Losing link to photos in iphoto - will moving to aperature solve this?

Hi all
I am an avid photographer who has a mac and a xp system. Currently I am using my macbook pro to manage my iphoto library and I am having a lot of problems in that the link between the library and the picture gets broken. I am left with the big black exclamation mark and I either have to find a copy of the picture or delete the shot entirely. I also have similar challenges when importing my pictures. So, since I got my mac I have this experience and it has made me feel like the mac is unreliable for managing my precious shots. Fyi, I do have a post on the iPhoto forum for this.
What I am hoping to find out is whether moving to Aperture or Lightroom will fix my problem. I have tried both products on a trial basis, and although I preferred Lightroom, I would be happy to use either application.
Has anyone experienced this problem in iphoto and moved to aperture or lightroom and found it has solved the problem? My fear is that moving to Aperature will just point to the iphoto library and I will have the same problem.
Any help will be appreciated
Tammy

Hi Tammy
I have not used iPhoto but can help you on Aperture.
Aperture will create its own library that is not connected to iPhoto, it will allow you to bring in your existing iPhoto library along with all the metadata.
Aperture has the benefit of allowing for easy backup via the vault feature.
There is a great collection of tutorials here

  • After Mountain Lion update I cannot save iMail photos to iPhoto anymore, how do I solve this?

I just did the update for Mountain Lion and now I cannot save attached photos directly from an e-mail into my iPhoto.  I was able to do it before without any problems.  Is there a fix for this.

As of 2012-10-11, with all the available fixes installed (10.8.2 + supplemental update and iPhoto 9.4.1), this problem is still present. I have confirmed it on three different machines, all of which had all of the latest updates installed.
Hopefully Apple will address this soon enough — I have no problem working around this issue myself, but my mother found it much more challenging.

  • If I delete photos in "iPhoto" will those photos also delete in the application "Photos"

Hey guys! I was wondering if I delete photos in "iPhoto" will those photos also delete in the new application "Photos".
I transfered all my photos to "Photos" the second it came out, so I'd find it strange if I still needed "iPhoto"
    Thanks a lot!

No, they will not be deleted from Photos. The two libraries are totally independent of each other.
YEs, you can now delete the iPhoto Library, but if you want yo do this to gain disk space, you won't see much of a difference. Reason being that both Libraries merely point to the same image files on your disk via hard links.
For now, I would suggest moving the iPhoto Library to an external disk "just in case."

  • Losing access to photos in iPhotos

I am losing access to photos in iPhoto. When viewing in "photos" the lost photos appear as blank and do not show when selected. When viewing in All Events the photos appear as the cursor is moved over the square, but do not appear and cannot be viwed as individual full sized photos

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • If i edit photos in iphoto, will that carry the editing to the same photos that are in an idvd slideshow?

If i edit photos in iphoto, will that carry the editing over into the same pictures in idvd? Things like red eye, cropping, lighting, etc? I know it doesn't work if I have rotated a picture in iphoto- it doesn't show as rotated in idvd.

I assumed - it so easy to do and to often to fast.
If i edit photos in iphoto, will that carry the editing over into the same pictures in idvd?
To carry over to pictures in iDVD - made me assume that there was a project in iDVD that had pictures to whom
an adjustment could be carried over to. And if so - that might be in vain - due to the iDVD BUG that MIGHT also
hit Menus and or SlideShow projects.
BUT - I assumed - and may be wrongfully so - I'm SO sorry.

  • Cannot re-load photos into iPhoto after moving to external

    HELP!
I have over 3,000 photos and had to move them to an external drive as my computer ran out of space. Now that I have moved everything, I am having a hard time accessing my photos in iPhoto.
Anytime I try to import I receive the following message:
'Unreadable file: The following files could not be imported (they may be unrecognized file type of the files may bot contain valid data)
Please tell me this can be fixed!!!

    Hi todd,
Do you want to keep your library on the external as the library that iPhoto uses and imports into?
If you do, then just launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and choose to open another library. Navigate to the library on the external and choose it.
Now this is the library iPhoto uses. Is this something that you want to do?
When you launch iPhoto holding down the Option key this is the window you will get.
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library if that is what you want to do, or choose a library to open by clicking the "choose" button.
If you click the "create library" iPhoto will open with a brand new library for you to import images to. If you click "choose" then you will get this window.
    Open library
Navigate to where the library is on your computer and then choose it.

  • Link to photo on Dropbox will not open

I have been sent an email that contains a link to a picture that sender has stored on Dropbox.
The link worked fine on my laptop, but will not open the jpg on my Playbook.
What I see, is a rectangular grey image with break therough the corner. Maybe indicating a broken picture?
When I look under downloads, the picture name is there, but it is a very small file (33kb) and will not open.
I have done some tests myself and this happens regardless of the file or who sends it. I have tried smaller jpg files and same thing happens. I also tried changing the link from https to http with no change.
Here is an example of the link.
    http://www.dropbox.com/s/3zp32c5qhiyq4eo/luke100.jpg
I would like to know why this happens and if there is a way to open the images.

