Losing preferences in Mail

Everytime I close Mail, I lose my preference settings.. eg Rules, Signatures...
Does anybody have a fix for this?
I will also add I'm using OS10.8.2 (Couldn't find a forum for it)

While the Mac is generally more secure than Windows, the preview pane viewing is not recommended for other reasons than just security. It may take extra time to view a message with an inlined attachment. At least if you do use the preview pane, turn off loading images in message in the mail preferences to avoid that problem. Spam can also show off nasty pictures that way, and you can tell if a message has an attachment before opening it by adding the attachment column with the control-mouse click on the column heading. It will show a paperclip in that column if an attachment is present.

In system preferences icloud and mail, contacts, calendars crash, so I can't alter them.
Mail seems to freeze and only way to restart is force quit and then it is fine till I think it updates with iCloud again and then won't shut down again unless force quit.

    Hi lynne168,
If System Preferences or Mail are quitting unexpectedly, there are a few ways to isolate and resolve the issue.
First, I'd recommend booting your computer into safe mode:
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
If the applications are working normally in safe mode, this usually means OS X is fine, and the issue is caused by conflicting software in your user account.
Next, see if your computer behaves normally in a new user accoun:
OS X Mountain Lion: Create a new user account
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11468
If the issue persists in safe mode and a new user, I would recommend reinstalling OS X:
OS X Mountain Lion: Reinstall OS X

    Best Regards,
    Jeremy

  • Lion, Mail, and Outlook. I can't get preferences in Mail to accept Outlook as the default mail program. Outlook works fine within the Office world but not with Preview or Lightroom (to choose two that I've tried today). Any ideas?

As per the heading, I can't get Lion to accept Outlook 2011 as the default mail program. When I go through the Preferences in Mail to set the detault mail program, I can see Outlook, I can select it, but it doesn't "stick." As soon as I reopen Mail, Mail is the defailt mail program again. It also doesn't work though the Outloook Preferences menu. I'm a recent transfer to Macs, and could use some help. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

There is a forum specifically for MS Office for Macs, just click Office for Mac Product Forums and post there, they should know.
If for some reason you don't want to do that you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support, this might be a good time to use it. You can find the number in your owners manual.

  • I can not safe changes of preferences in Mail or Adressbook

    Hello,
I am using Lion on a MB pro. All Software is up to date. There are two users installed - both with admin rights.
The one I am using everything is fine. Today my wife changed on her account some preferences in Mail, but she
wasn't able to safe those changes. There appeared an error messages that maybe the right at library/prefrendes are
not ok. When we try to change preferences in other programs it is equal. Never before we had a problem like this!
So first I looked up the rights via finder. No visible problem. Nevertheless I repaired all the rights after restart from the recovery volume,
even the rights of the user folders. BUT PROBLEM STILL REMAINS.
Is there anybody who has an idea or must I create a new user?
    Thank you for your help.

Do you have Adblock Plus installed? If you do, disable on the page where you normally see your stock info. I've uploaded an image of what happens on another site where ABP is enabled. The Global News image disappears with ABP enabled even though it's not an ad.
If that doesn't work, try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If it works correctly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

  • Losing messages in Mail - Mountain Lion & Lion

I am continuously losing messages in Mail/OS X Lion and Mountain Lion, but only in my Apple ID mail-account.
I will receive a message, see it arrive in the mailbox for the account, and within a couple of seconds it seemingly disappears into the great cyber-void.
The message is nowhere to be found on my machine and also not in iCloud, when logging in there.
I have no rules set, except for the one from Apple, which comes with Mail.
I am, temporarily I hope, able to read the messages, because I in iCloud set Mail to copy all messages to a gmail-account of mine.
But for that, I'd be lost!
I am using Mail extensively for business, so this is a MAJOR problem.
    My set-up is:
Running a home-network with a Mac Pro and a Macbook Pro, both running mail.
I have two routers, an Apple Extreme connected to the service-provider router, and an Apple Extreme Dual running in bridge mode.
I also connect via wireless from both an iPhone and an iPad.
Any help would be very, very much appreciated.
Also, how do I get Apple to listen and reply?
    Thanks very much in advance!

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • HT4864 How do I construct the preferences in mail for the incoming mail server?

I need help in setting up the preferences for mail, especially for the servers.  I followed setting up an account and
when I encountered the incoming mail server box, it didn't allow keying anything into it.  It is blocked; and with the outgoing server, the choices aren't
    clear.
Then when I try using mail,  it won't let me send or receive mail saying I can't leave the incoming box empty or that it can't contactr the outgoing server`so I should see iCloud preferences.

Not unless you know which file in the app sets the choices. I've been through it pretty thoroughly and can't find the one.

  • Switching from POP to IMAP mail without losing downloaded POP mail (??)

