Losing IPv6 default route iOS 8.1

Hi,
I have a problem with my iPhone 5C losing the IPv6 default route intermittently during the day since the upgrade to iOS 8.x.x.
Today I got a very close timestamp to when the default route was lost:
Oct 28 20:16:37 iPhone com.apple.WebKit.Networking[212] <Error>: tcp_connection_destination_prepare_complete 470 connectx to 2001:41d0:8:e8ad::1.80@0 failed: No route to host
I was visiting http://ipv6-test.com/ and all tests verified OK, a few seconds later I followed the link to their speedtest: http://ipv6-test.com/speedtest/
"Safari cannot open the page because it could not connect to the server"
As of writing this post one hour later iOS has not repaired the condition:
Oct 28 21:16:54 iPhone com.apple.WebKit.Networking[585] <Error>: tcp_connection_destination_prepare_complete 23 connectx to 2001:4810::110.80@0 failed: No route to host
This iPhone 5C still has this problem when restored to the default factory settings under iOS 8.1 via iTunes.
Only the default route is lost, not the link, prefix or the routed IPv6 address.
All other devices (yes, other iOS 8.1 devices) on my network do not have any problem with losing the default route.
Any thoughts on these logs?

iOS 8.1.2 fixed this problem on my iPhone 5C. I have not had any issues with the default route since the update.
But yes, toggling Wi-Fi always fixed the problem when I had it. I guess there was some specific Wi-Fi driver issue on iPhone 5C that made iOS unaware of the Router Advertisements and when the lifetime hit zero the default route was deleted.

  • Losing IPv6 default route

    Hi,
    I've started seeing a problem after upgrading to Yosemite that I lose the IPv6 default route after a while on my MacBook Air. I can restore it but running
    sudo ipconfig set en0 automatic-v6
    in the terminal, but after a while it disappears again. I still have all the IPs and link level routes, just not the default one. Does anyone recognize this problem or know of a workaround? I suppose it could be something with my network setup, but I've never had problems with this before and haven't changed anything except OS version recently. My router is running OpenWRT (barrier breaker pre-release).
    Nothing really relevant in syslog around that time:

    This is very annoying since I rely on IPv6 for some of my work connections, so I really do need some kind of fix.

    Try running 'nettop -m route' in a terminal window and look for the default IPv6 routes. These are mine for ethernet and wi-fi:
        default -> en0 -> fe80::200:ff:fe00:0%en0
        default -> en1 -> fe80::200:ff:fe00:0%en1
    The problem I see is that the default route keeps disappearing for a short time. If you are also running a ping6 at the time you will see:
        ping6: sendmsg: No route to host
    I'm using a Cisco RV220W router. Each network interface default route drops for a short time and there is no particular timing or other indicator why. This is all happening while the IPv4 network is rock solid. I'm seeing this in Mac OS X 10.9.5.

  • IPv6 default route

    Hi,
    I had border router, ipv6 BGP peering to upstream ISP and it learned about 5K of IPv6 BGP routes.
    Internally I had another router iBGP peering with border router. But I do not want this internal router learned full ipv6 routes.
    I would like it learn ipv6 route from 1st level upstream only and default route.
    Question is what is IPv6 default route to internet ? for ipv4 it is 0.0.0.0/0
    It is ::/0 ? or 2001::/23
    Regards

    The IPv6 equivalent to IPv4's 0.0.0.0/0 is ::/0
    So, answering to your question: default route for IPv6 is ::/0
    Cheers, Gustavo

  • Ipv6 Default route bgp

    Hi,
    I am reciving a default route on bgp over ipv6 by my service provider. I want to control to only recive the default route, but when I ask for full table I recived all the routes, I don't know how to control the prefix to only recived the default route, this is what I have (ios XR):
    prefix-set IPv6
      ::/0 le 128
    end-set
    route-policy PERMIT_IPv6
      if destination in IPv6 then
        pass
      endif
    end-policy
    router bgp 279xx
    vrf INTERNET
    neighbor 2800:xxxx:x:x:x:x:x:x
    remote-as 523xx
    description eBGP GlobeNetIPV6
    update-source Bundle-Ether4.663
    address-family ipv6 unicast
    route-policy PERMIT_IPv6 in
    route-policy IPV6_OUT out
    Sorry for my english.

    pdriver answer is the right one, you are allowing all routes
    prefix-set IPv6
      ::/0 le 128
    end-set
    it allows :: from mask 0 to mask 128, just remove the "le 128"

  • Problem in configuring IPv6 interface with default  Router lifetime.

