Losing ethernet port after turning on internet sharing

Just received a new iMac with Mountain Lion.  I am connected to the internet through ethernet.  I was setting up to share my internet access through the system prefs panel and internet sharing checkbox.  This used to be called web sharing.  However, once I check internet sharing to turn it on, I lose my internet connectivity through my ethernet port.  If I turn on my wifi, and set the status order to use wifi works, then the internet access works ok.  If I uncheck internet sharing, the ethernet port does not come back working.  I have to delete that ethernet port under the Network panel and then create a new ethernet port.  Then everything will work again.  I have not seen this problem before.
Any ideas appreciated.

Next time the ethernet drops off, try opening System Preferences/Network, click on the Assist me button, and run Diagnostics to see if that will show you anything helpful. If the ethernet is working now, likely the test will not show anything.
If you monitor the "More Like This" box (top right), other threads appear. Opening them usually displays other threads. Maybe you can find other ideas there.

  • Can't turn off internet sharing

My brand new MacBook Pro has been working perfectly--until out of the blue internet sharing turns on everytime I boot up. I have never used internet sharing and certainly don't want to now, because I can't use my wireless network with it on.
My internet connection has been working flawlessly and I made no changes whatsoever (it simply was on once after booting up, and now is on forever), but I CAN'T turn off internet sharing. In my internet sharing preference panel it says that internet sharing is already off, but my airport menu bar says it is on. This is becoming most irritating. Any suggestions?

Are you sure this is not just a neighbour's wireless network?

  • If I turn on Internet Sharing if I have to get a different plan or does it just impact my current data?

I really like my Windows Phone. I have a Nokia Lumia 928 too bad Verizon is in bed with Apple, I'd like to know if I turn on Internet Sharing if I have to get a different plan or does it just impact my current data?

We want you to always get the most out of your device, DaveBootsma! What plan are you currently on? The Nokia Lumia 928 is Mobile Hotspot compatible. If on a More Everything plan the Mobile Hotspot usage is included as part of your data plan.

  • Turning on Internet Sharing via Airport disrupts internet connection!

I have a very strange problem.
My iMac G5 (10.4.10) is connected to broadband via an Ethernet cable. Everything works perfectly, Google Earth works, emails come through, internet downloads are perfect...
    BUT!!
When I turn on my Internet Sharing to share my Ethernet connection via my Airport connection (to let my husband surf the net on his PC) all **** breaks loose on my Mac.
Google Earth does not function properly, all internet downloads (.dmg) come up with "codec overrun errors", all images sent via email downloaded through Entourage are corrupted, the list is endless. I have to turn off my Internet Sharing, turn off Airport, and then everything returns to normal again.
Why is this, and can someone help stop the fights my Husband and I are having when it comes to sharing the Broadband connection through my Mac - I don't want to because my Mac goes crazy!
    Ta muchly!!!

Sorry but an Ethernet hub will NOT properly share the ISP connection. The ISP only gives you a single IP address. If you use a hub (or Ethernet switch), the first computer you turn on will win and get the only IP address. The other computer will not be able to connect.
To properly share the connection, you need to get a router. The router uses the single public IP address provided by your ISP and creates multiple local IP addresses for your computers.

  • Dynadock U3.0 - Not able to use Ethernet port after Win 8.1 update

    Hi everybody,
i am using a Dynadock u3.0 dock with my Vaio SCP 13.
Since I updated my device to Windows 8.1 Update 1 I am not able to use the Ethernet port of the Dynadock.
    Before that everything worked fine.
I am not able to reinstall the drivers correctly (tried 7.6m0, 7.5m2). While the driver insaller tries to start i am getting an error message, that the installer is not able to set a bunch of registry Keys (SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DisplayLinkGA\D evice1) (till 0). (Image 1)
If i ignore those messages and do install the driver, the Ethernet port will remain uninstalled in the device manager. (Image 2)
If I try to install the driver manually (DisplayLink Network Adapter NCM), Ill get an error message that a driver was found but that the access was denied. (Image 3)
I started the safe mode and could install the driver. But if I reboot to normal mode, the device could not be started.
I also tried to disable UAC and I am logged in as the "real" administrator.
Please find the error messaged attached (in German):

BTW: If I unzip the installer (7.6m0) and install the *inf for the right ven&dev (4503) it still does not work...
I dont know what to do anymore...

    Hi
After Windows 8.1 upgrade, you should also update the Display Link driver/software
    This is very important!
The latest driver can be downloaded here:
    http://www.displaylink.com/support/downloads.php
Note: the old version should be removed!