I want to switch from POP mail to IMAP on two different business email accounts (both support IMAP) and a Gmail account, so I'll have all my desktop mail folders on my iPhone (not just the inbox stuff).
I'm concerned about losing my downloaded POP mail in the process.
Some time ago, I switched briefly to IMAP on one of my biz email accounts (as part of a web collaboration app), and lost lots of mail in the process.
If someone could summarize the steps to do this I'd be quite appreciative!
    Paul / Los Angeles, Calif.

    Hi,
Last month I have switched to IMAP from POP for several of my email accounts. I don't think it is possible to switch to IMAP from POP without deleting the account. I didn't find anything in the preferences. I usually don't erase emails in the server, so I didn't have any problem getting all my mails back.
In case you have erased emails on the server but not in your computer, it is a good idea to backup any of your mailboxes (Using "Archive Mailbox..." in "Mailbox" menu) that you feel important.

  • I want to set up an email alias but I keep being told I need to access "preferences" in mail. I don't seem to have that open when I go into mail it takes me straight to my inbox.  Thanks for any help.

Hi. I am new to using an iPad. I have set up an icloud email address for use by all the family.. I want to set up my own as my pop email does not seem to work well on this apple platform. I have tried to self help but I'm being asked to access the icloud mail preferences. I can't seem to do that. When I go into my mail app it takes me straight to my in box. I can't find a way of accessing preferences. Can someone help please?

An Alias would be an email address that is delivered to a different account's inbox.
For instance if you have  [email protected] and have [email protected] Then [email protected] would be an alias if mails from that address arrive at the icloud address.
If you want to add a completely different account, with a spearate inbox, like an account in hotmail and one in say yahoo mail. Then as has been pointed out, you need to go into the  Settings Icon, Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then on add account. The iPad has several services preconfigured, you can tap on one of those from the list to setup an email for that service. Such as Hotmail, Gmail etc...
Or you can tap on other to add a personal pop3 or imap type email like from your office, or your school.

  • I can't open my Spot Light preferences or Mail after wipe and restore from TM

I had to wipe my hard drive, re-install Lion (not ML [I couldn't post specifically for Lion]) and then I restore my documents from my Time Machine Backup. I had two users, a diag user and my normal user, only my diag user was "recovered" from time machine, when looking into the Accounts Preference Pane, only the diag user showed up, but my normal user documents were actually in my hard drive, so from the diag user I created my normal user and used the home folder that already existed. Anyways, everything works, my background picture stayed the same, my desktop icons stayed arranged the way they are and it's all handy dandy, but my Spot Light Preference Pane and my Mac Mail program won't open :S
I get the following lines in the console after clearing the console and trying to open the Spot Light Preference Pane:

  • I have two identical Mail accounts. How can I delete one without losing all the mail in both accounts?

I have two identical Mail accounts.  Don't know how that happened -- the second one just showed up one day. If I try to delete one account, I get a warning that all mail in the accounts will be permanently lost.  How can I delete one of the duplicate accounts without losing messages in both accounts?

  • Changing preferences in Mail triggers preferences error + certificates

I have recently (within the month) switched to a newer Mac Pro. I didn't use Migration Assistant, but do sync via MobileMe.
Anyway, this suddenly started happening today - As I modify my settings in Mail (Mail>Preferences) and switch panes the following error message pops up:
Writing your preferences to disk has failed. Your preferences may not have been saved. The permissions on ~/Library/Preferences may be wrong or your disk may be full.
I've been using Mail for weeks without any issues (other than the certificate one mentioned below) and I've run repair permissions (without any reported issues) & restarted but I still get the error. My disk has plenty of free space, although I should note that I have a Vista partition because this computer will be added as a render node for a 3D Studio Max machine on our network (my computer is primarily FCP editing/photo retouching).
Also, I'm persistently getting 'Expired Certificate' errors when fetching mail - what's up with that?
    Thanks in advance....

These permissions bugs in Lion are pretty prevalent and I've had to reset a lot of application defaults since migrating between machines. Do the following and let me know if it works:
Copy your Mail and Mail Downloads folders in ~/Library/ ( where "~" is referring to your User). Paste these folders your copied into something on your desktop as a back up.
Then navigate to ~/Library/Preferences and find the two .plist files named, "com.apple.mail.plist" and "com.apple.mail.plist.lockedfile" and delete them.
    Relaunch Mail.
Relaunching should cause a new .plist file to generate that reads as defualt and using the contents of your ~/Library/Mail folder your OS X Mail shoudl look like it did.
I have issues changing prefs in mail and seem to have a bigger bug at work since I continually have to trash my mail.plist once a week or else I can't connect to my SMTP server. But this always works and I get rid of the, "...writing preferences to your disk has failed..." message.