    I'm facing Problem in configuring IPv6 interface with default
    Router lifetime through a router advertisement.
    I'm also see an unusual behavior that even after configuring accept_rtadv=0,
    the ipv6 address is configured.
    Please help in out .

    Mac OS 9 does not support IPv6. While you can have IPv6 on your network, a Macintosh running Mac OS 9.2.2 or earlier cannot make connections to services using this network protocol.
    To use IPv6 on a Macintosh, you need Mac OS X 10.1 or later (as far as I know).

  • Stopping ISIS ipv6 (Multi Topology) Default Route

    Dear Team
    I am facing the following issue, not sure has it been worked out before.
    We can stop Default Route on ISIS IPv6 Level-1 routers from nearest L1/L2 Routers, through set-attached-bit , when ISIS Ipv6 is deployed in Single  Topology, with set attached bit default route is removed both ISIS Ipv4 & Ipv6 routing tables.
    however
    it does not work when ISIS IPv6 is deployed in Multi-Topology. I Applied to control it through Ipv6 prefix-list, but is not beneficial, as level-1 routers are still receiving the default route.
    router isis
    address-family ipv6
    redistribute isis level-2 into level-1 distribute-list st
    where distribute-list  "st " specifically denies the default route and allow others.
    ipv6 prefix-list st seq 1 deny ::/0   (Default Route)
    ipv6 prefix-list st seq 2 permit 2002:19:19::1/128
    ipv6 prefix-list st seq 3 permit 2002:19:19::2/128
    How we can stop a default route on ISIS IPv6 Level-1 Routers injected from nearest L1/L2 Routers.
    Any Help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ahad

    Hi ,
    What I found is "
    If there are parallel adjacencies to the same neighbor (on different interfaces) normal
    IS-IS behavior is to suppress the advertisement of the additional adjacencies unless TE is
    enabled. This redundant information is not needed in order to correctly run SPF.
    Indication that the adjacency has been suppressed.
    This should not be a cause of concern as it has no operational impact.
     there is an Internal BUG for the same :
    IS-IS Advertises Parallel Adjacencies when TE is NOT enabled

    Thanks-

  • Can the lifetime of default route (in RA) to the client be renewed?

    The question is that why the "lifetime" for the "ipv6 nd ra" is set maximum 1800sec? It equals to just 30mins.
    If this timer is expired, how to renew the RA to the client? If the renewal is not possible, the client will loss the default
    route information forever. What is the solution for client not loss the default route (except the manual configuration)?
    Thank you

    Hi,
    It's not really a lifetime at such. A non zero value means this router can be considered as a default-gateway.
    From RFC 4861:
    Router Lifetime
                         16-bit unsigned integer.  The lifetime associated
                         with the default router in units of seconds.  The
                         field can contain values up to 65535 and receivers
                         should handle any value, while the sending rules in
                         Section 6 limit the lifetime to 9000 seconds.  A
                         Lifetime of 0 indicates that the router is not a
                         default router and SHOULD NOT appear on the default
                         router list.  The Router Lifetime applies only to
                         the router's usefulness as a default router; it
                         does not apply to information contained in other
                         message fields or options.  Options that need time
                         limits for their information include their own
                         lifetime fields.

  • Default Router

    In our node we have two routers,who will be the default gateway for the computers.

    Hi,
    by default, it will use the first router that it learned of as it’s default router for sending traffic to off-link destinations if both routers are sending RAs.You can choose the router  by configuring the default router preference on the routers.

