Losing layers when saving

I am currently creating template letters in photoshop due to the design required on the paper and have completed my designs. I am first saving as a PSD file, I am then exporting as a PDF with a different file name and in a different location. However now when I open the .PSD file, everything is on one layer and I can now no longer edit the text.
Im sure this is probably an easy thing to fix but I cannot work out why it is doing it in the first place.
Any help would be most appreciated.

In the "save as" box do you have a check mark for layers?

  • Why does Illustrator CS4 merge layers when saving document?

Woking in Illustrator CS4, I have a document with four layers.  The first three contain (1) Background (2) Background effects (3) Pictures and the (4) contains text.  When I save the document and then re-open it, all the layers have been merged into the latest, 4th layer.  All the previous layers are empty.  It's as if everything has been grouped into the text layer, no element can be independently selected, and it is therefore impossible to do further work on the document.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening?  Am I not saving this correctly?
And even more important, is there any way of restoring the different layers once this has happened?

Can anyone tell me why this is happening?  Am I not saving this correctly?
Well, to what format are you saving? The native AI format should always retain layers. Other formats such as EPS or older PDF Levels may indeed enforce flattening. also make sure you are not confusing layers with groups/ objects. There's a crucial difference between the two.
And even more important, is there any way of restoring the different layers once this has happened?
Well, you can manually add new layers and drag&drop your objects and groups into the new layers in the layers panel, but if you save it again to the wrong file format, that is wasted effort, so for the life of it make sure you get that figured out first.

  • Losing quality when saving for web after using Multiply

I have a normal photograph, with a red layer on top set to Multiply/Darken. When I save it for web, regardless of what pixel size, or what uploader I use the quality is terrible.
Have tried uploading to different services, from difference devices with the same issue, so assume it's a colour profile thing.
    Any help appreciated.
Image shows the difference in quality compared to normal.

DPI is pixel size and images are not displayed on screens with the pixels sized as specified in images resolution setting.  The images pixels are displayed on displays with pixels the size the display is run with.  So web images display on display, display with different sizes and resolution depending on the users display device.
Images saved for web display should be saved with sRGB colors for many image viewers are not color managed and assume web images have sRGB colors.
So you images will display differently on different displays and no matter how you save them colors will vary  displays may  not be calibrated all displays do not have the same color capabilities.
The best you can do is calibrate your display and save them with sRGB colors jpeg or png files that display well  and look good on your calibrated display.
Most desktop displays are 100DPI resolution displays where newer  tablets and laptop have high resolution displays 200 to 300DPI.  Even new Desktop 4k display have lower resolution.  I believe the highest resolution 4K display in production is the Dell 24: display . Its resolution is 185DPI.   Out of production is IBM's old 4K display which had a 204DPI resolution.

  • Losing filename when saving in interchange

    Hi,
I couldn't find any info regarding this in the archives - when I save my file, produced in CS3, to .inx, the file lose its name when opened in CS2, and just shows : untitled-1. Anyone can help?
    Thanks!

That's exactly what it means...but losing the file name is the least of your worries. You also lose bullets and numbering accuracy, text variables, text wrap on master page items and whole host of other things.

  • Conditional read only radiogroup item losing value when saving

    Apex 3.2
I have a radiogroup item that is set to read only after it's populated and the user is not in the ADMIN Role. When non ADMIN users edit the page, it shows the value and they cannot change it, but if they save the page, it loses the value. Works fine if the user has ADMIN role.
This is the Pl/SQL function in the "Item is read only when" section
    begin
if :p3_event_detail_id is not null and :p3_notification_period_id != -1 and not apex_util.public_check_authorization('ADMIN') then
    return true;
    else
    return false;
    end if;
    end;
There is also a Not Null validation on this radiogroup item.
I changed the item type to select list and it works fine, but user like the radiogroup button.
    Any ideas?

