Losing harddrive space

I'm reposting in the form of a question in order to try to get any suggestions, since haven't had many responses when posting to existing forums. Maybe there is no answer and I'm just hosed.
"I’m inexplicably running out of hard drive space. I have researched the internet and tried all suggestions and still find myself short several Gb of available space. To summarize:
Whatsize indicates 45G of actual “stuff” on the hardrive (which is the same thing I added up), but 63G of HD used and only 12G available on a 75G HD. I’m short almost 18G! Whatsize, OmniDiskSweeper, and Disk Inventory X apps all show about the same sizes and do not show any files that look abnormally large.
I have tried the suggestions on:
http://www.macfixitforums.com/showflat.php?Board=Forum38&Number=770243
and find nothing abnormally large in
/private/var/vm
/private/var/log
/Volumes or
/Users/user-name/.Trash (in any user)
Have been unable to find /.Trashes (have also tried /.Trash and /.Trashe, too) in the “Go to...” portion of finder. It always says “file not found.” Whatsize, Disk Inventory X, and OmniDiskSweeper do not show any abnormally large .Trash files, or any other suspicious files for that matter.
I booted off the Tiger install DVD and repaired a “minor” problem in the HFS directory before doing anything else.
I have run daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance with MacJanitor, cleaned out caches, except System cache (only 39Mb) and Crash cache (as per Onyx default) with Onyx as well as force emptied the trash in all users accounts. I have looked for large files both with Finder and with Pathfinder without any luck (including invisible files). I have reviewed and deleted Console logs.
I do not have iShock or Norton software. I deleted language files with Monolingual to get 1.6Gb of space back. I do not have any previous system folders and have already deleted OS 9.
I’m beginning to think I have a hard drive problem that disk utility cannot detect and cannot fix. Does anyone have any suggestions about what’s next??? Would one of the commercial harddrive repair utilities possibly be of any help? I’m really outta bullets now."
Would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!

Power Macintosh G4 (PCI Graphics): 10.2GB Hard Drive Issue
Western Digital Corporation announced that they are implementing a limited recall of certain Caviar hard drives to address possible long-term reliability issues. This article explains the issue, how to determine if your Power Macintosh G4 (PCI Graphics) is affected, and what steps to take if it is.
Western Digital Corporation is implementing a limited recall of certain capacities of their Caviar hard drives. Only a small number of the Power Macintosh G4 (PCI Graphics) built with the Western Digital 10.2 GB hard drive are affected. By looking at the serial number of the computer, you can determine if your system may be affected.
Here are the steps to follow to identify whether your Power Macintosh G4 (PCI Graphics) has an affected Western Digital hard drive:
Step One
Verify the computer serial number is xx938xxxxxx or xx939xxxxxx, where the x can be any letter or number. The serial number is located on the rear of the Power Macintosh G4, just below the AC receptacle.
If the serial number matches the above format, then go on to step two. If the serial number does not match, then your hard drive is not affected by this issue.
Step Two
Use Apple System Profiler to verify the model number and serial number of the Western Digital drive installed.
1. Open Apple System Profiler.
2. Select the Devices and Volumes tab.
3. In the Devices and Volumes window, click on the Hard Drive triangle that is to the right of the Internal ATA 1 line.
A small box will open containing the information regarding the installed hard drive. The information will look similar to this:
Hard drive
Driver version: 3.2.2f1
Mac OS partitions: 1
Removable media: No
Vendor: WDC
Revision number: 83.10A83
Product ID: WD102AA
Serial number: WD-WM6570248884
Unformatted size: 9.55 GB
The relevant information is the Product ID and Serial Number.
Product ID
If the Product ID is WD102AA, then look at the Serial Number. Otherwise, the drive is not affected by this issue and does not fit the recall parameters set forth by Western Digital.
Serial Number
If the Serial Number is in the range WD-WM6570248884 to WD-WM6570432919, inclusive, the drive is affected by the issue and should be replaced. Please contact your local Apple Authorized Service Provider to have the drive replaced.
If the Serial Number is not in the above range, the drive is not affected by this issue and does not fit the recall parameters set forth by Western Digital.
Note: Apple strongly recommends that you back up your hard drive before having your computer serviced. Apple is unable to retrieve data left on the hard drive once it has been replaced.