  • Using separate ethernet ports for LAN and internet

    Following scenario:
A couple of Lion clients and a Lion server connected to a switch. Switch connected to router for internet access. All devices, clients, server and router are in the same C-Class net.
I'd like to connect the Lion server with 2 ethernet ports to the switch, so that one port is solely used for connections to the Lion clients (aka LAN) and the other port is solely used for connections to the internet. That way heavy LAN traffic to/from the server cannot bog down internet access to the server. Any ideas how to acomplish that?
Usually you would configure the Lion server as a router and connect the Lion clients (via a switch) to one port and the cable modem to the other, so both ports are in different subnets. But I don't want all internet traffic from the clients going through the Lion server.
The best I've come up so far was to configure both ethernet ports with static IP addresses. The one connecting to the clients with a 255.255.255.0 netmask but no router IP given. The one for internet with a 255.255.255.255 netmask and the router IP set to my physical router IP. It seems to work, but I'm not sure, whether this is the suggested way to do such a setup.
Maybe some manual editing of the routing table is are more solid solution?
    Any tips appreciated.
    Pete

What you want to do can be done but maybe not the way you are trying.
First yes, you would use two Etherner ports on the Mac, if it is a Mac Pro or XServe it has two built-in, other Mac models can do this using a USB Ethernet interface.
Next, the way I would normally do this is to have a separate switch for the WAN router, this would make the setup look like the following
LAN Switch ----- Server ------------ Router --- Internet
           | |                             |
           | |                            NAT
           | +-----------------------------+
           |
           +------ Client Devices
The router could be doing NAT via one interface, or a separate Firewall box could do the NAT.
Another possible way would involve segmenting the lan switch by setting up a VLAN and putting one port for the Servers second Ethernet connection on to that VLAN (using public IP addresses and the a connection to the router on that VLAN, the LAN switch could then route between the two VLANs. Cheaper LAN switches do not have this ability.

  • Can Apple TV ethernet port be used as internet "out"?

I have my new Applet TV connected to my network wirelessly and everything is working fine. Given it's connected wirelessly, can the ethernet port be used as an "outbound" network connection? I want to connect my digital satellite box to the internet and the only way to get internet to it right now is to have an Airport Express connected. Seems a waste to have an Apple TV and Express right beside each other just for one more internet connection.
    Thanks,

    no they can't

  • Turn off internet sharing.

Now My Ibook says my internet sharing in on but in my sharing folder under internet is says it is off. How can I resolve and get back to my reg. network??

I've got a similar problem - but can't find where to delete the computer-to-computer network. I've deleted some locations (foolishly perhaps)... but am in a bit of a muddle.
I created the computer to computer network before setting up airport properly on my powermac - which was stupid - but now both my laptops are working fine (using airport to connect to the internet), but the powermac won't work at all with the airport. It says that internet sharing is on in the status bar, but off when in preferences. And even on, it won't share the internet with the others and neither can i use airport admin or airport utility - because of this internet sharing problem.
is there any way i can start again?
    help!

  • Does the newest Airport Express not serve ethernet port internet?

I have DSL to my tower with an 802.11N Airport card, I used the Airport Utility to 'make a new network' with an Airport Express 802.11N connected to my home theatre, and it works fine streaming iTunes.
The cable co. makes you register the MAC address of the machine that will be served by the DSL modem, and allows up to two other addresses if phoned in otherwise any other MAC address attached direct to the DSL will not get a signal.
I have made the network 'closed' and WEP2, then used the MAC address exclusions in Airport Utility to add a bit of extra protection.
Under this set up I was under the impression that the tower would still serve DCHP addresses wirelessly to the Express to anything that knew the network name and password.
The previous generation of Express used to be able to allow you to plug in a PDA with an ethernet card and be serving the ethernet, what is the problem with continuing that on the newest version? I see no point in being tied down to where ever the cable co. installed the modem just to use my PDA on the net, or cart the tower around the house to PDA connect to.
The stupid Express was a great solution for that previously...walk to a wall socket plug in establish the network and connect something to the ethernet port.
With previous Airport Utility software it was fairly clear as to whether you have turned on the ethernet port of the Express to serve an internet connection, with the latest AU software it is not.
I CANNOT serve any DSL signal through the Express no matter what setting I have tried. Turning off the firewall settings, MAC addy exclusions, 'closed' network to open, and attempting to reset the Express with something other than the bridge configuration makes no change (or functional) signal service to the Express.
I even imagined I would have to go through System Preferences and turn on Internet Sharing (sub selections, Share your connection from: "Built-In Ethernet" and further selection "To computers using: Airport"
The only thing I didnt try tinkering with was the Web Proxy (HTTP) protocol selection as Glimmerblock uses that to help do its job, but that also doesnt make sense to downstream blocking the ethernet port from serving a web connection.
If I try the other Simple Setup selections under AU software, I royally lose detection of the Express and otherwise does not do any favors for making this work. Someone here told another person to use the setup assistant chosing "Join existing network" but thats wrong, the tower cant make the network with just the Airport Card alone, it needs the Express available to 'make a new' network... you cant even access any panels of Airport Utility without the Express being reset and ready for programming with the AU software.
Is there a way to make the port serve outgoing internet signal grabbed wirelessly from the tower?
Mucho appreciato if someone could suggest what is up.

