Losing Internet Connection/Signal

Hello,
I have the Airport Extreme 802.11 base station and it's worked well for two years. About two weeks ago, I started losing the signal and having network timeout connections. I talked with the ISP (Virgin Media) and the signal is coming into the house fine. Is it possible that the base station is failing? The Airport Utility is 5.4.1 (not sure what the firmware is as I can't find it). If it is likely to be the firmware problem, how do I revert back to 7.3?
Thanks.
lsb

Same here. I have an AEBS (802.11n GigE) running in 5ghz n-only which worked beautifully until I installed that latest 7.4.1 firmware. I've also got an Airport Express on "extend network" but without "allow wireless clients" enabled. Mainly to extend the network to some ethernet devices in another room. I had very bad throughput with the 7.4.1 firmware in this setup. -- In this situation, the remote ethernet devices (connected to the airport express's ethernet) would get <1ms pings for 3-4 seconds, then a >1000ms ping, via mtr. Over and over again. Reverting both devices to 7.3.2 resolved these issues instantly. Go figure.
On the other hand, at work I have the same 802.11n GigE airport extreme on n-only and pretty easily get 10-15MB/sec out of it regularly on the 7.4.1 firmware. Go figure. Hope someone knows the answer to this.

Running 10.6.8 on Intel dual core iMac, it keeps on losing internet connection. Webpages get stuck after a minute or so. If I check the internet connection via diagnostics it seems to work just fine. Others, like the iPad use the same wifi connection and never fail. What can I do?

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Why is my macbook pro running so slow and losing internet connection?

Why is my Macbook Pro downloading so slowly and losing internet connection frequently?

Write off the MS stuff as indicators for now--starting with Office 2008, they developed very long launch times. The time to launch 2008 on my old 1.25Ghz G4 and my MBP 2.2G are virtually the same. Even document opens/saves are slow compared to Office 2004 and earlier.
    1) You have adequate hard drive space so that eliminates one of the usual suspects.
    2) Check for runaway background processes. Quit all running user applications so the computer is at normal idle. Find Activity Monitor in Applications > Utilities and launch it. If you've not run it before, change the "Show" pulldown at the top of the AM window from its default of "User Processes" to "All Processes." There is a column for "%CPU." Click that column header to sort by CPU usage. Watch the processes "bubble" for about a minute to get a better picture of the usage.
If any process is using more than about 25 percent of the CPU cycles while the computer is idling, post the names of the processes and we can see if they can be eliminated. My MBP shows nothing using more that about 5 percent on any given test run as long as I close all my user apps.
    3) If you have never done any sort of maintenance procedures, taht can slow you down. Simply restarting the computer a few times a week clear a lot of temporary files. You also may wish to review this article on the Mac OSX periodic maintenance scripts, which, if run, also do a lot of cleanup:
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
There are other useful articles on file maintenance associated with the one. Here's the index:
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html
Check out articles with "Maintain" and "Tuning" in the titles.
    4) Use Disk Utility to check the SMART Status of your hard drive. A failing drive can make things slow before it makes things stop.

  • Airport time capsule losing Internet connection?

My airport time capsule is losing Internet connection but I still have wifi? Any suggestions?

It could be your modem, or other problem on the ISP's end. Try resetting your modem - power it down and let it rest for a few minutes, then power it back up again.
If it is a cable modem, also disconnect its coaxial cable - literally unscrew it and leave it detached while the modem is powered down.
Leave the TC powered up during that time.
After a sufficient amount of time has elapsed reconnect the cable and power up the cable modem. If you're still having trouble contact your ISP.
The possibility of a TC problem exists but the sort of failure you describe is not common. If all else fails perform a "hard reset" followed by reconfiguring the TC. Your Time Machine backups will not be affected.

  • My MacBook Air which is only 3 months old, keeps on losing internet connection.  To reconnect I have to click on the internet icon on the top bar and click turn wi-fi off.  I then have to click turn wi-fi on and it reconnects after a few seconds.

My MacBook Air which is only just over 3 months old, keeps on losing internet connection.. To resolve it I have to click on the internet icon at the top of the page and then click turn wi-fi off.  I then click turn wi-fi on and it reconnects.  This resolves it for a while, and then it disconnects and I have to go through the same procedure again.  My BT Home hub is fine because my wife's i pad and our phones are all ok.  What can the problem be?