  • Losing HardDrive Space for No Reason

    Hello Everyone,
I'm in great need of help.I have a IMac G5 running Tiger that is losing HardDrive space everyday even when nothing is being loaded on the machine( almost a gig everyday)I saw on this message board where someone else had a similar problem and they suggested that they look in Finder Applications/Utilities Console and look for repeated lines in the log.Well I looked there and my log has entries every minute or so called "crashdump" .I mean for yesterday there are probably a 100 or so entries with this name (crashdump) .Is this normal ? Can I delete these ?Will that do any good? Is that even the problem?
MANY THANKS to anyone who could help,
    Tracy

Is there any software or hardware you don't know for certain if it is compatible with your currently installed system? Just because it says it is compatible with:
10.2.x and up does not mean it is compatible with 10.3, 10.4, and 10.5.
nor does it mean that it is compatible with 10.2.3 and above.
Same with any version of compatibility listing. Only if software or hardware says it is compatible with your exact OS version, can you believe it has been tested with that OS version.

  • Why am I losing harddrive space?

I am a active editor and film geek so I often am moving any where from 20 to 200G's of space at a time as well as constantly downloading things for my projects. Somewhere I must have gotten a virus because I removed over 80G's from my harddrive and since have lost those 80G's and only have a fluctuating 600MB's now. I went through the processes and checked to see if something fishy was happening there. The most processing happening is in the Chrome Helper but that doesn't appear to be the root of the problem. I never set up my Time Machine so thats not the problem either. I used disk utility and now it says it can't repair the disk but all the other verifications work fine. It has been happening pretty regularly for the past 2 weeks. I keep removing heavy items and lo and behold the free space disappears. Also not sure if its linked but since this started happening my mail stopped working. HELP!

First thing I suggest is be sure you emptied your trash after all the deleting.
I use WhatSize to check space on my drive.
Disk Inventory X is also good for this.

  • Running out of harddrive space - here's a fix.

Twice now I've run out of harddrive space on my t500 with a 160GB harddrive installed. The first time I called the IBM support people who were as useful as a chocolate teapot.
This time I turned to the Microsoft forums and finally got it figured out. I don't know if this will get to IBM's tech guys, but perhaps they may want to look into it for their build.
Vista uses an amount of the drive for Restore points and shadow copies of files. Typically this amount is limited to 15% of the drive space. On my copy of Vista, the setting was UNBOUNDED, which is why it gobbled up the entire harddrive.
In XP, this setting was controlled by a UI, in Vista, MS took a huge step forward and implemented a command-line utility to ocntrol this setting. (/sarcasm).
These are the commands to list and set the amount of storage consumed by Vista for restore points and Shadow copies.
    vssadmin List ShadowStorage
    vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /on=C: /For=C: /MaxSize=5GB
Note that I set mine to 5GB which is substantially less than the default 15% of the harddrive. If you use this, use your own discretion.
The question of course is why I received a system with this set as follows:
    C:\Users\Mike>vssadmin List ShadowStorage
vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
    (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.
    Shadow Copy Storage association
    For volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{a589e9af-cf02-19dd-bec8-001c259b5bc3}\
    Shadow Copy Storage volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{a589e9af-cf02-19dd-bec8-001c259b5b
    c3}\
Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 6.656 GB
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 9.108 GB
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: UNBOUNDED
Not that I expect IBM will 'fess up, but what the hey.
Edit: My apologies for the random smilies, I couldn't find an option to turn of interpreting some character sequences as smilies.

  • Losing disk space after upgrade of Mavericks

The download and installation was successful. However, after restarting and before upgrading all free iWork apps including iTunes and iPhoto. I noticed that after recovering about 10gb of disk space, it started reducing it again.  I continued with the upgrade of the said apps, but after leaving my mbp for a few hours it started losing disk space again. this time its agresssive, i've lost around 40gb overnight, without using any apps or activating any updates.  Please help!

It sounds like Time Machine is turned ON and the computer is making backups to the hard disk.  This space is freed automatically, if required by the OS.