  • Metrics when redistributing a static default route into EIGRP?

    I saw a network working with EIGRP and resdistributing a static default route into it. I did not find the "default metrics" to redistribute into EIGRP but the static default route works and is redistributed. My understanding was that everytime you redistribute into EIGRP you needed to specify the metrics. How come this network is working? Can someone explain or point to a cisco document what explains it?
    Sample of the config:
    router eigrp 1
    redistribute static
    no autosummary
    network Y.Y.Y.Y
    ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 X.X.X.X
    Thank you,

    It's just one of those specific things about EIGRP and IOS, maybe a design choice. If they do use the interface as the seed metric then that would help explain why it's that way.
    Weirdly if you are using EIGRP VRF address family configuration on IOS and you redistribute statics you do need a metric.
    And I believe NXOS running on Nexus switches also needs a metric defined.
    Just one of those things you have to remember but it would be good if it was consistent.

  • Management to VRF Interface on 1841 relying on default route

    I couldn't find this in any of the bug lists, has anyone come across this scenario before:
    I have an 1841 router, running: c1841-advipservicesk9-mz.124-25f
    This router has multiple loopbacks in different VRFs, loopback 0 is in the global context, loopback 1 is in the "ADMIN" VRF (there are multiple other VRFs, but there is nothing special or unique in the config between them, so I'll just stick with loop1, the behaviour is the same for all VRFs)
    The routing table contains an all-zeros route:
    show ip route vrf ADMIN
    Routing Table: ADMIN
    Codes: C - connected, S - static, R - RIP, M - mobile, B - BGP
           D - EIGRP, EX - EIGRP external, O - OSPF, IA - OSPF inter area
           N1 - OSPF NSSA external type 1, N2 - OSPF NSSA external type 2
           E1 - OSPF external type 1, E2 - OSPF external type 2
           i - IS-IS, su - IS-IS summary, L1 - IS-IS level-1, L2 - IS-IS level-2
           ia - IS-IS inter area, * - candidate default, U - per-user static route
           o - ODR, P - periodic downloaded static route
    Gateway of last resort is 10.254.144.13 to network 0.0.0.0
         10.0.0.0/8 is variably subnetted, 330 subnets, 7 masks
    B       10.254.156.104/30 [20/0] via 10.254.144.13, 3d23h
    [etc etc]
    10.254.144.13 is the next hop for all networks in the ADMIN VRF, this router is not dual attached.
    My PC sits behind a firewall outside the MPLS network, the VRFs in the MPLS network rely on a default all-zeros route into the firewall - hence there is not specific route for the subnet my PC is on.
    From my PC, I can ping the Loopback1 address, however I cannot get to any management services (ssh, telnet, http or https) via loopback1. When I add a static route for my PC (/32) (or for the entire 10.0.0.0/8 network - which is my current work around), I can then ssh or telnet etc to Loopback1.
    Loopback0 (in the global context) works fine regardless of if it's relying on the all zeros route or not.
    Anyone seen this before? It appears to be a bug in the IOS that management services do not look at the default route within a VRF?

    You can generate a default route with the following command:
    neighbor 1 default-originate
    and you need to have a default route in the routing table. This will get the PE to generate a default route to the CE.

  • Eliminating excessive dhcpcd add/remove default route messages

    I've been on an IPv6 network for the past several months. I use no network manager (aside from netctl and wifi-menu) and I'm generally wired in. I manually start dhcpcd on my eth0 when I start my computer.
    The issue I've been having and have been unable to resolve is the fact that the following two messages have been repeating in my log every 2-10 seconds for the past several months and I now have several thousand of them. It's just getting annoying at this point because it interferes with actually reading relevant log messages via journalctl:
    Mar 22 10:45:56 kcuzner-desktop dhcpcd[1109]: eth0: adding default route via fe80::fa8f:caff:fe2d:b464
    Mar 22 10:45:56 kcuzner-desktop dhcpcd[1109]: eth0: removing default route via fe80::fa8f:caff:fe2d:b464
    No matter what I search, I can't seem to find a way to get rid of these. I keep a terminal open with journalctl -f running almost always and it's just filled with these, quickly pushing away relevant messages such as "codeblocks dumped core". Does anyone have any tips for preventing these sorts of log entries?
    Last edited by Los Frijoles (2015-03-22 18:27:41)