No no, not an unsecure network, Im saying once the basic Assisted setup was followed in the previous OS 10.4 for Airport, you could go back in manually and set things to WDS which supposedly was the only way to go CableModem~Tower~Airport to Express~out express ethernet port to wired only machine.
Ive tried doing it that way for this newer Airport Utility and its frustrating as blankity, the only way to make a wireless network is between the tower's airport card to the express, you cant make just a network with the built in Tower Card at all. Then you could force the express to join it, otherwise it wont work.
I tried the WDS Main/Remote/Relay settings both ways with the Airport ID addresses for the tower AND express, switching them hoping one works, all I get is infinite loop of having to reenter the airport setup password when the express is updated and rebooted.
It wasnt this intricate before, is all Im saying. All it took was setting to WDS mode after going thru basic setup, checkmarking the box, updating the unit, restarting and there, the express served the wired client through the ethernet port.

  • Internet Sharing Ethernet to WiFi disables WEP password on Mac Network?

    Hi all,
I have a curious problem, I'm trying to use internet sharing to share the ethernet connection to my iMac with my iPhone and iPad over wireless (no wifi where I live).
I can create a network with WEP fine, name it whatever, encrypt it with whatever, my iPhone can connect to it etc. but as soon as I turn the tick box for Internet Sharing on, the network loses its WEP encryption (so it's unprotected) and its name reverts back to "My Name's iMac", even if I set it up as "3423rfgdfgfdg" with WEP.
Basically turning on Internet Sharing overrides all the options I set up on the network, name, security etc and my WiFi turns into an unprotected internet source and a broadcast of my name, something I don't want where I live.
Am I crazy in thinking this is a bug not a feature and there must be some solution?
I honestly look forward to seeing what you guys think, I'm stumped.
This all used to work perfectly on Snow Leopard, I remember quirks during Lion but I got it to work in the end but I'm on ML now and it just doesn't want to work.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion but that's exactly what I'm doing.
See how after you've selected Ethernet in 'Share your connection from' and WiFi in 'To computers using' you then have to click the tick box ( http://cl.ly/image/1v191f2R1F1i ) on the left hand side to actually start the whole process?
Well regardless of whether I start it up in the 'Sharing' pref first, then set up Wireless options, or set up wireless options, then start it up in the 'Sharing' pref, whatever settings I choose get overriden as soon as I start the sharing.
The network just defaults to 'Asad's iMac', without protection. I don't understand why.
P.S. on a side note when creating networksI'm not offered a WPA2 option. Only WEP 40-bit or 128-bit. Dunno if that's connected: http://cl.ly/image/2X2g3w3y0B34

  • Sharing Ethernet port

I'm on a wireless network and have a SIP phone in the office: On my, soon to be retired, Powerbook G4 (in OS 10.2.8) All I had to do to get the phone to work was check share this internet connection in the network control panel. The mac then established itself as a DHCP server for the ethernet port and routed my phone traffic over the wifi (airport)
On my MacBook Pro (OS 10.4.9) the options have changed slightly: The options seem to make perfect sense: I am sharing my connection from the Airport card to the ethernet. only problem: It doesn't work. I don't have the firewall turned on (although I'd rather change this) just to avoid a conflict. What am I doing wrong?
PS: I seem to have way too much routing going on by what netstat is reporting but then I can't really read NetStat reports; This is not so much a case of being IP ignorant (although I'm no Guru) as it is not having any reference materials for netstat codes. Can someone direct me on how to read a netstat report?