  • Losing filesystem space due to file open descriptors (lsof  /opt/oracle )

    Hi,
Our oracle mounted filesystem for /opt/oracle is constantly losing filesystem space due to file open descriptors (command to give the details -->lsof /opt/oracle).
When we issue this command single excutable apperas more time with diffrent process id and consumes space,
Is it realted to bug 3208807 ? or if any other please help me
Oracle Version : 9.2.0.4 with Data Guard
    Regards
    Manoj

losing filesystem space due to file open descriptorsI think this has nothing to do with open descriptors.
    Check following:
    1. generation of trace files in bdump, cdump and udump directory (compress, move or remove *.trc files and cdmp_nnnnnn directories)
    2. generation of network trace files is enabled (sqlnet.ora)
    3. if your database files are located somewhere under /opt/oracle directory then check for autoextend datafiles
Check content of alert log and content of latest tracle files (in bdump) and if you are facing to bug 3208807 then trace files must contain error message as mentioned in 3208807.8 Note.

  • Why am I losing disc space for no apparent reason?

The past few days, I have been losing disc space and haven't been adding anything.
I was at about 10 GB free, and suddenly my computer was telling me that I had 0. I freed up 2 more GB, and a few minutes later it was down to 371 MB, then 100 MB, then 0 (within the span about 15 minutes). I repeated this process, and about the same thing happened.
I've deleted about half of my iPhoto library, a large portion of iTunes, deleted Safari caches, and most documents. I even did scans with Grand Perspective, and it only shows about 40 GB taken up. I should have at least 34 GB open, and yet somehow that is not the case.
Even in the past hour, I deleted 500 songs, and my space has gone down. HELP ME!

First thing I suggest is be sure you emptied your trash after all the deleting.
I use WhatSize to check space on my drive.

  • Something is eating up my harddrive space

Some application is eating up my harddrive space, its constantly decreasing every second, but i cant find out what the problem is. So can anybody help me diagnose the problem.
    thanks

Actually, I ended up writing an article to help people find space eating files:
    http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/TigerMisc.html
It lists the "usual suspects" then goes on to the somewhat more daunting process of using the Terminal to find and eliminate more esoteric files.

  • Losing disk space after installing Mavericks

After installing OS X Mavericks, I had noticed my computer was losing disk space after updating some products. I even shut down my computer to allow it to readjust to the updates, cleared some unnecessary apps, and yet I see my computer losing more space, as if files are being added behind the scenes. I've adjusted my browser Safari to more private settings, even cleared the cache, to avoid this, yet it still occurs. Are there other files I should be clearing?

the trouble is I don't know what is causing the disk space to be taken. I'm idly using Safari with private browsing set, when I come looking at my finder, seeing the space gradually falling. I was at 695.02 GB available this morning, and now at 694.83 GB available. I've made no downloads in between then, so I'm wondering if this is the result of downloading Mavericks directly from the app store, or if there is a setting I need to fix. I've tried verrifying/repairing the disk, permissions too, but I still see the decrease occurring.

  • Where has my harddrive space gone?

I will soon be getting a new MacBook with a solid state harddrive.  It will likely be smaller than the 500GB drive I use now, so I am calculating what size I need.  I can do without some of my own files (under "Users"), but I imagine I need everything else.  However, the math just isn't adding up.  My folders on the HD are as follows:
    apps 12.8 GB
    library 12.47 GB
    system 4.45 GB
    total non-user files = 29.72 GB
My "users" folder is 236.39 GB
grand total = 266.11 GB used.
However, under "info" after ctrl-clicking the HD, it says I am using 406.75 GB!  (unused = 58.69, capacity = 465.44.)
What am I missing?  Is this missing data hidden but essential and needing to be factored in to my new HD?

Check your hard drive space again using one of the following...
OmniDiskSweeper is a free utility that checks HD space.
FreeSpace cost $1 or is a free utility that checks HD space.
SpaceControl is a free utility that checks HD space.
FreeSpace cost $.99 -  FreeSpace shows you how much space is available on all local, connected, and network drives with a single click.

