Losing internet connection with wireless

This is a problem that we had for quite a while and was hoping that it wioukld disappear with Mountain Lion but it still persists. We lose intent connectivity fairly often although it shows that i'm connected to my wireless. I need to turn off wifi then turn it back on to rreconnect, any help would be greatly appreciated. I know I'm not alone with this problem
thks

I've had this problem for months and finally called Apple support and paid the one time support fee to get a solution.  I purchased a 21.5" iMac in the summer of 2011 and am currently running OS X 10.7.3.  After confirming all my wifi settings were correct (already suspected this, since every other wireless device in the house works great), the Apple support tech recommended changing channels on my router from "Enable Auto Channel Scan" to one channel out of the 11 available.  I currently have a D-Link DIR-655 router, but the tech said the same structure exists on all wireless routers.  In other words, my situation would not improve if I bought an Apple router (Airport Extreme, Time Capsule, etc).  I logged into my router (here are common IP addresses for routers...  http://compnetworking.about.com/od/workingwithipaddresses/f/getrouteripaddr.htm , and made the channel preference change (in my case, unchecked "enable auto channel scan" and changed from channel 6 to channel 5).  It's been a few days since applying this change and so far, I haven't lost my connectivity. Even though I live in a residential subdivision (not an apartment / condo), my iMac is detecting up to 21 other local networks and this was causing interference (some of my neighbors using the same channel).   Sure enough, when I check the channels of nearby networks, I find many are using channel 6 and no one is using channel 5.  To find out what nearby network channels are being used, go to Apple icon in top left, "about this Mac", "more info", "system report", under network choose "wifi", scroll down and see other wifi network info.  Changing the router channel from auto enable to a specific channel has improved both my internet connectivity and speed (not sharing same channel with neighbors).  Hope this helps!

  • Consistently losing internet connectivity with AE and Time Warner

I am trying to help a friend fix a long-standing issue with her wireless network.
    1. Her ISP is Time Warner - she has a cable modem.
    2. She has an Airport Express plugged into it.
    3. She has several Macs, a PC, and 2 iPhone connected wirelessly.
    4. She tells me that several times a week she loses connectivity. My friend fixes it by recycling both the AE and TW cable modem.
    5. Apple replaced the AE even though they didn't think anything was wrong with it. The problem persisted. Her boyfriend tried two other WAPs, the problem persisted.
    6. Her boyfriend thinks that on a few occasions the wireless network still was up, but they were not getting internet through it.
    7. She has had TW out multiple times and they say everything is fine on their end. They said they may have MAC addresses that are "too close together" and my friend should turn on MAC filtering. This makes no sense to me - MAC filtering is for security.
Her boyfriend is going to plug his computer directly into the TW cable modem the next time they lose wireless internet connectivity, but I said I would go over and take a look.
I think the best idea is just rebuild their wireless network (I have "Take Control of Your 802.11 Wireless Network" - great book) and see if that helps. But I would appreciate any troubleshooting assistance.

    Welcome to the discussions!

Unfortunately, you'll need to resign yourself to the fact that there will be little if any real assistance from the cable company. The stuff about MAC addresses being too close together, etc is total nonsense. As you point out, MAC Filtering would have no application here either.

These are clear symptoms that interference of some type is affecting performance on the network. The first thing to do to help improve things is move the Express from it's probable current location down low on the wall behind the cabinet out to an open area where it can radiate its signal as freely as possible. This means using an AC extension cord to place the Express in a better position.
The next thing to do is make sure that the Express is not located near any other electrical devices, cordless phones, televisions, etc. These can all interfere with the wireless signal.
These actions may solve the issue. If not, you'll need to start experimenting with different channels for the wireless network on the Express as other nearby wireless networks may be using the same channel or a close adjacent channel. Start at Channel 11 and start working down until you find a more reliable channel, or run out of channels.

Not really a good idea unless he knows how to fully reset the modem before he connects it to his computer and then do the same again when connecting back to the AirPort Express. I'm not sure what he hopes to gain by doing this.