It's using a shared component LOV cleverly called LOV_YN which consists of a static LOV with
    1 Display=Yes, Return=Y
    2 Display=No, Return=N
The settings in the LOV section on the item iteself:
    Named LOV: LOV_YN
Display Extra values: No Dynamic translation: Not translated
Number of columns: 2 Display null: No
Null display value is blank as is null return value
Item was setup as a radio group and was only converted over to a select list to work around this issue. Let me know what else you need and thanks again.

  • Back saving illustrator CC file to CS6 without losing layers?

How can I back save illustrator files created in CC (CS7 version???) to CS6 without losing layers?  when I open the files in CS6 it says "some info will be lost'   Ha!  all layers and separation is lost, so cannot separate parts... whole file seems grouped and cannot be separated???
When I go back to my (other) computer where I was foolish enought to upgrade to CC, I cannot figure a way to save back as I can with InDesign and saving as a idml file.  Help!

    Hi, M
Thanks for the reply... what do you mean by the 'second' dialog box... do you mean the Format box?
I am on a mac mini with Illustrator CS6 and do not want to load Illustrator CC to it (too many problems)
but have Illustrator CC on my laptop (now at home, not with me) where the files were created on it.  I saved the files to a flash to work on my mini while away... but encounter problems if I just open the CC files in CS6.
So... I am trying to explain to my husband (at home with the laptop) how to save the needed files 'back' for me so that they open fully and safely in CS6.... but doing it sort of 'blind' thus I need very specific, step by step instuctions and to explain to him exactly what each box or choice is named.
Sorry it is so hard, but he is not computer literate.  Adobe help said to do the following:
click on save as, then click on save, then you get window where at top is an option for a dropdown window and it has a 'default version 17' which then gives another dropdown with options to backward save as CS6 or CS5.
That 'save as' then 'save' seemed strange (to an illustrator and InDesign user) as did the 'default version 17' part.
In CS6 the save as Format box only offers ai, eps, ait, pdf, fxg, svgz, and svg.... nothing that sounds like the .idml of InDesign backsaving....  I as about to call home and try to walk him thru the above, blind... when got your email which sounded more hopeful.
Can you be more specific as to what  to look closely at?  Thanks so much!

  • Why do my images and layered files 'shrink' in pixel size when 'saving as/saving for web'?

I'm using CS3 and when I "Save As" or "Save For Web" to a format like .jpg for example, the resulting .jpg is reduced in size considerably.
For example I was touching up a photograph that was 1300 x 700. I saved out the file for web to my desktop and emailed it to a friend. When my friend opened it, it had shrunk down to about 75% of the original 1300 x 700 size. I have the same problem when saving out layered .psd's, which lead me to believe it had something to do with my save settings. I've scoured the net for answers as well as gone through each setting, but have not been able to solve this problem.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer in solving this annoying problem!
    Jason

Jeffrey, I checked the UI dialog and it's set to 'original'.
Marian, this problem occurs whether I email the file or not.
Thanks for the responses guys, but the problem continues. Any other thoughts? Remember this happens under both 'Save As' and 'Save for Web' actions.

  • Losing axis settings on line chart when saving as excel

    Hi,
When I go to save a file as excel, I seem to lose all my axis settings on the line charts. I have auto scale turned on and it's scaled properly, then when it goes into excel it defaults out to 0-120% on the Y axis. Any way to avoid?

    Hi,
Source : SAP note 1367058 - Chart scale not kept when saving a WebIntelligence report to Excel
    Cause
    This behaviour is by design
There are 2 types of scales in a chart, auto scale and manual scale. By default in all chart the Y axis is an auto scale, And in case of auto scale in business objects the max and min values are calculated by the report engine based on the size of chart, the number of values of variables on that axis etc.
When saving the same report in excel, in case of auto scale we can not store the max and min values of Graph from reporter, and Excel will decide it max and min values by its own based on several factors like resolution of the graph, the number of vairable present, the layout etcu2026 We could not decide the max and min values of a graph in excel in case of auto scale.
    Resolution
       1. Edit WebIntelligence report
       2. Select the chart
       3. Go to Properties tab
       4. Expand Y axis parameter
       5. Select "scale"
      6.  Manually insert the max value

  • Losing Layers: Illustrator

Some of my students are working with the Creative Cloud at home. However, the computers on campus and my own home computer are purchased copies and are currently running 16.0.3. When one of my students makes something at home with layers and then opens it on a school computer, the layers disappear. There is just Layer 1 with everything as a sublayer. Sometimes there might be a clipping a group if they used a clipping mask on the layer, but usually it's just a ton of stuff all under Layer 1. Why are my students losing their layers?