  • Harddrive space after re-install of OS

    Hey there,
As you might have seen I was previously having a problem with my dock and dashboard, which required me to re-install the OS as there was some issue with the system files. My questions is, I did an archive install as I didn't have an external harddrive (Of course I forgot about my Ipod 30 gig). Now, I have 18 fewer gigs on my system, is there any way that I can get that space back?
    Thanks,
    John

    Take a look at this;
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Your previous system folder has been archived. Once you decide everything is fine, it's fine to delete it. Give it a day or two unless you have no disk space left.
    Best of luck

  • Quicktime is eating up my harddrive space

    Hi,
I recently discovered that the space on my harddrive is shrinking. I have a partitioned drive as most do I assume and the first partition is for Windows, programs etc. Any media an so on are on other partitions. The problem sits in the first partition for programs. I have located the problem and it seems to be a folder with the following path that has more than 15 gig of QTCH files in it.
Local drive > User > AppData > Locallow > Apple Computer > Quicktime > Downloads
Following this there are a number of folders named as 00, 01, 02 so on. So I have a range of questions if anyone can be kind of enough to help. What is this? Why has it grown to this proportion? Can I delete it? Will it grow back? Does it have to do with a setup in Quicktime?
I predominantly use Quicktime watching movie trailers on apple.com. I suspect that it has to do with that since I don't use Quicktime for anything else than that.
    Thanks

If you open the QT control panel and click on the Advanced tab you'll see Download Cache. You can click on Empty Cache to remove them and yes they will grow back. You could try setting the Download Cache, Size: It can be set to 0 MB, so you might want to experiment with that. I forget what they are. I believe just a Temp file that gets created, as does in Windows C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Temp and Temporary Internet Files

  • Losing HD space when emptying trash

I've searched the discussions a bit and found several posts dealing with similar problems, but none seem to offer a real explanation or good solution.
For some time the available space on my HD seems to be disappearing, sometimes going from 3GB to 70 MB in hours. This is especially noticeable when I empty the trash sometimes, and the available space drops considerably (sometimes with 1GB or more) instead of increasing.
The available space is restored when I restart my mac, but surely I don't want to be restarting my computer all the time. It's really annoying when I work with programs like Photoshop and I can't save or modify my work because there is no space available.
I have had my mac for about four years now, and only recently started having this problem, though I'm not really doing anything different with it.
I have downloaded and run both Whatsize and TinkerToolSystem as was recommended in similar posts, but I really can't get those programs to clarify/solve my problems. When I run Whatsize there don't seem to be any 'strange' large files, for all I know it may be multiple small files causing the problem. And when I run TinkerToolSystem the thing to do as I understand it is emptying my caches, but they certainly don't amount to the space I'm losing.
A friend of mine told me he'd had the same problem, and it turned out it had something to do with deleting incomplete downloads. But he doesn't remember how he fixed it, and I can't seem to find any useful information on it myself.
So, why is this happening and what to do?
    iMac Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Two things to consider:
First, you do seem to have something running, somewhere, somehow, that is filling-up your disk. Do you have FileVault on? If so, turn it off, at least for a while. It's probably not the cause, but may be making it worse. Is your firewall on? If not, turn it on for the same reason. Are you using Raid? I don't know about it's implementation on Macs, but on some other hardware if you're having disk problems, raid will magnify them also.
I'd also check the logs. It's a bit of a long shot, but there might be a clue there.
Are you doing routine maintenance? Again, there's probably nothing there causing your problem, but it can't hurt. If not, here's a link to page 1 of a very good guide: http://www.macworld.com/2005/01/features/preventmacdisasters/index.php
Second: the loss of space when emptying the trash may not be what's actually happening. While working with fairly large video files, I've come to the conclusion that a Finder window's "available" space figure is not necessarily updated when new files are created or added-to (as when importing video). But it does get re-calculated when you delete something. So if some hidden process makes, say, 2 gb of files, you won't see that on the Finder window. Then you delete a 1gb file, Finder updates, and it appears that you lost 1gb right then.

  • Something eating my harddrive space?

    Hello,
Over the past few weeks I've found I am increasingly receiving the message 'your harddrive is almost full'. I make space by deleting some things, or moving stuff to an external harddrive but within a couple of hours I get the message again. It seems like something is slowly eating up the space.
I did a quick search online and someone suggested rebooting which I did and indeed some of the space came back (normally up to 1GB) but then within an hour it had gone again. It's infuriating! I can't think where all the space has gone in the first place. I don't have time to go to an apple store anytime soon but I have so much work to get done over Christmas and it's almost impossible with having to reboot 4 or 5 times a day. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be eternally grateful!
Oh, and I am a not great with computers so if possible, bare that in mind!
    Many thanks