I tried sending myself a different picture (much smaller) from my laptop as a Dropbox link as before. It opened fine once I chose OK as described above.
I notice you have a 64Gb and I have 32GB. Could that make a difference as to the memory allocated for file downloads?
I have no idea why it does that on your end and not on mine or vice-versa.
I doubt that the capacity would make a diffrence for the download, unless you have very little space left on the device
    I tried something else.
Dropbox have changed the way we share files. In past, there was a public folder. Files were pasted into that folder and by right clicking, a link could be pasted to clipboard for insertion in an email. The newest version of Dropbox no longer has the public folder. You click on the file, in say Photos, and then on share. Then you can send file directly or copy link to clipboard and paste in an email.
The links created have a different format. Here are two I sent to PB
Firstly from new version of Dropbox using Sharing
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/3zp32c5qhiyq4eo/luke100.jpg
andfrom older version of Dropbox using  public link
    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54783344/luke100.jpg
As before, the first link does not open the picture on PB. But the second one opens fine.
On other computers, both links open properly.
So, it seems there is something about the new style link that MY Playbook does not like.
To test this on another Playbook, it would be necessary to paste the two links into an email and send it to the Playbook. (On their own, the links will open in the browser, even on my Playbook).

  • I just installed elements 11 with camera raw 7.1. My  photos from iPhoto will not open in camera raw

I just installed elements 11 with camera raw 7.1 in my iMac. My raw photo files from iPhoto will not open in camera raw. The elements screen opens without a photo, but camera raw willnot open. Help.

You need to tell iphoto to send raw files out of iphoto or it will make its own conversion and send a pre-converted file. Go to the iphoto preferences>advanced and turn on this checkbox:

  • Some photos in iPhoto will not sync/copy to iPhone

I have an album in iPhoto that contains photos that will not transfer to the iPhone.  There is no indication from phone or iTunes that there is/was any problem during the sync.  I have tried the following:
Create new and different album with those pictures and resync
Create new album with 1 of the offending pictures, but even a single picture will not move to the phone
This problem has existed through several iOS, iTunes, and iPhoto transitions, including latest for each
iPhone has been wiped and completely restored
iPhone has been DFU reset (for a different problem)
    Any help is appreciated

I seem to have figured this out, finally.  I did the following:
Removed the pictures from iPhoto completely
    Reimported them into iPhoto
Now the sync seems to work.
    No idea why

  • If I convert photos for iPhoto will they still be okay in aperture 3.0?

I have Aperture 3.0 but desire to create and order a calendar.  However, calendars are not available in Aperture (wish they were) but they are in iPhoto.  When I open iPhoto, it presents me with a dialogue box that says it will need to update my library to be compatible.  I'm concerned that it is, in effect, moving the aperture library to iPhoto and that isn't what I intend.  Can anyone offer clarifications or suggestions?
    Thanks.

Aperture and iPhoto have totally different and seperate libraries - upgrading the iPhoto library will not affect teh Aperture library in any way

  • I have an external hard drive connected to my iMac 2006; the OS on this iMac has been upgraded.  I wanted to have back up copies of all our photos on iPhoto; I moved the iPhoto Library folder to the EHD.  Now I want to delete a lot of the photos on the iM

I want to delete the photos on the iMac's hard drive but I want all the copies on the EHD; to free up space on the iMac.  I experimented by deleting one photo in the iPhoto library on iMac but when I checked the EHD, it was deleted there, too.  How can I delete photos from iMac w/out deleting from EHD?

Photo Library icon that sits on my desktop
Do a Get Info in the Finder on that, is it an Alias pointing to the external drive?
Open the iPhoto Library folder on your actual internal drive in the Finder, is that deleed pic stil there?

  • If you edit photos in iPhoto, will Photo Stream (iCloud) update the photos on your other devices?

Am I dreaming or will Photo Stream (iCloud) update photos on my Macbook when I edit them (enhance, crop, rotate, etc) on my iMac (automatically or otherwise)? If so, do I need to do anything besides the basic Photo Stream setup to make this happen? The movie on Apple's site about iCloud seems to imply this is true, but it's vague. I'm unable to find anything about this in the small amount of Help articles about iCloud. Thanks for any help.

    Yes via your Wi-Fi network.

  • PHOTOS FROM IPHOTO WILL NOT IMPORT INTO CLIP VIEWER WHERE MOVIE IS CREATED

ok...please answer this question...i NEED it to be answered!!!!! When I try to put the Ken burns effect on a photo and then import it into the clip viewer, it will NOT let me!!!! Please H~E~L~P ME!!!!!!!!!
        HELP ME!!!!!

    Welcome to discussions!
You have not told us enough information to H~E~L~P you.
We need to know everything about your Mac, hard drive space (look at mine below). Go to "My Settings" at the right of this screen and fill out that information please.
In the meantime, i'll throw a couple of ideas your way:
If you are you trying to edit a previously imported image rendered by the Ken Burns Effect, there's an iMovie bug that prevents us from updating the clip when we empty the iMovie trash.
iMovie HD 6 requires Quartz Extreme-compatible graphics cards
