Losing metadata presets applied to images

I have one basic metadata preset that I apply to images after they have been imported. I've noticed that on a regular basis, every single image in my library loses its applied metadata preset and it reverts back to "none". For the life of me I cannot figure out why this is happening and I don't know whether it's a bug or a feature.
My standard workflow is that after I import images, I select all the images in the new folder I have designated for those images and apply my specific metadata preset but it seems that a few days later or after I import new images, all metadata presets are gone again. I have noticed this issue with Lightroom 3 and again with Lightroom 4 after I have upgraded so I don't think it's related to a specific version.

This usually happens when a change is made to a field in the metadata which is selected in the preset. For example I had a similar problem because my 2012 metadata preset had the IPTC Image section erroneously selected, with all the fields in that section null in the preset. So then when I started adding GPS data and reverse geocoding, and started filling in the location fields, the metadata preset reverted to "none" because I had changed a field in that IPTC section, and thus the applied preset was no longer valid. Note however that even though the preset name reverts to "none", all the original data applied by the preset remains (apart from the one you changed).
So check your own preset, make sure only the fields that you won't be changing are selected.

  • Losing Camera Presets in RAW images

I attended a Nikon class a few weeks ago and they were, of course, pushing their own software and workflow. One of the reasons they gave for using their stuff was that many of the settings and adjustments made in the camera and saved as metadata with the RAW image, is lost when the file is imported to Aperture. One of these camera settings I like is Active-D Lighting. (I know this is easily re-corrected in Aperture but it would be nice if I didn't have to do it at all.)
Is there any way to preserve camera adjustments to Nikon RAW files in Aperture?
    Thanks in advance,

Short answer is Nope - outta luck.
Don't mean to rain on your parade here but not only is this a pain but NEF's seem to be Aperture's red headed step child of RAW formats.

  • LR applying outdated metadata preset on folder sync.

Lightroom changes my copyright year and contact info to old information when synchronizing a folder.
    Behavior:
A folder of processed & ready-to-deliver RAW files.  These files all have 2014 copyright and contact info.  Export these images to JPG in another folder.  (Export includes all metadata.)  Open these JPGs in PhotoMechanic to verify that the 2014 copyright and contact info is still embedded in the files.  Go back to LR, right click the folder that contains the JPGs, "Synchronize Folder..." wait for process to complete.  Look at metadata panel in LR or the added JPG files - all copyright and contact info has reverted back to an outdated 2013 preset.
Is there some place in LR where it's told to automatically apply a metadata preset?  I'm not going through the import panel - just a simple folder sync.

There's the key piece of info.  So LR remembers different import presets based on file type?
    Running two experiments.
First, I'm importing a folder of JPGs that I know already have 2014 copyright via the Import GUI (not synchronizing folder.)  The import interface opened, and the "Apply During Import - Metadata" drop-down was set to my 2014 copyright.  If LR remembers import defaults based on file type, then I would have expected to see it set to my 2013 metadata preset.
Just for science, I'm importing a folder of DNG files that are also already set to a 2104 copyright.  For these files as well, LR defaults to my 2014 copyright.
Am I not running the test the way you intended?  Any other ideas on why doing a folder sync would apply an old metadata preset?

  • Applying settings preset to multiple images in ACR v4.3

When attempting to apply a preset to multiple images in ACR, the preset is only applied to the "current" or "active" image. The other images in the thumbnail pane remain unchanged, even though they are selected. This function works correctly in Bridge, but not in ACR. "Synchronizing" the files does not do the same thing, as my preset incorporates "Apply auto tone adjustments." What am I missing?

Pardon my misunderstanding of the question. I just tried it, and the method of selecting the images has no impact (e.g., the "select all" button, or hold "shift" or "ctrl" and click on multiple images...)
All the boxes are checked in the "synchronize" dialog. However, this synchronizes all of the settings to the "active image," which ties the tone adjustments to that image, which is undesirable. I just want to automatically adjust the tones (as part of my preset) to all of the selected images.
Based upon input from this tread, this is the refined procedure I use to "check" if it's working (which hasn't for me so far):
    1) Select multiple images (or all, if you prefer)
    2) Apply "camera raw defaults" Note that the settings default to Blacks: +5, Brightness: +50, Contrast: +25
    3) Apply a saved preset (saved with the check box "Apply auto tone adjustments" checked).
    4) Note that the Blacks, Brightness, and Contrast sliders only "adjust" for the "active" image, but don't change for the other selections. They remain at Blacks: +5, Brightness: +50, Contrast: +25
Again, if I perform this procedure in Bridge, it works for all selected images. However, in ACR, it functions as described above.
    Does that clear it up?
Thanks for the prompt responses so far. I hope I'm simply doing something incorrectly!

