Losing express pc to printer connection

We have an Airport Express network at home with 3 Macs and a Dell notebook running off it without any problem. We have an Epson C86 hooked up as our network printer and it works fine with the Macs. I've had trouble establishing and maintaining the Dell connection to the printer through the network. I am using Bonjour for Windows to make the connection. On a daily basis we seem to suddenly lose the printer connection from the Dell, although the airport network is working fine on the Dell otherwise. I seem to have to delete the printer, restart the Dell, then using the Bonjour wizard re-add the C86 back, usually taking several attempts. Typically the printer doesn't show up the first couple of tries in the Bonjour window. It's typical computer hocus pocus; I unplug the USB to the Express, plug it back in, restart the Dell, wave my arms around, and finally the C86 shows up in the Bonjour window and I can get it to work again. Does anyone have an idea why I keep losing this Windows to Express printer connection?

Thanks for your interest Henry. You seem to be the only one chiming in on this subject. I actually had even more trouble getting the network printer to work using the method you linked. The Bonjour software works well when it works, but it seems glitchy. It does seem possible that some other protection software might be interfering. I use Trend Micro's pc-cillin for anti-virus protection. There is also some built in Dell firewall running. I tried undoing that but I wasn't clear in my mind if it matters if I have my Trend Micro running and Dell's internal firewall off, if that is a dangerous configuration (boy, that is some bad syntax or grammar in that sentence). In an earlier version of this post you mentioned the possibility of a VPN affecting this connection. My wife does have a VPN with her real estate firm that she uses on her Dell notebook, so I have instructed her today to see if after she uses the VPN if we lose the printer connection. I am trying to convince her to let me just hook up an extra printer directly to her notebook, but the area she is working in is crowded already.

I can't print wirelessly using Airport Express.  I have my HP printer connected to a USB hub, and the hub to the Airport Express, but when I select the HP from the printer list, my MacBook says the printer is "off-line" - even when it is not.  I've tried several USB connectors, and several different ports on my USB hub; same result.  I need to have the HP connected to the hub 'cause from there it's connected to our desktop Mac.

    Hi,
I am currently replying to this as it shows in the iChat Community.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Snow Leopard  (you should not lose contact with it through any email links you get)
I also don't do Wirelss printing so I can't actaully help either.

  • Is it possible to print from Windows 8.1 to a printer connected to the USB port on an Airport Express?

Is it possible to print from Windows 8.1 to a printer connected to the USB port on an Airport Express?
    a) HP printer with USB port only (no ethernet port) connected to Airport Express
    b) No issue printing from Macs
    Tests
    1) Installed Bonjour 2 - does not find printer (now uninstalled)
    2) Bonjour 3 is listed in programs but no way to access
    3) Using TCPIP address (and no Bonjour) gives 'Unsupported Personality' error when printing test page

p.s. why are all Windows 8.1 questios n the forum 'Locked' with no reply?

This is possible, but not with Bonjour or any other fixes.  It is just a printer set up based on the Port name of the Airport, 10.0.1.1.

I have an Ipad and Iphone but I don't have an Airprint at home but only a WIFI printer, my question is if I connect the wifi printer to Airport express, can I print from Ipad and Iphone ? Please help me if anyone knows about this.

Unfortunately, connecting a non-AirPrint-enabled printer to an AirPort base station's USB port will not make it AirPrint-ready.
You will need to use another solution, like Printopia, to be able to print to this printer from an iOS device.

  • How can I print from my IPAD3 to a printer connected to Airport Express?

How can I print from my IPAD3 to a printer connected to Airport Express? I have a HP printer and I can print from all my Windows PC and iMAC in the house. How can I print from my IPaD?

    You cannot.
The USB port on the AirPort Express allow sharing a printer with Windows and Mac OS X, not with iOS:
"Wireless printing over USB requires a compatible printer and OS X v10.2.7 or later, Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7":
    http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/#wireless-printing
"AirPrint-enabled printers  connected using Bluetooth or shared through a USB port of a Mac, PC, AirPort Base Station, or Time Capsule are not supported":
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
The HP ePrint app also does not provide such functionality:
Can I print from the HP ePrint mobile app using USB or Bluetooth?
No. You can only print directly to supported HP printers on a local wireless network.

  • HP Laserjet printer connected to my Airport Express?

I have bought a HP Laserjet printer and I want to connect it to my Airport express, so I can print wireless. I have my Airport express installed and connected to my router via Ethernet cabel and I the printer is connected to the Airport station by a USB cable. But my Macbook Pro can't find the printer when I search for it? What might the problem be?
    Hope someone can help!