  • In MountainLion System Preferences, "iCloud", "Mail, Contacts, and Calenders", and "Software Update" all want to open in 32 bit mode.  Security and Privacy won't open either.

    As stated in the header,
    iCloud
    Mail, Contacts, and Calenders
    Software Update
all want to open in 32 bit mode.  Then when System Preferences quits and relaunches IN 32 bit mode, I get a dialog box saying "You can't open (pick one) preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based Mac."  Moreover, Security and Privacy does the same thing only without the song and dance about quitting and reopening.
Whaaaaat???!!!  I've never owned anything BUT an Intel Mac.
The "open in 32 bit mode" is not, and has never been checked in "Get Info"
I tried going to ~Library/Preferences and tossing all com.apple.system preferences files and rebooting.  No joy.
It actually looks like some joker has included a bunch of PPC preference panes in my copy of MountainLion, except some of them are new to this OS.
My hardware is a mid 2010 13" MacBook Pro with4 gb of RAM, and a 500 gb hard drive, in three seperate partitions, running three Mac operating systems, one at a time.  I have SnowLeopard in a small partition because I still have a few things that don't run in Lion/ML.  Lion is still my main use machine in the largest partition, and when ML came out, I redistributed most of the unused space into a 3rd partition into which I did a clean install of ML in it's own partition so I could work through the growing pains without compromising my main computer.  I'm glad I did it that way, but I DO want to get ML working properly, and I can't do that if I can't authorize third party software.  Gatekeeper is currently in the way, and I can't get it to move.

I dunno, that doesn't make any sense to me.
I just shut down and rebooted into the SnowLeopard partition and took a peek at the preference panes.  There are only 3 that run in 32 bit only.  They are all 3rd party, and none of the prefpanes are non Intel.  Like I said, I have never owned a PPC machine.  Anyhow, SnowLeopard doesn't even have an iCloud prefpane, or a combined mail, contacts, and calenders prefpane, and the ML security and privacy prefpane is all new as well.  The software update prefpane is Intel and 64 bit in both SnowLeopard and Lion.
As to the triple boot, unless I'm totally mistaken, what I have here is, in essence, 3 seperate descrete computers in one box.  All using the same hardware. but one at a time.  I wouldn't know how to get more than one running at the same time, without using a virtual machine, even if I wanted to.  (Which I don't)  I do sometimes transfer files from one to another using the shared folder, but other than that, they do not interact.  How could ML system preferences be trying to launch prefpanes from a totally different machine?

  • Reinstalling tiger without losing apps, documents, mail etc

    Hi,
I wish to reinstall my tiger operating system on my powerbook g12, I have all the installer discs etc, and wondered if there was a way I could do this so I could save all the settings Basically I bought this computer for my G/friend, subsequently she doesn't use it anymore having bought a mac book, so I want to change the main user id etc, and apparently the only way you can do this is by reinstalling the system...which i'm prepared to do, however i wanted to preserve all the mail, applications and documents...is their an option for doing this?
    thank you

Which data did you transfer for the Mail.app?
You need a copy of the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail and a copy of the Mail.app preference file at Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist.
The Mail.app preference file stores all account information and general Mail.app settings and is required along with the Mail folder when moving all Mail.app data from one login account to another or from one Mac to another and the Mail.app should be quit when doing so.
Sounds like you transferred the Mail folder only but doing so will not mess up the operating system.
If all you need to do is transfer Mail.app data and documents, this should be fairly easy and straightforward and nothing needs to be done with existing applications this way.
Re-installing OS X via an Archive & Install will do what you want but this will re-create your girlfriend's login account and you will be right back where you started.
Your only other option is backing up all data and performing an Erase & Install which will require re-installing all 3rd party applications and re-installing all available OS X, Security and Apple application updates, etc and then restoring all data from the backup.
My first suggestion is the easiest by far IMO.

  • Preferences in Mail Wont Close

    Hi all,
10.4.5, with the latest (3/13/06?) security update; mail w/some 3rd party add ons: SpamSeive, Mail ActOn and MailTags. All was well until the latest security update (at least I think thats when this started).
Now when I open mail preferences, I cannot close the preference pane. I have to quit mail to make it go away. I can bounce back and forth between mail's main window and the preference pane.
    Anyone else seeing this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Michael

That's great if you're using Mail Tags, but I'm not and I'm having the same problem.
As I mentioned, I tried a utility called MailUnreadStatusBar last week. As far as I can tell, it is just a simple app that adds a menu to the menu bar on the right side. It checks periodically to see if any new messages come in and puts a little red badge on its menu icon. I don't think it installs any plug-in into Mail. Here is the developer's page:
    http://www.queuesoft.jp/MailUnreadStatusBar-e.html
I have not installed any Mail plug-ins that I know of.