  • Presets - only applying to images as they are seen in library pane

    I have lightroom version 1.2
Mac user 10.4.11 2.1 ghz processor
When I apply one of my presets to a large number of images (as in more than you can see at any one time in library pane) I notice it will only apply the preset to the images that I can see in the library pane.
As in if I scroll done to view images not already see on the library pane it then appears to start processing those images.
It is definitely doing this and not updating a preset that has already been applied. Why would it only apply preset to images as they are viewed in library pane.
Eventually of course the preset is applied to all images and once done it is done, but a bit of a nuisance as I need to babysit it.
Cannot think of a preference that would change this..
    Any ideas?
    Regards
    Larry

Ah yes I see if you go into library>previews>render standard previews as soon as you run your preset it will do it all for you.
    Thanks

  • Losing metadata after TIFF to JPEG conversion in Image Processor

When I use Image Processor to convert TIFF to JPEG for my images I am losing metadata information placed in the Properties section of my image file (PC). Is there a work-around for this so that the information isn't lost? Any idea why this is happening?

Possibly the tiff is 16 bit.
In Full Edit click Image à Mode à 8 Bit/channel
    Then save as jpeg.

  • What are the different metadata fields for in the Metadata presets?

The metadata preset box has a comprehensive array of metadata sections and fields. I just don't know what a lot of them should be used for. Some of them appear to duplicate headings in other fields, albeit with different names.
Can someone tell me what kind of information the following fields are meant for?
    Basic Info
Label - I've seen this used for the authors credit. The "Creator" and "Copyright" fields seem to take care of this though. Should it be used for something  else?
    Copy Name - ?
    IPTC Content
Headline - I've read that this is for describing the content. Isn't the "Caption" field in Basic Info for this?
    IPTC Subject Code - ?
Description Writer - The author/creator? If not, who?
    IPTC Image
Intellectual Genre - Same as "Category"?
    ISO Country Code - ?
    IPTC Status
Title - This may seem obvious, but the title often appears in the caption.
Job Identifier - I'm assuming this is for applying information pertinent to the author's filing system. If I'm wrong, what is it for?
    Instructions - as above?
    Provider - Author again?
    Source - Author yet again?
I'm sure there will be those who will argue that some or even most fields can be used for whatever information we wish to put in. My point is that they must be there for specific reasons.
Oh yes, before someone points me in the direction of the IPTC website, I've been there already and it was full of gobbledygook!
    Thanks in advance.

Also on the IPTC photo metadata site is a more approach able guide to using the fields:
    http://www.iptc.org/std/Iptc4xmpCore/1.0/documentation/Iptc4xmpCore_1.0-doc-CpanelsUserGui de_13.pdf
This guide was written for the original 1.0 IPTC Core specification, but I think it covers most of the terms you want to understand better. Specifically, it talks about the different roles the Headline, Title and Description (aka Caption) play as well as the Creator, Source and Provider.
    Examples:
    Headline:
A headline is a brief publishable synopsis/summary of the contents of the photograph. The Headline term should not be confused with the Title term.
    Description:
The Description field, often referred to as a “caption” is used to describe the who, what and why of what is happening in the photograph. If there is a person or people in the image, this caption might include their names, and/or their role in the action that is taking place. If the image is of a location, then it should give information regarding the location....
Here are three other places you might want to look for or ask about how other photographers are using the metadata:
    The PhotoMetadata.org web site
    http://www.photometadata.org/
    David Rieck's ControlledVocabulary.com
    http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/
-See Resources > CV Forum to find the Yahoo! groups forum for the site.
Peter Krogh's, the DAM Book site and forum:
    http://www.thedambook.com/
    http://thedambook.com/smf/index.php
The "Label" field is used to control the colored label that's displayed for the file in Lightroom, Bridge and (when opening multiple files) in the Camera Raw plugin. Both Lightroom and Bridge ship with default values mapped to the six-standard label colors. In Lightroom choose the Metadata > Color Label Set > Edit... to change them. In Bridge, use the Label panel in the Bridge preferences dialog.
You can really use this for whatever you need, but unlike the other terms defined by the IPTC, you should not necessarily expect others to use them for the same thing. Putting the photographer's name there probably doesn't make much sense. I know one Photographer who's assigned the name of a stock agency to each of the label colors so he can track what file was sent to what agency.