The problem may be that the AirPort Express does not support your printer model.  Not all printers are supported, and Apple tends to favor popular, lower priced All-in-One devices for USB support.
On your Mac....open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Print & Scan
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list
Hopefully, your printer model will appear. If it does, click on the name of the printer to highlight it, then click Add to install the printer at the location of the AirPort Express
Try to print. Be sure to select the correct location of your printer, as it may appear as a printer connected to your MacBook Pro and as a printer connected to the AirPort Express. You must choose the correct location to be able to print.
If your printer model does not appear when you click the + button in the steps above, about all that you can do is contact HP Support to see if they have an updated printer driver that you could download and install....that might allow the print function at the AirPort Express.

  • Airport Express Base Station and HP Laserjet 1020 printer connected

    Dear all,
I have a Laptop (PC) Sony Vaio PCG-Z1XSP and an Airport Express Base Station which work perfectly together (internet access and I-tunes). I recently bought a printer HP Laserjet 1020 and connected it to the Airport Express USB soket. I managed to make it work and print a couple of times, but as soon as I turn off the printer or the computer or Airport Express, the next time I want to print, it doesn't work anymore.
The Airport Admin Utility recognises the printer (I can see it listed). I have updated the Airport Express software to the Firmware version 6.3 as well as downloaded the latest driver available on HP's website for my printer. I've also substituted the USB cable. Can anybody help me here? Thank you very much and best regards.

    Hallo everybody,
Thanks for all the answers. I have contacted HP's chat online and gone through the problem with 3 different technicians. I've tried a lot myself too. The issue was partially solved by restarting the printer spooler, i.e. stop, then start and then restart it.
However after I was so happy that the printer worked, I turn off everything. When I turn on again, it was not working anymore. Then I tried to see by exclusion what the problem is, I had to restart the Hardwar I don't know how many times.
    Conclusion:
    1. The USB cable must be plugged into the airport express before turning on anything.
    2. Turn on the printer first.
    3. Turn on the airport express and the computer.
    4. If you try to print it doesn't work, even if you reset the airport express through the airport express utility software. The printer is recognized and appears in it though.
    5. Disconnect the USB cable from the airport express and connect it to the PC directly.
    6. Print a document.
    7. Disconnect the cable and reconnect it to the airport express.
    8. Now you should be able to print wireless. You may need to reset the airport expresst with the utility softwar, but I managed to print without having to do it.
    9. The pörinter works even if you turn off and on again the computer, or you suspend the windows session and restart it, or if you put it in standby and restart it.
    10. The printer works even if you turn off the airport express and the computer, or the airport express alone and restart them/it.
    11. The printer doens't work anymore if you turn it off and onn again. In such a case you have to plug in/out as discribeb above.
Solution: Leave the printer always on, or make the plug in/out every morning when you start the computer and print one page direclty before being able to print wireless.
Does anybody have a solution to this problem? I mean it prints, but it is annoying to plug in/out every day, no?
HP's technician says that it is not a recommanded solution the HP Laserjet 1020 with the airport express, since the printer works on a host based server basis... I mean it is easy to say that, but one expects to buy a printer that works always and not to have to plug in/out everyday, restart spooler and so on.
Can anybody comment or suggest anything I can do to avoid this? Thank you and I hope this helps others too.

  • Printer connected to Airport Express only works on OSX Partition, not Windows 7 Partition

I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro, 13 inch with 2.9ghz processor and 8GB RAM that has a Boot Camp partition on it running Windows 7 Professional. I have had an Airport Express base station that I purchased in 2013, and have a printer connected to it, a HP Laserjet 1102w which is plugged into the Airport. When I am on the OSX partition, the wireless printing works perfectly, however, on the Windows partition, it will not 'find' the printer under a list of available printers. This is annoying as I primarily use Windows and have to restart my computer every time I need to print something. Is there any way to fix this?

You might want to take a look at Printopia to see if it will do what you want. There is a free trial, so you will know for sure before you buy.
The upside with Printopia is that printing from the iPhone will work just as if you had an AirPrint printer.
The downside with Printopia is that you must have a Mac running on the network to be able to print.

I have an iP4500, which I assume is quite similar to your model.
I had to reset the printing system to get things printing again. Only takes a few minutes and no problems at all since I did it a week ago or so.
Plug the printer into the USB port on the Express and restart the printer.
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and then open Print and Fax
Right-Click in the printer area on the left and select Reset Printing System
Then click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list to install the printer again.