When saving an AI file you normally save a PDF inside of that.
When opening the file in a lower version (which is practically what these students do), they don't access the AI part of the file, but the PDF part. And in this there are no layers that Illustrator can use.
When saving those files at home they need to save it in CS6 format in order to open it at school.
Actually you should read that text. It teaches you about file formats, which is something that is kind of special in Illustrator. Has been for the last 6 versions.

  • Errors when saving to SMB mounts (a thorough examination)

Several of the users I support have reported the following issue when trying to save files to the network from Photoshop. I have found several threads about this on both the Adobe forums and the Mac forums. However, in most of the threads the information provided is incomplete or does not control for enough variables. And the result is that Adobe seems to blame Apple, and Apple seems to blame Adobe. So blame aside, here is information that I hope helps Adobe solve the issue at hand.
When saving to a mounted SMB point, users report one of two errors:
Could not save <filename> because of a program error
Could not save <filename> because write access was not granted
I can replicate the issue on:
Lion 10.7.X with Photoshop CS 5
Lion 10.7.X with Photoshop CS 5.1
Snow Leopard 10.6.X with Photoshop CS 5
Snow Leopard 10.6.X with Photoshop CS 5.1
    Details:
We have only seen this error in Photoshop.  << Adobe has seen the same problems in several other applications >>
I have not tested out whether the issue applies to any other products in the CS suite.
At first I thought the issue might have to do with permissions, but it does not. I have reapplied permissions and the issue persists. And it affects all users, including Domain Admins, such as me, who have no R/W restrictions at any level.
The issue only occurs when Finder is in a view that shows a thumbnail/preview of the image.
Switching Finder to list mode resolves the error in all scenarios
So far I can replicate this with any file on any mount on any of our servers
It only occurs on mounted network points (ie - if I move the files locally, no errors are encountered)
For the following tests, presume the following:
    Source folder: smb://example/source/folder
    Target folder: smb://example/source/folder
    Target sub-folder: smb://example/source/folder/sub
Here are the steps I tested:
    Opened the file problem_file.psd.
A warning pops up prompting me to resolve a font vector issue, I chose "Update"
Note: that this error does not pop up for every file, just the original file I worked with, but this warning has nothing to do with the errors being received
Moved a layer so that there would be a change to save
    Clicked save
Received the error: "Could not save <filename> because of a program error"  << probably related to the known MacOS bug on SMB, or a known Finder/thumbnailing bug >>
The original file, problem_file.psd, is *DELETED* (very problematic)  << Known MacOS bug in SMB service, Apple is working on it >>
Then I tested with multiple variations of the following to conrol for things such as layers or font issues:
To eliminate the source file being the issue, I used a .png file that I had created locally with the OS-X screen shot keyboard command. This eliminated layers and fonts as issues.
In step 2 I chose to not update the font vector issue
In step 4 I tried saving as different file types (.jpg, .png, .gif)
Prior to step 6 I flattend the image to eliminate fonts and layers. This eliminated layers and fonts as issues.
Prior to step 6 I flattened the image, duplicate the image, closed the original (without saving), and attempted to save the new duplicate. This eliminated layers and fonts as issues.
Each variation still resulted in "Could not save <filename> because of a program error" and resulted in the deletion of the source file.
Next I controlled for saving image previews:
Photoshop -> Preferences -> File Handling
Under File Saving Options -> Image Previews, I set it to "Never Save" previews
Now when I repeated the tests from aobve, I receved the error "Could not save <filename> because write access was not granted".
Next I controlled for .DS_store files:
Disabled .DS_Store file creation on remotely mounted points.
Deleted the .DS_Store file for the source folder
Verified that .ds_store files were not being created on remotely mounted points
Ran the tests above, and the issue persisted: "Could not save <filename> because write access was not granted"
Now I decided to test sub-folders:
    Created a target sub-folder.
Repeated the test above, and its variations, but saving the problem_file.psd to the target sub-folder.