  • Random develop preset applied on undo operation

Anyone else with random presets being applied on undo?  I've encountered it a few times, and it's usually one of the following scenarios:
    a)  After some editing (say half hour over multiple images), an undo (does not matter what the undo is on, could be crop) results in a random preset applied.  The whole "undo stack", if it's tracked as such internally is messed up from this point on.
    b) Bulk changes to metadata edit capture time.  For example, select 700 out of 5000 images.  Edit capture time (set time) on one and the other 699 updates as well.  Do something else, like select a 1000, set a color.  Now go back and select the 700, "revert capture time" (say you realized the changed time was not correct).  A status bar goes by quickly.  Next thing I see are thumbnails changing color, turns out all of them had  a random (but same) preset applied.  "Undo stack" at this point is also messed up.
    LR5 Win7 x64.  Case (a) also happened with LR4 albeit less frequently.
So, anyone else with random presets applied or messed up undos?

  • Metadata presets

I have multiple metadata presets. In library view, I select one of the custom presets, and apply it to a photo or selected photos. This works fine; however, when I move to another image the preset reverts to 'None'. Is there any way to prevent this from happening.
I have checked this forum about setting a preference for medadata presets, but it does not seem to exist. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks for your help!

No, you can do one, select all the others as appopriate and hit 'Sync Metadata' button. bottom right!
    No need to copy/paste.

  • Metadata  presets in lightroom 2

I have created my own preset for metadata. Now how do I make it the default. Every time I switch to a new photo the "none" preset shows up. I would like my preset to be the one. Is there a way to make this possible?

thanks. It worked quite well and I added another idea that works too.
When I set up the metadata template I wanted for all my photos, I went to the base file of all my photos in Lightroom, selected all and then opened the preset I wanted in the presets on the right hand side. It then asked me if I wanted to apply the template too all. Select yes to all and now you have the preset applied to all the photos in lightroom.

  • Metadata presets dysfunctional

When I click on Metadata Presets, I no longer get the "Default" and "Edit Presets". Instead, they have been replaced by Adobe's long list of preset templates starting with "Black and White Presets". I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program to no avail. I have deleted the Library and unintalled and reinstalled to no avail. I have tried items on the Metadata listed on the tool bar to no avail. What can I do to get back the capability of editing and saving a custom preset?

Thank you, this has restored the presets but I now have to re-write the presets to all the photos in my catalog! I had to restore the program after restoring an image of my c drive [installed LR4 after the image was created] and I did not re-check my preferences.
Moral of the story: not only back up data regularly also back up system images regularly!

  • Metadata Presets in Import  Photos dialog

Can anyone tell me how to remove unwanted metadata presets from the drop-down list that appears in the "Information to Apply" section? I forgot to name one and it appears irritatingly as "Untitled Preset", apparently for ever more.

    Go to <br /><br />Mac<br />~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Metadata Presets/<br />Where "~" is your user directory.<br /><br />Windows XP<br />C:\Documents and Settings\<your_username>\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom\Metadata Presets<br /><br />And you should find it there. • Metadata presets, deleting erroneous names

Metadata Preset list contains five metadata file-names I created... three of those are in error. How does one delete these list-names? I've right-clicked, left-clicked, file-searched, etc... and continue to draw a blank.
    Thank you

    Bogdan, I appreciate your input.
Here's what I continue to find with Windows' Vista Ultimate:
under (username)-Pictures-Lightroom exists two folders plus one I've found before named "Lightroom Database" (about 43KB). It is not a "Folder," but carries the "LR" designation. Clicking on the file simply opens Lightroom where I was last working. But there is no way to get into that Lightroom Database file, nor any listing of previously created metafile listed names.
While Lightroom Database is highlighted, under "Properties" the Attributes "Read only" and "Hidden" are unmarked.
I remain totally baffled. While in Lightroom and working with an image I can create a NEW "Save as New Preset" Metadata profile/name... but I can't delete any of the five I previously created.

  • Can a metadata preset append instead of overwrite?

I Googled and then searched this forum with no luck. Thought this would be answered already:
Is it possible for a metadata preset to only overwrite a field if it is empty? I'd like to apply a preset to many files at a once but have it preserve data if it already exists.
I'm sure I can do this with external tools like ExifTool but would prefer an all-LR solution if possible.

  • LR2 - "Metadata Preset Copy Metadata..." - please help.

    Hi all,
I have trouble getting "Copy Metadata" to work similar to how it used to work in LR1.x.
When I use "Copy Metadata" not only the selected Metadata are copied - but all available Metadata regardless of selected with checkmark or not.
Example: When I create a new Metadata preset based on an existing picture and select "IPTC Copyright", "IPTC Creator" and "IPTC Image" and NOT select Keywords - keywords are still copied to the new preset. Same operation works as expected in LR1.x - but not in LR2.
I can manually "correct" the preset in a external editor - but not from inside LR.
Is this a known bug - or a specific issue on my system?