  • Hard wired PC losing internet connection with WRT160N V2 Router

I'm new to routers and I just added a WRT160N (V2) router.  The wireless connection through my laptop is great. However, I have 1 PC physically connected to the router. The internet connection is sporadic on this PC. I have high speed "wireless" internet service and sometimes you click on the internet or check e-mail and there is no internet connection. It seems to be after the PC has sat idle for a while. When you click the internet, the PC icon on the router does not even blink - its like the PC and router are not talking. If it does connect, the connection is great. Any help would be appreciated!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There is a known issue with intermittent connectivity and the Build 11 firmware for the WRT160N V2. Build 11 is the current firmware on the Linksys site. Check to see if you have Build 11 if your router is a V2.
Downgrading to Build 8 is generally accepted to correct these issues, however Linksys have indicated to several people they do not have the build 8 firmware to give to end users.
This is ONLY for WRT160N V2 routers. This firware will not work on WRT160N V1.
You can find it at http://audipages.com/router/

  • Losing internet connection over wireless

    Hi
I got my iMac last Friday and since then I have been having two very annoying wireless bugs.
    1. My Mac does not connect to my wireless network automatically on start-up.
    2. I will be surfing away happily when I will suddenly loss all internet access, I’m still connected to my wireless network I still have a decent 5 or 6 bar connection but I just can access the internet. It generally comes back after 30 to 40 seconds but twice I have had to restart to get the connection back.
Does anyone have any advice on this.
I’m with Eircom broadband and use a netopia wireless router with WEP security. I could really use some help.

    sure

I am experiencing wireless connection problem on 4s after ios 8.1 upgrade. The wireless icon appears showing that it's connected but webpages do not load. I have checked my internet connection with other devices and seems to be alright. what to do?
I have tried reseting the network settings and forgetting my wireless connection and re-connecting to it. I even backed up my phone on itunes and restored it, factory reseted it. Nothing seems to work.
Also after my upgrade to ios 8.1 my personal hotspot option under cellular data has disappeared.
Would you please help me out? I would really appreciate it.

    Hi..
Restart your router then restart the iPhone to test.

  • Unable to use Internet Connect with my new wireless device

I just received a new wireless device for my macbook pro. Normally I sign on with Internet Connect, but after setting up the new card, I can only connect using Verizon Manager, which usually doesn't give me good connection, I don't know why.
I called the Verizon people, they mostly are clueless as to how I was able to sign on using both Internet Connect and Verizon Manager before with my old card. I remember there's a way of setting up manually if you want to use Internet Connect. Problem is, when I went to Systems Preferences and clicked on Network, a pop up prompt saying "your network setting have been changed by another application" keeps popping up even as I keep closing it. ***?!!! How can I get rid of it so I can change network setting manually?
I just want the option of connecting with Internet Connect with my new wireless device. BTW, when I try connecting with it using my old setting National access/ Broadband access , I get a message saying "the selected communication device does not exist".

"I just received a new wireless device"
If not from Verizon, then who? Did it come w/a manual? If not, have you contacted the vendor/manufacturer for instructions?

  • Do they have plans to fix the bugs with Yosemite.  I keep losing internet connection on my Mac Book

Ever since i installed Yosemite on my Mac Book pro i keep losing internet connection.  Should I go back to mavericks because I just hate this Yosemite or do they plan to fix the bugs soon?  I did a complete clean install and I am still having problems.  I see a lot of complicated solutions and I am not that tech savvy to go into my settings.  Thanks

All software has bugs. The first release (which you have) will be the worst.
Many advocate not upgrading to a new operating system until it's been out for 3 months or longer. In the Windows world many recommend not upgrading until a full year has passed.
So yes, most / some bugs and glitches will get fixed over time.   If you wish to reduce your difficulties in the future wait a while before installing ANY new OS.
I suggest you post specific details on your Internet problems. How are you connected etc.

    Hi Guys
I replaced my Linksys router with an Airport Extreme 4th Gen about 2 weeks ago
I keep on losing Internet Connection when connected through a Wireless connection. This happens with my Windows 7 PC's, with my iPhone4 and with my iPad2. The connection with the AE is kept alive but the passthrough to the Internet does not work anymore. I have to reset my wireless adapter to reconnect and rebuild my internet connection.

I do not want to go back to my good old Linksys...

I have a similar problem with a new TC 2TB unit. I have ATT ADSL service using a Speedstream modem. PPPoE is setup on the TC and it works and connects. All features of the TC are working (wi-fi, Back to My Mac, Time Machine, etc...) and the light is solid green on the TC.
Periodically, the LED blinks amber and I've lost Internet access. The Speedstream modem shows all green lights. I have found that power cycling the Speedstream modem brings the TC back to solid green after about 2 minutes.
I am seeing this happen about once a day and it can happen overnight when there is no network activity. I am thinking that the lease on the IP address given by ATT expires and the TC does not know enough to reinitiate a connection. I have set the PPPoE Connection to Always On and experienced the problem. I have also tried setting the Connection to Automatic and set the Disconnect if Idle setting to Never.

