pertains to retaining the quality of my video once I export it to .flv format via Media Encoder from Premiere Pro. My main video source is an .flv file that i have imported into my media browser. Initially I ran into a problem with the importing because it did not recognize H264 as having any media, and so I had to convert to Sorenson format to get it to import successfully. But it seems to have imported just fine without any loss of quality in the workspace. So that isn't my main issue but perhaps it is related.
I am having major issues with losing quality upon export back to .flv format - which is the format I am required to use - the video is being imbedded within a larger program and so it needs to have a smallish file size. For the life of me I cannot figure out any combination of settings that works. If I select same as source then I end up with a video that is surrounded by black borders. This may because the workspace is larger than my imported file. I have attempted to enlarge it to fit the safe margins but it hasn't helped. If I resize my output video to 640 x 480 - which is what I want - I get a shrinked video with black borders. If I crop the input to what I want I just lose quality - but I lose quality either way. I really want to accomplish this without increasing the bit rate (and thus the file size). I have tried just about every setting available and I still lose the quality. Is this just inevitable? Is there a plugin that would help? From what I can it seems that Adobe has more problems dealing with .flv than with other video formats, but I haven't found anything that pertains to this issue specifically.
Otherwise does anyone know of any other programs that can edit .flv files and offers multiple video & audio tracks?
Thanks in advance. If anything needs clarification let me know.

Ah yes I left out that detail. My source video is 640 x 480 also so the output is not an increase in size.
This is different from my sequence settings. Which is 1440 x 1080 16:9 ratio. Pixel Aspect Ratio is HD anamorphic 1080 (1.333).
I am assuming that this needs to be changed but I can't figure out how to do that (sequence settings are greyed out). Should I just start a new project?

  • How to add chapters to exported Apple TV movies

(The process works with QuickTime 7.4 and Final Cut Express 4.0)
To add chapters to movies exported from FCE using the "Apple TV" preset in the Export menu:
In a text editor, like TextEdit in the Applications folder, type your list of chapters.
Make each item very short (preferably one word but no more than two or three words) and separate each item with a carriage return.
    Choose Format/Make Plain Text.
Save the document as plain text.
In QuickTime Player, choose File > Open File, select the text file, and click Open.
Choose File > Export. In the Export pop-up menu, choose "Text to Text." In the Use pop-up menu, choose "Text with Descriptors."
Click Options. In the Text Export Settings dialog, select "Show Text, Descriptors, and Time"; select "Show time relative to start of Movie"; and set fractions of seconds to 1/30.
(The fractions really don't matter, we will change the value later)
Click OK, then click Save to create a text file with descriptors.
Open the exported list in your text editor, and open the target movie (formatted for Apple TV) in QuickTime Player.
Choose Window > Show Movie Inspector.
In QuickTime Player, drag the playhead on the timeline to find the first point in the movie where you want to begin a new chapter.
Use the Right and Left Arrow keys to step forward or backward a frame at a time as needed. Note the current time in the Inspector window.
In the text file, find the timeScale attribute and change to 24.46.
Next, find the first chapter title and change the timestamp just before that chapter title to the time you noted in the Inspector window.
Example: For a chapter called "one" that starts at 4 seconds, 21 frames into the movie, you would revise the text to look like this:
    (00:00:04.21)
    *{textBox: 0, 0, 50, 160}one*
    Ignore the textBox attribute.
Repeat steps until you've identified all the places in the movie that correspond to the chapter divisions and you've entered the proper timestamps in the text file.
Change the last timestamp (the one after the last chapter title in the text file) to match the duration of the movie.
    Save the text file.
Open the text file in QuickTime Player.
Choose Edit > Select All, choose Edit > Copy.
Click in the target movie, make sure the playhead is at the beginning, choose Edit > "Add to Movie"
QuickTime adds the text track to the movie.
Choose Window > Show Movie Properties.
In the Properties window, select the video or audio track you want to associate with the chapter track, and click Other Settings.
Normally you would choose the main video track.
(alternatively, choose audio track from the Chapters pop-up menu. If you have a movie with alternate subtitle or sound tracks, you can create multiple chapter lists in different languages and set the appropriate subtitle or sound track as the owner of each chapter list. The chapter list will change to match the selected language.)
    Select the text track.
Deselect the check box for the text track so that it doesn't display on top of the video.
The new track will still function as a chapter track.
Save the movie as a self-contained movie.
In the Finder, drag the movie to iTunes, and then Sync to Apple TV. The movie will play in Apple TV with Chapters!
-- This is modified from a QT7.2 tutorial, thanks to Tom Wolsky for pointing me in the right direction --