    I don't think there is a way for journalctl to exclude logging from only dhcpcd. Of course, you can filter the real time logging to the group of units that you do want to watch but I think you want to watch everything else, right?
    How about trying systemd-networkd rather than dhcpcd? Or, if you are only concerned about certain priority level messages, set the priority level. If everything you want to monitor is priority 4 and below for example, and if this message priority is 6, then you're all set.

  • ICMPv6 RA: ndisc_router_discovery() failed to add default route

    I have the rv215w and have it setup on our network. I have downloaded and installed the latest firmware prior to putting the router in place. The issue I have though ius I keep getting "ICMPv6 RA: ndisc_router_discovery() failed to add default route" repeatedly in the logs. I have it set to dhcp and not sure what I need to do to resolve this issue.

    I have the same issue.  In my case, as I posted here, IPv6 only seems to work on the main VLAN, but not on the other(s).  I wonder if this "ICMPv6 RA" error is referring to the default route that fails to install on the extra VLAN(s), but of course I am not exactly sure.

  • IPv6 support in IOS

    hi,
    we have a Cisco 2851 router and bought the following IOS::
    System image file is "flash:c2800nm-spservicesk9-mz.124-25d.bin"
    Cisco IOS Software, 2800 Software (C2800NM-SPSERVICESK9-M), Version 12.4(25d), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
    I thought this version was supposed to have IPv6 support?
    TEST(config)#ipv6 unicast-routing

    TEST(config)#
    which IOS should we buy?

    I think you need the IOS  advanced IP Services.

  • Can you help? Two dialer interfaces with IP SLA for default route failover - issues

    I have an issue with a Cisco 2821, it has an ADSL2+ HWIC  whose ATM interfaces is linked to dialer 1 and a Gi0/1 interface with a pppoe client which is linked to dialer 2.  Both dialer interfaces are up with their respective IP addresses.  If the ADSL on dialer 1 fails i want the IP SLA to kick and and replace the default route for dialer 1 with one for dialer 2.
    This config works if you manually shut down the dialer 1 interface, it injects the default route for dialer 2 and then when you unshut the interface, the default route for dialer 1 comes back.  The problem i have is if you take out the cable for the ATM interface and take it down, it does not take the route out the routing table and the default route for dialer2,  which works if you just shut down dialer 1 does not appear.
    whats the difference between shutting down dialer1 and it fails over the default route and taking the cable out then it does not?
    Here is my config, i'm sure its something simple i'm doing wrong, can anyone help???

    Sure that EEM can shut/unshut interface...you have "event track" in EEM for monitoring track events...for example:
    event manager applet test
    event track 1 state down
    action 1.0 command "enable"
    action 1.1 command "conf t"
    action 1.2 command "interfac dialer 1"
    action 1.3 command "shut"
    action 1.4 syslog "Dialer 1 down!!!"
    action 1.5 end
    This would be an example from head :)
    You would need another EEM similar to this one for unshutting interface with "event track 1 state up" for bringing interface up again.
    Again as I said you would need to test this before putting in production and you would maybe need to tweak this a little bit acording to your needs...

  • Distribute list in Nexus 7K to allow only default route

    Hi All,
    We are about to migrate our core routers into two Nexus 7Ks with four VDCs each.
    I was planning to permit only the default route (0.0.0.0) into the building aggregation switch (Cisco 6509). I planned to use distribute-list as I have done it in IOS and I could allow it through any specific interface I want.
    Well, how do I do that in Nexus 7K? I don't see any distrubute list option. I can use prefix list, but then how do I specify the particular interface?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Well, I found my own answer!
    Here is the command that goes on the Interface. I kept typing IP eigrp and hence did not get any option! Thanks for looking. You do offset-list the same way.