  • WRT160N losing internet connection

    Hello,
I have a router WRT160N and is randomly losing internet connection. I should reset at every 5-50 seconds but is unlikely to do this. I prefer to insert the internet in network card, instead reset it every minute.
I've reset the router, I've restore it to factory settings with no result.
Internet is OK, cable is OK, MTU is OK, routing table is OK. What isn't OK?

Click here and select the correct version of your router, download the firmware and upgrade it...It should help you get a stable connection...Change the MTU to 1400...

  • Do they have plans to fix the bugs with Yosemite.  I keep losing internet connection on my Mac Book

Ever since i installed Yosemite on my Mac Book pro i keep losing internet connection.  Should I go back to mavericks because I just hate this Yosemite or do they plan to fix the bugs soon?  I did a complete clean install and I am still having problems.  I see a lot of complicated solutions and I am not that tech savvy to go into my settings.  Thanks

All software has bugs. The first release (which you have) will be the worst.
Many advocate not upgrading to a new operating system until it's been out for 3 months or longer. In the Windows world many recommend not upgrading until a full year has passed.
So yes, most / some bugs and glitches will get fixed over time.   If you wish to reduce your difficulties in the future wait a while before installing ANY new OS.
I suggest you post specific details on your Internet problems. How are you connected etc.

  • ***Time Capsule intermittently losing internet connection***

    Hello, Here's the story:
My Time Capsule intermittently is losing internet connection. The light is green for 5-10 minutes at a time, then turns amber for 2 minutes and loses internet connection.
At first,..I thought it was the TC going bad. Went to my local Apple store and had it replaced under warranty.
Still,, the same situation was happening.
Then talked to AT&T (DSL) and they checked the connection. They deemed it was OK and possibly the modem going bad.
Went to Best Buy and purchased a new modem. Installed, put into Bridge Mode,...interenet working OK.
Still,...the same situation that it stays on for 5-10 minutes, then loses it for 2 minutes.
Any ideas? Could it still be the ISP (AT&T)?
Last thought,...my neighbor uses Uverse (AT&T) for his cable/ISP and he is expierincing cable/ISP outages ramdomly. I am using DSL (AT&T) too but through my phone line. Are the two possibly related?

You need to run the modem in router mode..
I would either bridge the TC or remove it completely because you need to get exact log info from the modem.
Do isolation test.. ie remove all phones and filters and other devices from your phone line. Reboot the modem.. and wait for restart to complete.
Copy out of the modem the full line stats, sync info and even better if you can get cli access and do some deeper level stuff.. (most of the tools I use are PC only.. ie dmt tools).
Then make sure the log is turned on and giving max info and watch your connection.. if it drops without anything happening on the modem,, then the ISP is having issues.. which is possible although connection of cable and adsl is loose or non-existent.
If it drops sync keep track of how often and the line stats, Particularly the SNR..
See if you have an rf noise source in the house.. more if you are interested.

    Hi Guys

I really hope someone can help me out here.
I do not want to go back to my good old Linksys...

I have a similar problem with a new TC 2TB unit. I have ATT ADSL service using a Speedstream modem. PPPoE is setup on the TC and it works and connects. All features of the TC are working (wi-fi, Back to My Mac, Time Machine, etc...) and the light is solid green on the TC.
Periodically, the LED blinks amber and I've lost Internet access. The Speedstream modem shows all green lights. I have found that power cycling the Speedstream modem brings the TC back to solid green after about 2 minutes.
I am seeing this happen about once a day and it can happen overnight when there is no network activity. I am thinking that the lease on the IP address given by ATT expires and the TC does not know enough to reinitiate a connection. I have set the PPPoE Connection to Always On and experienced the problem. I have also tried setting the Connection to Automatic and set the Disconnect if Idle setting to Never.

  • Losing internet connection randomly (wlan stays connected) - wicd

Since about a week now I'm running into endless problems with my wlan connection - before that, all worked well (I didn't changed any hardware)
I'm losing my internet connection in random intervals and I can't track down the reason for this problem. I've a dual-boot setup with win7 on it and there I have constant connection so this can't be any hardware problem.
I am using wicd to manage my wlan (wicd-kde, wicd-curses).
always used dhcp and never made any problems -even tried with static IP now which unfortunately didn't help.
One thing to mention - even if I'm connected, the connection seems very slow, compared to the laptop I'm on (in the same network).
    now some console output:
    lspci | grep -i net

    thanks in advance

    Thanks for you answer!
Actually, I tried it with dhclient too and it didn't helped at all.
I switched to netcfg(2) now and it seems working  - wicd is completely removed from my system - hopefully it will stay like this now.
the only problem for now is that my connection seems quite slow - any ideas where/how I can track down possible issues?
still I've no idea what was/is causing those problems since in win7 all works well..