Thanks for explaining that in detail Mike.

  • Losing resolution when exporting...

I have made a few movies using photos and video clips set to music. When I export them, either using Quicktime or sharing them with iDVD, they lose a lot of resolution. Is there a way to burn these movies to DVD without losing quality?

I used the Ken Burns feature on every photo (70 total). Some of the photos are 3264x2448(8MP), most are 2592x1944(5MP), and a few are scanned photos size app. 2711x2033.
Okay. Would assume the still are being stored in your project as 1920x1440 frames. (You can check this out for yourself and I don't know if working in PAL mode would be different that NTSC.) In any case, the stored image resolution will be the limiting factor for export resolution.
When finished, I exported the video in Large size 720x576. At this resolution the quality was very deteriorated.
Just finished making a dozen runs duplicating your work flow in Compressor Native PAL, Compressor Native NTSC, 768x576, 640x480, etc. and cannot duplicate you problem without doing something like using a filter to overdrive the contrast like this:
    Preview in iMovie '08
    Output in QT Player
Output w/Overdriven Contrast in QT Player
Apple Care recommended that I share with iDVD, but I got the same results. Then I started experimenting with Quicktime, which is where I am now. I have tried several different sizes, including my own concoctions with the custom function (1382x1036 is what I'm exporting at now, I want to keep a 4:3 aspect ratio).
As indicated above, you can open your project folder and check the "Still Images" QT file which contains your stored photos to see their resolution. Max resolution depends on your project import settings (e.g., 1920x1080, 960x540, etc.) and their orientation. In any case, this is the max height resolution to which you can export your project at optimum quality for its aspect ratio. Remember, however, that whatever resolution you export your project to will later be re-scaled in iDVD down to 720x576 (PAL) or 720x480 (NTSC) for burning to DVD. If you think the increased processing time is worth whatever increase in quality you may achieve, then go for it.
The resolution looks acceptable (once I shrink the movie down to fit on the screen), but as I mentioned the color saturation is too high. In the quicktime filters, I adjusted the saturation down to 80 percent, and reduced the red by 5. Still waiting on the results...
    Still haven't a clue here.

  • Losing saturation when exporting from 1.3

    Hello!
I need some help. I just started noticing that when I export my jpegs from Lightroom that I am losing saturation in my images. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to change my settings to something else?
Is anyone else having this problem?
    I am exporting as RGB.
    Thanks!
    Jen

    Chaps,
I'm with Jao on this one.
    Here's how it is:
    |----------------------| ProPhoto Gamut
    |-------------------| Camera Gamut
    |----------------| Monitor Gamut
If you're in control of your colour management, you are exporting a ProPhoto file and then transforming it to sRGB:
    |----------------------| ProPhoto Gamut
    |                |  ^
    |                |  |_ "Clipped" data lost in transform
    |                |
    |----------------| sRGB Gamut
In this case "80% ProPhoto red" maps to "100% sRGB red" and the picture looks right, although it may be clipped. You can't see this clipping on the monitor though. The monitor can't tell the difference between "80% ProPhoto red" and "100% ProPhoto red". You understand I'm making it up with my "80%" and "100%", that's why they're in quotes.
If you're not in control of your colour management, you are exporting a ProPhoto file and then assigning sRGB to it:
    |----------------------| ProPhoto Gamut
    |                     /
    |                    /
    |                   /   <- Squeeze down assigning sRGB to ProPhoto pic
    |                  /
    |                 /
    |                /
    |----------------| sRGB Gamut
That produces exactly the symptoms you describe. Something that was "80% red" in ProPhoto should map to something "100% red" in sRGB as described above. With bad colour management, one maps "80% ProPhoto red" to "80% sRGB red" and they look nothing like each other.
    Note that so-called
color stupid applications - like Preview on Windows, for example - do exactly that.
However, both Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom are not color stupid.
I can easily force CS3 into doing it by a) not embedding the colour space when I save the file and/or b) "applying" a profile instead of "converting to" a profile.
Lightroom does neither of these things by default on my machine.
    Your mileage may vary.
    Damian

