Losing photo tags when upgrading

If I upgrade from Elements 10 to Elements 11, will I lose my photo tags that I've already assigned to all my existing photos?

You have to do the upgrade properly, let PSE 11 upgrade the PSE 10 catalog. This should happen the first time you launch PSE11 Organizer (it will ask you if you want to do this, and you say YES or OK).
Tags and other metadata may be lost if you don't do it this way, if you try to import the photos into PSE11.

  • How to maintain tags when upgrading from PSE 5 to PSE 12?

I'm upgrading from Photoshop Elements version 5 to version 12, as my current version is not working properly. (Possibly corrupted?). It will not allow me to backup my catalog - the software freezes after a period of time during the "Reconnecting Files" stage. I'm reluctant to proceed in fear of losing the thousands of tags I have if the installation process does not go smoothly (since I don't have a backup of my catalog). Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately my situation may be worse than I
originally thought. ALL of my files are showing that they are "Missing" and
need to be "Reconnected," however the software freezes when I try to
reconnect. I still have the photo files under "My Photos" on my hard drive
but if the "Reconnect" is not made before launching Version 12, doesn't
that mean that I will lose all the cataloging/tags made in Photoshop? I
plan to install PSE12 on the same machine. I'm at a loss on how to proceed.
It would be so disappointing to lose hundreds of hours of organization over
a ten year time period on thousands of photos.

  • All photos disappeared when upgrading from iPhoto 4 to Photo 8.

Yesterday I bought a new MBP 2.5 GHz 15" to substitute my older laptop, an iBook G4 12". In that iBook I used the original iLife package bundled, including the iPhoto 4. All my pictures were stored in an external hard drive, into an iPhoto Library folder.
I used Migration Assistant to transfer all my data from that iBook to my new MBP, through Firewire. Everything went nice except for few programs that weren't universal which I'm still fixing.
When opening the new iPhoto in this MBP, it asked for the iPhoto Library Folder, and I indicated the old folder located at my external hard drive. After selecting it, appeared a dialog box saying that the new iPhoto Library folder wouldn't be readable in older iPhoto versions, and I selected ok. Than it created all my albums inside nicely but to my surprise (and despair) all my pictures were gone. To make things worse, I don't have backup of those hi-res, only the ones formated to my iPhone that I already recovered from it.
I don't know what to do, and I'm desperate since invaluable data from years worth are simply gone because of a stupid upgrade that Apple made. I can't understand how Apple didn't make and option to duplicate the iPhoto folder or ask if I wanted to backup it before upgrading if there was such a risk.
Since this happened I tried to recover the data using Data Rescue II, and I haven't cleaned the trash yet, but I can't find the files. If someone could please give me a suggestion I would really appreciate it.

Migration Assistant is known for not handling iPhoto libraries very well. I suggest you copy the old library again but this time manually and put it in the Pictures folder. Thendownload and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name in the owner section and Staff in the group section. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
After that's complete open iPhoto and let it convert the library again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Photos lost when upgrading to elements 13

After downloading elements 13 my photos from elements 11 did not transfer in. I even lost the photos in elements 11

I assume you're using Windows 7. If so, I can't help you with the NIK plug-ins, but with the Topaz plug-ins, do this: Computer/OS/Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop Elements 13/Plug-Ins/Topaz. To translate: go to the desktop, open Computer, then open your computer's built-in hard drive, usually labeled OS, open the folder Program Files, open the Adobe folder, open Photoshop Elements 13 folder, open Plug-Ins folder. It is in the Plug-Ins folder that you want to put your Topaz plug-ins. I simply copied mine from PSE 12's Plug-Ins folder and pasted them in PSE 13's Plug-Ins folder. As for the NIK plug ins, you may be able to do the same thing with them as with the Topaz plug-ins. However, you may not be able to. In my case, I also use on-One software's plug ins and it is a little harder to get them to work. In this case, I have to re-download them from on-One's site and let the installer do its thing, which, of course, means you have to re-enter your license numbers.

The iPhoto library should be in your user folder/Pictures unless it was moved.

  • HT1229 What happens to photos in an album in iPhoto on Mac when upgrading to Yosemite.

What happens to all the photos in iPhoto when upgrading to Yosemite.  My pictures are in an album to be made into a photobook with Shutterfly  or another service but it is not entirely ready to go. I would not want to loose this album, took me a long time to gather all these pictures (over 200) , edit them and write captions. I understand that Yosemite will eliminate iPhoto.  However, I want to know if they will delete iPhoto even if I do not upgrade as yet.

    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

All it does is update the OS.

  • IPhotos has lost my Photos when upgrading to Yosemite

When I upgraded to Yosemite like many people I have seen on forums there was a issue with upgrading the iPhoto library when upgrading to 9.6.  Finally it looked like it had worked but now all of my photos do not appear in iPhoto.  The files seem to be there still as the iPhoto library file is still1.26TB in size (i have a lot of photos).  I have tried doing a full rebuild of the Library but it did nothing.  I also purchased iPhoto Library Manager but this does not help either.  Please can anyone help?
I am using iPhoto 9.6, OSX 10.10 (Yosemite) on a iMac (27-inch, Late 2013).  The Library is stored on a "My Book Thunderbolt Duo", 8TB in raid 1 configuration.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Lost photos when upgraded to Iphoto 11 - Time machine is off.