  • IPod 4 freezing, losing internet connection. Is there any way to fix this?

My iPod 4 is only six months old, but hasn't been working well recently. Some apps have been saying i dont have internet connection, when i have all 3 signal bars. Then today, it froze up.
I restarted it with the Home and Sleep buttons, and then it froze on the screen with only the Apple sign while starting up. I kept trying, and after restasrting it twice while plugged into my computer it started working again.

  • Sorry to ask a popular question but....I keep losing internet connection...

    Afternoon,
I recently bought an iMac (about a month ago) - I am quite new to the Mac world and have posted a couple of questions previously. I am using Mac OS X version 10.7.2 - 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 (although I'm sure you can see that from here?)
I have noticed that I lose internet connection frequently which hasn't particurly impressed me as I then browse Safari on my iphone without issues. I use Virgin broadband (20mb) although no one ever gets that much I know! ;-)
I am also on a wireless connection - yes I could plug an ethernet cable in but why should I be needing to? I'm a little annoyed as I've spent a lot of money on this computer which I do love dearly, however, I do understand that nothing is perfect and on the mega annoying side, my friends keep slating me saying "See? Told you Macs are crap...blah blah..."
This never happened when I did have a PC so why does this seem to happen with Macs?
The reason I bought a Mac was purely because it is a lovely machine, it is pretty and I did actually think that I'd be having pretty much null problems with one. I also am a bit of a photographer and the screen on this Mac is amazing and pretty awesome for editing my photos. My old Gateway laptop died of BIOS death and lasted a record breaking 6 years. Prior to that, I had another laptop which was crap and died after two years, then a PC before then which was unspeakably awful. Many friends of mine have macs that have been with them for 10 years minimum, this was why I decided to buy one, for longevity purposes!
Anyway, I am sorry to ramble on but, is there something that I can do about this persistent interruption of internet? Can I do something to configure my settings?
Would really appreciate thoughts, views and some help of course. ;-)
    Thanks very much

Sometimes it's an interference issue related to all the items that use 2.4Ghz frequency.
    Quote from attached article:
If you experience less-than-optimal performance on your wireless network due to interference from other wireless devices, you may be able to reduce the effect of interference by changing to a different channel on your wireless network. Less-than-optimal performance may be characterized by low signal strength in the AirPort menu bar, slow connection to the Internet, or slow file transfers between wireless computers. Simply reset the AirPort base station and it will attempt to use the 2.4 and 5GHz channels with the least interference when it starts up.

Also in your router, use WPA2 security.  WEP doesn't work well with new Macs.

  • Keep losing internet connection

I keep losing my wireless internet connection even though my wireless network connection says it's workinig. Today I can't access the website for 192.168.1.1 to try to fix it. any help?

  • Losing Internet Connections

I switched from a Linksys wired router to the Airport Extreme wireless and did not experience any problems until recently. For the past couple of weeks I occasionally lose connection to the internet. The 4 lights on my cable modem that are suppose to stay lit sometimes flashes. Computers that are connected to the AE includes an iMAC running Snow Leopard, a Windows Vista machine, and 2 XP machines (through a Linkysy hub). The problem happens regardless of which machine I use (ethernet cable). When I called my cable company they claim everything is fine on their end and suggested I get a new modem.
Before spending $75.00 for a new modem, which might not fix the problem, I decided to re-boot the cable modem and attach it my original Linksys router and hub, and it seems to be working fine. I've been using the original configuration for about an hour without losing the connection (i.e., all of the lights on the modem that are suppose to be on are on).
Are there settings within AE that I need to change to address this issue?

I've been having the same problem ever since I updated my software. I only have access to dial-up which makes downloading anything a pain in the ##%! In the past I have been patient, but now I get a message indicating that I have to chose to stay connected. Can't say how often it occurs, but it is at least less than an hour. I cannot sit at my computer while a file, that is going to take 4 hours is downloading, however if I don't I am disconnected and would have to start the download all over again. I have looked at all possible preferences to see if there is somewhere to resolve the problem, but to no avail. There has to be a way to get rid of this annoyance. Please help!