  • Losing image when exporting from CS5 to PDF

    Hi All!
I am working off of a file that was sent to me by our designer. I made a few small changes to some text and went to export to PDF and one (and only one) of my images is lost in the PDF!
The image was originally embedding in a .idml (mark up) file when it came from the graphic designer. I worked in that file and saved it as an .indd file (CS5) and exported. I then tried to delete the file and link it, no go. Re-embed it, still nothing. I've now tried exporting it once again to .idml and exporting to PDF with no success.
I then went in, opened the original .idml file and exported to PDF without making any changes and I'm still losing the image! My graphic designer is able to export just fine on his end (I'm pretty sure he's working on CS6) and we've had the peice printed once already, so I know it's something going array on my end.
I've also tried changing various export settings with no luck. What am I missing here?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Is CS5 patched to 7.0.4?
Is the image on a master page?
Is it visible when you switch to Preview mode?

  • Bloody Compressor losing chapters!

    Hello,
I have many 2-3 hour HDV1080i movie (.mov) files, @appx 26mbps data rates, sitting in my archive.  Am converting them to H264, resulting in files about 1/3 the size.  Those films are embedded FCP-7 produced Chapters.. Having an issue with Compressor:
When I import a movie, say, HDV.. and use Compressor to export using the H264 preset, the result is a file 1/3 the size, but the chapters are gone!  Compressor is eliminating them when encoding/exporting.. Etc.
However:  if I use QT to export as 1080P, those files are still H264/AAC/Text (under get info), but ALSO KEEP THE CHAPTERS.
Compressor has so many export choices (Presets), including H264... an several in a batch makes keystrokes easier, but ****!, why are the chapters not retained as with QT//Export/H264????
Note:  The QT option results in about 10.5mbps files.  I'm trying to get Compressor to export around 15mbps (a 'desired medium, using the preset H264 template and setting a 15000 max data rate), as well as just using the H264 preset. Both yield same results as with above.
    >> How can Compressor be made to export a .mov with H264 AND not drop the chapters.  The files WERE IMPORTED with perfectly good chapters!
    Thanks,
    Bob

I didn't see this and responded in your other thread.

  • Losing quality when exporting

I've made a slideshow consisting of various stills made in Photoshop (size 1400x1000). When I preview it inside of iMovie it looks just fine, but everytime I export it, it looks blurry. I've tried a lot of different export options and I've tried sharing it with iDVD and burning it to a DVD, but it still looked blurry.
Can anyone tell me what I have to do to make it export in the same quality as it is when previewed in iMovie?
    Thanks!

  • Why am I losing crop when exporting from LR (?)

Hi. I'm a newbie to LR and am stumped trying to figure something out (Yes, I've checked all through the forums).  I've made some adjustments to a bunch of photos in LR3--contrast, brightness, etc.  I've also cropped them to 5x7s.  When I export as a JPEG to a separate folder on my Mac, or when I choose to edit in Photoshop using the "Edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments" command, the photos show up with all the LR adjustments... EXCEPT for the crop.  The photos are showing up in the Mac folder and in Photoshop as their original photo size, i.e. their size when I imported them into LR from my card.
What am I missing or doing wrong?  When I export the photos, why aren't they showing up in a separate location or in Photoshop with the 5x7 crop that I performed in LR3?
thanks in advance .. this is driving me nuts.