I just upgraded my iphoto and have lost all my photos. When I upgraded it was pretty quick and asked me which iphoto I wanted to use. I clicked on the first one. It didn't open the first time but the second time it opened fine...NOW ALL MY PHOTOS ARE GONE! My time machine is off (apparently the computer comes like that and you have to turn it on) and I have no backup!
    PLEASE HELP!!!

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

  • Photo losing color/contrast when using "save as" to save it.

When I first started using CS6 I would edit my photos and when I used "save as" to save my photos then open them in a different photo viewer they would have lost a lot of color and contrast. When I reopened them in CS6 they still had no color. This is all occured on my PC. I used to use PSE 7 (on my PC) and the "save as" function to save them and they turned out fine. I recently got an iMac and when saved on there the same way and reopened in a different viewer they'd have the correct color, but when opened on my PC the color would be lost again. Also tried opening the images I saved on my PC in CS6 on the iMac and they still had no colo/contrast. So that would mean it's not a monitor calibration thing. I'm trying to figure out how to save my photos so they have the best quality they can have for printing and also the correct color for clients to view on their computers. Hope this all makes sense, it's a little confusing. Any help is much appreciated!! Thanks!
PS: I did use the "save for web" option on my PC and the photos have the correct color that way! But those aren't the proper size and stuff for printing. Also I'm very new to iMac and full photoshop so I'm not sure what sizes/pixels/color modes/etc are normal or what photos are supposed to be.

It has to do with embedded profiles  and what app you are using to open on PC

  • Problems with events in Photo app on upgrading to iOS8

Yes we understood that iPhoto & Aperture were to be discontinued on the desktop OS sometime in the future but it was a shock to find without warning when upgrading to iOS 8 that iPhoto would not work. Why didn't Apple tell us this!
The new version of iOS 8 Photos app. is better then the previous but just doesn't have the features when I have spent hours tagging, editing and sorting all my photos in iPhoto on my iPad and  desktop.
On migrating to iOS8 all my photos transferred fine but the Events are now in a random order in the Photos app on my iPad rather then in the date created order as is the norm and is reflected in iPhoto on the desktop. They appeared in the correct order in the Photo app before the update. I cannot seem to change that, so I am unable to easily find the photos I wish to view by scrolling through the Events. Has anyone any suggestions of how to sort this? Removing photos and re-syncing them did not help neither has a complete update, restore and re-sync!
Even trying to find a photo using the new improved search function does not help me find the photos. Even though I give each Event a name "Lisa's Wedding" etc. the search function in the Photos app in iOS 8 fails to find events or most keywords which I had hoped it would. From what I have seen so far the search finds titles of individual photos, albums and geo tags, however even the geo tags seem to be named differently to what show up in iPhoto on the desktop.
Presently I have had to downgrade to iOS 7.1.2 so that I can carry on working the way that I did as do need to work!
I have raised a complaint with apple regarding the dumping of the iPhoto now and a bug report regarding the ordering of Events on the Photos app. (I seemed to recall that happened with a very early version of the Photos app.) However if anyone has any suggestions of work arounds or if I am just missing something, then all and any advice would be very welcome.
    Thank you
    Simon

but just doesn't have the features when I have spent hours tagging, editing and sorting all my photos in iPhoto on my iPad and  desktop.
You cannot add tags and captions in Photos iOS 8, and you cannot see them when opening a photo. But the tags you added previously are still there when you migrate the iPhoto library to Photos. You will see that, when you use the search field and enter one of your tags or a caption. This will find all photos with this tagged you then can create an album of all tagged photos for each tag. Creating albums with distinctive names is the new way of tagging. You can search for album names.
I share your sentiments entirely, and I hope Apple will provide an update to Photos soon or offer app extensions to add the missing features.

  • Can't open my photo library after upgrading to iPhoto 11.  is it possible to load iPhoto 9.0.1 after loading 11?  have followed all other instructions but it still won't let me open iPhoto.

can't open my photo library after upgrading to iphoto 11.  Is it possible to download iphoto 9.0.1 after installing '11.  Have followed all the other instructions and am in a loop which doesn't allow me to access iphoto or my photos.

when iphoto wouldnt open we read the trouble shooting info and it said that we may have needed to download 9.0.1 if we had an older version.  We obviously didn't download it before the upgrade and wondered if it would cause problems or indeed solve the problem if we downloaded it now!
When we try to open iphoto is says:
To open your library with this version of iphoto it first needs to be prepared
To prepare the library use the iphoto library upgrader available from Apple.
We have downloaded this twice now and it still sends us this message when we try to open iphoto.