Still received one of the two errors, depending on the variation, but the source file is no longer deleted. This make sense because saving in another directory is really a "save as", and one would not expect safe saving (talked about more later) to affect source files in this scenario.
    Sort of a Solution:
    Open the file from Finder
Depending on the Finder view, Finder shows a thumnail of the image
Go back to Finder and select a different file
    Make changes to the file
    Save the file
    No error is received
This is when I discovered that the error only occurs when Finder is in a view that shows a thumbnail/preview of the image. Further testing of Finder show that in Cover Flow the error only occurs for the selected image. For example:
    Cover flow shows thumbnails/previews of files: A, B, C, D, E
    Open A
In Cover Flow select file B
The thumnails of of files A, B, C, D, E are still visible
Make a change to the open file
    Save the change
    No error is received
This shows that Finder is treating the thumbnails/previews of unselected files different than selected files.
    An Interesting Twist:
If from the last scenario with Cover Flow...
    Open file A
Go back to Finder and select a different file
Then make a change and attempt to save to the target sub-folder
Receive the error "Could not save <filename>" because of a program error.
    Discussion:
Photoshop does something called safe saving.
Photoshop saves the current document to a temporary file with a unique name
Photoshop deletes the original file << this is incorrect >>
Photoshop moves the temporary file to a file with the name of the original file that was deleted in step 2  << incorrect: the temp file replaces the original with an OS call to a function that is supposed to be an atomic operation >>
However, you can see that "safe saving" is misnamed, because while the original is deleted, Photoshop does not appear to be correctly ensuring that permissions exist to allow the temporary file to be ranemd or that the temporary file was renamed without error. Photoshop is either:
Not checking for the error  << yes, it is >>
Checking for the permissions and not catching the error  << incorrect >>
Checking for the permissions and giving an error to generic to discern the exact problem from. << also incorrect >>
Somewhere there is a conflict (perhaps a race condition) between:
    Photoshop creating the temporary file
The server applying permission to the newly created temporary file
OS-X reporting the file has been created
    Photoshop deleting the original file
    Photoshop saving the new file
Finder updating the thumbnail of the file
As I've shown here, the problem doesn't seem to reside fully with Apple or fully with Adobe. Hopefully this post provides enough information for some clever engineer to create a fix.
My information about safe saving is from an Adobe mod on a previous thread regarding this issue << and copied incorrectly, plus added bad assumptions>>. He detailed the process and also explained that Photoshop uses OS APIs to create and delete the files during safe saving. If his details are accurate, it seems that a temporary fix would at least change the safe saving process to the following:
Photoshop saves the current document to a temporary file with a unique name
Photoshop moves the original file to a temporary backup file (original-file-name.original-extension.bak)
Photoshop moves the temporary file to a file with the name of the original file moved in step 3
Photoshop checks to make sure that the temporary file has been succesfully renamed
If the temporary file has successfully been renamed, it deletes the backup file from step 2 OR if the temporary file has failed to be renamed, the backup is returned to its original file name
The appropriate error message, if any, is displayed

    You got several details wrong.
And it sounds like you are describing 2 known MacOS bugs:
    1) The OS fails when creating or swapping files on SMB servers, and this happens more often on files that have a resource fork.
    2) The Finder/QuickLook/Thumbnailing holds a file busy when it should not, causing program errors or file is busy errors.
We did as much as we could to work around these issues in Photoshop CS6 - after spending a lot of time debugging the OS issues and working with Apple.
Apple is still working on proper fixes within the OS.

  • I received a psd file created in CS6 for MAC, I am unable to find the layers when I open it in photoshop in Windows. What can i do to edit the files?

I received a psd file created in CS6 for MAC, I am unable to find the layers when I open it in photoshop in Windows. What can i do to edit the files? What can be done so that I can either open and see the layers or how can the sender save it in a way that it doesn't "merge" the layers in some way to just one?