I think more information is needed...  Can you post a screen shot from LR and PS showing the crop differences?
As the previous poster said, size is not an issue here, don't worry that your 5"x7" crop comes out as 20x28" in PS, if that is your issue.
That said, however, if you've cropped an image, when you export it the image should look the same.  Printing can be different, though, depending on how you are printing.  So let's stick with export/crop to start with!
Please post a couple of sceen shots, one showing LR and the crop you picked, and then one in PS after "edit in PS with LR adustments" done.
    Cheers!

  • Aperture 3: Losing quality when exporting to jpg

I'm downloading raw (nef) images to my hard drive from a Nikon D7000 then importing into Aperture 3. I make changes mostly with Enhance within Aperture 3 and using the Color Efex Pro 4 plug-in. Looks great in Aperture and if I export using any of the tiff options. Quality remains the same. But if I export to jpg (any of the options) or open the tiff in Photoshop Elements and convert to jpg I loose quality. The photo looses sharpness. I have a tif and jpg side by side and the difference is huge. I want to upload to my website so therefore need to use jpg but I'm hating how poor the quality is.
Any suggestions? I see other people are having similar issues.
    Thanks!

How are you viewing the exported JPG?  What is the size of the JPG file?
If you open it in Preview and then go to Tools->Show Inspector you'll get some info on the makeip of the file.
Here is an example of an exporte JPG at quality 12 and original size:

  • Why am I losing quality when exporting to PDF from Numbers?

Hi guys, so I need to export a fairly large table I have to PDF so that I can get it into the report. It looks beautiful in Numbers, and then when I go to print, size it the way I want it, save as PDF, I get a crappy looking table....Lines have just randomly disappeared or faded. What is going on and how do I fix this?! It looks great in Numbers, I don't understand why it should look any different when I print to PDF.... Here is a screen shot inside Numbers, notice the lines look perfect....then a screen shot after exporting in Preview, notice how some of the lines are totally gone. You'll see the rows for "depth" have a dotted line to dived them....in preview the dotted line just disappears in one spot, but not in another. It's totally random and I've no idea how to fix it....

    Hi randiceleste,
How are you applying that dotted Cell Border?
Using 1 point dotted Border below a row in Numbers:
Then Menu > File > Print... > Print... > PDF > Save as PDF
What point size are you applying?
    Regards,
    Ian.

  • Losing sync while exporting

I have a series of 1-2 minute clips I'm having trouble exporting. They were shot, captured, and edited on HDV. When I go to export them using Quicktime conversion, the audio plays fine but the video will frequently skip. It goes in and out of sync several times during the minute long clip and is completely unusable. Are there any settings I can change to prevent this from happening?

This is what an eye your more recent image looks like at full resolution, which to me looks less than optimal.  The skin and hair is overly smoothed and there is a halo of overly sharp pixels along edges.  The grainy image in your first example looks much better to me because the hairs and skin details are visible.  You should be using 1:1 zoom when doing the detail work.
Here is the "Original" size of your more recent image:

  • Losing filename on export

OK, so using LR 2.4 and in my workflow I renamed my photos earlier than normal in an effort to better organize. Now everything is done and I am ready to export to a "finished folder" but lightroom is trying to export based on the original filename and I want to use the current filename. The file is currently named correctly when I go into the folder but on export LR wants to use the original name and I cannot find a way to change any of the presets in the export dialogue to allow me to use the CURRENT filename on export not the original
Any ideas, other than renaming after export next time?