The portable has to hand out DHCP addies to anything that wishes to share it's connection, it simply must.
The G5 will not be getting a DHCP addy from the Wireless LAN via Ethernet, the portable is the go between, and it's the only one that needs to get an addy from the router.
    A possible scenario...
Portable gets IP of 10.0.1.2 from Router 10.0.1.1, G5 will have a Router setting of 10.0.1.2, (the portable), and gets a pseudo IP of 10.0.2.3 from the pseudo Router 10.0.1.2, (the portable), with the portable translating where the two different base packets go to/from.
"Is there anyway to see if THE PORTABLE is a DHCP server ?
Yes, if the Portable is set to "share" it's Internet Connection, then it will be a DHCP Server, pure and simple.
And can it be truned off?
Yes, very easily... turn off Internet Sharing".
Is there a GUI to manage DHCP or is it throught config files?"
Depends what/how you want to manipulate them, but the only thing you need to do with it ... is GUI via Sharing & Internet.
The G5 just needs to Join the portables advertised network to get connected, iirc.

  • Internet sharing no longer works after 10.5.3 upgrade

I'm aware that a number of people seem to be having wireless networking problems after upgrading to 10.5.3. I apologise if this has been covered somewhere else, but after trawling the forum I haven't been able to find any posts which deal with my specific issue. So any suggestions would be gratefully received...
My 24" 2.8GHz Intel iMac (purchased in Feb 2008) is connected to the internet via ethernet cable through a Speedtouch router supplied by my ISP, o2.
This internet connection is shared wirelessly with the other computer in the house, a G4 MDD running 10.3.9. After switching on Internet Sharing within System Preferences on the iMac, the G4 picks up and connects to the network created by the iMac, which is called (My Name)'s iMac.
All very straightforward, and until a few days ago this set up worked perfectly.
Then I decided to upgrade the iMac from 10.5.1 to 10.5.3, using the Combo updater downloaded from the Apple website.
As far as the iMac is concerned, the upgrade went perfectly and I have no problems whatsoever. I can still access the internet without difficulty as before.
The problem is with the G4. It no longer picks up the network from the iMac. The network's name ((My Name)'s iMac) no longer appears in the drop-down list under the Airport icon in the G4's menu bar (although this list does still contain the names of various neighbours' networks, as it did before, so the Airport in the G4 does still seem to be functioning). Internet sharing on the iMac is still switched on, and the Airport icon in its menu bar indicates that it is "transmitting", but the G4 is just not "receiving" any more. As a result, we can't get online on the G4.
I would be very grateful if anyone could shed any light on this problem. If there is any further information I can supply which might help, please ask.
    Steve

    Hi SteveSCA-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards
Have you tried powering everything down and then back up again?
Have you repaired permissions on the iMac?

  • Problem in Internet Sharing from Ethernet to wifi

Whenever i go to Preferences > Sharing >  Click Internet Sharing > From Ethernet > to wifi and hit start. It actually creates my wifi access point but the problem is that i lose my internet connection from both, my mac from which the connection is being shared and my cellphone which is connected to it. I can not identify what is the problem, but i have tried it many times with or without the WPA2 personal key. Even after stopping the internet sharing, i have to plug out and then in my ethernet cable in order to connect to internet.
This problem was also on OS X mavericks with me last year, but it resolved automatically, i don't know how. But since when i have upgraded to yosemite, i can't make my hotspot connection working . Suggest any quick and effective way please.

    Same problem over here...
Additionally: if I unplug Gigabit-Ethernet-Adapter and plug it in again while Internet Sharing is still activated, the internet via ethernet works, but breaks down again about a minute later...

  • IMac 10.8 Internet sharing stopped working after upgrade from 10.7

My iMac 27 (10.7) with Internet Sharing enabled has been working perfectly since last year. After upgrading to 10.8, I noticed the up arrow flashes and goes to regular WiFi mode. Stopping/starting the service causes the up arrow to flash again and immediately default to WiFi. I removed Ethernet and WiFi options from Network settings and re-installed which solved the Internet sharing from flashing and defaulting to WiFi mode. However, connecting to the Internet sharing from other devices (iphone/ipad) does not work and will not connect to the internet. On the iMac, I'm able to browse the Internet without issues.
If I disconnect the Ethernet cable and plug into either my MacBook or MacBook Pro and enable Internet sharing, everything works perfectly and all my other devices can use the Internet.
Now sure how to further troubleshoot and resolve this issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I should add that the iMac is running Mac OS X Server which was also upgraded to 10.8. I was looking inside the Server for security options that restricted internet access via Internet sharing. Nothing.
    Thank you!
    David

    Thanks for your answer.
Unfortunately this isn't a solution for my problem. As I understood, you showed me that your IP addresses had changed after enabling/disabling internet sharing. I checked my IP addresses after enabling/disabling internet sharing by using "ifconfig" but they are the same as set manually before.
My other strange observation regarding the ping command has gone now. After switching on internet sharing I had to disconnect the ethernet cable and plug it in again. Then the ping between both computers is working (but still not internet sharing).
Anyway ... thanks for your help!
