  • MacBook Pro OSX 10.6 drops Wi-Fi connection when idle/asleep.

My MacBook Pro OSX 10.6 has begun to lose Wi-Fi connection when idle. I can't re-connect unless I shut down computer and re-start. Worse, the system appears to lock up--I can't force quit, must press the power button to shut down. This problem occurs wherever I am using my laptop, not just with one particular Wi-Fi network.

I have been having the same issue for the last two weeks. No real indication as to why it ever began other than I had turned off my router and Airport Extreme Base Station off for a weekend while I was away from my place.
iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, all have no issues at all with my Airport Extreme Base Station. Can stay connected throughout my living room, bathroom, bedroom, no issues whatsoever.
My 5 month old MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz Core i7 Airport is sometimes perfect, able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue. Then, for no reason, I won't be able to join my wireless network, or when I can join, I can't pick up an IP address. And then it will connect, pick up and IP, and then it won't browse. No real rhyme or reason to when this will happen, or when it works.
I thought that it was an issue with my MacBook Pro, but then my sister visited with her brand new MacBook Pro 2.26 Intel Core 2 Duo, and while a month ago she was able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue, this weekend she had all of the same issues I was having.
My XBOX 360 and MacBook Pro have absolutely no issues with the wired connection. Only my WAN seems to have this issue.
Did you ever find anything more to this?

  • Magic Mouse Losing Connection When Slightly Knocked

I've had this particular mouse for just over a year and in the last 2 weeks it's started to lose the connection when it's knocked however slightly on the table - for example when repositioning the mouse when moving something between 2 screens.
I've tried all the usual fixes, new batteries, different batteries, trashing the mouse preferences (as suggested here) and making the mouse a BT favourite, but as soon as it even remotely gets knocked, it disconnects.
Really frustrating, have gone back to a cable mouse for now but does anyone have any ideas? Is it a genuine fault I can get sorted under my warranty?

OK I spent  A solid day playing with this and found that there are many correct"ish" answers here, but for the most part I have found that the physical tolerances of the Apple  magic mouse have caused all of my problems.
THe info about plists and resetting pram are all kind of obvious choices and may work for many people becasue the mouse screws up in that way on occasion.
For the rest of us, check my earlier post about tolerances. THe battery end plate is one problem. The inserted card thing by Ken Evans is one piece of the puzzle. However for me the biggest piece of the puzzle is the tolerances of the battery plate cover in general.
The piece that fell into place a day ago  ( a few hours afte my last post) is as follows:
Look closely at the plate  on the bottom of the mouse - notice how thin it is. Notice how closely it touches the on off switch. Notice that if the plate is tweaked even a little bit it twiddles the on off swich breaking connection. Notice how you use the mouse a- do you lift it and put it down and perhaps press on the plate etc.
Notice if you press and push and drop mouse etc - anything that twiddles the plate will nail that switch.
For me I found that the plate was tweaked  such that the middle of the plate  pressed harder against the batteries than the ends did. This effectively "shortened" the length of the plate by a smidge  which was just enough to constantly tweak the on off switch - ie put pressure on it with any major movements of the mouse - especially lifting it and putting it down when i ran to the end of my  pad.
I re-tweaked the plate in the opposite direction ( not for the klutz- this plate will buckle faster than a teenager with a false id). if you feel handy you can tweak it by springing it lightly against a pencil but I am not buying anyone a new plate  if you bend it.  I also took a small swiss rat-tail file and filed out the  switch hole a bit more - to make it a bit "longer" and hence not rub against the plate
Result is that  i went from  a lost connection about every minute to no lost connections for the last day. For me the  resetting of the pram and dumping the plist file did not help - hence i looked further.

  • Magic Mouse Losing Connection When Sleeping

My magic mouse loses its connection when my iMAC goes to sleep. I have the preferences setup to allow my iMAC to be awakened by bluetooth devices... Any suggestions?

Let me add, that this happens when the machine is asleep and all user are logged out... I have to use the wired key board to wake the machine up and then I can log in at the user log in prompt.

  • WiFi looses connection when idling

    Hi,

The connection has to idle only for a few seconds till Mavericks decides to drop it. What can be done against this?

Try going to the Energy Saver preferences in Preferences, and change the "power adapter" sleep settings.
I think Mavericks by default has it go to sleep after about 15 minutes, when before it just powered the screen off.

  • Ichat loses connection when idle

whenever my computer idles, my connection w/ ichat is lost! what can i do to stop this from happening? I don't have the connectivity problem any other time...