  • Randomly losing network connection over wireless

Shortly after installing the 10.4.5 software update, my G4 iBook with built-in Airport Extreme card has been losing connection with increasing frequency. Built-in Ethernet use is unaffected. I'm calling this problem thrash-and-drop.
    1. When it's losing signal, processor activity goes through the roof. I had Activity Monitor running during a thrash-and-drop. kernel_task CPU consumption goes from under 1% before the event, to over 80% during the thrashing, and back under 1% after the thrashing stops. The activity is so bad the cursor can't be controlled: using the track pad sends the pointer all over the screen or nowhere at all.
    2. This has been observed to occur with two different wireless base stations: A Linksys WRT54G and an older SMC 802.11b router. Either router is within 10 feet of the computer. Only one is running at a time. There are no other base stations in range.
    3. Another iBook G4 (OS 10.3, Airport Extreme card (not built-in)), sitting next to it, shows no change and its wireless behavior is unaffected.
Initially, this seemed more likely to happen when Safari was loading Flash-heavy pages. And after thrashing and dropping a connection, it was able to reconnect after either a reboot or a five minute sleep. Currently, it can't connect to a base station for more than a minute. Most recently, it thrashed and dropped while I was selecting the base station to use. This is true regardless of the application running. In fact, it will thrash-and-drop when there are no user applications running at all, after a fresh reboot.
I've tried the following things to address the problem. None have affected the thrash-and-drop problem. Admittedly, most of this is random:
    1. Back up and delete network preferences in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    2. Turn off IPv6 in System Preferences/Network
    3. Back up and delete network preferences in ~/Library/Preferences (com.apple.NetInfoManager.plist and com.apple.NetworkUtility.plist)
Has anybody else seen this problem? I want to blame it on the 10.4.5 upgrade but I haven't seen anybody else complaining about 10.4.5 doing this to them. If there's something I can do to fix this in a software setting, I'd much prefer that to yet another roadtrip to the Apple store.
    1.33 GHz G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi!
I have the same problem of randomly losing network connection over wireless, though mine is hardly related to surfing.
I have an external storage drive in which I use for backup of my stuff, and I access the drive via my modem, using the airport. Of late, I noticed that when copying files from my iBook to the external drive, the connection would suddenly drop before the transfer is completed. This began to occur with increasing frequency, particularly when transferring large files.
I have since abandoned wireless connection, and reverted to my trusty cable. Still, I admit that I'm really curious about the cause of the apparent lack of reliability with my wireless connection. Has it something to do with the airport?

  • Using time capsule to share internet connection with a pc via ethernet

    Hi,
I've recently acquired a time capsule and was wondering if i could use it to share a wireless internet connection via ethernet to my non-wireless (windows 7) pc?
My current situation is that i have a wireless modem/router that shares my internet connection wirelessly with my mac mini.
I have a pc without a wireless card that i want to connect to the wireless network so i was wondering if it was possible to attach the pc and the time capsule with an ethernet cable, then connect the time capsule to the wireless network and share the internet connection with the pc.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible, and if so how?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the discussion area!
IF...your wireless network is now being created by another Apple "n" router like an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express or Time Capsule, it would be possible to do what you want to do.
But the Time Capsule would not be compatible for what you want if your wireless is created by another manufacturer's router. The Time Capsule could "join" this wireless network so that backups would occur over wireless. However, when the Time Capsule is configured this way, the ethernet ports on the device are not active, so this would not help with the ethernet connection that your computer needs.
A new AirPort Express 802.11n would do what you want. It has the capability of joining virtually any wireless network and the ethernet port can be enabled using the ProxySTA feature, so it would work for your purpose.

  • Sharing internet connection with a PC

Hi, I have a macbook with the latest OS X. I want to know if it is possible to share my PC's internet connection with my laptop, either through wifi, bluetooth, or firewire. I am running XP on the PC. I will not have a wireless network up, and I would like to have internet on both my mac and my pc. Is there a device that i can hook into my PC to broadcast a wifi network. It doesnt have to have a large range, I'll be using my laptop close to my desktop.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Really cool feature alert. Under System Preferences-->Sharing you can have your Mac share to any computer connected via Wi-fi, Firewire, or Ethernet. Whichever adapters are not used for the Internet connection are available.
It saved me lots of grief setting up some stubborn Windows boxen that only loaded the firewire driver as the OS was setup.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.