Could try saving as tiff provided layers and transparency are chosen at the time of saving. But it's hard to give a definitive answer as it depends on the final usage. For example PSD's tend to work better in applications like In Design in comparison with tiff.

I haven't been unify photoshop much in the past month, but I did try your suggestion and it seemed to work for a while. Today when i went to save a document the same thing happened: click on file>save at this point I can not click on save even though it is highlighted. Tryed to use command s that brings up the save dialogue box, but when I try to change file type I again cannot select it from the drop down menu.

  • When saving .tif or .eps files, it usually erases the last 2, 3 or 4 letters, why? ("as copy" issue)

    hi again
this is a question i wanted to ask the last couple of years:
it doesnt depend on CS5 or CS4, i guess nearly all newer versions
of photoshop erase some letters at the end of a filename, when saving as tif or eps, and the file was a photoshop .psd layer file before.
i am working with many masks, so when i finish a psd layer file and want to save it as tiff (without layers and path) for sending out to client,
i press "apple+alt+S" and the "save as" window checks "copy" as default, of course, i want to preserve the original filename without "..copy"
so i uncheck "save as copy", and then there are some letters missing, i have to manually replace the letters by the original ones.
thats very awkward and time consumptive, is there a better workaround, you could suggest?
is this my fault, maybe wrong workflow? what could i change, in order to avoid photoshop erasing letters in filenames, when saving?
what could i do, that "save as copy" wont appear anymore? i am always saving in another folder than the layer file folder,
but i can only select the folder after photoshop has checked "save as copy" by itself very quick, as it thinks i want to save the tiff file
into the .psd layer file folder...
i am usually manually editing the filename in the finder later,
as it has been very important for myself to stay with the original filename
as clients use the images in indesign, so it can auto-update, if the filename is the same as before.
    thanks for any help!

    thanks for your answer!
i am dealing with this problem within 1 or 2 years now, i guess.
photoshop always shortens my original filename, when i press "save as"
i am experiencing this problem on 3 macs, on different locations
(in my homeoffice and at another office i work freelance) (very different macs and photoshop versions (from CS3 to CS5)
    like:
original filename "vitra_woodenchair_hires_cmyk_original.psd" will be shortened to "vitra_woodenc copy.TIF"
i have to edit the files after that manually in the finder, as i send it back to clients, and they need their original filenames.
i also wonder why photoshop cs5 always wants to save a copy -
i never needed a copy of a file in my life, so why "save as copy" please?
i guess my problem is depending more or less only on the "save as copy" thing,
as it looks like, that the letters "copy" are erasing the end of my filename.
is there anything i can do, that photoshop wont suggest me a "save as copy" ever again?
    can i switch it off?
your suggestion of scripts is nice, i doubt, i am able to install a script at different macs, i never ve been dealing with
scripts before, it seems to be too complicate or it just sounds complicate to me, as i dont have specific
file save destinations, i save at different places on different mac servers in the mentioned offices. also i save
different kind of file types, sometimes psd, tiff, eps, jpg, png and all others...
i try deleting .plist now and report back
    thanks meanwhile...

  • Text layers not saved correctly as PDF from PS?

I frequently save layouts I do in Photoshop as PDF's. Lately I very often will discover the text does not display correctly in the PDF. One or two lines of text will display as white with a thin black outline, rather than as the basic solid black I'd specified.
I work on a Windows 7 machine with the current version of PS. The text is on layers when I save the file to PDF (from PS), but I do not include the layers in the PDF, so they should be flattening down.
Any ideas why this happens? I noticed a few weeks ago when it was also doing this that I updated the program a day later and the PDF's were not exhibiting this issue. But, now it's starting again. A big timewaster for me.
    Thanks for any suggestions offered.

Text doesn't flatten until you tell it to. In fact that may be the problem here - you are telling the PDF maker to not retain vector text and when it tries to flatten, some layer style or something else gets in the way. Try to play with the PDF options. also manaulyl flatten the document in PS before saving to PDF...