    No problem:
By the way, welcome to Apple Discussion.
Unfortunately, whenever your mac goes to sleep, iChat will disconnect.
The only way to resolve the issue is to not have your computer not go to sleep. You can however, just have your screen go to sleep (System Preferences>Energy Saver>Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for>Never and Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for>Whatever setting you prefer.
    I hope this helps!

I got an external monitor connected to a MacBook Pro, whenever Windows goes standby the monitor turns off (also goes to standby mode), I can wake up Windows but the monitor remains without connection. I can manually make it work again by going to the NVIDIA screen.
Is there any way to make this work automatically?

  • Losing connection when online gaming

Good day. I've been having trouble with my airport extreme + time capsule. Whenever I try to play an online game (e. g. Loadout via Steam) whole network goes down for a while rendering it impossible to avoid disconnecting from the game. Any ideas?
Computer is Vista SP2 (yeah, I know) with Belkin N adapter.
    Thank you.

Are you already using the Linksys Smart Wifi? Set up media prioritization in the router and see if that will improve the connection with the xbox. Is the connection intermittent with other devices? Is there like a specific time in the day where your connection will drop?

I'm running vista on desktop and xp on wireless laptop.  Wireless works fine until I try making network secure.  When I secure it, i can no longer access it from my laptop.   Should I be doing special in my laptop??

Make sure that you have WEP Security on your router if you have XP on Wireless Laptop as sometimes WPA does not work on XP...

  • Losing connection when phone rings

Whenever I use my landline I always lose my connection to the Internet. This includes incoming and outbound calls
I had this as a previous problem before, I had a engineer visit who fitted a new box. Still had the problem and the engineer could not figure out the issue, assuming it was a fault with the exchange as my broadband speed was very poor.
After a week or so the issue seemed to have been resolved and I could use my phone and the Internet at the same time.
However. The problem is back, and only happened after a fault with the exchange a few weeks ago. I called the helping and the person on the other end of the line was not very helpful at all. He arranged for someone to check the line and box outside, which he did and said the problem was fixed. However it was not. I pointed out about the prev problem a few years ago and the fact that it only started happening after the fault at the exchange but he did not want to know.
All I am after is an answer to find out where the issue lies.
Is it a problem with the exchange.
Is it a problem with my hub.
Is it a problem with my box.
Any ideas because I can not keep waiting in, having engineers tell me its fixed then its not.

Hi Sorry there is no way other than moving it is not practical or cost effective to just move one person you may be miles from your next nearest exchanger by cable length which could in the worse state leave you with a no broadband at all situation

  • VZ MiFi2200 to CradlePoint CTR35 to laptop losing connection when hardwired

My current setup is VZ MiFi2200 to CradlePoint CTR35 to laptop. The connection from the MiFi to the CTR35 is USB. If the connection from the CradlePoint to laptop is wirelessly everything works fine but as soon as I try to hardwire from the CradlePoint to the laptop using ethernet I lose connection.
Would anyone have any ideas as to what I can try to prevent this from happening as I would like to have everything hardwired?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Problem solved. I was able to get a lot of help by reading the following two threads. What worked for me was the order in which I powered on my equipment. Yes, it was that simple.

  • MX892 Keeps losing connection when needed.

I don't have a straight USB cord for this thing, and I'm ready to go all 'office space' on it. It'll work for a good while, but whenever we actually need it. (it will fail!) It'll say 'Printer not responding' in the canon box.
The 'Windows 7' box - says ' Error-Printing'.   The Canon IJ Network Tool says - 'Canon MX890 Series Printer' - Status: Not Found - Port Name: CNB##Masked### However I can get it to work intermittedly by... 1) abruptly, Pulling the power cord from the printer ... 2) cancelling any failed print jobs... 3) then after putting the power back in, it will accept print jobs again through the wireless network. But of course these steps are entirely too much for my wife.I tried to plug it - wired to the lan.  But it says I need to temporary plug it into USB which I don't have.  I can get one.

Hi DavidNJ, I would like to see what link quality and signal strength is being reported by the printer.  Use the following steps to print the LAN Details which will show this information: 1.  Make sure that the machine is turned on. Load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper 2.  Press the Menu button .Select Setup , then press the OK button.3.  Select  Device settings, then press the OK button.  4.  Use the  button to select LAN settings, then press the OK button. 5.  Use the  button to select Confirm LAN settings, then press the OK button.  6.  Use the  button to select Print LAN details, then press the OK button to confirm the selection. 7.  Use the  button to select Yes, then press the OK button to start printing   Let us know the Link Quality and Signal Strength.  Also, please let us know roughly how far the printer is from the router as well as if there are any walls or floors that seperate the two.