  • Can't print to hp laser jet 1020 printer connected to airport express

Hello All - I recently bought an airport extreme so I am doing some re-configuring of my home network but I am having issues getting the desired out come.
I have the airport extreme connected to the modem. From the extreme in another room, I have an airport express connected to the airport extreme wirelessly (I set that up through the airport utility without any problems.)  Now I want to connect my usb hp laser jet 1020 printer the airport express to print from.  I have a windows 7 machine.  I can see the printer connected to the airport express through the airport utility.  I have tried to use the bonjour print service to set up the print connection.  Bonjour sees the printer connected as well, I run through all the prompts and click finish, but when I go to print something, it goes to print que and nothing happens. (side note, the printer works just fine when connected directly to the computer).
So I guess my question is, it appears the computer sees that my printer is connected to the airport express. But some point along the way, when I go to print, the message gets lost or goes to the wrong place. I am on the right track?  Any other suggestions?
    Thanks.

Does "plugged into it" mean that the printer is connected using USB or Ethernet?
If USB, have you run Bonjour for Windows to find and configure the printer?  (Pages 16-17 in the Setup Guide)

  • Printer connected to AirPort Express doesn't show up on iPhone

I recently bought an AirPort Express knowing that I could be able to use my basic printer with it and print from my iDevices wirelessly even thogh it is not AirPrint enabled. The Airport Express is supposed to be a wireless link from my iDevices to my printer so I won't need to buy an expensive AirPrint modeled printer. So I've set up the AirPort Express and connected my printer to the USB port. The AirPort has recognised my printer and shows up in AirPort Utility on my PC. I go onto any one of my iDevices and when I choose the print option it says no AirPrint printers could be found. The Printer shows up in AirPort utility on my computer but it's nowhere to be found on my iDevices. Please help, someone!

I recently bought an AirPort Express knowing that I could be able to use my basic printer with it and print from my iDevices wirelessly even thogh it is not AirPrint enabled
Unfortunately, this is not correct.  You need an AirPrint compatible printer connected to your network wirelessly to be able to print directly from an iOS device.
See this Apple support document for a list of AirPrint compatible models:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
As wuzradioman mentions, you may be able to use a separate App like Printopia to allow an iOS device to print to a non-AirPrint printer. There is a free trial, so you will know in a few minutes whether or not it might work for your purposes.

  • Will Windows 7 print to a printer connected to Airport Express

I have a late 2010 Macbook Pro with Lion. Just did a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit using bootcamp. Hooked up my printer via USB directly to the MBP while in Windows and loaded printer software. Prints fine. Then removed USB cable from MBP and re-connected it to Airport Express. Windows finds and connects to my Airport Express fine. When I try to print a document, Windows does not see the printer on Airport Express. Will windows not print to a printer on Airport Express or do I need to somehow tell Windows that the printer is on Airport Express? The printer prints fine from the mac side of my computer.

    BobTheFisherman wrote:
You have to tell Windows to print to a network printer. Did you set up the network printer in Windows? How many printers do you see in Windows? If only the USB printer shows up then you did not tell Windows about the network printer.
In Windows Start > Devices and Printers > Add Printer. Make sure you select the network printer to add not a local printer.
After some more research, I found that I needed to download and run Bonjour. Which I did, and it seemed to load fine. I then went to the printer properties, port tab, and went to IP_local and selected config port. In the printer name and address box I put 10.0.1.1 (for airport extreme) and selected Apply. After this when I try to print, I actually get "printer ready" in the print dialoge box. When I select print, the doc goes to the print que and it says "printing" then disappears, but nothing prints. I have done research on THIS issue now and have found many others with the same issue, but not sure of the answer yet. Maybe I need to use Generic Postscript, but I am not sure where this is.

  • USB Printer connected to Airport Express not visible on iPad and iPhone

I have got two Airport Express devices in my network, connected by ethernet. Air Play works fine. Unfortunately my iPad and iPhone do not find the printer connected by USB. Printing from a Win PC to the printer works fine. The printer is visible in the Airport Express configuration and from Windows in the Bonjour printer search.
Printing from iPad and iPhone to printers connected to the Win PC works fine.
Does anyone know what might be wrong?

That's only true of a limited number of printer models from HP. Future updates to iOS may change that, but that's not the case yet.
On this Apple Web page http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/airprint.html
see the mention at the bottom that "AirPrint works seamlessly with a new generation of wireless printers from HP."