    Ed.Macke wrote:
LR wants to use the original name
What makes you say this? Are you exporting the files and looking at the names in Explorer/Finder? Or is there something in the Export window that says this?
For this reason. I have renamed the file using F2 as visible in this image.
however when I go to export to a finished folder t save all my changes and post to web/send some for printing I get this
I won't allow me to use the CURRENT filename. If I open the actual Windows folder where the file sits on the PC it is named correctly but on export LR wanst to use the OLD filename. If I go into this dialog further I get oprions to add #s and special text but nothing that allows me to use the current filename. If I choose filename options I get "filename" with several variations and I get "Orginalfilename". In my case functionally they are the same, they only allow the original filename

  • FINAL CUT EXPRESS 4.01 - losing quality while exporting to file

    Hey guys,
I'm dealin with a basic problem, which has been probably reviewed before, but just wanted to present my personal issue with it, and wonder if anyone could help me with this.
I shot clips with Canon 550d (1920x1080 30fps) and then converted them with Mpegstreamclip using Apple Intermediate Codec to 1280x720 30fps (however which also concerns me, in the browser i can see that they're 1280x720, but on the timeline after clicking Item properties, they are clearly 1920x1080). Easy Setup is set to HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720p 30 (maybe that's the part i'm doing wrong).
The thing is, it looks perfect, sharp and smooth on the canvas, but after exporting it loses it's depth of colours and sharpness etc.
Settings I'm using for exporting are those suggested f.e. by Vimeo site:
    Compression: H264
    Frame Rate: Current
    Key Frames: every 30
    Data Rate: limited to 5000kbps
Size: HD 1280x720 16:9 (tried also with 1280x720 HD but seems the same naturally)
Frame Reordering - ticked (it's done automatically, should i untick it?)
    Mac details: Mac OS X 10.6.8, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / 2,5 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
You can check the result here:
    http://vimeo.com/32730130
    or
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsEednjpcQk&hd=1
I'm really looking forward to any tips that can help. Thank You very very much:)

Use *MPEG Streamclip* to convert the MPEG2 files to QuickTime using Apple Intermediate Codec. However, if you shot 4:3 video then you may have to convert the video to QuickTime using Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC instead of Apple Intermediate Codec. These are selections you make in MPEG Streamclip. (Your camera can record video as 4:3 or 16:9 standard def but there is precious little information about its 16:9 mode. You may have to play around with some of the settings in MPEG Streamclip.) Once you have converted the files, you will import the converted files into FCE (FCE > File > Import > Files).
Do note, however that you also need to have the *QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component* installed on your Mac. You may need to buy it if you don't already have it. (Links provided in my previous post.)
QuickTime7 Pro is not the app you need to do this conversion.

  • LOSING  Resolution when exporting to DVD!!! NEED  TO KEEP QUALITY

    Hey guys,
I used compressor to compress some HD (1920x1080 29.97 fps Apple Pro Res422 (HQ) footage to transfer to DVD Studio Pro.
I compressed it at MPEG-2 /Audio AC3. Reason is because i don't want to make an HD DVD. I want greatest quality on SD DVD.
Looks great on simulate, but looks horror on the disc. With 3 trail and error attempts, i failed. is there a setting i must go through in dvd studio to keep the res...
What do I need to do?

    Hi,
You're going to need to recapture the show from the HDCAM tape to a 10 bit uncompressed Quicktime file. Then encode directly to Mpeg 2 from that file. It will only take a little while to encode with an 8 core machine.
If you were capturing raw footage for editing from the HDCAM tapes, then you'll need to recapture and reedit the show, or otherwise replace your Pro Res codec sequence clips with the 10 bit uncompressed versions. And then, with the right Compressor settings upon export, your show will look just like a high quality standard def version of the HD movie.
Basically, the Prores Codec is heavily compressed already, and not intended for final distribution, and certainly not to be encoded to Mpeg 2 from. You know what they say - "you only get one compression pass to keep quality"; you are compressing heavily twice.
I was involved with the proofing of the Baraka DVD (MPI Home Video release) - the highest resolution movie ever created for standard and hi def DVD (8000 X 8000 pixels per frame, shot on custom iMax cameras; took them over a month to capture all the frames to hard drive). They too, encoded directly from the uncompressed source; and the standard def version DVD looks like HD on my big screen.
    Take care,
    Trai
